Most years on my birthday all I’ve gotten was a free breakfast at Denny’s. In 2009, I was given the gift of Assassin’s Creed II. This year’s birthday will feature the launch of a video game console. On November 18, 2012, Nintendo plans to release their next venture into the home market by unleashing the Wii U. Preorders have been flying off the virtual shelves since Nintendo’s mouthpiece, Reggie Fils-Aime, announced price point and launch date. GameStop has stopped taking preorders and now has a waiting list for those poor lost souls who couldn’t get in on time. Analysts are saying that the launch of the Wii U is going to be the biggest thing since Pac-Man! I’m exaggerating, but they did say they expect holiday sales to go through the roof.

Because instead of that 3d Mario you mentioned, we get a lazy 3ds 2d Mario port. That Zelda game is really early in its development stage. No signs of metroid whatsoever, and smash bros is very unlikely to be coming out next year. So all those titles are eventual titles that may come out 2 years or longer from now.

I presume that's where the hate comes from and the wii also.

wait, wait, wait...so...the writer says that nintendo is lacking innovation? if you ask me, i feel as if nintendo is the only true next generation experience, look at the wii, it was the first motion controller that was highly successful. and now, look at the wii u, its integrating a touch screen into a home console, that can allow you to take it on the go. I feel like these are supreme innovations, and a huge step forward for the gaming world. and in plus, Nintendo has spent ages making innovations to the video game world, and it has influenced every other system in those generations, just as the Wii's Motion control scared the other companies into thinking they need motion control too. Maybe its just me

Hes lying.. When he sees a beautiful game that just isnt possible on other systems, he will think again.. Everyone wants to see a title that not only controls better but is graphically imposible for the others to do.. When that happens, many more ppl will jump on the wii u bandwagon.. These ports of current gen games are a good start to show theyre getting M rated multiplat games but theyre already out & cheaper for the most part on whats already owned.. Hopefully smash bros dont take longer than another yr to make & ends up looking & playing better than PSABR.. Since theyre going the PS route by adding 3DS functionality, & its going to be newer, it damn well better outclass it.. 3DS hardware is limited but theres no excuse for the wii u version to be any worse graphically.. Time will tell i guess but those HD miis & mario bros looking the same but with HD was a major turn off

Some of these points are valid, but the motion controller isn't in the dark ages, it'll be used for the next 20 years. The PSmove is my evidence of that.

I agree with benjamminkno about disagreeing with the article about motion control being in the dark ages, however the PS move is a horrendous example. (Are you being serious benjamminkno?) Wii motes are genius because they double as an old school controller for Nes, Sega, Atari etc. Also there are already millions of them in people's living rooms giving lots of people insentive to upgrade to the Wii U. (Nintendo is clever) I also believe Wii motion plus controllers have a lot of potential still, Skyward sword proved that to me.

I think a lot of people have gotten it all wrong with nintendo being the ones to be playing "catch up" with its competition. Nintendo has been leading the way long before PSBox were twinkles in their creators eye. I may be showing my age a bit but does anyone remember colecovision with the joystick dailpad, or the atari with the single button joystick? Then along came Nintendo with this wonderful new way to play called a gamepad(the original gamepad not the wii u gamepad though it too is incredible).Nintendo is the reason we interact with games the way we do today. Think N64 with its analog stick and C-pad which was used much like we use the second analog stick on every console controller today. playing catch up? really?... Nintendo innovates and the rest follow.Wiimote= psmove, kinect. Wii u gamepad= smartglass, ps3 psvita implementations. Not discounting the other companies, but they are working from proven formulas that Nintendo proved(save for wii u gamepad, they are just trying to get a jump on it this time lol). Don't misunderstand my point, I am in no way saying other systems copy nintendo in total, it is however nintendo that paves the way for these companies to do what they do. I'm just pretty tired of people bashing nintendo for making innovations in the way we interact with our games. sure they may have made some mistakes, like making waggling the primary, and in some cases the only, way to play games on the wii that would have been better suited to the gamepad. But that is a mistake that they have hopefully learned from and change with the wii u. I'm certain the wii u gamepad will be implemented remarkably for some games but not all games will have need for it and hopefully we will be able to use the pro controller. No console is, has been, nor will be perfect, but it seems nintendo catches the most shit about theirs. And all this before they even release. People started bashing before we even knew a release date, and already saying it will be beat out by the next PSBox. I own both an Xbox 360 and a Wii and I've played them equally through out this gen. Both have had good/great games. Nintendo is the first out the box into the NEXT GEN(stop comparing it to current gen, there is no comparison. we do not even know the full capabilities of the Wii u but of what we do know, it is better than current gen as all Next Gen should be). Even if the wii u come out and sucks ass, which it most certainly will not, give credit where credit is due. when you are playing on ur xbox 720 with ur touchscreen controller or ur PSOrbs with ur psvita v3.5 thank nintendo for the innovation.

He doesn't seem to take into consideration that all following 3rd party titles will release on Wii U at the same time, and will be the better versions. Though his reasoning is quite valid for the titles being released for the system now. That said, he still seems to be completely writing off the system, which is pretty bad in my book. Wii U is going to be an amazing system! Since Wii U will be getting at least a year head start, Wii U may become the lead development console from now on for upcoming multiplats because of it's always easier to port down than port up. Like when PS3 was the lead development platform instead of the Xbox 360.

that's the sad thing about this wii-hate-u articles, because the points they raise are still based on the nextbox/ps4 will be more powerful this and that; or that the 3rd party games are ports of old games...

yes it is true that the xbo720/ps4 will most likely be more powerful than the wii u, but the question everyone should consider is by how much? remember putting too much "power" into their consoles will also drive costs high (not to mention more expensive games), so in the end they'd have to think of ways to balance the "power" to how much it will cost in the market. given the current situation of the economy, and the gaming market in general, it is likely that Sony/MS will stick to a console that will be priced within $400-500 (given that both of them include large HDD space with the console), that is if they want to compete with the Wii U price range. And games to be about $70-80. When that time comes Wii U will still be the least expensive platform that offers HD games.

as for ports of old games... the thing is, the first few months of Wii U is really a litmus test of how it will perform. the idea of porting an old game like Arkham City to Wii U is one way for the dev companies to test the dev process of the new console. What better way to do it than to port an old/slightly old game, since it's more cost effective to do it. i'm not saying these companies don't trust Nintendo, but in business this is just part of strategy, while building a good relationship with a potential client. I can also understand why other companies are deciding to wait it out, again because of the same financial concerns. I admire those that fully support Nintendo's efforts though, and I'm not surprised at all: Ubisoft's been supportive of Nintendo ever since; Activision's been bringing COD to the Wii also (albeit it's lower quality form). In the next few months after Wii U's release we should be seeing more games on the Wii U that are simultaneously released with other platforms.

And I'm pretty sure a lot gamers out there are just waiting for Nintendo to impress in aspects such as more hardcore games, online play, how they'll handle the indie devs over at eShop, and how the gamepad will be used in an innovative way (other than what is shown now).

EDIT: oh, although I've played and finished Arkham City a couple of times already, I'm still gonna get me one with the Wii U. just coz it's the BAT.

following through articles lately, I read that it's cheaper to do a port, as opposed to creating a game from the ground up. so it's understandable for a company to go with a tried and tested product like Arkham City and port it to Wii U, just so it can provide support to the new platform. of course, obviously there are other factors for WB to decide to port it, but that is just my opinion with regards to ports in general.

WB, is also publishing ScribbleNauts Unlimited which will be released for the Wii U, 3DS and Windows and this is not a port.

If casuals flock to this system, and its looking like they are by presales, then its over before it even started.
Shovelware will become the norm, hardcore will cry out for more games while the endless hipster masses play their brain training and suduku puzzles on their gamepad.
Done with consoles. The 3 companies dot want me as a customer anymore, everything is catered to the casuals, so when the console bubble bursts again, the industry will go "how did this happen?" As people like me will be playing our games on PC and laughing. Was a diehard sony fan, not anymore.

How is it that "casuals" are the ones pre-ordering the Wii U? I think you don't know who is who anymore cuz most of the people who drove the Wii to high sales don't even know this console exists yet. I will also being playing on my PC and laughing because I'm enjoying my games on any platform. If you don't know how to do that the industry is probably better off without you.

i myself am a PC and a console gamer, and although PC gaming will always be ahead of console platforms in terms of technology, nevertheless it has its own share of shovelware; in fact, I reckon there are more shovelwares for PC than on any of the 3 consoles. don't get me wrong, I love the games I get to play on my PC, and I'm not afraid to admit that I do play casual games for both my PC and console. But my library comprises a mix of different game genres including FPS, Action, Adventure, RPGs and the occasional casuals.
