Why Microsoft And The Xbox One Deserves Its Flak From Gamers

Recently, former Microsoft Exec and indie-dev Peter Molyneux stated that the backlash Microsoft got is unfair despite reversing policies for the Xbox One. While Molyneux continues on further to defend Microsoft’s vision of the future, my reason behind why the corporate giant deserves the flak that it is receiving because that Microsoft failed to focus on the core gamer audience that brought them up to where they are as well as the kind of message they sent out about the Xbox One and its gamer base. - Lazy Tech Guys

"Microsoft failed to focus on the core gamer audience that brought them up to where they are"

Pretty much what i think too. Too much focus on non gaming related content, and the gaming related content is alot of the time kinect focused, so we feel left out sometimes.

LOGICWINS3941d ago

"Too much focus on non gaming related content"

Did your electricity go out during the Microsoft conference? The only thing I saw from them was game-related content. But I suppose some people will only see what they want to see.

GarrusVakarian3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

Did you not see the February conference? It was 10 percent games and 90 percent everything else.

Either way, the fact they opened a conference with tv tells you alot about a company that used to be so dedicated to the core gamer. Right out of the gate they should have showed a game, not tv.

I'll get an Xbox One, for one thing only...gaming.

Thatguy-3103941d ago

They finally show a lot of games in one conference and all of a sudden they change. Let's remember how dry they were when it came to games the past few years. Let's see if they blew out all their load at e3 or saved some for Gamescon too.

HappyTrigger3941d ago

Slick ninja editing Lukas. lol

But yes, their February conference was pretty awful.

DiRtY3941d ago

I won't get tired of repeating this:

Exclusive games MS announced at E3 (games we have not heard of before):

- Halo 5
- Sunset Overdrive
- Kinect Sports Rivals
- Dead Rising 3
- Project Spark
- Killer Instinct
- D4
- Below

Exclusive games Sony announced at E3 (games we have not heard of before):

- The Order 1886

HammadTheBeast3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

Exclusive games MS announced at their reveal that we've not heard of:

Forza 5(?)

Exclusive games Sony announced at their reveal that we've not heard of:

The Witness
Killzone Shadowfall
Knack
Infamous Second Son
Octodad
Mercenary Kings
Deep Down

In MS' case, you guys are impressed because your expectations were so low. With Sony, keep your standards high.

corvusmd3941d ago

There really isn't any reason to be mad at MS...these kids just have a HUGE false sense of entitlement and feel that MS should grovel at their feet and beg them to be customers...ironic cause Sony as a company has shown to be much more arrogant over the years...which is why they still charge 30% more for Tvs that aren't as good. Companies need to make money to stay in business, FACT...so if MS adjusts so they can do that...that's called a smart business decision. The TRUTH here is that articles like this keep popping up because PS Fanboys picked sides really really early on without getting all the facts, and now don't want to backpedal (or do a 180 as it were....side note, you can see what really bothers them, by the insults they throw out). It's all about saving their own "face" now, plain and simple...so the Anti-MS propaganda campaign is out in full force...but if you look at facts and details, and the business path that BOTH companies have taken..there really is NO reason for this EXCESSIVE anger towards MS. Just look at how "mad" they get at MS, it's obvious that there is something going on other than being mad at a system... how often do you not want to buy a product, then go out of your way to slam it all the time. How ridiculous would it look to say "damn you coke with your red can and stupid stripe, you're too sweet....Pepsi for the win, they have better ingredients and promotions"

corvusmd3941d ago

Hammad. Witness is not a PS4 exclusive, and all hints point at Deep Down not being exclusive either

n4rc3941d ago

Why wouldn't they start with the new stuff?

Its a fkn Xbox.. Think we all knew it would be based around gaming.. No need to state the obvious..

And as said.. If you want to talk games, Microsoft is leading the pack right now

DiRtY3941d ago

@Hammad

please don't make things up, it makes you look bad.

"Exclusive games MS announced at their reveal that we've not heard of:

Forza 5(?)"

No,

Forza 5
Quantum Break
Titanfall
Ryse

And the Witness is already confirmed to be on Xbox One as well. Sony just paid for timed exclusivity. Yeah, they do this, too!

Octodad is an indi game, that was released on PC 3 years ago.

Mercenary Kings is another PC indie game and an early version is up on steam if you want to play it today.

Deep Down might or might not be an exclusive.

Why don't you just accept the fact, that MS has more exclusive games coming up? is it so hard to accept?

Skips3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

LMFAO!!!! @ Dirty! XD

Sony got so much flak for showing a crap ton of indie/PSN games... lol And yet MS does the same thing. XD

Crimson Dragon = Indie/XBLA
Below = Timed exclusive/XBLA
D4 = Indie/XBLA
Lococycle = Indie/XBLA
Killer Instinct = F2P/XBLA
Project Spark = Indie/XBLA

So all that really leaves is Halo, DR3, Forza 5, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, and Titanfall (Also on PC and most likely timed)...

But don't forget, a few of those exclusives were scrapped 360 games meant to fluff up their next gen launch lineup because they probably didn't have much else. Pretty much explains why it's been a barren wasteland on the 360 for the past few years. lol

Retail PS3 exclusives for 2013:
- Sly 4
- GOW Ascension
- The Last Of Us (GOTY Condender)
- Beyond Two Souls
- Puppeteer
- Gran Turismo 6
- Until Dawn

Retail PS4 exclusives for 2013:
- Killzone SF
- Knack
- DriveClub

vs...

Retail Xbox 360 exclusives for 2013:
- GOW Judgement

Retail Xbox One exclusives for 2013:
- Ryse (Former Kinect 360 game)
- Dead Rising 3 (Former 360 game)
- Forza 5

Doesn't look so one sided when you look at how much support MS had to drop for the 360 now does it??? lol

http://www.gamepur.com/news...

^^^ But look here!!!

If all MS is gonna do at Gamescom is a short presentation and the rest of the time, hands on with what they already showed. That pretty much goes to show they blew almost their entire load at E3. lol

The_Con-Sept3941d ago

The only games that interest me out of every conference and outlet has been on PlayStation.

But when I first saw the Xbox one.... All I got from it is TV TV TV TV and football.

Then E3 comes around and it was shooter shooter shooter fighter shooter.

I'm in to shooters, but not that much. I wanted to see a game that didn't involve racing cars or shooting guns. Killer instinct isn't enough.

DiRtY3941d ago

@Skips,

I never mentioned some of the games you brought up. And you are still wrong:

- Killer Instinct is not free to play. There is one character you can play with for free. This is nothing more than a demo. It is not a typical XBLA game either.

- Project Spark is not indie. It is made by a MS first party studio. It is not a XBLA game either.

- LocoCycle is not indie. It is made by a MS first party studio.

Every game will be available for download day and date with the retail version... are those all XBLA games then?

Even if you exclude Killer Instinct and Project Spark for the bigger budget games and only care about those type of games, they still outnumber the PS4 exclusives.

- Ryse
- Forza
- Dead Rising 3
- Halo
- Sunset Overdrive
- Titanfall
- Quantum Break

vs

- Knack
- The Order
- Killzone
- Infamous
- MAYBE (and that is a big one) Deepdown
- (MAYBE Driveclub, but if you exclude Killer Instinct you have to exclude this one for the very same reasons)

So the Xbox One wins when it comes to blockbuster games. Period.

Nice try though.

HammadTheBeast3941d ago

Titanfall on PC, remove that, and Halo we have seen quite literally NOTHING of.

The trailer bit they showed had nothing to do with Halo 5 as confirmed by 343 themselves.

Or leave Titanfall and include Planet side, DCUO, blacklgh

ginsunuva3941d ago

They'll pretend like they care about core gamers for the first year then go back to casuals and kinect.

darthv723941d ago

I do agree that MS are to blame for their own flip flopping and deserve the criticism they are getting.

But, there is a point to where criticism takes a back seat and we are left with straight up mob mentality of people jumping on board for the ride not so much the cause.

Skips3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

Like I said, only because MS practically ABANDONED support for the 360 in favor of fluffing up their launch lineup...

*Cough Cough...

Nice try a trying to keep that little tidbit out though... XD

And are you serious??? If Deep Down is a huge "MAYBE" then so it Titanfall. LMFAO!!!! And are you seriously comparing Driveclub to Killer Instinct??? That's just pathetic dude. Killer Instinct is a low budgeted small XBLA game through and through while Drivelub is an actual AAA Title being made available for PS+ because that's what Sony does for PS+. -___-

If Killzone SF was the game Sony chose for PS+, are you seriously saying that shouldn't be counted as AAA??? Talk about reaching.... lol!

Anyways, considering MS isn't even having a full conference! But a small "presentation" and the rest of the time devoted for hands on with what they've already shown. It's a no brainer they practically blew almost their entire load at E3...

Sony on the other hand... XD

Sorry to hear that you missed E3... they showed a lot of games.

Do car companies tell you that you can drive a car from point A to B? Of course not, it's a car. They focus on all the bell and whistles... because that's what makes it different from all the other cars.

LOGICWINS3941d ago

I bubbled you up for intelligent.

XboxFun3941d ago

I bubbled you too Wiikid.

A lot of folks pretend just because MS showed the features of the Xbox One that somehow some way it meant that it would never play games.

I know deep down they know this is false and just use it as some sort of ammo for their own agenda.

But don't be surprised if I take your quote and apply it elsewhere.

Hicken3941d ago

Your standard car company would be more like PC: it can race(game), but it's really about the overall versatility.

Consoles are more like the luxury brands. They try to one-up each other on the things luxury car owners(gamers) want most: namely performance and build quality. BMW and Mercedes(Sony and Nintendo) reference their long histories of providing quality, while Lexus and Infinity(Microsoft) tries to appeal more to younger, newer audiences.

What MS is doing is trying to convince performance car enthusiasts that, after a few years of trying to cater to those who'd buy minivans, they're once again dedication to high-quality luxury driving machines.

I mean but folks are cheering and applauding sony's new MS announcement of the pay tv deal with viacomm. So while im not saying some of it wasnt warranted because it was, its turned into an outright withchunt and EVIL EVIL MS schpeel that frankly is pathetic. People are living in some alternate reality where they think sony is this great company out to please all consumers and not make money. For example the headset thing, people reamed MS for not including a headset in the box originally and they did so citing its the more expensive system. How short are our memories because last gen sony did the exact same thing, the more expensive console and didnt include a headset. There a difference between giving flak and being a fanboy and most of the noise is from fanboys. im getting both so have no dog in the race but seeing folks so naive to reality has me shaking my head

Thatguy-3103941d ago

Sony was the under dog which everyone loves. They'll be back to the ps1,ps2 domination.

GarrusVakarian3941d ago

Bringing out boat loads of quality exclusives year after year makes you an underdog? Lol,ok.

Hercules1893941d ago

Did I see a different E3 than everyone else. Microsoft not only has sequels coming on launch but also has a bunch of new ips too, which are actually coming shortly after launch, unlike alot of games that might not come until 2015.

GarrusVakarian3941d ago

@Dirty

Its all good listing those games, but lets take this gen as an example, Sony hands down made the best exclusives, the fact that are still pumping exclusives out at the end of a generation (The Last Of Us and Beyond Two Souls) shows how gamer focused they are.

Lets face it, alot of those games you mentioned are garbage, you just listed those games to fill the list. Come this time at the end of next gen and i guarantee PS4 will have the better exclusives overall.

3-4-53941d ago

* Microsoft wouldn't have $500 million to invest in the XB1, if it wasn't for Xbox Original & Xbox 360 sales.

* Since 2007, they've gone away from core gaming and into casual and we the gamers have noticed this.

* Original Xbox had a ton of good games that you couldn't play anywhere else and had unique cool multiplayer styles:

* Blood Wake

* Deathrow

* Fusion Frenzy 1

* Crimson Skies

Some of the most fun I've ever had playing multiplayer games was playing those I just listed.

Nothing has come even close to these games in terms of creativeness and pure fun.

They've gone away from these unique type of games and gone more towards the casual games that people will play a lot for a month and drop.

Yes microsoft should of modified their check in so it didn't occur everyday, however microsoft should of stayed with the rest of their decisions. It would of left season passes and resale to game publishers, it wouldn't of stopped used game sale, but it would stop dev's and publishers claiming they were being robbed or short changed. This would then still allow the sharing of a digital library in a house hold instead of requiring people to carry games where ever they go.

theWB273941d ago

While I applaud the article for not going all out mental on the X1...I still find it funny how shortsighted the gaming community is. Why, in 2013 when most devices are more than their main target, do gamers expect consoles to do nothing but game. Why don't they look at this on the business side of things.

There is no way to make a gaming only console, and only appeal to gamers and expect to be successful. More time was spent watching movies on the PS3 than actually gaming. 46%(games)54%(movies) I wish we knew how many of those(54%) people only bought the console mainly for media and only played a few titles here and there.

Then people keep talking about the reveal. Did the internet only work for a select amount of people? They explicitly stated, before the May reveal, that they would have two events. The first was to introduce the CONSOLE and what it does. Then E3 show nothing but games. They did exactly that and people complained.

Exclusives. I maintain quality over quantity. Sony can release triple the exclusives as Microsoft...but if they aren't all up to snuff then what's the point? It's funny the Sony camp brags about the amount of exclusives, yet the Microsoft camp supports their few more. How is it that Xbox exclusives outsold Sony's this whole gen??

Anyway...I was supporting Xbox from day one. The system is only getting better...can't wait.

iamnsuperman3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

"do gamers expect consoles to do nothing but game"

It isn't about that though. Both these companies are catering to us at launch. We are the ones who will go out and buy it at launch. So everything should be focused on gaming. That doesn't mean don't have said features but don't make it the first thing you unveil. Rookie error. It sets a precedents to what a company feels is the most important thing.

"Exclusives. I maintain quality over quantity. Sony can release triple the exclusives as Microsoft...but if they aren't all up to snuff then what's the point? I feel this doesn't need an answer. Just think about for more than two seconds. The answer will come to you

theWB273941d ago

The answer hasn't come to me. More consoles sold worldwide, more exclusives...less sales. What am I missing?

This isn't a sprint. It's a marathon. I thought we learned that from this past gen. When you advertise a product...say what it does. They focused an entire E3 on nothing but games...how is that not a focus? Why is it so hard for people to comprehend when you reveal a product, you reveal what it does. They revealed the X1, and showed us what the entirety of it does and still got to see games games games.

LordNikon3941d ago

"The answer hasn't come to me. More consoles sold worldwide,
more exclusives...less sales. What am I missing?"

Sales doesn't tell you everything about a products quality. You can't seriously be this ignorant...

Also, quantity doesn't automatically mean that there's a loss in quality. And just because MS had less exclusives this gen, doesn't AUTOMATICALLY (again) mean that its a product of a quality. Whatever, this is all subjective anyway.

"This isn't a sprint. It's a marathon. I thought we learned that from
this past gen. When you advertise a product...say what it does.
They focused an entire E3 on nothing but games...how is that not
a focus? Why is it so hard for people to comprehend when you
reveal a product, you reveal what it does. They revealed the X1,
and showed us what the entirety of it does and still got to see

And MS's opening into this marathon was a complete disastor. It hurt the Xbox one. That is the reality... no matter how you try to spin it.

iceman063940d ago

@theWB27...here let me help you. If there are not many games to buy, then generally you buy what is available. Hence, the games that are available sell better. Contrast this with availability of several games which leads to choices and sales being spread out amongst what is available.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies5d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX6d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody6d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

rob-GP2d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic "They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo..."

lol, you mean:

NES, SNES
GameBoy, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Colour, GameBoy SP
DS, DSi, DSXL
3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL
Wii, Wii U
Switch, Switch OLED

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_6d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga6d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie4d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly6d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga6d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit5d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_6d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21836d ago (Edited 6d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies6d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead10d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan10d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in
