From the article: "Adjusting the buttons, the shape, and the analog sticks by as little as a millimeter could yield drastic differences, Sumii says. It took a year to tune the design of the DualShock 4 to the point where he was satisfied."
To be honest I love the analog sticks. If the left stick was up there wouldn't that be a problem for the touch pad? I am a gamer and I play more than just shooters I like my dpad right were it is also being an avid fighting game fan. Using the Xbox or 360 controller for this without a fight stick was unbearable for me.
For me, the symmetrical placement of the Analog sticks is the best part of the controller. I used to have an original Xbox and the controller felt great, but when I tried the Playstation controller, it felt much more comfortable to play. Unfortunately though, the PS controllers have never been too comfortable as a whole. This is something to be completely fixed with the new PS4 controller.
So having symmetrical or asymmetrical sticks, just comes down to preference. I don't think a controller is better or worse just by the analog sticks, which some people might like more than others.
And, it looks great!
Looking forward to getting my hands on it. Definitely looks like a solid next gen controller
