I was pretty disappointing when I opened up my PS3/blu-ray player for the first time at launch to find no HDMI cable.

The Wii U selling 2.4 million is not too bad but I remember Nintendo fans claiming that it sold more than 4 million. Where are they now? On second thought they will just discredit VGChartz... Anyway Congrats to the Sony and PS3 fans including me for PS3 being the number 1 selling video game console of 2012. That 4 million was shipped to store I'm sure. This 2.45 million is likely sold at retail to customers. Not surprising as the WiiU is much easier to get your hands on than the Wii was 7 weeks after launch.

Four years later and they're sitting at about 30% market share and still growing. One year from now and they'll likely be at over 83 million sold and only 20 million behind the Wii.

It's pretty incredible that we're going to see three consoles with over 80 million units sold, and likely 90 million+ when all is said and done.

What Greenberg said was sort of accurate. Back then they were at risk but they did pull through. I don't think anyone can deny that. I mean if you look at where they were last gen and the market share they had, it's a huge drop off but it could of been worse.. I don't think anyone would of predicted at this point that sony would be over 20 million consoles behind Nintendo before this generation started. They have some serious ground to make up next gen and PS4 just might be what they need if they come out of the gate swinging. Signs are that exactly what they plan to do with things like buying Gaikai and even more 1st party support that they had before ps3 launch. Things are looking good.

As for MS they are pretty lucky to be in the position they are in too. I don't know many corps who could come back form a fiasco like they had with the RROD situation and have a good amount of market share compared to what they had last gen. I never thought that they would sell this many consoles, let alone outsell ps3 in USA. Now that they have a decent market share and some hardcore followers they will continue to build on it. I expect them to come out of the gate swinging too and maybe even a few unexpected surprises.

When it's all said and done I guess you can say that all three have done well. Continuing to sell consoles in this global economy can't be easy but they are doing it.

Anyway, these numbers mean nothing. What they represent may be true- for instance, the PS3 being ahead for the year- but their representation is all wrong. In other words, they're only right in the general sense.

And even that may not be right.

To be honest, I'd rather not have numbers outside of the official numbers than to have this inaccurate crap.

Actually a lot of people I know bought a Vita when they found out you can play PS1 games off it; so they had a lot of their favorites on the go without the need of a PS1 anymore outside certain games that's not on the store.

I don't think we'll ever know who sold the most this year. You have VGChartz estimates showing the PS3 ahead this year, but they also showed the PS3 ahead last year while Microsoft and Sony's shipment numbers (aka the REAL numbers) clearly showed the Xbox 360 selling more worldwide in 2011. And in 2012, Sony began combining PS3 and PS2 sales in their quarterly reports, so there's no way to know exactly how much the PS3 sold in this close race with the 360. I don't know why Sony has to make things so hard when it comes to the sales game; hiding their NPD numbers, masking their shipment numbers... Microsoft just proudly announces their sales numbers - no smoke and mirrors!

about all the years prior to 2011? It still doesnt explain how Microsoft blew an entire year's headstart this gen. You're right about Vgchartz numbers being inaccurate so i'll dismiss those. But lets talk about what we do know. Microsoft announced Oct. 19th, that they sold 70 million. As of Nov. 4th ( two weeks later)Sony says ps3 sales (not ps3/ps2) passed 70 million. The facts are ps3 sells at a faster rate than xbox360, while being the most expensive of the three consoles. Next week Microsoft will release their holiday quarter reports. Early February, Sony will be doing the same.

with all due respect Microsoft did indeed "blow" an entire head start (10 million). They tried to get a jump on the current gen by releasing faulty hardware which they didn't cover until July 2007. Hardware sales actually do mean something when you're selling your system for a profit (all three now are profitable). I've owned 3 xbox360s this gen and only one 60gig ps3 (since 2007). There is not one 360 exclusive that has me excited. I cannot buy Last of US, Beyond: Two Souls, or God of War: Ascension on xbox360. You claim what i said was idiotic yet I simply stated facts. We even agreed on the fact that VGCHartz numbers are usually incorrect. Hardware matters because if you're install base isn't there then developers pass on making games for you console (IE GTA5 and Wii U).

Xbox360 had no competition for a year + and everyone who bought it, had to then get gold xboxlive.

PS3 came out very late, and with both a cheaper, casual system sold to mums and gramps, and had the 360 trying to steal hardcore.

Had the PS3 came out first, the 360 would have probably reached 45million max.

When 720/PS4 come out, it's really a case of Online,features,price. and not in that order.
