It was a good year for the PlayStation, just not in the sales department.

I don't think Sony has anything to be ashamed of this year. The PS3 proved pretty damn resilient while the 360 fell by nearly 40% and Wii sales fell off a cliff. We know that Sony hit 70.2 million at the start of November and was the only console to post year over year gains during Black Friday. That means 6.3 million consoles sold not counting the two biggest sales months of the year.

By contrast, the 360 sold 4.2 million as of the end of Sept and even sales in their biggest region were down 25% during Black Friday while the rest of the year they were down 40% year over year. Even if both consoles are down 25% over the holidays, the PS3 will still have managed to be the best selling console for 2012, and will have most likely moved into 2nd place overall despite the 360 having once enjoyed a lead of almost 9 million consoles.

So how was it not a good year for the Playstation if we're looking at sales? Because PS3 sales were down just like everyone else? Because the Vita didn't set the world on fire in it's first year? When it comes to sales it's kinda hard to argue against the PS3 this year, because we all know what everyone sold up until the holiday and the PS3 was ahead by miles. It's not like that information is secret or in dispute.

Dude calm down. I agree with everything you have to say, I wasn't talking Vita or PS3. I was talking first party games, not consoles. I own both the PS3 and Vita and I have been one of the 4+ million Vita owners that have been optimistic about the sales improving.

I have been saying the PS3 has been selling better Year over year since launch and how well it's been doing. It's just the games (they are enjoyable to play and some of the best on any console) that haven't sold as well as expected this year (I'm just talking the games that released this year), no matter what Sony says..

It seems to be back and forth between the PS3 and 360. In my opinion, the 360 had the better lineup in 2008, the PS3 in 2009, the 360 in 2010, the PS3 in 2011, the 360 in 2012, and the PS3 in 2013 from the looks of it. Unfortunately, the only exclusive I cared to play this year on my PS3 was Journey. I'm definitely looking forward to next year though!

I love how all these sites look at wonder-book like a WTF type of product. It's definitely not the sort of product I'd buy, but I'm sure none of them are going to come back in a few years time and say what a great success it has been. Wonder-book is quite literally probably going to be one of Sony's best selling IP's of all time, and is directly linked to pushing the Move controller into the casual markets hands.

You should be right, but sadly they have totally undermarketed it and casuals need marketing. It's not exactly setting the charts on fire.

Sony is awesome at core games. Casual? Not so much.

They should stick to what they're good at, and what we love.

While I haven't seen any TV ads for it, I have seen displays in Gamestop, Wal-mart, and my local target had a pretty big display right next to the Move stuff when I went in there last week. It's gotten mixed reviews by the press as far as if it's really that immersive for getting kids to read, but it is getting press outside of the gaming sites. Having a system bundle with it is also a form of marketing.

I think as more titles are released with it, and it becomes a sub-brand of playstation they may ramp up marketing. Harry Potter pretty much markets itself, so they may be holding back on it. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of it at the next E3.

I also haven't seen any sales figures yet, maybe you could direct me to some.

Going up against some pretty heavy competition and long standing IP's. However I think you may have a point, and it may be indicative of Sony's less than stellar marketing.

I don't really have a good reference on whether or not those numbers are good or bad however, it does seem 25th isn't such a bad place to be, and I don't know how amazon rates it's games.

I've been keeping an eye on it because I think it's a pretty creative use of a learning tool, and see it as being a real success for them.

I don't own either console but if PC did not exist I would go buy a playstation. It has a lot less exclusives than the PC but a lot more than the 360.

Playstation has a rediculous ammount of kick-ass 1st party games which other platforms just dont have, so personally almost every year has been PS year for me but sales unfortunatly dissagree with me lol, even games overlooked like starhawk is such a fast paced good game. Hope it goes well for sony because theyve been giving me good gaming entertainment since ps1

This year wasn´t as good as the last in terms of 1st party titles but there was plenty of great games to play regardless.

My personal favourites from this year are

1. Sounds and Shapes
2. Mutant Blobs 2 (Vita)
3. Dishonered
4.Gravity Rush
5. Mortal Kombat Vita
6. Pinball Arcade (it came out this year in europe)

These are just the games that i enjoyed a lot that i have bought however there are many other great games as well.
