We Don't Need a Video Game Oscars, Yet

Paul Tassi, Contributor writes - "An Oscar-winning movie. An Emmy-winning TV show. A ______-winning video game.

It’s something that’s obvious to anyone who views video games as the third pillar of popular culture alongside films and television programs, we simply don’t have an equivalent awards show. Despite the rise in popularity of the medium, with gaming gathering fans across all demographic categories, we haven’t seen a rise of singular show meant to honor the best and brightest of the industry."

Nor do we need one for cinema, either. Not enough movies get a fair shake at a nomination, let alone securing the award itself. The Oscars is little more than an elaborate dog & pony show; far too many of the movies that "win" awards are memorable anyway.

Other shows are a bit fairer. I'm told the BAFTAs tend to actually give most films a pretty fair shake.

Oscars, though, never nominate anything that wasn't already nominated at the Golden Globes--ironically, an award show that nobody cares about.

Many consider the DICE awards to be the Oscars of gaming. It is a very formal affair. It's a shame Chris Hardwick hosted this year. Ugh...

I never understood how the hell his face became the face of video games in main stream media (sort of)...

video games are better than cinema if you ask me. imagine a 10 hour movie you will get bored as hell while a 10 hour games is too short.
i was more touched by Heavy Rain than any other movie i have seen.

The main problem with this general idea is that cinema is heavily appreciated to the general public. Where as Video Games have gotten the attention of millions alone in America...but when it comes to the mainstream media...they don't cover much on Video Games except for when politics blames video games on violence.

-Shawshank Redemption
-Pulp Fiction (Some games come close, but not enough)
-Silence of the Lambs
-Every decent Pixar movie
-There Will Be Blood
-Gangs of New York

I listed the movies above to give a list of movies that give so much emotion to us in heart and mind. I've found more emotional power from these movies, than any video game I've ever played. Just a thought I wanted to put in

Apparently, you've never played Shadow of the Colossus or Heavy Rain.

Fights would break out at a video game Oscars.

Nice! It's a shame that it has to be on the dumbest common denominator on the Quest though. I use a Quest2, but would much prefer being able to max out the graphics on Steam. I'm not looking to upgrade to a Quest3 at the moment.
