Why Nintendo could win the touch generation

Pocket Gamer's Kristan Reed writes: "Ever since the Nintendo DS emerged to general bewilderment in late 2004, it was only a matter of time before the gap was bridged between the touchscreen and the TV. The only surprise is that it has taken this long to become a reality. As usual, you write Nintendo off at your peril, but yet again people were lining up at E3 to stick the boot in. When will they ever learn?"

'could win the touch generation'?

sure, if you ignore Vita, phones, pads and the plethora of other devices that have been using touch for years

PopRocks3594350d ago

All of which the 3DS is currently outselling? In which case, it's not unreasonable to ignore them.

bothebo4350d ago

Umm, it can't even touch the iPhone. The iPhone sold 32.5 million units in Q2. Hate to burst your bubble there.

PopRocks3594350d ago

@bothebo

Currently the 3DS is the fastest selling handheld gaming device. I'm not counting Apple products because they're not dedicated gaming devices, particularly its cell phone products.

Never thought I'd see the day where a self-respecting gamer would use an iPhone as the means to argue against a point regarding Nintendo's success. Small world.

Like it or not, iOS devices are gaming platforms just as much as a ds is. Touch screens are a preference and doesn't factor in its role as a gaming device. The app store has more games than you will ever play excelling in both quantity and quality. Developers like rockstar, square Enix, capcom, epic games, ea and game loft support the platform with open arms. Play games like galaxy on fire, chaos rings, real racing, dark meadow, nova 3, max Payne and dozens of other games, it's an amazing experience. Instead of being a closed minded ass, I embraced them and now I hardly pay attention to the controls when gaming on it.

No, they're multimedia devices that happen to have video games on them; there's a difference between that and a dedicated gaming device.

It's ridiculous to list an iPhone and a Playstation Vita/3DS in the same category since the former is a phone with a ton of features while the other two are primarily designed for dedicated video gaming.

3rd party support doesn't change anything. I don't care who makes games for iOS devices. Netflix is supported on Wii; does that make it a movie streaming device? No, it's a video game console that has a movie streaming feature.

And no thanks; I don't want to play any of those games. I don't like isolated touch controls. I like buttons and I like playing games on handhelds on consoles where playing games come before anything else.

If you've read this far, I truly hope you're able to respect an honest difference of opinion. I hate iOS gaming, period. I don't consider it on the same level of depth, convenience and practicality as actual dedicated gaming devices because an iPhone is what it is; a phone that plays games, not a gaming handheld with a phone feature.

You realize that DS was using touchscreens for years also right?

I believe those sold pretty well...

mike1up4350d ago

Aren't people already ignoring the Vita?

Salamander4350d ago

I dont think they can directly compete withh Apple, but in gaming, they could.

greenpowerz4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

If they can come with a plan and tech that can bridge the gap between all digital devices in the home then they have a fair shot. I fear wantever they come up with will be restricted and too nintendo centric(not open enough. Limited by software and hardware plus vision)

I'm not sure what they mean by "touch generation". Seems touch simply augments the "connected generation" a single minded game company can't win in the so called touch generation when nintendo has a isolated technology approach.

Wii U will beat Microsoft's smart glass. MS say "oh yeah well smart glass can hook up to all these gadgets" but thats not the point of Wii U. If you think smart glass will be more relevant than Wii U I have two words for you. Buttons and Mario.

People won't buy Wii U for the sake of making it compatible with televisions and phones. They will buy it for Mario and Zelda. And the buttons are a requirement.

I have a bad feeling about Microsoft's new direction. They seem to be trying to rid controllers of buttons but you need them.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
