Sony won the PR war, but it lost the E3 battle

Ninemsn games writes: I spent quite some time playing PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games at E3, and I feel that when it comes to demonstrating each console's capabilities and power, Microsoft wins E3 hands down.

Sony, on the other hand, won the PR battle. Gamers have been fooled.

I remember how so many titles were exclusive to Xbox eight years ago but it just died. The only major exclusive that MS had was the rinse-and-repeat formula of Halo, Gears, Forza.

I own both consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) and I know which console gets most exclusive titles. You'd only have to be a fool to say otherwise or doubt Sony in this department.

MS will probably repeat history. Buy timed exclusive games (TITANFALL anyone?), try to woo the gamers and then it's all Kinect later down the road which wouldn't be bad only if Kinect games were worth playing.

I have been saying all along, its about the games. Nothing else matters. I am glad to hear that people agree MS has the edge in terms of games. Reassuring that my faith is well placed... Not to say that I don't have plenty of faith in Sony.

Digital will offer its own benefits with regards to sharing/selling/buying. People are making a mountain out of a molehill... and the argument will fizzle over time. The future is digital, all arguments aside.

Let's say for the sake of argument that this article is right, that MS had a better "games" presentation than Sony (complete B.S. but I digress).

Why do you think that is? I have an answer for you. It's not that Sony didn't have the games, it's not that Sony didn't want to show games. It's just another symptom of MS' previous screw up forcing Sony to focus on aspects they should never have had to focus on in the first place.

Sony made their stance about used games and DRM PERFECTLY CLEAR in February, but NOOOOO, Microsoft comes out with their B.S. restrictions and suddenly morons who own gaming news websites jump on Sony as though they were grouped together with Microsoft and absolutely HAD to answer what Microsoft did. It didn't matter that Sony provided the answer well before Microsoft's policies were announced, B.S. excuses like "they weren't clear" and "we have sources" started coming up. Everyone demanded Sony answer questions they already answered, and they had to do it at E3 or else no one would have been satisfied (they still weren't.)

Even now after Sony announced their policies people STILL think that the PS4 will have the same policies as the X1 thanks to the phrase "up to publishers." Sorry folks, publishers can only dictate how their game works, they can't dictate how the console works. Without the same hardware/software hooks in the PS4 that the X1 has, that kind of DRM simply won't work and the worst you MIGHT see is a lockout of online content until an authentication is made, but single player content can't be locked out.

Anyway, the point is that Microsoft's idiocy and the refusal of the fanboys and moronic "journalists" to accept Sony's answer from February meant that Sony had to devote time at their E3 press conference to discussing something that shouldn't have ever been an issue to begin with. Sony showed more overall games than Microsoft at their presser, they announced a higher number of in-development games than Microsoft, and unlike most of MS' games, Sony's games are of course multiplat, or straight out exclusive and not timed-exclusive.

Whether you think Sony or Microsoft had the better games event, there can be no argument that refutes the fact that Microsoft forced Sony to talk about things they shouldn't have needed to talk about instead of more games.

The nonsense continued on through to the "confidence in Microsoft hardware" part. I pretty sure that's the first time ever that statement has been uttered without the words "no" or "lack of" preceding the statement.

And the anti-Microsoft sentiment is unfair and just based on "poor communication" on Microsoft's part? Again, the author clearly shows how out of touch he is with the gaming world. While there was a fair amount of confusion leading into E3, Microsoft confirmed everyone's fears just prior to E3. That's why gamers are upset.

@malokevi Just wondering if the digital era is a bit early for consoles atm. I mean I can't imagine downloading 25GB+ of data just for one game on xbone or ps4 and that is if your ISP allows such downloads.

It's all well saying how the digital age is going to be great and all but once you are exclusively downloading these AAA games at 25-50GB+ at a time you might just change your mind.
The ISPs aren't exactly moving forwards and letting their customers download unlimited GBs anytime soon.

About the story:

I don't see how multiplatform games constitute a "victory" only in that Microsoft made the public aware that they also have these games.

No offense to Microsoft fans, but the XboxOne lost on all possible fronts:

1. lack of exclusives
2. higher price
3. more restrictive platform (for both companies and consumers)
4. lack of technological gaming innovation (a great T.V. remote, though)
5. lack of proof/confidence of hardware functionality

There's more problems if you split hairs, but calling the "presentation" of games a victory is a moot point at best considering all they did was show great games that will be on both consoles.

The key thing to remember is, how much worse will Xbox One look like compared to what you saw from the PS4? Because that is what will happen. How big a gap will it be between E3 and what the console struggles to put out? That will be his first comparison.

Xbox is clearly behind, and the rumor says about 6 months in game development, and nothing that we've seen goes against that assessment, even if it may not quite be like that.

Looks like their cloud service isn't going to be as good or as available to other regions. Not a big surprise.

Killer Instinct on the floor had Xbox One kits right under the TV open to the public hooked up to TV's.

What he is saying by gamers have been fooled. He's referring to the controls and games he has played on display. Granted, some aspects of the PS4 don't concern me because I dont care about games being traded or loaned, but I do understand the seriousness when it comes to buying used games. I also feel that the $60 yearly fee for XBL is out of line. There's no reason for such a price hike. If you break down the the price of the system, they are virtually the same. Some gamers have been drinking the Kool Aid and are so invested in MS bashing that they don't really see the obvious. XBOX ONE is $100 more because it comes with Kinect. PS4 comes with NOTHING. If you add the PS4 eye, it would more than likely come close to the same price tag. I preordered my PS4 on Thursday because I enjoy Sony exclusives, but I don't really understand a lot of hate considering Sony was the first one to give the thumbs up on DRM. I find it especially strange, that very little credit is being given to Sony for continuing to support their "Last-gen" system, ala PS3. I didn't see any mention of exclusives for the X360 or Wii, (well I guess we can't expect much of the latter) while the PS3 is still pumping out heavy-hitting titles later this year, possibly even past the launch of the PS4.

Beyond and GT6 could have easily been moved to the PS4, in an effort to persuade consumers to "make the jump" to next gen. And let's not forget The Last of Us which just released, and is almost unanimously being heralded as PS3's greatest exclusive; some going so far as calling in game of the generation.

As a PS3 owner, I'm grateful that Sony still sees potential in extending the portfolio of games for a system, even while it's successor is to technically replace it, in only a few months. I just thought I'd make this little point, after so many people criticized Sony for having a lackluster showing of games for E3 this year, and even some articles I remember reading last week going so far as to say "Someone should tell Sony this generation is over..."

Really, I honestly wish Nintendo and Microsoft had as much faith in their older consoles as much as Sony does.

That's a great point. While MS had to bring the games for it's next gen console, Sony was charged with showing what it's next gen console could do AND also prove continued support for 3 consoles on the market. Sony attempted to appease ALL corners of the gaming market with it's E3 show. It showed further development in the exclusives that it revealed. It showed that PS Vita would have more games. It showed that PS3 is still a viable choice. It showed 8 indie games live on stage. Plus, to try to sway some of the Xbox fans, it showed some multiplats being played as well. MS might have showed some great exclusives (opinion), but Sony showed that it is truly listening to gamers of all types.

The launch line-up on PS4 completely decimates Xbone. And that's just the 1st party titles. Including all the exclusive F2P titles and indies, there's simply no competition. Best versions of 3rd party titles will be on PS4. There's far more games in development on PS4 than Xbone. Far more EXCLUSIVE games in development for PS4 than Xbone.

After playing The Last of Us I`m not sure MS can even beat the best PS3 games on their next console. And thats not because DRM and so on but because of the development studios MS has.

I do think that MS had a good show games wise, but they lack variety you got your shooters and you got Forza. In the meantime Sony still didn`t show what Naughty Dog or Santa Monica are doing.

Dead Rising 3 looked ok, Watch Dogs and inFamous looked a lot better in my opinion from every aspect. And being able to go and look for your tablet or smartphone while being surrounded by Zombies to call in a mortar attack isn`t a great feature.

This is a fantastic article. Paying attention to both conferences Sony basically had a reveal like Microsoft did on May 21st. They spent close to over an hour talking about games (they didn't show any new ones or first party titles), movies (They had the head of Sony movies on stage) and music. They showed mainly third party games which are multiplatform, along with mainly the games they showed off all the way back in February. We didn't see one game that showed off the so-called 50% more power that the Playstation 4 is supposed to have.

The fact that they are still supporting the Xbox 360 with games like "World Of Tanks", exclusives that will be on the system as well Xbox One. Microsoft showed more of commitment to games that I didn't expect. Especially when all we heard after the reveal on May 21st was that they needed to show games at E3. I say they delivered, regardless if we all don't agree with their policies.

I found it even more ironic that Microsoft opened the show with Metal Gear Solid 5, which looked absolutely gorgeous. Even a game like Infamous Second Son didn't capture gamer's attention like the exclusive TitanFall. Spark was unbelievable with it's potential for creator made content. We didn't see anything on or equal on that level from the PS4 titles. People are praising an HD remake of Kingdom Hearts. Really? It doesn't even matter if it's timed exclusive, because even if it is. The latest it will come to the PS4 will be late 2015 or early 2016. By that time there will certainly be more exclusives for both consoles.

So yes Sony has trounced Microsoft in terms of policy, used games plan, and PR. Yet, if we are talking strictly games, and who showed up to E3 with exclusive games, as well as third party games. Microsoft with Xbox One dominated across the board gaming wise. Which system people get is totally up to them.

TitanFall is CoD with Mechs and the main reason why it got so much attention is because it's made by guys who worked on the best selling console games ever. And how many games shown at the MS conference are developed by them compared to just throwing money at publishers and devs?

Sony has a lot of devs that didnt show their games yet like MM, Naughty Dog and Santa Monica.

MS mainly showed shooters ( after all they aim the console at the average american Joe) while Sony has a huge variety of games from shooters to racing, platforming, action and a huge amount of indie games and they still support the PS3 with 4 big games this year from their 1st party.

If you want to "try" and discount TitanFall that's up to you. We have never seen a game like it. It has essentially become one of the most talked about games around the world. Sony is also throwing money at developers and publishers. You can't get exclusive content from Activision on Destiny without forking up some money. You can't get an exclusive bundle for the PS3 with third party games for free. Sony is dipping into their money chest. How do you think they are getting exclusive content even from indies? Microsoft also didn't just show shooters. Forza is not a shooter, Spark is not a shooter, Quantum Break is not a shooter, Killer Instinct is not a shooter. They had variety, and again you add in some of the indie games they showed. I believe they showed off a variety of game genres.

1) PS4 games looked miles better of anything the Xbox One showed off. The Dark Sorcerer tech demo showed off the PS4's is capable of delivering a photo-realistic experience. The best looking game at the Xbox booth was Metal Gear Solid 5 which is being made for current gen consoles. You could argue Titanfall but that's debatable because of the next point.

2) All the games were confirmed to be running on HP PCs with Windows 7 and an Nvidia 7000 GPU. PS4 games were running on dev kits with half of the actual systems power.

3) Microsoft did nothing to assuage gamers concerns and actually increased it with the 499 price point.

4) Nothing was shown to convince gamers why Kinect was a necessary add on.

5) Forza 5 actually looks comparable to GT6 if you look at the cars in both trailers. I couldn't compare the environments but GT6 is on a machine that is 8 years old in terms of specs. The only clever addition is the drivatar feature which can easily be replicated.

6) Nobody has even played Drive Club yet, in fact the information on this game has been limited. But Sony is giving away a PS Plus version on launch day for free. That's a launch game for 5 bucks plus other indie games. Has Microsoft ever done something like that.

7) They gave two five year old games away for free. Whoppee do. I would have been more impressed if they gave away Halo 4 as that would have interested gamers more into buying Xbox live and gotten people excited for Halo 5. Even Halo Reach would have been better than this.

I happen to write for Game Insider magazine and after spending hours in private demo meetings playing Xbox One and PS4 titles, calling the PS4 lineup average at best is simply not honest reporting. Walking away from Killzone Shadow Fall, Second Son, DriveClub, WarFrame, Blacklight Tango Down, Destiny and Knack all running on the PS4 hardware and if you thought that was average at best, I really have to begin questioning ones integrity. In fact, after speaking with Sony reps and multiple devs, Sonys holiday lineup outside of the arriving multiplatformer will offer each game just mentioned aside from Destiny and Second Son. Meh - Xbox One is looking like the most interesting console.

To me PS4 is basically last gen with better graphics and zero innovation. The best thing about it is the fact that Remote play with the Vita is forced for all games - however the cost of entry here makes it a bit unlikely to be exploited.

Xbox One with its use of the cloud (from a game management perspective), Kinect 2.0 and media input makes it seem like an advancement over last gen, not just improved graphics like the PS4. I also like the prospect of it being developed on the Windows 8 kernel, so developers will be able to easily make apps controlled with Kinect and voice, that sounds more like the future to me. It also helps that the games MS showed at E3 were awesome - so there is still a strong focus on games.

I never buy used games (out of principle because I want my money to go to the developers/publishers) and I have never had my internet go out for more than 24 hours (and even if I did, I would simply tether with my smart phone for like 2 secs while it does its checks). To me, the positives FAR outway the negatives of the Xbox One. It will be my first console this gen (PS4 will come later).

It also seems what you lack in conversational and humour skills, you also lack in foresight and understanding about the Xbox One. How is it forfeiting my consumer rights? RE your comment about privately selling games, sure this is a restriction. You will only be able to sell a game once and that person needs to be on your friend list for 30 days. Or you need to do it at an approved retailer. The idea of pooling and sharing libraries doesn't work if you can constantly swap these games between libraries. Its a trade off - and a positive one I believe.

I think if people put down their pitch forks for about 5 seconds and actually took the time to understand the changes and how they align to the greater vision it makes it a really appealing proposition.

The cloud integration with Xbox One is what truly makes it Next gen. Be it simple things like shared games libraries, to offloaded computing or even infinite DEDICATED servers available to ALL developers for multiplayer games. It is a key differentiator, one that takes a little understanding to comprehend.

I am not holding my breath that the N4G community are ready for this level of understanding - hence the excitement for the PS3.5 (aka PS4).

I get the sentiment but microsoft and sony are very close in terms to launch line ups.
Killzone looks like a more meaty experience than anything at microsofts booth, but microsoft titles do have more of a wow factor (ryse, Dead rising). I can't see forza and driveclub being worlds apart other than forza's more glossy look and driveclubs more social focus. Also remember the ps+ version of drive club has content cut, so it being "given away" does not mean it won't be a deep experience. Knack looks disappointing but microsoft doesn't have an equivalent at launch to even compare it with (Killer instinct?)
-Add in all the games like PlanetSide 2 and Warframe and the PS4 has the edge in my opinion.

If you want the freedom to be able to play some great Kinect 2 game, Skype as standard and play some mystery project by Rare then you won't care so much about the small details. When you buy a car and install an extra for it you don't necessarily expect to be able to easily transfer it to someone else's car of the same model. So why expect to be able to transfer your game ad finitum, needlessly depriving games makers of revenue?

Reading some of these post saying that digital is the future always makes me laugh. I have always been a believer that there is always going to be space for physical media and digital media. Personally for me I always want the physical media because if I am spending my hard earned money on something then I actually want to be able to see what my money has gone on. If there ever becomes a time when company's decide that physical media stops then my time for spending my money on it stops also.
I collect games and movies and even though I have fibre optic broadband so streaming or downloading isn't a major problem I like to have the choice and not have it forced on me. I felt Microsoft had a better E3 when it came to games. However Sony had a more significant impact as it won the hearts of the audience with it's support of no DRM and 24-connectivity AND price (although that is only because of the mandatory Kinect).

This is exactly the problem with the Xbone, it is an elitist game system that is catering to a niche audience where as PS4 is all about being transparent and accessible. Any objective person comparing the two platforms can see how damaging the restrictions are that Microsoft is imposing, and for most, that transcends the few interesting exclusives. Below looks great. D4 is intriguing. Dead Rising 3 looks like a load of fun. Halo is always great.

It seems to me that Microsoft's 'damaging restrictions' are not damaging in the slightest depending on which side of the fence your on. MS seem to be putting dev's first with DRM instead of consumers, which can only work in Microsofts favour in terms of the development community. Sure it's a raw deal for us but MS has clearly stated that DRM is at the discretion of the developer (a fact that Sony fans have conveniently decided to ignore). Yes, it's somewhat of a raw deal for us if dev's do decided to enforce it but that isn't MS fault.

I don't have a problem with the 24h check in but I can sympathize for those who don't have the net. Im guessing MS has a good reason for this otherwise their just being d*cks!

Yes, both consoles have exclusives that have appeal but I can't justify spending a s**t load of cash on 2 consoles that share 99% of their library.

All I took from E3 was that MS were looking to raise awareness through their games and Sony were more about offline play and lack of DRM.

Passing the buck to the publisher is just that. Publishers can still implement their own DRM on PS4 if they want to. What's keeping EA from using full-title access codes?

Microsoft went out on their own and implemented a system-wide DRM scheme that they themselves control and enforce.

Your ability to play your Xbox One games later in life depends entirely on Microsoft. You're effectively renting from them for however long they decide that they need to support their console. To construe that as anything less than damaging to any form of ownership is apologist.

Microsoft's lineup at E3 was good but not stellar, the company presented a lot of Multiplatform games, for example Titan Fall ( coming also for PC and is time exclusive), MGS V, Battlefield 4, Watchdogs and a lot of EA's sports games. Also a few exclusives games were presented by Micro: Forza (looks great) and Rise ( very disapointing, excesive use of QTE events), for others games like Quatumbreak they only showed a video and Spark ( the best of the show for me) is in early stages. Maybe Microsoft wasn't ready for the E3 and the company improvised, because there are a lot of doubts and contradictions.

In other hand, Sony showed a more strong lineup: Killzone, Infamous, Drive club, Destiny (multiplatform) and full Indie support, also most important, Sony showed a clear and simple concept: PS4 haven't second hand restrictions, is region free, can be play offline and it will launch with an atractive price.

However i would like to know something...If MS scrapped their DRM policy (allowing games to be shared and sold as usual), dumped the online check-in (so the guys in the submarines can still play on it) and made the kinect a optional extra (reducing the consoles price to match the PS4), would you buy a Xbox One instead of a PS4?

It isn't the first time I heard someone say that they liked XB1 games better than PS4. But honestly what games were they playing?? The best games that XB1 showed was Ryse, and Titanfall. Forza was a great title when it first came out and people keep talking about Driveclub, but seem to forget about the greatest Driving Sim game there is and that Gran Turismo. They also showed off their next installment and not only did it LOOK better than Forza, but also according to people in attendance 5 played better than the new Forza. And of course 6 will be even better. Infamous Second Son, XB1 can talk all they want but Sony has more successful exclusives, and ones that keep my attention longer. And if I am going to be stuck with a game for the rest of my life I would need for it to keep my attention longer than a single runthrough.

I wonder what games some of these Xbox Fanboys are talking about? Microsoft only showed Quantum break (No gameplay, TV Show game?) (Spark=doesn't look too bad but Xbox fangirls are shooter enthusiasts, this won't sell) and Killer Instinct which comes from some dev who's never done a fighting game and has a weird free to play model.

I am really disappointed with the PS4 launch titles, only two that interests me are Shadowfall and Watchdogs. Hope Sony reveals at least a few more titles for launch. For X1 I am having a hard time ignoring it with so many great titles. Spark looks incredible as does TitanFall, DR3, QB, Forza, Ryse.. I know a few are PC as well, but that type of support is hard to ignore.
