Boy kills dad with sledgehammer after banned from playing computer games

After having his keyboard taken away as punishment, a 14-year-old Russian murders his father with a sledgehammer.

I think life in prison or a mental institution makes more sense than killing the obviously insane individual. Of course, this is speaking as a third party. If someone killed one of my family members, I guess I wouldn't want the culprit to just go to jail.

Obviously there is such thing as a gaming addiction. You can get addicted to pretty much anything. This is a sad story, and its unfortunate that this kid clearly already had some mental issues, but it seemed like gaming is what finally 'triggered' this type of behavior for this particular guy. And because of that the story will get twisted into making it seem like the game is what was the root cause of his instability.

When I was brought up my parents told me that video games was a luxury and that what I play is not real. When I was raised I was afraid of my parents now its the other way around! I had to be "good" to play games, if I didnt go outside or get good grades the NES/PS1 would go bye-bye tell I got my grades up or went outside for at least a few hours.

My parents actualy raised me and played games with me. These days too many parents have video games babyset their kids and let me tell you, that's a dangerous mindset.

I wouldn't point fingers completely at parents here, a teenager is still old enough to make important decisions that would impact him and people around him. Regardless of what one learns at home, they are still learning outside of their home, whether or not they choose to abide by what's right is one's own choice. This kid goes Raskolnikov on his dad for a game??? (sorry bout the literary reference...pick up a book for once...LOL) It is OBVIOUS that there has been an issue with this child. Maybe the parents just allowed the game to be the therapy for him...or maybe they just weren't able to pay enough close attention to the fact that their child had issues? Either way, this is just plain SAD! I understand the calls for death for this kid, but if there is a true mental illness (which is highly likely), then killing him is NOT a complete solution. Yes, you rid the world of a sick individual...but have you REALLY attacked the root of the problem which is the mental issue at hand? We just need to realize that mental illness should be treated (in society and clinically) as seriously as we treat any other physical ailment.
