Microsoft Xbox 720 to have omni-spatial gesture and Glasses-Free 3D UI

The US software giant has developed a unique User Interface which will let users enjoy a 3D experience with wearing any glasses. The system is based on an advanced Omni-spatial Gesturing input mechanism.

This doesn't actually come with the 720 though... Right? I mean, if so that would be awesome. Though I'm pretty sure it said this was for all sorts of devices and wasn't specifically for the 720.

3-4-54460d ago

So basically Microsoft is including all the stuff we DON'T want into a next gen console.

* 3DS already has this tech and I love my 3DS but never use it. It's almost gimick.

* Nobody outside of maybe 200 small children actually want Kinect 2.0

We are going to have to pay for both...if....you purchase the new box.

I'd rather them think outside the box.

SephirothX214460d ago

199 small children. Get it right dammit!

SJPFTW4460d ago (Edited 4460d ago )

I dont even want Kinect but it does gives developers options. Skyrim, Mass Effect and especially FIFA and Madden integrates Kinect well into the experience granting greater immersion

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

but obviously Fanboys can't think outside of the box. and obviously a facebook-esque profile page on the PS4 that forces you to use your real name is obviously what gamers want in their next gen system *rolls eyes*

@BrunoM. Another gimmick that adds nothing to the core experience so excited

BrunoM4460d ago

SJP I see what your "trying" to say but very poor job at it and as far as you HAVING to use your real name on the new ps4 UI that's a lie even them selfs said If you wanna keep using you user name and avatar you can as easly do that ..

But hey fanboys and haters will hate

malokevi4460d ago (Edited 4460d ago )

Its odd, the people whom assuming makes an ass of...

I can't wait to get my hands on the new Kinect. Didn't go for it this gen. but with universal inclusion with every Xbox and improved hardware, I'm looking forward to great things.

Not to mention I'll never need a freekin XboxLive microphone again, because I can just yell at my Xbox... :D

If they can manage 3d without glasses on massive HD TVs, my jaw will drop and I will subsequently jump for joy. But, somehow that feels like a rumour to me... I'll believe it when i see it.

Anyone who doesn't see the potential in this thing is suffering from serious tunnel vision.

Edit: ohhh i see its just for the UI. STILL that would be so cool flipping through a 3d menu, sans glasses, with a flick of my hand.... bwahahahaha!

edit again: "a 3D experience with wearing any glasses.".... and this is why the article lacks credibility.

Qrphe4460d ago

"3DS already has this tech"

If this were to be true, the 3DS wouldn't have this tech at all. The 3DS works off a the limited parallax barrier effect, something that would never work on a living room TV.

3-4-54460d ago

whoa...You guys want 3D ?

You want Kinect ?

I'll stick to solid story, gameplay and a cool art style over 3D and kinect any day.

4me24460d ago

@SJPFTW

".... PS4 that forces you to use your real name is obviously what gamers want in their next gen system *rolls eyes*"

Facebook integration is optional, NOT forcing you to share your name with everybody, and is only visible to to your friends.

DOMination-4460d ago

And just like that, 80% of people on n4g claim 3D is terrible and pretend they always thought it was a gimick!

Ps. This is one rumour i really cannot believe

andibandit4460d ago

@xxLuckyStrike
ROFLMAO!!!!

sad but true

xbox gets:

3D --- I WANT 2D!!
Vibrant colors --- I WANT BLACK AND WHITE!!
Amazing graphics --- I WANT TEXT BASED GAMES!!!

Urusernamesucks4460d ago

What the hell, is the matter with you?

you use to be all about the xbox, but now, man your just disgracefull. So you think that by kissing sony's ass you youll fit in better here, its not worth it man. Even if all your saying is realy meant, there are BETTER things than games.I LOVE GAMES btw and anything else is like frosting to that.

Dont take this personaly btw, this goes to all those ex-fanboys such as Marcus_Phoenix.

ShinMaster4460d ago

to create a faux 3D effect? Sounds plausible.

@andibandit
You're ridiculous.

UnholyLight4460d ago

Always good to say no to something like Kinect 2 when you don't know what it's potential capabilities are.

Some people don't want 4k TV..well guess what, such is the way of the future, new things will be developed and become more commonplace.

Too bad for you!

sikbeta4460d ago

@3-4-5

Dude, talk for yourself, if you didn't try it, how you know don't want it? how you can be sure it's not some great feature that can change the way you interact with the console...

ziggurcat4460d ago

@ SJPFTW

"but obviously Fanboys can't think outside of the box. and obviously a facebook-esque profile page on the PS4 that forces you to use your real name is obviously what gamers want in their next gen system *rolls eyes* "

where are you getting your information from? because that's not even remotely true/accurate.

your attempt at trolling is a pretty big fail.

Jessika_S4460d ago

I call bullshit on glasses free 3D only because all 3D content is Glasses free if you have a Glasses free Monitor or Television. You cannot implement 3D in a Non 3D tv, so you can't turn a non glasses free tv into one.

CommonSense4460d ago

Sony is bringing Move to PS4, i don't see anyone complaining about that.

What is with the insane double standard on this site?

Tr10wn4460d ago

lol 200 small childrens, i have 0 interest on kinect but im not stupid enough to think only a handful of people like kinect, go to the mall and you see a bunch of people playing kinect go to a party and the one thing playing on the tv is a kinect, that thing sold more than 24 millions units now you do the math.

3D is a gimick it self you just lost it there but there is always way to improve a gimick and it is by eliminating those stupid glasses, and again you must be really stupid if you think MS will put a 3DS style of glassless technology on their console especially when its meant to be played on HD.

Sony fanboys are extremely ignorant this year i mean they never seen beyond N4G this is their place but wow you must be a retard to think that kinect is pointless, an add-on to a console that sold millions... come on.

nveenio4459d ago (Edited 4459d ago )

First of all, glasses-free 3D is display dependent. The Xbox 720 may be 3D capable, but without the display to support it, "no 3D for you". Perspective shifting using head tracking IS NOT 3D.

Mr_Writer854459d ago

@CommonSense

Sony is bringing Move to PS4, i don't see anyone complaining about that.

What is with the insane double standard on this site?

That would be a valid point, if the following points couldnt be made.

- Move is still a controller
- Its optional

Now the first point Kinect cant change. But people are reacting to the news Kinect WONT be optional, until its confirmed its is. Then you may have a point.

But until then its not really double standards is it?

Why would the console itself have specifically "Glasses-Free 3D" built in? Would it not have 3D in general and the TV itself would mean glasses-free or not?

This rumor reeks of made-up-ness.

BISHOP-BRASIL4460d ago

I don't think it's any kind of stereo-image that's usually marketed as 3D now a days, but a kind of head tracking, making it possible to move around to perceive third dimension... Something like Desktop VR displays, all you need is a camera (and Kinect already can track your head, it's just a metter of coding really).

It can have pretty good results but the best is when you combine both the head tracking and stereo-images. Stuff really seens to come out of the screen.

braydox214460d ago

i think a better thing to add-on would be those tv glasses, i don't know what they are called but i saw them at the EB games expo on the xbox, and i they were like normal glasses and you put them on and its like when you use binoculers (just without the maginification effect) playing halo reach, it was pretty cool, so maybe a gimmick like that would be better then this 3D stuff.

p.s if anyone knows anything about these glasses wether they are being sold or not, please tell me im thinking about buying myself a set hopefully they work on ps3.

SilentNegotiator4460d ago

@bishop

If that's the sort of thing that they meant then calling it "glasses free" makes zero sense and sounds like it's coming from someone that has no idea what they're talking about.

Either way, this rumor sounds made up.

Glasses free 3D still requires a spaecial glass if it was possible without the glass then we wouldn't need 3D tv's for 3D.

Droid Control4459d ago

Well I don't like Kinect and 3D. I think they are both gimmicks. I'm more interested in resolution and frame rate. I'd rather M$ use their money and invest in in kick-ass hardware solutions like Sony has with the PS4.

Sounds really cool albeit unlikely. Here's hoping its true!

jimbobwahey4460d ago (Edited 4460d ago )

Remember that guy who came up with that amazing 3D effect using the Wii remotes and sensor bar? Where it presented a 3D effect on the TV screen by moving all the objects on it in relation to the position of the Wii remote?

Microsoft could replicate the same thing with the Kinect sensor, where it adjusts and moves the UI on the screen based on the position of the viewer. So for example if you're sat in front of the TV and tilt/turn your head (maybe moves your eyes? apparently Kinect 2 can track eye movement) then Kinect could track this and move the UI as you do so, creating a pretty crazy 3D effect on the screen without the requirement for glasses.

The same thing could be done in games too, but obviously require a lot more processing horsepower compared to doing the same thing with a simple UI.

Edit: Here's a video example. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

CandyCaptain4460d ago

It most likely is true, since I believe Microsoft picked up the guy shortly after that demo made a huge splash on news sites. He ended up joining the Kinect development team.

thesummerofgeorge4460d ago

I've seen this before, and the effect is amazing, but isn't the problem with it that it only works for one person at a time?

4460d ago
Gazondaily4460d ago

Ah yeah I remember. Makes sense actually. Can't wait to see what MS pull off.

kneon4460d ago

If that's all it is then I'm thoroughly unimpressed. This has been done before and isn't all that useful.

I was working on 3d ui's about a decade ago and for the most part it's just eye candy that doesn't actually improve usability except for a few specific use cases.

maniacmayhem4460d ago

Wow, just watched that Youtube video and that was very cool. If MS could pull that off for their next system UI and more importantly implement that in games then I would be on board.

TheKayle14460d ago (Edited 4460d ago )

this guy that invented that project with the wii after the video on youtube get that success....worked in ms as a researcher in 2008 and then moved in end 2011 for google

http://www.microsoft.com/ap...

LNDCalling4460d ago

Looks kind of cool, though I do see the following problems:-

A) The effect can only be seen by the 'single' person being tracked.
-Not so bad if you tend to game alone admittedly.

B) It's not 3D unless you move, i.e. you wouldn't see depth if you were sitting still like you would for 3D content on a 3D TV!
-Generally when I'm navigating a UI or playing a game I do so without wobbling my head about all over the place! :/

Tr10wn4460d ago

@Kratos_Kills
"How would this work with more than one person sitting in front of the Xbox?"

It doesn't he said it in the video although he said its a more immersive experience for the one using it and you can clearly see it when he puts it in the camera and more importantly it doesn't require a 3D TV, we really dont know anything MS has done with this tech we will have to wait and see how its work if its true.

Looks like they added support for a smart phone or tablet device to control the new system. Basically a more advance form of their smart glass tech. Too bad I hate touch controls, though this should allow for Wii-U/ps4 remote play capability without being limited to a certain device.

They will have fired close to 20,000 people all up after this round of lay-offs coming, since the ABK deal announcement in January 2022. Shocking really

January 2023:
Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees, which was a significant workforce reduction.

January 2024:
Approximately 1,900 gaming employees were laid off following the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

May 2025:
Microsoft announced a further 6,000 layoffs as part of an organizational shift.

June 2025:
Additional layoffs, including 650 in the gaming business, focused on corporate and support functions

It's not that shocking considering these numbers aren't just Xbox numbers as you're deliberately trying to make it seem for some reason.

Interestingly, another no shocking fact is that whenever Microsoft releases its quarterly earnings reports, you're quick to point out that those numbers aren't exclusive to Xbox. Yeah... go figure.

Ganif4h ago

They also fired around 2500 people across Microsoft's gaming divisions and Zenimax shortly after buying it, and before they closed down 4 studios including Arkane and Tango.

I remember Satya boasting about how compassionate he was for splitting the list 50/50 across the two companies.

Sometimes I feel like they brought in Sarah to take the heat away from Phil.

Phil has always stuck his nose into everything Xbox related when it's something positive or at least neutral but as soon as they went the multiplatform root he's stood back and let Sarah do most of the talking in terms of PR. Now they are doing the same with layoffs.

The person who should be let go is Phil himself.

RhinoGamer881h ago

Phil and his inner circle of circle jerk bros like AG.

You have no idea what you´re talking about.

*IF* Microsoft decides to address the upcoming layoffs, Matt Booty will be the one in the spotlight since he is the president of XGS.

Phil will probably be on some bs drama later doing interviews telling people how "devastated" and "sorry" he is for those affected while wiping away his tears with money.

Sarah is the President of Xbox (hardware) so she will be better off taking care of hers business and let both Matt and Phil face the backlash.

Think that rumor that they'll still make a new console but at a profit at $1000 will be true though. The series consoles will remain their cheap alternative throughout next gen I would say. Keep in mind that game pass and pretty much going 3rd party is their main focus. They want to bring xbox everywhere.

GamerRN1d 8h ago

If they don't maintain some kind of console presence, I think they will lose gamepass subscribers and just become a 3rd party publisher who eventually sells everything off

Even if they could get it down to $800 for a box that can run with comparable performance to a PS6 (at, say $200 cheaper) the population of people willing to buy such a thing would be so limited.
It would be the worst of both worlds.

Looming Xbox layoffs threaten Microsoft's reputation

Even as the company sets out to overhaul the very definition of Xbox, cuts at its studios risk creating a negative image reminiscent of EA's worst era

I appreciate the article but this guy must be living in a delayed universe, The reputation was ruined 10+ years ago and hasn't recovered since. As such people have voted with their wallets and stopped buying Xbox products in large amounts.

YourMommySpoils3d ago

Their reputation was lost way before that. From the moment Microsoft said they entering the console business, we all knew it would be a downgrade.

Bathyj2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That's not true at all the OG Xbox had drive and they had hunger and they wanted to accomplish something. It was a great console.

they didn't quite reach their goals and they gave up prematurely because they couldn't win. It was halfway through the Xbox 360 when kinect released and that was when they lost their way and we're a rudderless ship ever since

Agent752d ago

In all fairness, Xbox had some great games with online play, Xbox 360 even better. Xbox consoles started to die with the Xbox One. Ditch consoles for the PC and PS.

YourMommySpoils2d ago

@Bathyj hard to compute ay. Xbox was never better than a PC and that's all they ever were. A demo box. Doesn't get more true than that.

Lightning774d ago

Rumors of Turn 10 being either shut down or hit with massive lay offs is on the horizon.

The issue is MS will do something right only to do something very, very wrong. And they do this what seems calculative at this point. Doesn't matter what they do the Investors and leadership want more and more money an endless bottomless pit of purr insatiable greed. A company that acts like it's broke or hurting is what really, really infuriates me. They've surpassed apple again well over 3 trillion who acts like they're a million dollar company is fk stupid. Pivots and changes for no reason and can't do things for more than a year with out a pivot or changing their metrics.

Christopher3d ago

That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest.

1Victor3d ago

@christopher: “ That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest”
The key word big can be ether good or bad 🤷🏿only time can tell

DarXyde3d ago

First Forza being generated entirely via AI?

If any company would do it, it'd be them.

Nacho_Z2d ago

Isn't the point that it's irrelevant how profitable MS is, the suits have decided it's time that the Xbox division started making them money. Hence the layoffs, the pivots.

hennessey862d ago

That wouldn't surprise me, as motorsport has been heading down hill since the great number 4. Where as playground have consistently put out better games. I think the two studios will be merged under playground games banner.
