Make It So – Nintendo’s Skylanders Killer

Chaz at Twinfinite writes:

It’s been some time (25 years, in fact) since Nintendo made a showing at Toy Fair, the world’s largest toy exhibition show, as an exhibitor. They jumped back in this year, sparking a lot of idle talk about what it was they might have been showcasing that would prompt the change of heart. I don’t normally dip into rumours and hearsay, but this got a lot of things going in my brain, and even though it doesn’t appear as if the gaming behemoth made any spectacular ripples at their booth, the gears turning in my skull simply refuse to stop. With all that in mind, I think the time is right, and the market ripe, for Nintendo to jump into the NFC-enabled toy-supported game pool.

Skylanders was a kids fad and dinsey got theirs out at the right time when thus comes out evetone would have moved on!

Toys and dlc are evil anyway its like ea and capcom had a meeting on how to market dlc to children and make it look half decent to the parents buying it hence the toy part!

Just my opinion please reply and tell me why buying a game for £40 and then buying each character for £7 is good for us gamers?

Evil? More like freaking marketing GENIUS.

"But mom...this guy can shoot farther than the other one!..I NEEEEED him!!!"

Wow your out today trolling on all articles possible today. This is like the 4th negative comment you have made today either at Microsoft and now Nintendo. Chill with the hate...

OT: I hope Nintendo releases a game much like Skylanders with Nintendo characters. I was just saying to my wife the other day. I would stop playing Skylanders to play a Nintendo license property. I would go out all out and crazy to own EVERYTHING they release for the game. (If its good mind you lol)

I own a wii u btw...

I dont agree with this type of game marketed at kids and is over £100 for the complete set when something like minecraft helps their creativity and helps your learn other basic skills for £15!

Would you prefer this or a wii u version of minecraft?

Why is it worth it? Why isn't it? We buy DLC and other add-on content for money -- and this, you get a physical toy as well, which kids can (and, in my experience will) play with outside of the game. It's no different, to me, than buying tie-in toys to any other game, TV show, or whatever else, but with the added benefit of being able to use them in-game.

Excellent article...

But I think it would make more sense to make a full on new Pokémon game using this type of design.

Imagine a new Pokémon game for WiiU done in the same manner as the portable versions. For example they can have Pokémon WiiU Alpha and Beta! Two separate games and each one comes with three starter Pokemon action figures. Of course the three would be different depending on which version of the game you played.

Now instead of finding the pokemon in game now you have to find them in stores, limited editions, store exclusives, mail in orders, timed exclusives, etc, etc. As an added incentive make the Pokémon cards compatible with the WiiU game giving special power ups or traits when battling.

Later on Nintendo can start releasing older Pokémon figures from past games to the roster. There are so many that Nintendo can keep this going for a while and be very successful.

The game of course needs to have a great online network component so people could battle each other around the world.

What this author suggested is cool, but in my opinion this tech should be reserved for Pokémon.

As I mentioned in the article, they've used it a bit for Pokémon (in Pokémon Rumble) and I think that's the safe bet for how they'll do it. Ideally, I'd love to see them do both, though! I'm not a Pokémon player, but I love the Skylanders games (and we've sunk money into a pretty decent collection, lol) & I'd really like to see a similar style game with more of my nostalgia-soaked characters!

maniacmayhem3733d ago

Yea, I read about Pokémon rumble but in my opinion it's not really the full on Pokémon game I think would fit better in a Skylander style.

To me it's Nintendo's way of dipping their toes in the hot tub instead of going all in.

I have no problems with Skylanders too. I thought it was an awesome idea and I wondered why no one had done it before. PS3 had a game called Eye of Judgement and I thought that game was pure genius. It's too bad it didn't take off the way I had hoped. But I thought why not Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic the Gathering? And then I thought why not toys?

I wish I had the investment and business knowledge because Toys for Bob beat me to it.

I really hope they announce some sort of partnership with Legos at this thing.

Geekman3732d ago

I have zero interest in Skylanders, but Nintendo could make decent Pokemon profit off of the idea.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
