Will SOCOM Return To PlayStation?

TRS Writes: "There is a large group of hardcore shooter fans out there who have shown over 10 years of loyalty to PlayStation. Sony birthed this niche, rabid fanbase back in 2002 when the network adapter was catapulted by the success of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs. The first three editions shattered simultaneous logins for the PlayStation network, and had more clan mates logging in daily than all of Xbox Live combined at one point."

I'm saying a PS4 remake (not just HD, remake) of Socom 2, would be great.

One4U3989d ago

i just dont see it happening , insomniac dropped resistance cause it didnt sell enough but it sold more than socom ! zipper interactive closed partially due to socom sales and their psvita game

BattleAxe3989d ago

^^^

The Socom games on PS3 didn't sell because:

#1, Socom: Confrontation took over a year to get the bugs ironed out, and many people didn't like the run button and how slow the player movement was.

#2, Socom 4 abandoned every single thing that the Socom games on the PS2 had going for them.

The Socom fanbase is quite large, and if a developer does take on the task of a Socom 2 re-make, they better damn well listen to the fans this time around, or it will flop again.

BitbyDeath3989d ago

Probably the best thing to test and see if people still want Socom.

wastedcells3989d ago

I gave up on that dream a long time ago. Would be nice to see an online only ps4 game that uses socom 2 as its inspiration.

Nykamari3989d ago

They did that in MAG, but it was in first person and people shot it down. I would them to do MAG2 on PS4.

wastedcells3989d ago

Mag and socom 2 have nothing in common

ltachiUchiha3989d ago

We never know but i dont it will. Hope im wrong.

Gimmemorebubblez3989d ago

The last SOCOM was very meh compared to the PS2 ones. If done properly I could see SOCOM being a massive franchise for the PS4.

Jek_Porkins3989d ago

Sony closed down Zipper, so if they did come out with a new Socom, it wouldn't have the same feel to it.

PirateThom3989d ago

Zipper made SOCOM 4 and it didn't have the same feel to it anyway.

Jek_Porkins3989d ago

I guess that justified them not getting another chance, and being closed down then.

PirateThom3989d ago

Their last three games were MAG, SOCOM 4 and Unit 13.

How many chances do they get? I liked all three games, to a degree, but they're not exactly up to the standards of SOCOM 2.

Hicken3989d ago

It doesn't necessarily need the same "feel" if it can actually improve on that old "feel." Hell, even if it WAS Zipper- as Thom alludes to- it might not have the same "feel."

And who knows? It might even be better.

But expecting you to look at the positive side of something Sony-related is a bit too much, huh?

SolidDuck3989d ago

I think Sony bend should be doing a new socom or 2 remake. They have 3rd person shooter experience with syphon filter. They took two franchises that were not there's in, resistance retribution and uncharted golden abyss, and made excellent games with them. Now that zipper is gone that's who I would like to see work on it. I just hope Sony doesnt let socom die forever.

ssj273989d ago

or GG
they did Nam 67'
they have good experience with online and tps..

they could use SOCOM classic formula with their amazing talent.

My dream come true lol GG making a SOCOM like confrontation game ha

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers17h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken3h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing12h ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H913h ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola9h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66912h ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle11h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg1d 5h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos1d 4h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola23h ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me

PlayStation Doesn't Need a Dedicated PC Store Launcher

With all the PlayStation games that are now coming to PC, is it time for Sony to release a dedicated PC launcher?

thorstein5d ago

No, and they already solved any need with the overlay that's coming.

Vits5d ago

Unless they are trying to kill their recently created PC business, I would advise against opening a dedicated PC store. It's an extremely hard endeavor, and people, in general, are very comfortable with Steam. Even Epic, with their billions of dollars invested, is still struggling to find a foothold, and they have Fortnite.

just_looken3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Money is one thing security is another but again millions have 0 knowledge past 2020.

Epic store for years struggled with a shopping cart/account theft/credit card theft

Rockstar launcher/store to this day over 5 years later still has horrific user interface security flaws lost account's and stolen CC

Then you got that activision need phone number oh we lost it launcher

The crown jewel is the ea launcher/store ea app 3 yrs old still has hundreds of threads were people lost games/accounts/game access or just straight up crashes.

Edit" Oh ubi launcher were you buy a game that may or may not be there again or work and the launcher 5yrs old still has no 4K support if you launch it on a 4k screen there is a high chance it will just crash.

ocelot074d ago

Can tell who ever put this together is not all that clued up on pc gaming.

It's just a known fact. The PC gaming community prefer Steam and Steam alone. They don't like different launchers. I personally don't mind them. But majority just stick with steam. Hence why EA and Ubisoft went back to on releasing on steam and why Microsoft release games on steam as people hated buying from the windows store.

The only other launchers that I imagine are doing ok is GOG due to being drm free and epic games due to the free games every week. Sony shouldn't release any sort of pc launcher n

Nitrowolf24d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It literally says in the OP that PC gamers don't like multiple launchers lol. It even mentions Steam being the go to for gamers

Tacoboto4d ago

Title: "PlayStation Doesn't Need a Dedicated PC Store Launcher"

N4G: "Can tell who ever put this together is not all that clued up on pc gaming"

When you don't even read the headline...

ocelot074d ago

I read it and had a brain fart. As read the title then this "With all the PlayStation games that are now coming to PC, is it time for Sony to release a dedicated PC launcher?"

So I hold my hands up on that mistake. Rest of my comment still stands.

Giblet_Head3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Steam and GOG are highly preferred because of the rich feature set. Ubisoft, Rockstar, EA, Epic etc have all set a precedent over the years for customers to instinctively expect individual publisher launchers to be so extremely half-assed that the majority simply don't want to bother dealing with what is almost an inevitable disappointment by comparison to Steam or GOG. Those publishers and their inaction or general disinterest to improve have effectively ruined any future adoption to be taken seriously.

Einhander19724d ago (Edited 4d ago )

This is just another ridiculous double standard article.

It's like how Microsoft can spend 20 years of making nothing but gaas and live service style games to sell microtransactions, dlc and subscriptions and get praise for doing it, but if Sony wants to make a single game like that every website under the sun is writing articles saying how Sony is anti-consumer or whatever.

derek4d ago

Yep, huge double standard look at the tortured reaction to the ps5pro, websites hyperventilating like Sony is forcing people to buy it.

just_looken3d ago

Wait my xbox from 2004 has avengers gaas on it? wow your so smart

m$ Gaas started with the other companies like sony

Gamepass yes they are deep into that but its still a huge money saver sense you do not own your games then get a service like that.

Now there pc xbox launcher that is trash for years now
