"PS4 Bites Back: Sharper Gaming Teeth Make Xbox One Look Like a Meek Media PC" says Stuff Magazine

Suff Magazine has revealed the front cover of its August 2013 issue, and guess what it has on it, Sony's next-gen Playstation console "PS4" with a tagline "PS4 Bites Back" and "Sharper Gaming Teeth Make Xbox One Look Like a Meek Media PC".

SniperControl3965d ago

The juggernaut that is PS4, keeps on rolling!

Good to see that serious tech magazines are finally getting on Sony's side for this next gen.

EXCLUSIVE PS4 feature, right there lol! ;P

OT: This is an incredibly bold magazine cover - reminds me of the Edge one from last week.

The media won't suffer MS antics anymore than us gamers...good job too. MS need to be hit in the pocket before they will change their ways and this is a strong message to them. Here's hoping it works and they buck their ideas up...

YNWA963965d ago

@ Sniper, yeah, under that hook too, but its a good life, I left out humour as well... people to serious about hardware and paintshop pictures of women, but married life is good... when the wife cannot think of what to get me anymore, I just leave gadget magazines laying around.... works! :)

@ Killrate, relax, it was a statement that asked for a response... take it easy.... I am sure Zeee was more interested in the polygons on the babe than the PS4... or at least I hope so!

@Gman0174

It's true haters are gonna hate.

Great cover, this isn't the last article like this we are going to see in the upcoming months.

insomnium23965d ago

I wish we get a whole new MS after this console nosedives (hopefully)completely. As they are MS is nothing but a parasite to this industry ever since x360 launched imo. They always give less than they take.

Then more sex.

Yeah but do you think the Xbox One looks like a 'Meek Media PC' in comparison?

I don't think that headline is justifiable at all. The X1, albeit weaker of the two consoles, still is an extremely capable machine. Yes its previous policies and mandatory Kinect left a lot to be desired, but what can the PS4 do that the X1 can't?

Or am I wrong?

3965d ago
Run_bare3965d ago

The PS4 can change the nature Xbox One, e.g. DRM, 24hrs online check in, etc.

Without PS4, XBOX One will still have the restriction today.

That is why PS4 is a Win for everyone, beside, they have the strongest specifications compare to X1.

Geezus3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@septic your right but your on a sony dominated website so your "wrong"

MariaHelFutura3965d ago

"but what can the PS4 do that the X1 can't?"

Be better, smaller, cheaper, keeps playing w/o a camera, gives straight PR answers and never requires an internet connection.

Jdoki3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

I think what they are getting at is that Sony have sent some clear messages, but MS have not and it's making them look meek and apologetic.

Sony have made their aims clear:
1. We have made a games console
2. We have the best 1st party devs in the world
3. We embrace all developers, and in particular Indie devs
4. We are the champion of all gamers, and will defend the hardcore

In comparison MS can't seem to send out a clear message. How many 'clarifications of clarifications' have we seen.

MS have made it unclear:
1. We think DRM is the future, except, umm, we can't give a reason why.
2. We have the cloud, that does ermmm, something to turbo charge games, but we promise it's great
3. We love Indie devs, really, honestly, just don't listen to the top indie devs saying the opposite
4. We say hardware specs don't matter, except when we say they do matter
5. We have loads of games and are expanding 1st party studios, but err, yeah, umm, Ryse anyone?
6. Halo TV show anyone? We have The Spielbergs
7. It's rocket science level stuff
8. Halo 5 anyone?
9. Kinect 2.... It does, stuff, and is going to be better supported than Kinect 1, honest, but we have no games to prove it because Ryse is now controller only.
10. We have a clear strategy of integrating with existing cable boxes, and providing innovative ways of watching TV, just err, don't ask what we're delivering outside of the US.

I have no doubt in terms of hardware that multiplats will look similar, but MS have done a really bad job convincing anyone that XBox is a serious brand for gamers.

Gazondaily3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@Jdoki

Great response but then it isn't necessarily the console itself that's the problem, its MS itself and the way it's handling the situation.

'Meek Media PC' just doesn't seem to make sense at all. It's as if this article was written post X1 reveal but pre E3.

Btw, none of the replies have thus far explained why the description above is justified.

Jdoki3965d ago

@Septic

I absolutely agree. The problem isn't the console, it's the message MS have given.

Nuts is a sensationalist magazine, so they are using an extreme comparison. It may not be fair, but when have we ever seen credible journalistic integrity in the industry!

morganfell3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@Geezus,

Where were you for the past 5 years? Half of this turn is brought on by MS themselves, is very recent. And Sonylistening to the devs and gamers brought the other half. Apparently you missed all the PS3 is teh doomed articles. So many that at one point every hottest article in the main stream at the top of the page was about Sony's imminent death.

It's called karma so you had better get used to it.

sentury1113965d ago

So, is there anything the PS4 can do that the X1 can't.

And don't list any exclusives. Seriously.

Picnic3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

Explode stuff up in to lots more particles than ever before it appears. At least that's what Sony's demos, Knack included, were at pains to show. If the XboxOne is also capable of it they weren't concentrating on showing it.

Nicaragua3965d ago

You are right the problem is the way MS is handling the siutaion - but these are the guys you are entrusting your expensive entertainment to for the next 7 years and to be honest they are making themselves out to look like complete bell-ends.

The only trace of direction they have points to casual, their track record of providing games throughout a consoles life cycle is abysmal, and the management team has no idea what they are doing - this is the situation.

DARK WITNESS3965d ago

@ sentury111

MS have said nothing about being able to take over a friends console and play their game. That was one feature I thought was interesting from sony's part.

There are some features I have not heard MS talk about but I would assume the xb1 can do them like power off and resume a game from where you powered off (like a pause function I guess) etc...

being able to take over a friends controller and play their game remotely, not heard them mention that at all.

solar3965d ago

"but what can the PS4 do that the X1 can't?"

nothing. both are going to be nearly the same when it comes to multiplats, just like last gen, that sell more and gather more attention to consumers. exclusives, both will have their advantages over the other.

flipflopfacts3965d ago

Xbox one is like the tabloid section on N4G. It's just there to look nice.

Gazondaily3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

45 disagrees....a dozen or so responses and not one response that gave a reasonable answer to my question:

"what can the PS4 do that the X1 can't".

So, why am I being disagreed with again? Ah nevermind. I know the answer.

sentury1113965d ago

@Dark Witness I remember hearing about that feature. That could be useful. Hopefully it's something MS implements. Do you know if it's on the developers end or will be done on all games?

flipflopfacts3965d ago

@Disagree

I guess the Xbox one doesn't look nice...

YNWA963965d ago

@ Geezus,
You are correct, but obviously wrong. PS4 also makes lunch...

DragonKnight3965d ago

@Septic: Technically speaking, there is nothing that either console can do that the other can't excluding peripherals. The difference is focus and implementation which makes the PS4 look like a gaming console compared to the Xbox One looking like a media PC.

For example, the Xbox One has dedicated 3GB of RAM for their media based OS' while the PS4 has dedicated 1GB of RAM for it's entire OS. When you have 5GB of RAM for gaming vs. 7GB of RAM, it's not hard to look at which one is designed for gaming first and which one isn't.

Then you have the huge focus placed on Smartglass.

So from a technical perspective they both can do what they both can do, but aren't focused that way.

NewMonday3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@Septic
"what can the PS4 do that the X1 can't?"

- it can do 50% more TFLOPS (better graphics)
- GPU can do computations (more CPU potential)
- 8gb of unified GDDR5 RAM will give better textures, frame rates and faster loading.
- developers can "code to the metal" giving even more power.
- better social features
- always recording game-play, no need for set up or "ordering" before hand.
- instant sharing
- play any game remotely on Vita
- 3rd party games will run better
- better design and more compact
- larger number of 1st party studios bring much more exclusives and with variety.
- no need for power brick
- more games for launch
- easy development and self-publishing will give the PS4 a bigger games library
- many free games and discounts with PS+
- consumer trust
- all for $100 less

had enough?

you can futilely downplay these points, but this why the PS4 is taking all the hype.

Death3965d ago

What can the PS4 do that the Xbox One can't?

Both are x86 based machines, both have Blu-ray, both have sufficient ram at 8 gigs, both use a custom GPU by AMD. Essentially they are the same machine. The differences being form factor and choice of RAM. It is unclear how much different they will be in a real world environment. They both even have a paid online service too.

So what is different? Exclusives obviously. But not what you are looking for and kind of a moot point since it's all on personal preference. The one thing it will do the Xbox One won't is integration with the Vita, but it's not clear how much will be done. Same can be said of Microsoft's integration with smart glass.

Honestly the question should be, what can the XboxOne do that the PS4 can't? This one is kind of obvious with the inclusion of Kinect. The camera and mic included with every system gives you added features the PS4 doesn't. Voice commands and movement/gesture controls are one thing. The HDMI input and integration with your cable provider is another. Being connected to all your friends at all times while the tv is on is another. The Xbox One is a "connected" console that embraces social gaming and media.

I guess the biggest thing the PS4 does is offer less in the box. Playstation fans call this choice and label it as "freedom". They aren't being "forced" to have more features. They are being forced to pay to play online though. That must be the karma I was reading about up above.

Gazondaily3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@newmonday

- it can do 50% more TFLOPS (better graphics)
- GPU can do computations (more CPU potential)
- 8gb of unified GDDR5 RAM will give better textures, frame rates and faster loading.

** All this makes the X1 a meek media pc? Hold on, didn't developers like Kojima and others say there was no notable difference?

- developers can "code to the metal" giving even more power.

** Right...so you're basically reguritating your previous point and then making things up here. Should I take your word over Kojima's?

- better social features
** How?

- always recording game-play, no need for set up or "ordering" before hand.
** And how do you know the X1 doesn't do this? Last I read, the PS4 was supposedly recording around 3 minutes backlog. Where are your links?

- instant sharing
** What? Why is this not possible on X1??

- play any game remotely on Vita
**Okay- that's good.
- 3rd party games will run better
**Right okay
- better design and more compact
** I thought N4G said it didn't matter what the box looked like after the Feb reveal remember? But okay...this is hardly a big point is it.

- larger number of 1st party studios bring much more exclusives and with variety.
**Hmm so MS investing $1 billion means nothing to you I guess. You'll also downplay the launch line-up of the X1 no doubt.

- no need fore power brick
** Okay...this is a big point?

- more games for launch
**Quality over quantity. Titanfall may not be launch but its the best rated E3 game and is coming out on the X1 first.

- easy development and self-publishing will give the PS4 a bigger games library
- many free games and discounts with PS+
- all for $100 less
- consumer trust
**ALL of the above irrelevant to question of how the PS4 looks like a 'Meed Media PC'

I'm sorry but your response was poor.

The answer clearly lies in the way MS bodged things up in the manner in which they handled things. The console itself however is impressive. Do note that I haven't mentioned the things the X1 can.

[edit] the chap above me has mentioned them

sentury1113965d ago

@ death That's what should be talked about. What can't the PS4 do that the X1 can.

Hardware specs put aside, PS4 with DDR5 and Xbox with esram and the 4 emotion chips and slightly different GPUs they are very similar.

People hate on the idea of the cloud because they talk about infinite power. But the X1 just needs a little more to surpass the PS4 not 4TFs. That is very doable with current tech.

The X1 has way more features the PS4 can't touch because of the hardware that differentiates it like Kinect, hdmi in and software. If you want it or not the Xbox has more ability.

G20WLY3965d ago

@Septic, Newmonday posted a worthy response to YOUR question (copied from your post above):

"45 disagrees....a dozen or so responses and not one response that gave a reasonable answer to my question:

"what can the PS4 do that the X1 can't"."

He gets a 'Helpful' bubble from me for taking the time to reply, only for you to move the goalposts and throw his efforts back in his face. smh

As for the 'meek media PC' jibe, that was stuff magazine, not 'N4G fanboys', so maybe calm down and pick it up with the publishers directly, that way your frustration might serve a purpose.

Personally, I do agree with your point, that it's less to do with the tech and more to do with Microsoft's positioning of it that enables Stuff magazine to get away with headlines like this.

TheTwelve3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

"What can the PS4 do that the X1 can't".

Here's my take:

1. The PS4 does indeed have greater hardware. It's hardware more focused on gaming rather than media. The resulting graphics will depend on the developer, but the potential will be greater on the PS4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I believe the PS4 has clearer and already shown better graphics in their first batch of games than the X1 has.

2.Microsoft will not be able to catch up with Sony in these endeavors: 1st party investment, indie support, Playstation+. They may come along and try to copy Sony, but Sony is already leagues ahead.

3. The X1 will not sell around the world like the PS4 will. The pre-orders around in different regions show that the initial race will only be closer in the US. This will and always has meant more support will go to the most relevant console.

4. The PS4 has, if you will, the "trust" of the hardcore gaming community. The X1, if you will can't get that back.

5.The PS4 will always be better bang for your buck. Always.

12

P.S. People act like the PS4 and X1 is two companies starting from the same starting block. This is very far from the truth. Sony is starting from a position of reaching its stride from this gen. All of the positive things surrounding it began in the latter part of this gen. It's going to be very hard for Microsoft to catch up and 2013 is showing that clearly.

Funnymonkey0133965d ago

Well 4 one it has way better 1rst party games and games that can't be done on it unless downgrade 4 x1. 2 ps plus is way better now then live 3rd it has free 2 play games that one of them planet side 2 I'm sure cant be done on x1. 4th it's more future proof console with better specks wich means we will c lots of features that r only on ps4. And last the price u would be a fool to buy a weaker system 4 more money then a better console 4 less.

NatureOfLogic3965d ago

Here are two important thing to me that PS4 can do and X1 can't. Try any game instantly without downloading the game and B/C through "cloud" service(PS1, PS2 and PS3 games).

Death3965d ago

B/C through cloud service? You and I have much different definitions of backward compatability. Buying games again as a download is hardly incentive to buy a PS4. Playing my PS3 games on my PS4 would be nice. If you are saying the PS4 will recognize my PS3 games and download them for free, I'm all over it.

The amount of ram being used by the PS4 vs the XboxOne is an interesting debate. I see some say that having less for the OS is better. I'm not sure how being able to do less in the background is more. Both consoles are watered down PC's by design. Battlefield 3 as an example has recommended specs of 4 gigs of ram and 1 gig on the video card. http://bf3blog.com/battlefi...

Both current consoles also played the game with much much less. If my PC with 16gigs of ram on the mb and 2 gigs of ram on the videocard plays the same game, what's the point of all the extra cash I dumped? The difference is in the settings. I can play the game maxed and still have insane framerates while a "lesser" system may look the same, but have a frame rate drop. The PS4 and XboxOne should look identical with a possible difference in frame rates if the same formula runs true.

An interesting thing to see will be what the consoles can also do while gaming and how it affects performance. I bought 16 gigs of ram since I also use my PC as a media center. Any number of devices can access my media content while I play without taking a hit on performance. With 3 gigs of ram being used for OS on the Xbox, it would make sense that it has more capability while gaming. The PS4 with 1/3 the ram allocated will have to choose what it does and when.

What does this mean for gaming? Consoles have always done more with less compared to PC's. If a current PC game utilizes 5 gigs for gaming when they have access to much more, why would the PS4 benefit from the additional ram? Third parties developing for PC, XboxOne and the PS4 aren't going to make games any different and there is no business model that rewards developers that spend more money making games. The PS3 with it's blu-ray drive had the potential to make games 2-3 times longer than DVD based games or atleast with 2-3 times as many textures.

It didn't happen. Having potential isn't the same as actually having something. The PS4 with it's 2 more gigs of ram dedicated to games doesn't necessarily mean it will use it. I would love to see it happen, but history has shown having the ability to do something doesn't make it happen.

We will see later this year when both consoles launch and we actually play the games and use the services.

the xbox 1 does a hell of alot more then the ps4 if u ask me.. the biggest game in the industry whether we like it or not is cod an where do cod players play? ill answer on xbox live so that bein said xbox 1 wont nosedive gout outta buisness... the fact u can be on skype will playin a game at the same time jus gives gamers more time to play before u had to stop playin now u dont... do u really need this feature no but why not its gonna be sweet for sure....ull be streaming on xbox 1 to twicth tv where do all gamers go twitch tv not uplay the whole tv crap , the kinect crap i mean overall besides specs id say xbox offers more an bein there upgrading xbox live which allready shits all over psn can u imagine playin on dedictaed servers another thing ps wont have.. i dunno why so many people like playstation more then xbox but thats there choice i dont see a comparision yea sony is a better hardware developer an there system all seems stronger but how did that help the ps3?

How old are you kid? I explained it to you already, I broke down his every reply and his final set of statements didn't even refer to the console itself. So he digresses and you criticise me of changing goal posts?

Wow, so you're going to call me out for an auto correct error? How desperate are you? I'm willing to bet I'm far more educated than you. Want to place a wager?

Ha! Feeling brave behind that keyboard are we? You need more than a lecture judging by your complete inability to comprehend anything I say. Carry on being as clueless as you are.

G20WLY3962d ago

Testy, aren’t we? You’re my bitch now, enjoy! ;)

Are you a politician? You should be; you talk a lot, without making any notable contribution. I’ll give you one thing; what you lack in debate, you make up for in circumvention.

How old am I? What judgement would you apply if you knew the answer to this? Would it make you feel good if you were older? Younger? I’m intrigued; indulge me with your rationale. Smh

“Auto-correct error”. You realise that in order to be auto-corrected, you had to have made an error yourself, don’t you? That’s how it works. And to make it worse, you accepted the proposed adjustment, thus making a second error. That’s what rage will do. And yet, you insinuate I’m a keyboard warrior! So yeah, I’ll call you out. Lol at you…

And as for feeling brave, I always do. Why shouldn’t I? You want to willy-wave, but you picked the wrong guy and just about every level - body, mind, money, success all very good this end thanks, but sure, I’ll concede I have a weakness...I don’t suffer fools, hence our little chat.

Be gentle with me, friend :)

Yep... at this moment the PS4 is the better deal. Microsoft really needs a cheaper version of the X1 without Kinect to compete. If they really wanted to compete, they could release a X1 without Kinect at 350$.

n4rc3965d ago

Since when is stuff a serious tech magazine? Lol

kneon3965d ago

Who said it was? But articles in magazines like this have more impact than articles in "serious tech magazines". The mainstream consumer is far more likely to read Stuff and other media of that kind than they are to read any real tech magazine.

And the people who read such magazines are more likely to be influenced by what they read than would us jaded hard core techies.

YNWA963965d ago

I think mainstream will be picking up MAXIM or FHM over STUFF... Mainstream never get influenced by magazines either. Only technofiles will even read the article... mainstream see COD, buy machine... thats it... simple...

SniperControl...you're married? And you made a complete fanboy comment like that? Seriously, no adult should be rooting for one console to dominate...not one that understands how competition benefits price and innovation anyway.

SniperControl3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

WTF has me been married got to do with anything?

I will guarantee 100% that there are brands out there that you will not touch due to bad past experiences or just brand loyalties. It is just like Samsung Vs iphone or BMW Vs Audi. It is the same with Sony Vs MS(or even Nintento to an extent).
I have always liked my Sony stuff from when I was a little lad. Sony has bought me years of happiness through thier products, be it with Walkmans, MD players and consoles. They have always and will always have a family vibe to them. In all the years of buying Sony, only one thing has gone faulty on me. I still have My PS1, PS2 and PS3, all working fine apart from the PS3 fans being loud.
On the other hand, I just see MS as a power hungry, greedy, monopolizing conglomerate just out to screw everyone over. There new windows OS is just awful and buggy as hell, but I have no choice but to use it as other OS are just as bad. I have had 3 X360's, 2 RROD on me, the second one after 4 months, MS had the gaul to replace it with a refurbished one, I complained about it, they said tough shit buddy. The 3rd one I won in a raffle and sold it after a week.
So you'll excuse me if I am a Sony fanboy, it is my goddamn right to be one.
I have no problem with the X1, it is a powerful console with amazing features, my problem lies with MS themselves.

chrismichaels043965d ago

This isn't media spin or a conspiracy like some biased people claim. Every major gaming and tech magazine and website is praising the PS4 because the system is impressive and deserves all the positive praise it has been receiving. This isn't a knock against MS or the Xbox One. A lot of people are just simply more impressed with the PS4. It is what it is. Either way, congrats to Sony for continuing the positive momentum leading up to a successful launch.

PS4 has the PR, specs, first party studios and price behind it. Any magazine or site that argues otherwise are deluded.

B-radical3965d ago

Am i deluded for thinking xbone has a better launch line thus far

ApolloTheBoss3965d ago

Yes because the majority of those "exclusives" will be multiplatform.

Jdoki3965d ago

You're not deluded, it's your opinion, which is fair enough.

At the moment the XBO looks like it has quantity, but the PS4 has quality. I believe MS said they had 18 exclusives for year 1 and Sony said they had 20 - so there's a lot of missing information right now from both sides.

Sony have Gamescom and TGS to flesh out their launch line up - and I don't think MS are attending either of those events.

variety is always a good thing, so I'm not knocking MS for showing a lot of interesting stuff - but I know (from experience of PS1, 2 and 3) that Sony will likely deliver - they've not yet shown anything from most of their 1st party studios.

Sitdown3965d ago

So you can't have a great launch line up because most of your exclusives might become multi platform? Geeeez, the logic on here continues to set new lows on a daily basis.

warewolfSS3965d ago

No. I don't think so dude. They realease how many games at e3, and. Announced future exclusives. All Sony did was Announce that they can share games, lower price and some multiplatss

SoapShoes3965d ago

I'd say so because most of what they showed aren't launch titles but coming in the first year....

S2Killinit3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@B-radical
Your not deluded but don't forget, MS always comes out the gate strong (remember 360? they had Gears, a 'must have' game that made me go buy their system) But MS's game plan is to purchase exclusivity (timed or not) and they can only afford that at the beginning of each console generation when the install bases are relatively small. (otherwise developers will ask for more money to keep games away from Playstation). For MS this works just fine becaue around the middle of each generation MS stops catering to core gamers anyway and focuses on casuals/application/kinect. That is why they don't invest in development studios. I find it sad that gamers who buy consoles for games fall for this system and still support them. But also, I think the reason you think MS's line up was 'better' was because Sony had already announced some of its heavy hitters like Killzone, and Infamous before E3 so the impact they had was reduced at the conference. Its important to note that before E3 MS was hard pressed to really wow everyone with games since they somehow 'forgot' to show games at the reveal of a gaming console, which brings the question 'why'? why would they focus on casuals when releasing a gaming console? (refer to above) Because of the negative reaction to the reveal MS was under pressure so they just dumped everything they had at E3, whereas Sony was in no such trouble. They were going after MS's conference and they KNEW that all they needed to win was to give gamers the good news about DRM and Price to win it. They only showed the amount of games they needed and nothing more. They left the rest for the remaining games conferences before release: TGS, and Gamescom. So expect a whole lot from Sony and not much from Microsoft at those conferences. Sony held out so they could wow everyone closer to release.
PS: I just read Jdoki's comment where he says Microsoft isn't even attending TGS and Gamescom which pretty much proves it. But we shall see. Happy gaming.

keabrown793965d ago

@Apollo not trolling as I'm getting a PS4 first, but really curious.. which ones? And before you start I don't consider PC to be a part of multiplatform as I consider them to be console exclusives.

Ryse - exclusive,
Titanfall - exclusive atm "I hope that changes" Project Spark - Exclusive
Dead Rising 3 - Exclusive
Forza 5 - Exclusive
Sunset Overdrive - Exclusive
Quantum Break - Exclusive
Killer Instinct - Exclusive
Crimson Dragon - Exclusive

vs Sonys

Infamous Second Son
Killzone
Drive Club
Knack
"Then a bunch of Indie games, while good no doubt, don't move systems"

As I said I feel that Sony has the better system but Microsoft showed way more exclusive games.

Bruce_Wayne3965d ago (Edited 3965d ago )

@ keabrown79

You forgot to mention that PS4 also has:
Outlast
The Witness
Deep Down
The Order: 1886
Planetside 2
Blacklight Retribution

Btw, you said you don't count PC as multiplatform so these games I listed do count as exclusives based on your assumption.

Well you can't hide the truth it's the more powerful machine with better value for money unless you really really really like Kinect.

Not being biased I've said I'll happily get an Xbox One if they got rid of the mandatory Kinect but I just can't see it happening which is a shame.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus2314h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos4h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear212h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot22h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

Jon615863h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

RNTody23h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead12h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage5h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast22h ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn197921h ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel13h ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19793h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage5h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow2d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1821d 23h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie1d 14h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere1d 4h ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow15h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX2d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney9h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Sheppard7t31d 23h ago

How did Sony kill the series?

Inverno1d 23h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

1d 8h ago
fsfsxii1d 10h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno1d 8h ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
