Tomb Raider Review | The Controller Online

Scott from The Controller Online writes: "Series “reboots” are all the rage these days, in games and in film, and often they feel quite unnecessary. One such re-imagining I have been excited to see, however, is Tomb Raider. This is one series that was begging for more realistic characters, not to mention a more intense story, which is what excited me so much the first time I saw this new entry in the series. Whether you’re a long time fan, or you’ve been drawn in by Tomb Raider’s new look, one thing is for sure; you’ll love the new Lara."

This game definitely deserves the high praise so far in my play through. Very impressed by the single player so far. This reboot seems to be going in all the right directions for me. About the only thing I would like to see would be a bit more complex puzzle solving as so far its pretty rudimentary.

TR has surpassed uncharted in every way, from the amazing visuals to the exploration of the semi open world. Best game in 2013.

fermcr4078d ago (Edited 4078d ago )

I have to agree. Crystal Dynamics took some ideas from Uncharted series (just like Uncharted took from the original TR's), and made a great game. I've been playing TR for about 6-7 hours and, so far, think it's better then the Uncharted series.

Congrats Crystal Dynamics for the reboot.
BTW... Great graphics on the PC.

WarThunder4078d ago (Edited 4078d ago )

TR has surpassed uncharted? Not even close...

Sorry to burst your bubbles
I have the PC version and even on Ultra high, it dose not look as good as a 4 years old game like Uncharted 2....

TechnicianTed4078d ago

You are talking a load of crap. Please, stop lying to yourself, and stop lying to us.

Darth Gamer4078d ago

I personally think your crazy. the new TR has IMO surpassed the Uncharted series in terms of graphics. Don't get me wrong, Uncharted ( and I've played them all, even Golden Abyss) looks fantastic but has very over saturated colors. Tomb Raider IMO is a bit more realistic in the color palette and the detail is just as good if not better than the Uncharted games. Animation of the characters is fantastic and it's the little details that surround you that make this really a gem. (leaves blowing, wildlife roaming, the water is insane, etc) Simply fantastic.

WarThunder4078d ago (Edited 4078d ago )

Yea im the one who talking crap.... lol

@Darth Gamer, TR has a lot of blured and stretched textures and textures with seems, the lighting in TR is washed out and not bright as other games, Even Alan Wake looks better.

please go check ur eyes.

Yeah right. I've played & really enjoyed the Uncharted series, but you can't compare the graphics on PC of this game running maxed out with Uncharted games, you really cant be playing it maxed out to say that.

I've played every Uncharted and I agree with you.

and to the disagree's it's not like we're saying Uncharted games are not great lol

Blacklash934078d ago (Edited 4078d ago )

I really can't stand these comparisons. Can't we just enjoy both without the pointless franchise rivalries?

And the reason Uncharted looks better than TR (and most everything else) it because it's an exclusive built by the undisputed masters of the PS3 architecture, and TR is a multi-plat from a third-party studio. But honestly, they both look great.

LessThan2Tflops4078d ago

You can't stand these comparisons... yet you just did one yourself lol

Blacklash934078d ago

Lol you're right. I just mean I don't like how people get stuck on franchise rivalries. It's always gonna be "This is soooo much better than that!" and I find it kind of pointless. Too much bashing and fanboyism for me.

I don't think there's any debate that Uncharted has better visuals, though. Uncharted 3 is currently the most technically impressive console game of this generation and very few would deny that. I just wanted to fairly remind people that TR still looks very good.

leahcim4078d ago

metacritic:

TR: 86
UNCH 2: 96

10 Points of difference says hi to both of you

Drake cleanses his ass with Lara.

I am not saying by any means that the new Tomb Raider is a bad game, it just it cant compete with best game this generation.

fact

aquamala4078d ago

you can't use metacritic and then call Uncharted 2 "best game this generation" when there are 3 games that score higher (GTA 4, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2) and 5 games that have the same score as Uncharted 2.

heck Modern Warfare 2 gets 94 on that site

fermcr4077d ago

Reviewers tend to over-score exclusives games and underscore multiplatform games.

In my humble opinion, Tomb Raider is better then Uncharted 2. I've played every Uncharted, except the one on the Vita.

So glad that the reboot worked!!!! I really like this franchise...

Darth Gamer4078d ago

Absolutely an Amazing game. The visuals are top notch and as I said in a previous post, IMO they out do the stunning visuals in the Uncharted series which to me seem very over saturated. The attention to detail is beyond words. And the voice acting as well as the musical score are fantastic and spot on. Lara's new look is gorgeous. Gameplay wise, every control feels tight and not overy complicated. I also love the fact that it is not an open world game per say but feels like it just by the way that it is put together. There is still puzzles to solve, tombs to explore and a bit of gunplay but are pretty evenly distributed. Just a great game all around. This one is a big GOTY contender or should at least be in everyones top 5.

vikingland14077d ago

I have to agree with you I love this game.It is deffinately a high quality game. A lot of action and a lot of exploration. Heck most people beat it in around 10 hrs...they must not explore because I have over 15 hrs in it and my game save says I'm only 60% done. But I allways try to find everything so I am slow at completeing some games.

The Next Tomb Raider Is Allegedly Set In India, Features An "Unrestricted" Open World

The rumours on the new game sound awful

"A natural disaster strikes northern India revealing ancient emperor Ashoka's ruins and artifacts. Lara strategically races against a Society of Raiders and other rivals for these powerful relics. The Society of Raiders are inspired by Lara yet unaffiliated and might have some opposite agendas. This also relates to a new feature based on recruiting teams and allies to strategically aid you in missions and defeating rivals. There's emphasis on a new non-lethal combat option"

"Generic Ubigame" structure.
4 companions with their own habilities.
Open or semi-open world, not clear.
Lara would have a motorcycle, to make it easier for players to explore.
MMO elements.
5 villains, very stereotypical, including a rich man, a mob boss, and two brothers.
Familiar characters returning, Jonah Maiava and Kurtis Trent.
Lara will have a skill tree with spells.
The game is a mix of various trends and genres."

Like, do they even know what Tomb Raider is anymore. I hope it's all bullshit, not everything needs to be open world.

I really hope they do a remaster of The Last Revelation and Chronicles.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9570d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro70d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot70d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist70d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx70d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188170d ago (Edited 70d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9570d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist70d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp70d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg70d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion70d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
