Doom 3: BFG Edition Review - Dusty Cartridge

When Doom 3 released on the PC in 2004 it was met with positive reviews lauding the title for its atmosphere and impressive graphics. Nevertheless, what is an enjoyable but highly flawed shooter now was once a technical behemoth that helped influence much of what we play today. If you liked shooting stuff, and lots of it, then you really couldn’t go wrong with ID Software’s flagship FPS.

whats funny is how underpowered last gen ps3/360 consoles are

cannot even run a 9-10 year old pc game in 1080p, heck, the xbox 1 version was 480p

Make new consoles now~!

First off this should have been a Console release only. PC's didn't need it. I have the game and on the back of the box it says "1080p". When i turn on my LCD and start the game in the left hand side of my screen it says "1080p". So the game is in fact in 1080p. So much hating on these reviews and from other gamers and i don't get way. It is a game that is 10 years old and speaking first hand looks amazing. Yes the Human body shapes are goofy but AGAIN 10 years old people! The fact that the textures look nice, great detail and a buttery smooth 60fps is awesome. The game is great for any console player looking for an HD update. Dispite what Taquito thinks the game does in fact play and mind you PLAY DAMN WELL at 1080p. This game is a solid 8/10 even for people who are not familiar with the franchise. Don't go in expecting FrostBite 2 for 40 dollars. You get what you pay for here and more what more can you ask for.

@chadc, lol...its not what i think, its a FACT dude, the back of the box is a LIE!!!

its upscaled to 1080p, the native res of the game is 1280x720 and sometimes, when the gpu of the ancient ps3/360 is under too much load, its sub-hd less than 720p

upscale is the same as a dvd upscale, it still looks like poo compared to a bluray

heres an article to clarify things for you;

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

quote from article;

"There are few surprises on the console front. By and large, both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 operate at native 720p, with no anti-aliasing applied. There's a large degree of contrast between many of the visual components, leading to obvious edges and plenty of jaggies. "

"every single frame needs to be generated in under 16.67ms, but the reality is that there are so many variables in rendering any given scene that sometimes the engine inevitably runs over budget, When this happens, the framebuffer is flipped as the screen is refreshing, resulting in torn frames"

"At this point, id's internal auto-balancing code kicks in at full effect. According to Carmack, Doom 3 is a game with multiple light passes that hammers the GPU far more than Rage ever did, but regardless, the same dynamic performance optimisations are carried out here - screen resolution lowers on the fly in order to reduce GPU load until rendering times slip back beneath the 16.67ms threshold. At that point, full 720p resolution is restored."

so there you have it, at times less than 720p, tons of jaggies, and screen tearing, hilarious, like all 8 year old console games, ps3/360=last gen!
