How Valve’s SteamOS Can Save Console Gaming

SteamOS will potentially provide the same level of convenience that console games have mastered for years, yet still provide the freedom and flexibility of PC gaming. Freedom is the key theme of Valve’s new direction. The open operating system allows any manufacturer to build their own Steambox. Hell, consumers can even build their own Steambox. As someone who has been building PC’s for years, this is very exciting.

Console gaming needs saving? I think the figures of GTA might prove otherwise.

ministeamreviews3866d ago

Maybe "revive" is the better term. Consoles are stale. It's the same old thing every time with a bump in technical specs. For me personally, the console love is just simply gone. What valve is offering is the most excited I've been for a console since the Gamecube was announced.

jujubee883866d ago (Edited 3866d ago )

I've had a gamecube and it wasn't exciting at all. So stop it.

PS4 is more than hype enough for me. More than hype enough. HYYYYYPPPPEEE!!!

ministeamreviews3866d ago

That's what I'm saying. Consoles aren't exciting any more. The Gamecube was exciting to me because it was a pretty significant leap from the N64. Now the difference isn't really that outstanding. I'm burned out. Tired. I want my game collection to be useful beyond one piece of hardware. Enter SteamOS/Steambox.

Hicken3866d ago

So, because you're not excited, all the strong sales of the current gen, plus all the hype for the upcoming consoles, and somehow it needs saving?

Yeah, I'm gonna call BS.

admiralvic3866d ago

@ Ministreamreviews

Were they ever THAT interesting in the first place? Throughout gaming history we pretty much just see current things get implemented (like CD playback) and bumps in graphics. At the end of the day, it's the games that are interesting, not the systems themselves. In that respect I don't see SteamOS making a difference. It simply seems like a mid point between PC and Console, though not one I would say is a completely game changing and earth shattering event. Now if they get Half Life 3, Portal 3, Left for Dead 3 and such exclusively... it might become interesting, though this all goes back to my point about the games.

ministeamreviews3866d ago

@admiralvic
I agree that at the end of the day it's about the games. Yes, Valve needs to show some strong exclusives to win people over. I play a lot of indie games, though, so this is already a win for me. Valve is way more friendly to independent developers than console manufacturers are.

"It's the same old thing every time with a bump in technical specs. "

The definition of PC gaming...

UltimateMaster3866d ago

The PS4 never pre-ordered as much, or sold ever in it's first week in it's history and the last champion was the PS2 with 1.5 Million the first week and the PS4 is already beating that.

Sure, NOBODY wants the next gen console./s
Yeah right.
The numbers proves otherwise.

thisismyaccount3865d ago

But... but PC has no games!

or the 300 million combined units sold last gen between the wii,360 and ps3 proved other wise ...and GTA selling a billion worth in 3 days, PC gamers petitioning to get said game currently ;)...LOL this is funny

GrizzliS19873866d ago

dude nothing worse than a PC elitist. Bunch of idiots spending thousands of hardware and then begging for games that might test their stuff, when 99% of the games that come out are hardly any different visually than anything on a console.

They are fighting for frames per second and 1080p crap when they play on a 19 inch monitor where 1080p is IDENTICAL to 720p.

its becoming sad really

but what can you do when you feel like you built your own rig and think youre smarter than the average gamer as if going to newegg is rocket science.

GrizzliS1987 says:

"They are fighting for frames per second and 1080p crap when they play on a 19 inch monitor where 1080p is IDENTICAL to 720p."

Fighting for FPS at 1080P?! LOL, we are fighting for FPS's at more and twice that resolution.

and if you cant tell the difference between 1080p and 720p then either you need glasses or you are delusional.

LackTrue4K3866d ago

If there's one system that needs saving its a Wii U!

thebudgetgamer3866d ago

Saving it from selling three hundred plus million units?

4logpc3866d ago

People are really putting far too much thought into Vslves Steam Machines.

Steam Machines are in no way consoles. They are PC's with a case design to fit under your tv.

And since when did console gaming need saving....

admiralvic3866d ago

"And since when did console gaming need saving...."

This is one of those "I feel this way, which is obviously how everyone else feels." No different than the guy who said that CoD is dead (would that mean GTA V is the only alive game?), the person saying Black Flag might revitalize the AC series and now this. Consoles don't need to be interesting, games do. Specs might not say much, but they give developers the chance to make bigger games, flashier levels and unique experiences. This is what makes a new generation interesting. The promise of better tomorrows.

Tundra3866d ago

Lol @ console gaming needing to be "saved".

RyuCloudStrife3866d ago

Console gaming needs to be saved? Best joke I've heard in a week.

Should have happened a long time ago. People wanting refunds after 50 hours in game.

fsfsxii8d ago

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo8d ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Crows908d ago

Entirely untrue. Not any more petty than console gamers. The only large difference is console gamers don't have much of a choice.

Michiel19898d ago

Not sure why you're getting agrees. an awful lot of console gamers are overemotional twinks ready to go to war over a plastic box, I'll take being a pc gamer then.

Speaking about overgeneralizing much.

Nooderus7d ago

"X" type of gamer conversations are cringe

qalpha8d ago

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno8d ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan8d ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Inverno8d ago

Apparently early access doesn't count, only complete games with a play early preorder bonus.

Gaming4Life19818d ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.

SegaSaturn6698d ago

I never liked refunding anything. Even if a film is bad, i dont want my money back. Sometimes things just aren't for me, and it's not the creator's fault necessarily.

Gaming4Life19817d ago

I feel you and i have never walked out on a bad movie cause I payed my money. I also don't refund games cause I'm a gamer and I know what to buy lol. I think having a digital refund is great.
