The problem with the Steambox is it cannot run DirectX 11. Though I'd love if Valve worked on Open GL. If Open GL got more driver support and all pc games were avilable for linux, the Steambox would blow away the competition. Simply because, you cannot beat Linux. Nvidia is only even saying anything about this because they're being asked, and they're of course going to sound SLIGHTLY bitter because a rival won the contract. And they don't even really sound bitter, they just stated the truth that Sony and them couldn't come to a deal on component cost.

It's not surprising at all considering we the gamers made it loud and clear that a $600 console just isn't acceptable. Therefore we aren't going to get expensively integrated PS3 hardware, and Sony has to get good parts at the absolute cheapest price.

NVidia really had no chance with at least Sony this gen because of the 2 factors above on Sony's end then multiplied by the fact that AMD is in desperation mode to get money flowing in the door. And there aren't many better ways to get some money flowing into a hardware company than getting a contract with a console manufacturer. It's guaranteed money for about 10 years, and not only did AMD get the contract for Sony's next hardware but also MS's....which is HUGE imo for AMD. That's 20 years worth of huge cash flow for the investment into basically one single design proccess.

My only concern is if AMD is taking on too much at once considering their financial situation. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that AMD's desperation mode doesn't result in inferior production.

If not, they will continue this trend of making themselves out to be bigger and better than they really are. That kind of company structure cant really be good for business.

I dont know if it was greed or if they really thought their chips were worth what they were asking. Obviously MS got out of the deal which lead to the demise of the xbox. Sony is feeling the sting like MS which is probably what lead them to discussions with ATI/AMD.

I only have one dislike for Nvidia and that was they were responsible for the demise of 3dfx. But i guess it wasnt all bad as they did (sort of) resurrect the idea of SLI (i know its not exactly the same) that 3dfx had come up with in utilizing multiple video cards to combine the output of a video signal to the screen.

I still have my dual voodoo2 pc for playing old school dos/windows games that supported GLide. Ahh...good times.

Nvidia and AMD trade blows CONSTANTLY. It's a highly competitive market. There is no time for huge ego's in their business.

you are right. i have been out of the pc market for several years. But it is like any other market where competition breeds innovation.

I remember the days of intel and AMD. AMD was always in Intel shadow on the CPU side. Until AMD beat intel to the 1000MHz goal first. It was a humbling experience for intel.

It lead to not only a new drive in their competitive step but also changes to their company as a whole. Changes for the better in the end. AMD helped Intel become a better intel while not inflating their company "ego".

I use ego as it just sounds better and is more relatable. you can use a different word if you like but these companies do have ego's that can become so overwhelming that instead of projecting confidence, it projects arrogance.

I agree with your last part. Nvidia is about profits (as all companies are) and selling their product at a loss might not have been in their best interest. But now, instead of selling at a loss, they wont be selling at all (to the console market that is).

Maybe that is a good thing as they can refocus their efforts on the ever changing PC gpu landscape.

I think Nvidia should re-assess there perspective seeing as MS, Sony and Nintendo decided to pass them by. I mean certainly there has to be money to be made with one of those three.

As a consumer i'd prefer AMD to have the business so i'm happy with the result. AMD can use all the help it can get to stay competitive with Nvidia and Intel. It wouldn't benefit the consumer in any way for either of those two to hold monopolies on either of there markets.

Yeah the title is very misleading and fishing for hits. What the Nvidia person said was that it wasn't worth the price Sony was offering to do business, thus it wasn't worth the "opportunity cost" which is different than just "cost".

Opportunity cost is an economics term describing the things you give up for the choices you make. If Nvidia does business with Sony and Microsoft, the opportunity cost is not being able to do business with other companies since you only have so many resources. Other companies who aren't catering to whiny gamers who aren't willing to pay more than $500 for a new consoles will be able to offer more money to Nvidia for chips since their customers are willing to pay more, like PC owners.

nVidia had always been rip offs...they overcharge everyone. Microsoft cut production of original xbox 7months before launch of xbox360 because of issues with nVidia. I read article 2 years ago about why PS3 was still more expensive, it claimed nVidia was still pricing its GPU higher for a 5 year old chip at the time. Nvidia lost a lot of money not putting thete chips in next gen systems. A console remains static for 5-9 years. During its cycle, it would have been better to make money than not make money at all. Both Ps4/720 are likely to have AMD chips and both consoles are likely to sell 150-190 million combined. That is a huge profit for AMD in the long run. How can nVidia not claim its not worth the cost. They are just money hungry biatch. AMD profit for 2013 should increase, too bad nVidia has lost gaining any profit from next gen. AMD is the bigger winner here, devs will now be comfortable with AMD chipsets and maybe drivers for there PC GPU will be better supported than nVidia's.

Nvidia doesn't own an X86 license, so any solution they provide would require a separate GPU from a separate provider. Thanks to AMD, we have CPU-GPU (APU) with unified access to RAM.

Also, NVidia screwed Sony with RSX. As a PS fan, that was my opinion from the beginning of PS3 era, not because Sony now chose AMD :)

Thats no true I sold my intel i5 3750k to get and amd 8 core fx processor for less that i resold my i5 and my computer is noticably faster and my windows indexing has increased as well as far cry 3 having a higher frame rate

Having said that, Yes from my experience Intel and Nvidia are great for Gaming Rigs and Desktop PCs, however, in the case of console hardware, AMD has been more relevant than Nvidia has. AMD helped with the Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360 and now PlayStation 4 and more-than-likely Xbox 720.

I think going with AMD was a smart move for Sony for PS4. They partnered with AMD to build a custom-made 8-core APU die, that's not even available in the market yet, and crammed lots of unique technologies like the secondary background chip, using DDR5 memory, decrease loading times/resume play functionality, etc. and all while keeping costs down so they can manufacture and sell at reasonable/profitable price.

Well, AMD had the better offer anyway. NVidia doesn't have a CPU and no integrated circuit. ARM (even A15) wouldn't cut it. And AMD was working on their APUs anyway. I can imagine that was right on their road map and they used the Sony funds to build their next gen APUs. I'm quite certain of it. We'll see down the road, but I guess it might not have AMD pulling resources from their projects in the pipeline. Quite the opposite, they could use this to merge into their current chips roadmap. nvidia did chips for the original Xbox and the PS3, Sony invested all the profits and then some into IBM Toshiba and NVidia with the RSX. After an investment like that the PS3 put Sony in the red for years long after the release. After a hefty price tag and not a clear run away success like the PS2, even though the PS3 is a successful platform, There was no chance Sony would go with NVidia as the solution this time around.

Nvidia refused to lower the price of the GPU in original Xbox as production costs came down which is one of the main reasons Microsoft pulled the plug early on the Xbox. For the 360 Microsoft went with AMD since their proposal included cost scaling as production increased and costs decreased. Both make great GPU's, but AMD makes it easier to do business. Hopefully this pays off for AMD in the long run. I personally prefer AMD's cards for my PC over Nvidia's but I do know realistically there really isn't much of a differance and you can't go wrong with either companies offering. Just personal preferance.

The truth is Sony wanted to use a custom cell approach for both the cpu and gpu but couldn't get it to work . so they went to NVidia and knowing about the pricing problems with MS made it so they licensed the tech and gained any cost saving from future shrinkage themselves rather than being stuck like MS paying the same even when manufacturing costs dropped , and it wasn't that long ago that the head of NVidia praised the Sony partnership how things change , still the real reason SOny went with AMD is the APU HSA solution

I'm sure Sony talked to both companies and maybe Sony wasn't too happy about the work with Nvidia on the PS3, but we can be sure that Sony made the best deal and in the end they have choosen the company they were the most happy with, this time it's AMD. Now maybe Nvidia is a bit pissed because having a GPU in a console means safe money in the bank for a long time. I would have been surprised if they said the PS4 looked great (implying that it looked great with that AMD chip inside). BUT, they could have just shut the hell up about it.

Sony obviously didn't want to make gamers pay as much for the PS4 as they did for the PS3 and it seems didn't want to compromise with nVidia. A loss for nVidia is a win for Sony, AMD, and most likely us as the gamers who won't have to pay more because of this decision.

Saying it's "not worth the cost" though makes nVidia seem pretty childish and, in this case, it should be Sony saying "it's not worth the cost to work with nVidia" as Sony would be the one taking the larger hit if they did partner up and agree to nVidia's obviously larger price.

Console hardware is typically sold at a loss. The initial cost differances on any componant is less important than the long term costs. Nvidia and Microsoft had a legal battle over costs with the original Xbox production. AMD has proven to be more flexible with long term production costs which is probably a big factor in both Sony and Microsofts decision.

nvidia did chips for the original Xbox and the PS3, Sony invested all the profits and then some into IBM Toshiba and NVidia with the RSX. After an investment like that the PS3 put Sony in the red for years long after the release. After a hefty price tag and not a clear run away success like the PS2, even though the PS3 is a successful platform, There was no chance Sony would go with NVidia as the solution this time around.

Not for the hardware setup they wanted. especially Since NVidia doesn't do CPUs and they've already said they will not do console chips when they started focusing on Mobile Phone and Tablet markets. Considering the revenue they get from The Tegra Chipset It seems counter intuitive for them to make console chipset.

They clearly have the hardware, but NVidia has set themselves up to be premium chip makers but their premium comes way to high a price, and I think both MS and Sony opted against that with this gen of consoles especially after the flack ps3 got for starting out at $600.

This probably isn't a complete loss for NVIDIA considering they announced last week that PhysX and APEX are going to be used in PS4. But yea, not having NVIDIA's actual hardware in the systems could hurt them a little bit. I think they will be fine in the long run though, especially since their graphics cards are still a big "go to" for many PC builders (at least, that's what I have seen in experience... my opinion though).

The Xbox 360 and the Wii both used ATI/AMD Graphics Cards yet they still netted astonishing losses (1.18b in 2012) and they're having a hard time staying afloat now. Nvidia is breaking through in the smartphone/tablet market (which is pretty big) and they constantly post profits.

This is still good for AMD because they need business and quite honestly, a world with one GPU vendor would be horrible. Whatever keeps AMD alive is good.

Sony ain't just buying a few million, or even 10 or 20 million of these things....Once Sony does the deal with the chip maker they want to use, then this is a 10yr plus deal, that means 100million chips, more than likely at the very least.....if PS4 proves as popular a seller as PS2, (& I hope it does), then that there is over 150 million of these components that AMD has sold to Sony.

I can't imagine Sony wanting to pay top dollar for something that they will have to buy 100's of millions of times over, not to mention in 2yrs time, not to mention 6, 8 or 10, these things will be lucky to be worth 20c.

Those of you complaining about Nvidia don't know anything about Nvidia products or prices and if you do then you need to watch out what you are posting.

A GTX 670 FTW edition card with 2 GB of vram will run you around 399.99 maybe a bit cheaper. And, through it's life cycle the PS4 will never reach the graphic output of the Nvidia GTX 670. I don't know why Nvidia says these things which we already know.

1. In order to make the console cheaper Sony HAS to go with the AMD/ATI.

If they are telling us this for those of you wondering why there will not be a Nvidia chip in the PS4 then this is a waste as most of us already know this and the rest of you don't care.

If Sony PS4 had a Nvidia TItan and an Ivy Bridge 3770K running at 5 ghz with 8 Gb ram and 4 GB VRAM it would blow the Xbox 720 out of the water but it would also run you around 1000 like our custom modded PC's but for the same reason why we have bumpers that only last so many years and tires that wear out in 4-5 years they have to make this shit affordable and NVidia products are top dollar..
