DMC Old Dante DLC is a contradiction, not a middle ground

Tim from PSU.com writes, "The Devil May Cry series dried up for me when Nero showed up. The fourth game turned into DMC2-2, especially when I was abruptly thrown into Dante's complex combat system after spending most of the game with Nero. Thanks to Ninja Theory, the DMC franchise is now in good hands, but the latest move to alleviate tension with old, faithful fans by including downloadable content of Old Dante skins is leaving the new fans wondering, 'Why make the cool new Dante look like a poser version of the old one?'"

VileAndVicious4127d ago

Im not really understanding why some people feel as though NT changing Dantes hair white somehow contradicts how they've redesigned him.

Even in the first trailer shown back in 2010 the original version of Dante they were going to use had black hair with white streaks growing in. This was foreshadowing that his hair was going to eventually turn white.

Hell, even when NT first revealed Vergil in a later trailer it should have become even more apparent what was going to happen, considering they are both twins and Vergil was shown already having a head of white hair.

TimNunes4127d ago

As the article mentions, the call backs to the original inspiration in the established reboot itself are essentially good references. If you had finished the game, you would already know that, since the article doesn't complain about it, the white hair isn't the issue, but rather the DLC is.

zerocrossing4126d ago

I was OK with the hair changing to white, in fact I saw that coming shortly after the original trailer released.

What annoyed me a little with this DLC, is that it should have been a free unlock after completing the game or an alt costume from the start, that mite have curved some hate on the new Dante design side of the argument.

Either way some people will just hate DmC because it marks the end or "death" of the original cannon, now I know the original games still exists but it would have been nice seeing the story concluded, but Capcom's half arsed attempt at DMC4 contributed to the lack of interest in the franchise ultimately leading to the reboot.

In short if Capcom tried to make DMC4 a better game instead being lazy we'd have got DMC5 and this whole debacle could have been avoided.

fabiani4126d ago

I want it cuz his trench coat is to short n not red.but anyways this is the second best dmc nxt to dmc3.i hope the rebellion gets an upgrade cuz they try to hard to make it look different.

TemplarDante4126d ago (Edited 4126d ago )

The ass kissing Ive been reading on Playstation Universe for DmC is so shameless..
Now, this article calls the old Dante a "poser", he is "uncool" because he doesnt pick up two women from clubs and indulge in threesomes in a trailer?
Just... pathetic. How sad. Just how F'd up is this world?
Im sick of the fakeness in the world..
Irrespective of how much whoring out this game gets, its still lagging behind DMC4 sales.
Sad, And to top it all off, this new Dante may get aids from engaging in casual sex with unknown females from clubs in his trailer. Whats worse? Maybe he gave them aids.. He does look kinda sickly... He's too cool to eat his veggies now, I guess looking like a junkie and like you have scurvy is cool these days.

The article says, "Why make the cool new Dante look like a poser of the old one?" This clearly indicates that the attempted look for the new Dante makes him look like a poser of the old Dante, and in no way does it imply that the old Dante is a poser.

MasterCornholio4126d ago

Capcom loves taking advantage of fans of the original Dante. What they should have done is enable the costume for free after you beat the game with alcoholic Dante.

DangerousDAN4126d ago

Hey, don't criticise the new Dante for drinking. Did you forget all those bottles Dante had on his desk in DMC1's intro. What, was that applejuice and ketchup? Dante has been a drunk since the beginning, he just never got around to show it to you. Good for him, everyone needs some downtime.

csreynolds4126d ago

Let me get this straight:

- People complain about 'new Dante'
- Ninja Theory releases 'old Dante' DLC - probably to appease haters by way of a compromise (at least, that's my non-cynical, non-hatred-fuelled interpretation)
- Haters complain about old Dante DLC

I'm glad I don't work for NT/Capcom. Trying to please this spoilt collective of entitled cry babies would drive me insane.

Xklaw4126d ago

Why are they releasing this DLC, aren´t they confident in their product? It´s to late, they shouldn´t have alienated the fans from the begining, and now problably they are suffering in the sales department. And haven´t you payed any attention, it isn´t about the FUCKING HAIR. This Dlc will change nothing. And don´t forget about Vergil Dlc that sould be on the disk and not another quick cash scheme. I´ll eventually pick this game up, but no way i´m paying full price for this.

Hanso4126d ago (Edited 4126d ago )

same
used is the only option crapcom will never have my monies

csreynolds4126d ago (Edited 4126d ago )

It's not about a lack of confidence! *bangs head against wall*

I have been paying attention. I just can't help but see how ridiculous this all is. In my time as a gamer I've witnessed many franchises I love evolve in ways I personally didn't like: Resident Evil, Tekken, Call of Duty, Need for Speed - I could go on. But do you know what I did? I GOT OVER IT.

If you hate DmC that much, go play DMC 4. It's still current, and still holds its own as a stellar hack-and-slash IP. Moaning about DmC on N4G over and over and over again makes you sound like obnoxious teenagers who believe the world owes them everything. Newsflash: sometimes games will disappoint you. It's an inevitability inherent to the industry that hasn't changed in 20+ years, and the very fact that a petition has materialised asking US President Barack Obama to pull the game from shelves illustrates how irrational people's reaction to NT's reboot is.

Please, for the sake of humanity, let it go. Disagree with me to your heart's content, but in the grand scheme of things it's just a videogame; in a world where war is prevalent and the economy's on the verge of collapse, you should be thankful that this 'controversy' is the biggest issue on your mind right now.

Sevir4126d ago

To Mannequins! It falls on deaf ears. I'm glad there are people who are objective enough to see beyond the senseless crap thrown towards these devs who has delivered. :-) game on bro.

Ninja Theory trends on X as gamers fear for studio following Tango Gameworks closure

Following the closure of 4 studios, many are now worried for the future of Ninja Theory once Hellblade 2 is released.

Sonic18812d ago (Edited 2d ago )

How is it going to sell well when it's also releasing on gamepass 🤔

Sephiroushin2d ago

Meant better to sell the studio and not closing it 🤦🏻 not to sell more games….
and games are sold anyways, you can buy it on xbox (not recommended if you got gamepass) but many pc gamers prefer to buy on steam than deal with the xbox app or pc gamepass!

On a side note to OP, the sales of studios wont happen though, especially when they want to retain the IPs, and well nobody is gonna buy a studios without its IPs; the other publishers that want a certain dev from the studio that are closing on their team can try to grab them as soon as they see they notice of the studio.

RaidenBlack2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Sephiroushin
Well hypothetically speaking, Ninja Theory can be sold to Sony at a lower rate sans the Hellblade IP.
Sony can then welcome them to work on the Heavenly Sword IP, which they still own.
Will be a nice proposition for Sony who can continue to offer a God of War-like hack n slash in their portfolio via Heavenly Sword 2, whilst Cory Barlog & co. decides to take a break from the God of War IP & venture some other genres.
On top of that, Ninja Theory was also interested in a sequel to Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and such Sony can come to a deal with Namco Bandai regarding the Enslaved IP.

badz1491d 14h ago

selling the studio wouldn't be an attractive offer unless they come with their IPs. MS wants to keep these IPs, so even if MS is selling just the studio, no one would wants them

Lightning773d ago

Because they're next come next year. HB2 won't hit some impossible metric within MS so they're getting axed in 2025. Leave gaming now MS.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Ninja theory might as well be gone in 2025 at this rate

notachance2d ago

Every xbox studio is in danger now because there’s just no way they’re gonna rake in big money from game sales because of gamepass, even CoD was rumored to not come to gamepass because it would canibalize their sales number.

neutralgamer19922d ago

If they are smart they don’t put COD on GP day one. It’s one of the best selling games on yearly basis

Hofstaderman2d ago

Satya will make sure that doesnt happen. As you rightly put it; why kill the cash cow?

But then again, it is MS after all.....

thesoftware7302d ago

I agree and disagree. They should not put it on GP, but CoD makes real money from the overpriced MTX that people buy for over a year. They also have it all linked up to the Mobile CoD, which will incentivize Twitch spending from consumers.

neutralgamer19921d 21h ago

Software

That’s true but keep in mind COD is the best selling or top 3 selling game every year. So yes micro transactions money is there but so are billions more

They should have tiers of GP subscriptions and the higher end tier received AAA games while everyone else gets them in 60 days

MontyeKristo1d 14h ago

Wouldn't putting it on Gamepass be smarter? Cod is typically played, I believe, for far longer than 6 months.. if you get everyone playing the game for a year, on Gamepass, you've essentially doubled your profit. $10 a month for a year $120 compared to selling the game once for $60.

Not to mention MT's, on top of it. Sell on PS5, PC and Switch, keep it on Gamepass for Xbox and PC. Much smarter in my opinion..

-Foxtrot2d ago

Also if you punish a studio for releasing a great critically acclaimed game which won some awards then what chance does anyone have

Elda2d ago

After this mess, I highly doubt the next installment of COD will be on Gamepass day one. It'll probably land on Gamepass 6 months after release date.

Noskypeno1d 21h ago

Like I said earlier, I wouldn't even mind. There's a good selection of games on GP already, and it gives me time to play my backlog of games while allowing the games that need to sell millions of copies to make a profit a chance to succeed, a win win scenario.

badz1491d 14h ago

not putting CoD on GP is sort of a violation of their own marketing though. they said ALL MS 1st party games will be on GP day 1, not some. CoD is 1st party, so to not put it on GP day 1 would be considered as false marketing.

Rynxie2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Ninja theory games were never big sellers. I could be wrong, but I doubt hellblade 2 will sell millions. I would rather they go independent and make heavenly sword 2.

solideagle2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

heavenly sword is Sony owned IP. this will never happen as original didn't sell enough...

Wikipedia: "In 2008, it was reported that a sequel to Heavenly Sword was in-development at SCE Studio Cambridge, but was canceled due to Sony no longer seeing it as a commercially viable product"

Flewid6382d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I remember. I feel like the amount of time & technology that has passed would make a sequel a big seller now. The game has enough legacy recognition to build hype.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

VersusDMC21d ago

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC21d ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Exvalos21d ago

What a weird name, it's essentially devil may cry, devil may cry lol

Cacabunga21d ago

Best to good for me: 3, reboot, 1, 5

2 and 4 are trash, didnt like any of them.
5 has very good gameplay variety but i hated the foes.. it is just insects the whole time. Reboot has the best foes for me

Friendlygamer21d ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey60221d ago (Edited 21d ago )

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya21d ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde21d ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

SeTTriP21d ago

This right here is my order as I thought DMC 5 was amazing and obviously 3 comes after 4 was great and 1 for the nastilgic value it holds 2 was so terrible that my local GameStop gave full refunds to people who returned it.

Cacabunga33d ago

It is a good studio.. i really enjoyed their dmc game that i platinumed it.
I did not try hellblade, because it doesnt tell me much.. Enslaved was very mehhh
Heavenly Sword was good not great. Amazing graphics back in the day but so repetitive and not so engaging in the long run.

stoney10133d ago

I really enjoyed Enslaved and Heavenly Sword back in the day. Wish they'd return to that sort of game. Hellblade isn't really for me to be honest. Not saying it's not a good game, I just couldn't get into it.

Popsicle33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

That is fair. I enjoyed Hellblade but can definitely see how it isn’t for everyone.

Would like to see how Heavenly Sword would have turned out if developed today. It’s easy to forget that games like Heavenly Sword were unprecedented and in their infancy.

shinoff218332d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Enslaved has been their favorite game for me. Loved the atmosphere.

1nsomniac32d ago

Heavenly sword was a staggeringly good game!! One of the most memorable of the PS3 generation in my opinion.

Babadook732d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Heavenly sword was good. It had ambitious graphics and as a result the frame rate suffered and as a result the gameplay suffered. But the story was phenomenal. Great acting, especially Andy Serkis as the king.

Jingsing33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

"Microsoft" we all read between the lines. We have seen the exact same thing happen with many of their other acquisitions

InUrFoxHole32d ago

Jesus man! Try reading the article at least.

cthulhucultist33d ago

One thing that pleasantly surprised me, was the Switch port, as back then it was my only console. The graphics were amazing and the artistic design helped a lot to enhance the visuals.I took some really impressive screen shots while playing which I still revisit them from time to time to remind me what a capable developer (QLOC) can achieve with weaker hardware.
