I want the PS4 to cost $700+

Having the PlayStation 4 cost around $700, it would make it last a lot longer in the field and games would pretty much always be ahead of the competition (excluding PC most of the time). If someone can spend more than that on an iPad, a console should be able to charge that much, right?

And if so i want a subscription service as an option. Strangly the average consumer doesn't mind shelling out 500 for an ipad in this climate. I do know they would for a games console. I wouldnt mind paying extra over a long period for a console as I know $700 is a price i cannot even bring enough money together at once. A subscription service definatly would help convincing people as it is a lesser blow at one given time

tdogchristy904320d ago

I keep hearing that if people are willing to pay $700 for an iPad, they should be able to on a console. This really isn't justified. They are two different mediums and even though their are a lot more gamers as of late, I doubt they equal the number the apple/tablet users as a whole.

TheMrMalro4320d ago

People can spend £400 on a blu-ray player with some speakers and not a PS4? It doesn't make sense to me.

tdogchristy904320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

@mrMario

My statement that their different media still stands and can't be compared. Rather we like it or not games are still geared towards kids thus the higher price doesn't compute. At least with blu-ray you have a larger install base, say adults movie lovers from age 30-70, 40 years. This is vs a kid ratio of say 18-30 which is only 20 year demographic.

Again it's not the cost I'm against, I just think trying to Justify it via comparing them like we do isn't justified given the different media and demographics targeted.

animegamingnerd4320d ago

those are appledrones they are a far different species

UltraVegito4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

700$?

People must want sony to crash from the highest mountains and into the pits of hell lol.
I'm sure there are some of you willing to dish out that much but let's be real,599-699$ wouldn't cater to the market nowadays.
399-499$max seems like a reasonable move.
Tbh when it comes down to it games are what everyone wants, high end tech is just icing on the cake.Sony just needs to make a decently spec'd system with a good amount of support and consider me on the ps4 train :)

BitbyDeath4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

@tdogchristy90, i think the point is that the PS3 does Blu-ray and more yet people are willing to spend 400 on just the blu-ray part but not the console.

ProjectVulcan4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

....and I want a haircut to cost $200

But I'd be stupid to actually pay that much for it.

kneon4320d ago

I have no problem paying that much for a ps4 if it's got the games I want, but I wouldn't pay anything for an ipad since there are better and cheaper tablets. But if you want those Sony exclusives you have no other option.

But there is another problem with making an expensive consoles besides the obvious one. The problem is that the rate of change in tech is accelerating so any hardware will be obsolete much faster than in the past. So it may be better to make a cheaper console and just assume a shorter lifespan.

rainslacker4320d ago

I think your somewhat on point. Games nowadays I wouldn't say is geared towards kids, except for those that make them for their target audience. It's more that gaming from a society point of view is considered a kiddy past time.

The differences in the markets are more down to what is needed, and what is considered frivolous. In today's society many people can't imagine being without a cell phone. A tablet is an extension of that. It fills a place in people's lifestyle. It of course isn't needed per se, however it does add significant value to those peoples lives to have those kinds of things convenient to them. It's the same reason frozen microwave dinners, even though less healthy than a home cooked meal, took off in the 80's and 90's, because all of a sudden people's lives just became busier, along with a lot of other social status changes for the modern home.

Consoles, or gaming in general, is still a luxury past time. At the end of the day it doesn't have that same necessity to most people's lives to warrant spending the same as they would on say a tablet.

CraigandDayDay4320d ago

They will launch at around $350 and $450 for the two models. That's my guess.

knowyourstuff4320d ago

If you can't afford it just wait a year or two when it goes down in price, more games will be out so the old tired complaining argument of "no games at launch" won't come up for you. Consoles have always done more than tablets and phones, with bigger and better AAA games, multiple functionalities, it's a different business model altogether.
Companies charge 700 bucks for tablets and phones for no other reason than people are willing to pay it - being made for 60 cents an hour in Foxcon in China, is anyone really naive enough to think it cost anymore than 20 bucks to make an iphone? The cost comes in the massive marketing campaigns, which get people nuts about the phones/tablets, which is why they're willing to pay 700 bucks for one.

The average gamer is in their 30's evidently, so the stupid argument about price is nonsense. It doesn't matter what the price is at launch, every console ever is extremely hard to find in the first 8 months to a year due to selling out practically everywhere, lowering the price does nothing for you if you're selling out left right and center.

JackBNimble4320d ago

I would rather upgrade my pc (at a lower cost) then pay $700 for a ps4. And if I were to pay $700 in upgrades for my pc , it would make the ps4 look like a hand held device compared to my pc.

As it is now ,I am a ps3/pc gamer, but there is no way I would pay that kind of money.

Oh_Yeah4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

No one I know would pay 700 for an ipad.. That's ridiculous, you could buy your own pc gaming rig with that money. But I guess some people buy shit for names, they hear apple and they bend over. The specs in a ipad are worth maybe half that price. Someone did a survey I remember it was what if apple put the word N*gger engraved on the back of the iphone how many would still buy it? The results were like 85%. If ps4 is going to be 700 it better well damn have 700$ parts is all I'm saying.

DeadlyFire4320d ago

I disagree 1000%.

Tech is tech.

iPad is a tablet. Is it necessary for daily life no. Then again neither is a console.

There are actually quite a few people that prefer to not have an Apple product.

Personally $400-$500 is what I expect the next consoles to aim for either way, but I could easily see tech pushing $625 or more for production costs for next generation. $700 is not unreasonable.

People are wiser these days to smarter technology which is a part of the reason why anyone does pay more than $800 for a Cell phone. Its got a bit of every new tech convenience in it. Same for a console.

Eremgee4320d ago

Why are people even comparing an iPad to a ps4? I'm not going to buy an iPad to play tiny iOS games and I'm not going to buy a ps4 to use the Internet.

UnholyLight4320d ago

Yeah this whole iPad thing is dumb. I could never spend that kind of money for myself, especially in this time period where saving money is key so that I can be able to afford both Nextbox and PS4/orbis etc lol

SolidStoner4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

I cant afford to buy ps4 for 700+, but deep inside I want it to be best possible console at that time ever! (and high performance technology cost pretty much)... I just know I will get it anyway (if its good)... and almost every new piece of technology is getting cheaper every year... that way every person who wants it will get it sooner or later... but not everyone can wait that time... so there has to be the middle best way.....

EDIT: forget about that IPad... everyone knows it sucks! :)

J_Cob4320d ago

@kneon

The rate of change for tech is fast but it's never fully utilized. With a set system like consoles devs are able to optimize so games look great on dated hardware. Just look at God of War: Accession, Beyond: Two Souls, Halo 4 and The Last of Us.

ABizzel14320d ago

I think the correct statement is "I want a $700 PS4 in tech, at a $400 price."

The only way that's happening is a subscription model in which case you buy the PS4 for $299, and pay $10 a month for PS+ (2 years equal $240).

That equals $540, and by that point most people will likely want to keep PS+ after having all the benefits for 2 years, so add in $50 for another 3 years, and boom you've got your $700 PS4 price covered.

But it's not going to happen.

NateCole4320d ago

I upgrade my galaxy every year at 700 plus unlocked. As such even if the PS4 cost 700 it is a steal for me considering that it will last 10 years and it is the center of my home entertainment.

I know this is just me but i want the greatest and best tech in my console. I want it to be AC wifi and those high capacity blu ray with a very powerful cpu/gpu and 16gig ram etc etc.

I want it to be dev freindly with so much power that Sony devs will blow my mind with what they will produce next gen.

My dream ofcourse but will not happen with Ken not there anymore.

SilentNegotiator4320d ago

You people realize that they have to sell to a LOT of people to get developer support, right? That sort of backwards thinking made Sony go from king of consoles to sitting in the middle.

700$? You can get a high end PC for that.

cervantes994320d ago

Maybe, but I can't play Sony's exclusives on it.

FlyingFoxy4320d ago

try 1,000 for high end, for 700 you'd get a good mid range one tho.

papashango4320d ago

mid range is still more powerful than the rumored next-gen console specs.

mid-range is still quad core with at least gtx570/hd7870

ZombieNinjaPanda4320d ago

@Cervantes99

And with a Ps4 you can't play PC exclusives or Microsoft Exclusives or Nintendo Exclusives.

TooTall194319d ago

I built a pc for $1300 recently, and that's only with one 670. $700 would build a pretty average computer.

Norrison4319d ago (Edited 4319d ago )

@tootall
You don't know where to buy PC parts, mine got 2 gtx 670s and it costed me 1200$, 700$ would give you a high-mid end one.

Sounds great and I would love a super machine... But the game makers will not make games that take advantage of the superior system. The developers will make a games based on the lowest common denominator.

*Wii/U not included in these conversations.

solid_warlord4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

Its the same arguments as...why dont people spend $600 or more for the most powerfull graphics card every year instead. They will be able to have more pixels ect. I'll tell u wat, only nerds would throw away most of there money they earned on such nonsense of a price.

Some of us are not super rich and need to think about how we spend our money such paying bills, rent, morgages and responsible to feeding our family.

Nerds and fanboy sheeps do not need to think or prioritise over buying upgrades of what ever...they just buy it cause of there nerdish instinct.

MostJadedGamer4320d ago

animegamingnerd4320d ago

why do you want the PS4 to cost a arm and a leg?

SkullBlade1694320d ago

That didn't work out so well with the PS3 did it...

Rush4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

$700 is approaching mid to high-end PC gaming level, not to mention European markets always get screwed on exchange rates to the dollar thus places like the UK it would still end around 650-700 pound. Which means we would be paying close to 1000 dollars.

Honestly your nutty and extremely closed minded to you think other markets outside of America will accept that nonsense. In the US everything is cheaper due to the strength of the currency, but expecting the European market to pay around 1000 dollars for a console is insane.

rainslacker4320d ago

I'd like to see that as well. However, if it falls flat on it's face out of the gate then there is no hope for long term viability.

$600 was pushing it on the PS3 release, and if it wasn't for Sony's dominance of the PS2 they never would have been able to release such an expensive console.

Going into the next generation, MS and Nintendo are a much bigger competitor than they were when the PS3 released. That price is heavy, and only the most die-hard Sony fan would be willing to drop money on it.

I'm pretty die hard, and I wouldn't support that, because I know that for the most part, games won't really take advantage of it outside of 1st party titles and maybe exclusives. However the huge drop in install base would mean that it will lose a lot of developer support, which means we may not even see many multi-plats for it, and even less 3rd party exclusives.

Now imagine those that like Sony but don't play the console race card. All of a sudden MS $400-500 system looks a hell of a lot more attractive, thus making it more viable for the long term.

Ju4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

I'm not sure...it kinda worked out for the PS3...but what didn't work out is, that the one extra year and the price didn't really end up in the delivery of a massive superior console.

Now, it sold anyway, and pretty much beat the 360 now.

A visible distinction in performance for the $600 would probably pushed the majority over much faster. BD and HDD wasn't enough. But say 1GB and a better GPU would have...and it would have bought Sony probably another 1-2 years today; thus actually extending lifetime and ROI.

I think it could make sense to release later with a more sophisticated model.

However, nothing points that way. Phasing out the PS2, reducing PS3 prices etc points to a rather "early" PS4 release and with that possibly a cheaper model.

Well...what's more, though - and the WiiU shows this - the PS3/360 on the low and will be competing with those next generation machines in the own house.

I'm wondering if the low end price segment isn't already covered...

@StrongMan

PS3 started with $599, and tell me, it failed?

if people are too stupid to buy useless ipads for $500+ i dont see why people would hesitate to get the PS4.

PimpDaddy4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

It did fail. Sony had to drop the price 9 months after launch on the 60GB launch PS3 and offer 5 "free" Blu-Ray movies because the sales were so slow.

I should know. I upgraded to a 1080P LCD and bought the PS3 60GB launch model when it was $499.00 instead of $599.00 and I still felt like I was Playing Beyond too soon.

In fact the only reason I got the PS3 was for Blu-Ray. Then once WarHawk came out I finally purchased my first game. The PS3 didn't start gaining momentum till they introduced the 40GB stripped down version for $399.00 which was basically a year after the PS3 launched.

You can't compare a $500.00 tablet that can be taken anywhere and has many functions to a home console that is stationary in your living room and is primarily a videogame console.

TooTall194319d ago

If it wasn't expensive at launch, we wouldn't have blu ray.

wishingW3L4320d ago

$600 is my limit because $700 plus the taxes from where I live will make the console cost $800 easily.

rainslacker4320d ago

I'd pay $600 if it had full BC with the entire PS line. Hell even throw in PSP digital support.:D

Otherwise I think $500 top of the line model would be my limit, unless there is something spectacular about it above and beyond the other consoles.

Godmars2904320d ago

Couldn't get enough "Its too expensive!" jokes, uh?

TheFinalEpisode4320d ago

I would pay $700 for my ideal console but the truth is most people won't be able to afford one and that leads to less support from devs.

Conzul4320d ago

If the PS4 had two different versions and the base model was $400-$500, then I would gladly pay $700 for a higher-tier model if it came with, say, full backwards compatibility and a nice feature suite like OtherOS or stuff we haven't thought of yet.

Gotta be honest: I was a bit worried about their Q2 results.

But this looks very good.

Hardware declining was expected. Hardware shipments are down 22.5% year-on-year.

Most likely the Pro will catch some of the decline in hardware revenue in their Q3. Q3 could become pretty big for Playstation.

Games, Network und Services being up 12% is great, too.

Playstation's operating income is up a whopping 184%.

That's s pretty good Q2. Congrats!

How about software sales? They must have reached an all time low

Software sales seem to be up 16% year-on-year in terms of units sold, from 66.6m up to 77.7m.

Cacabunga2d ago

Dveio

I understand but wasn’t talking compared to last year which was also very empty in terms of releases but like compared to 4-5 years ago they must be at their all time low in terms of first party SW releases

dveio2d ago

How could I have known what you were truly talking about when you literally wrote:

"How about software sales? They must have reached an all time low"

Just now you've added the values:

• compared to 4-5 years ago
+
• in terms of first party

That's quite different, isn't it?

This reads extremely weird to me. But good that they went against SONY over a harmless mod.

Eonjay23d ago

It's harmless until it becomes a part of the multiplayer online landscape and you have to buy accessories in order to co.pete. I'm really torn here. I think anyone should be able to sell accessories but at the same time how does Sony protect its consumers from cheaters? I hate monopolies and I hate cheating.

How do we reconcile? Any thoughts?

jznrpg23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Sony is not monopoly and that’s not the argument here, so I don’t get the point of that.

For single player games if they can make it detect outside influence it should disable trophies. Personally I think it’s lame to cheat on single player games (that devs haven’t installed themselves) as the challenge is a lot of the fun. If people want to do it I don’t really care, but trophies should be disabled. Online games, it is definitely a potential issue for mass cheating.

Inverno23d ago

Online hacks are already a thing and those are usually taken down without much issue. This is basically a mod for a game that can only be played offline, it ain't a problem.

InUrFoxHole23d ago

@Jznrpg
Unless I read his comment wrong. I don't think he's saying sony is a monopoly. He's just stating in the gaming field he like neither monopolies and or cheating

DivineHand12523d ago

The judge made the decision because it wasn't harming anyone. It was adding enhancements to single player games.

MDTunkown23d ago

That thing won’t work in an online game.
You know back in the days we had cheats in single player games. Then the forced at us cheating ain’t cool and rebranded cheats as paid dlc and called it early unlocking. Yep, had Action Replay on PS1 also! Good times!

I'm cool w it as long as it's unusable in Multiplayer modes, and it disables trophies. I'm sure someone would find a way to skirt it though. Sounds like it would be a huge headache for Sony to implement w the modern gaming setup.

90sGamingWasBetter23d ago

The Game Genie was great, I'm also fine with people cheating on a single player game and would welcome anything that let me beat bosses on certain games that I've been completely shut out of.
