Xbox One to offer free 'unlimited hard drive space' via the Cloud

Some more positive news has come out of the first ever PAX Australia this past weekend. During it, some key features have been revealed regarding the Xbox One. Aside from the usual "3X's the computing power" offered by the Cloud service speech, the people at Microsoft have now stated that the cloud essentially gives you an "unlimited sized" hard drive...

That's great news to the people that are getting the Xbox One

Snookies123938d ago

Yeah, I gotta hand it to 'em. That's a wonderful feature. :]

JokesOnYou3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

According to Microsoft's public relation's, the Xbox One will offer this service for all Xbox Live members, negating the necessity of an Xbox Live Gold account to utilize the service as it stands currently:

“Xbox Live offers Xbox One unlimited storage space in the cloud for all Xbox Live members to store numerous types of Xbox Live content, including your profile, games, Achievements and entertainment. This content is stored and saved in the cloud so you can automatically access it anywhere, anytime, no matter where you are."

-Keep it coming micro, keep it coming.

thechosenone3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Yeah really nice... and after being the biggest d**ks ever with all the DRM/24hr check/no used games, unlimited storage is a really, nice, feature...

JackBNimble3937d ago

Ya, you guys better get excited by this because xbots are going to need all the HDD space they can get since they will never be able to up grade their HDD ever.

Dir_en_grey3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

*face palm at people who easily get tricked into MS's simple marketing spin

This is no different then what's available on PS3 and 360 now.
Profile and achievements data are so simply small it will take up barely any storage space; "storing your games so you can download anywhere" is just being able to download from their existing store after a simple purchase history check.

Seriously guys? You are gonna get tricked into thinking some amazing new thing happened just because they used some words like "unlimited" and "cloud" to an existing and very simplistic service that is already standard everywhere???

Stop and THINK FIRST and stop getting tricked by every little marketing scheme already.

Avernus3937d ago

I don't usually comment on fanboy bait articles, but...

@ Dir_en_grey

You do have a point, a very valid one too. People will disagree, but it's true what you say.

Not hating on xbox cuz i'm getting a PS4, but MS is kinda fooling people with this. Anywho, doesn't matter to me personally.

FamilyGuy3937d ago

Lots of (Professor Fransworth voice) "good news!" coming from the X1 camp recently. I just don't get why they wouldn't have mentioned these things sooner like at their one of their 2 recent press conferences.

Still, good news is good news and given that they're saying this now it's pretty obvious that they'll have even better news to announce at GameCon.

Still buying a PS4 but this sort of stuff is how competition improves systems. Sony will try to do something to match or compete with these recent X1 features.

3937d ago
dedicatedtogamers3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Just to clarify, how is this different than what is currently offered by the 360? Honest question.

After reading the article again, what is different than how things currently are? Your saves, profile, Achievements, and digital media are already "available anywhere, anytime, no matter where you are" because - correct me if I'm wrong - you can simply sign in to any 360 with your profile and start downloading.

Feel free to click "Disagree" all you want but before you start spewing at me, it's a legit question.

awesomeperson3937d ago

@dedicatedtogamers

I want to know exactly that as well.

The quote is ability to store "your profile, games, Achievements and entertainment".

Profile and achievements is a given - that already happens for all members on whatever system. That info is stored on a server, and always will be.

By games and entertainment, I assume they just mean the licenses to download them? Or the ability to stream movies/music if you buy from a MS related service. Correct me if I'm misunderstanding this.
Once again, that's a given.

I'm assuming this will also include game saves, in which case the unlimited storage would be the only nice part of this announcement.

If MS stated you can actually upload "unlimited" amounts of your own content - this would be something special.

But before that happens, I wouldn't get my hopes up that this is anything more than what would be expected of the system.

nix3937d ago

hope that means you can upload all the movies, music and photos you have on your hard drive, windows phones and pc/tabs etc.

3937d ago
nukeitall3937d ago

This is actually better than Sony, because on Playstation, you have to be PS+ member to enjoy cloud saves and it is limited to 1GB.

On the Xbox One it is now unlimited for all members, including non-gold XBOX LIVE members!

MS is on a roll with good news this past week.

Murad3937d ago

Totally agree with you. Even though I'm not buying anything Microsoft related I do find that Microsoft actually spending cash on their fans to be shockingly pleasant. However, I personally cannot see what I would do with all this space.

gaffyh3937d ago

Free cloud saves is the only thing new here, but that is a good feature. PS should have this feature, but it needs to be instant, like on iOS devices, where you can continue a game on a different device by logging in. PS+ save uploads are a bit annoying at the moment, although as the PS4 has a low power chip, this auto-upload might work better than on PS3.

CerebralAssassin3937d ago

@Dir above me

Who's getting tricked with their wording? This isnt anything new but it is just being confirmed it will be there for xbone. It was limited one the 360 and you need pn+ to have it on ps3. Which it still had a limit. How about you stop being that guy on the street corner on a soap box preaching how we need to atone for our sins and let it be.

n4rc3937d ago

It isnt a big deal.. They didn't hold some press conference to announce it, it was mentioned to a reporter at an event..

It is the same as currently.. Only now without the 512mb cap..

Its not huge news.. But how the Sony faithful try to spin it as bad news is utterly pathetic.

andrewsqual3937d ago

@Dir_en_grey Lol that is exactly what I was thinking. I mean there is no limit on my Download list on my PS3 so technically it is all there on the Cloud. On 360 you can't freely copy over mp3 or video files to the console so it more than likely won't store any of that stuff.
@JokesOnYou Saved games is the only thing that they should have mentioned that makes any sense.

hazardman3937d ago

@Der en grey and Avernus

Well seeing as you only get 512mb cloud space on xbox 360 id say unlimited space on xbox one cloud is a big deal.

YNWA963937d ago Show
ChiaPet3937d ago

@Der_En_Grey

I think you are the one who needs to think first. If you actually read the quote on the link to the article the rep says that "games" can be saved on the cloud not just "game data". Also the current storage cap for xbox 360 is 512mb which is no where near enough to save a game. If you disagree you disagree with the facts.

AngryTypingGuy3937d ago

I'm still getting PS4 first, but XB1 is looking better and better! Isn't competition great?! Both systems are going to kick ass!

TheHybrid3937d ago

@JackBNimble, MS has already confirmed that you can use and PC external HD for all of the same purposes as the included HD. This is a win for consumers since PC hard drives are WAY Cheaper and way bigger than console hard drives

levian3937d ago

Wow, this is an amazing feature, good on them for coming up with a good use for it!

Although, I have my reservations about how well it will work. If you have an entire game installed to your HDD it runs faster than off the disk. But if your game is installed to your "cloud HDD", it will depend on your bandwidth.

Can the fastest internet service match the speeds of an actual HDD, or even a bluray drive?

xxLuckyStrike3937d ago

Uhh huh Right..Sony fanboys dont care an yet they "continue" 24hr Xbox troll_watch with eyes of fire

fr0sty3937d ago

So... we already had cloud game saves. Now we can store our games online. Aren't they already stored online? What's the difference from uploading your game "to the cloud" vs. just re-downloading it from the store? If you've already bought the game, it should work the same either way. I know PSN has a download list you can look at to see everything you've ever downloaded from the store, so I'm not seeing the advantage of using cloud storage for game storage at this point.

If it lets you just upload any file you want, that's cool.

3937d ago
chuckyj13937d ago

@JackBNimble

are you dumb or just retarded? Can't upgrade the HDD? All you have to do is connect ANY 3.0 USB external HDD up and your done. No size limit restrictions. All I have to do is buy a WD mypassport 2TB HDD and 2.5TB will be all I need.

abzdine3937d ago

another way to lure and bring in all the sheep they can :)
PS4 is still and will always be the way to go for gamers.

trouble_bubble3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

@nukeitall
Comparing current PS3 cloud storage to future XOne cloud storage?? Nice spin attempt. Why not compare -current- PS3 to -current- 360? Proclaiming 'betters' when since Sony hasn't even announced their PS4 cloud storage parameters yet seems disingenuous.

As of today, 360 cloud storage is 512MB, requires XBL Gold, and many saves remain blocked by DRM and cannot be copied regardless. Try copying your Forza Horizon main save. You can't. PS Plus on the other hand offers more space --1GB-- and circumvents ALL DRM. Every save can be copied.

More appropriate woulda been to say XOne cloud storage > X360 cloud storage and leave the PS3 out of it.

Kryptix3937d ago

This feature can only work out if you can stream the content you own from your cloud. Otherwise it's kinda useless since saves only take some megabytes of space and gamer profiles are easily downloaded with one sign in. But you know what's funny, if you can stream games from your cloud and people utilize that, doesn't that go back to an always-online console? The option is there, you don't need to use it but Microsoft's answer to limiting the Xbox One's HDD making it unremovable is to go online and use the cloud. That's cool, but on the PS4 you can add any size of storage and you don't need to be online to access it. This news is great for people that have a reliable internet connection but people without it or don't have a good connection are still left out with limited space.

3937d ago
georgeenoob3937d ago

Wow you guys are ignorant. Re-read the title of this article, does Xbox 360's cloud storage offer unlimited hard drive space? No. That's what's different. In fact, it can only use 512MB max. Huge improvement.

The_Con-Sept3936d ago (Edited 3936d ago )

Yay another non gaming related feature. It's a storage device that works with Microsoft content!

Edit: on PS3 currently we are able to export game data, game cores, game saves, game related media, and even profile data on any available external medium such as hard drives, soft drives(clouds), solid state drives, and flash drives.

Instead Microsoft ties in your account to a single cloud. Why is it bad to have information stored on just one device?

What happened when the WTC building 1 and 2 were hit? Millions of people suddenly had lost wages. No pay checks for almost 3 months. That was an extreme case and I hate to bring it up but seriously..... Think about it for a second. If you had millions of any 1 item would you keep them all in one place or several?

I choose to keep my treasures in several places. If one gets hit then I have the rest to keep.

"Free", not "free with Xbox Live Gold"

It's good that Microsoft clarified this.

AngelicIceDiamond3937d ago

Yeah its under the gold of subscription of course.

This is crazy good news.

JokesOnYou3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

AngelicIceDiamond, nah unless I missed something its free to ALL xbox live members, that's pretty sweet news for X1 owners. 500GB is a lot most will never fill but for any of the hardcore out there that have a lot of content its pretty awesome to know you never need to pay for getting another HDD. My question is why don't they save good news like this for Gamescon?...or do they have something even better up their sleeves?

JackBNimble3937d ago

JOY
I hope 500gb is enough for you , because you have no options to up grade.
just saying,

It ain't enough for me this gen I can tell you that.

creatchee3937d ago

@JackBNimble

External hard drives are supported and they don't have to be proprietary or anything.

We've been over this before.

forcefullpower3937d ago

Actually The external drive can only be used for your own content not content downloaded from live or other Microsoft services. Get your facts right first before you say anything.

Heartnet3937d ago

@forceful power

if its anything like Usb sticks and 360 / ps3 u have an option to make it into a usb stick just for 360 stuff ergo increasing the size of ur harddrrive.. i assume this is also works with external usb harddrives

n4rc3937d ago

And actually.. You can save whatever data you want on a external HDD..

All my borderlands 2 data is on a flash drive.. I must be a witch to have made that happen.. Lol

Its cute when Sony fans try to pretend they know Xbox policies

Kryptix3937d ago

http://mashable.com/2013/01...

It is true, you can use USB drives to save data on it but you all fail to realize is that USB drives are way more expensive than hard drives. A 512 gig USB drive will run you $1,750 (check the link) but a 1 TB hard drive can run you less than $200. And if you disagree then you're clearly in denial because I just linked proof that not being able to switch out the HDD is a problem unless you're rich. But I rather buy a high end PC built for gaming with that money. ;)

Good shit for Micro and the Xbox fans. Good times ahead for both sides. Now it looks like to have both is the best outcome.

torchic3937d ago

the effects of JLG on Xbox One will not be felt until maybe a year into her tenure.

this is still the work of Mattrick, Mehdi and all other people of the original team. it was obviously part of the plan from the beginning, since Xbox One is "supercharged" by the cloud.

PimpDaddy3937d ago

Give it a rest already. You're better than that...

ALLWRONG3937d ago

Been too much good news for MS lately. Sony guys and even admins in massive damage control mode.

DragonKnight3937d ago

@PimpDaddy: I'm just saying, when's the last time there WASN'T a catch? Come on, think about it for a second now. Unlimited Free Space. Unlimited. You're telling me there isn't a huge alarm going off in the back of your mind somewhere saying "Ok, what's going on here... this sounds good but I'm not that naive?"

@ALLWRONG: If you think that flip flopping is good news, all the power to you, but everything Microsoft has said recently should have been their stance from the beginning. And that's especially true if you believe that Sony has followed the 360's launch business model.

Reverent3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

I understand why one should be weary of Microsoft's actions, but ever since they removed DRM, they've been being nothing but positive with their decisions. Can't we just accept that Microsoft may just be turning a new leaf?

And this is coming from someone who by far prefers Sony.

DragonKnight3937d ago

@Reverent: Sure, it'd be the reasonable thing to do to believe that MS is turning over a new leaf. I mean lately they've FINALLY decided to listen to what everyone was yelling at them (minus the mandatory Kinect of course) about so good on them and on those who were waiting for that.

But we've seen that MS will flip flop on anything now, so unconditional optimism carries with it the great risk of incredible disappointment. That's all I'm saying.

creatchee3937d ago

@Reverent

"I understand why one should be weary of Microsoft's actions, but ever since they removed DRM, they've been being nothing but positive with their decisions. Can't we just accept that Microsoft may just be turning a new leaf?"

Most people can. Hardcore Sony fanboys can't. It goes against their nature.

pompombrum3937d ago

Lol 28 disagrees.. it's amazing how fast the agree/disagree machines come out to play on positive Microsoft articles.

DragonKnight is right though.. whenever any company throws around words like "free unlimited" people should be skeptical as there is usually a catch.

CrossingEden3937d ago

"Microsoft has said recently should have been their stance from the beginning"
going by your logic every gamer ever should cancel their pre-order for every console because Sony does not have a perfect track record in the slightest

DragonKnight3937d ago

@CrossingEden: Your comment literally made absolutely no sense. And I mean at all. People across all spectrums will look at your comment and be eternally perplexed at how you could so thoroughly and completely miss the point.

This isn't about which company has a "perfect track record." This is about common sense. There is a legitimate case to be made that Sony has taken what they feel worked for the 360 at its launch, and applied it to the PS4 with their own style. Given that Microsoft got the 360 launch right (we can argue about later years some other time) for the most part, it should stand to reason that Microsoft shouldn't have put themselves in the position they are in right now of having to reverse virtually every single policy they've come up with with the Xbox One and be seen in such a terrible PR light.

The same could have been said about Sony with the PS2 vs. the PS3 except Sony didn't try to take user rights away, or force a hardware feature that would have bricked the console, etc..

None of the Big 3 have a perfect track record, for the record.

3937d ago
vega2753937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

@ dragonknight

What your saying makes no sense and also makes you a hypocrite. If your saying sony took what MS did last gen with the 360's launch and applied it to the launch of the ps4. The ps3 had a rought start as the X1 is now. So you trust everything sony tells you because they changed their ways after their arrogant attitutes and mistakes with the ps3. Yet you want to us to never forgive MS for trying something that didnt go well with gamers and fixed it based on negative feedback. Yeah ok

I for one have no problem with a company trying to repair the damage it did to itself and I'm not going to hate one company and give the other a free pass as you and many sonyfans have. Like you said its not about a perfect track record. But what a company has learned and will change to please their fans.

Your ptoblem is no matter what MS does you hate and thinks something is behind it yet sony does something and it was sent from god. Sony has done a lot to change their image and MS is doing the same and I for one like what they have been doing as of late. Which has insured my decision on getting the X1.

trafalger3937d ago

"That's all I'm saying."

all your really saying is you dont like m$ and love sony and anything positive about the xbone you want to squash it right away. i bet you have no interest in the system and just want to make it look as bad as possible because you want the ps4 to kill it.

Can't wait to see how Sony counter-attacks and how Microsoft responds to Sony's counter-attack. Let the games begin!

3937d ago
Kayant3937d ago

Like Dir_en_grey and awesomepeople have pointed out that's how it's going to work. The have not said they will allow you to upload stuff to the cloud. That would be insane and stupid because of piracy and the fact they already have a cloud storage service (Skydrive) that charges for storage it could cannibalize some of the sales from that. But still this is a nice feature that is not behind a paywall like usual.

Gamer19823937d ago

Its great but its only confirmed its "unlimited" for save games so far. I mean looking at my PS3 save and how much I amassed over the 8 years of playing I hit about 200mb.. So unlimited doesn't really stand out that much.. Doesn't say unlimited storage for video uploading etc as they don't host them themselves.

SaturdayNightBeaver3937d ago

Haha well said, and what exactly they gonna put into those drives? What games? Im really curious. :)

kewlkat0073937d ago

The benefits..of the Xbox One are becoming realized...

Not just the Xbox One but the whole XBL Infrastructure....which was already good.

Microsoft has invested heavily in technologies and other services which they are blending in the XboxOne console's future/infrastructure.

Just proves the Xbox One console will be be around for a while...

Well you can probably say anyone can come up with a cloud architecture of their own at some point but will it be as good, efficient, and cheap? There is a huge cost associated with server infrastructures and data warehousing. If MS is footing the bill, then I'm down with that.

GraveLord3937d ago

Wonder how ms is going to handle the backlash from all the companies they currently charge to use their cloud, for storage.
Seriously go to Microsoft's web site and search the topic companies pay them now they are giving gamers unlimited space, which is cool for gamers but that's potentially a lot of space if Xbox1 sells well and people choose to use the feature it could amount to a very large amount of data storage given to the xbl community that ms is trying to sell to other corporations.

RM-TatoTiburon3937d ago

the funny thing is all the fanboys were excited when sony confirmed that we can play all our games in diferent consoles, a feature available in ps3/xbox360, but they are trying to bash this with the same"this is old"

What happens when cloud stops working one day or when it goes bankrupt.

Seriously, lets say they go bankrupt and go out of business. Then what ? There goes all your games ?

What about when the XB2 is released in 2020, what happens to all the games ? Can we transfer them ?

I'm glad they are doing it but I don't think any of these companies have a fool proof plan or even a good back up plan in case something fails.

All it takes is losing Millions of players games and data via Hard Drives and the trust for them is over.

I'm hoping everything works out for the best though.

scott1823937d ago

That's a fantastic feature, that is something everyone needs! especially since everything's going digital.

Eddie201013937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Still have to download your games (several gigs and several hours to download) from the cloud in order play them so the game will still take up space on your physical hard drive.

It's Just like buying a game from PSN or Xbox Live and being able to erase the from your hard drive and if later you want to play it you can re download it from the store because you own it. The games aren't actually stored in a space with your name on it, it's just that your account will say you own it and are allowed to re download it from a single space on Microsofts's servers.

Unlimited game saves and achievements and account information take up very little space to begin with so saying you have unlimited space for those things isn't a huge thing really. PS4 will have the same thing as far as the things mentioned above go.

Why do people fall all over themselves every time Microsoft say cloud this or cloud that.

Cloud oh Cloud, where cherubs are singing my name.

You can make a copy of that sucker to the cloud on xbox 360, even the PS3 I believe.

Or just take any USB drive and copy it over to that. Now you have 3 copys with no chance of having them all go down.

PS: I just had my HD crash on my 360 a month ago. Lost 300+ hour skyrim, 200+ Fallout 3, 200+ Fallout NV, 200+ Mass Effect 1-3, and 2 50+ Borderlands 2 charicters. Its been rough trying to level back up in borderlands, Skyrim is next. ALWAYS BACKUP TO THE CLOUD!

ABeastNamedTariq3937d ago

You make me cry man, you make me cry. I could never be sane after losing that much progress. I would trade in my console I swear (I'd regret it later, but I'd do it haha). I actually do everything you describe, and now I feel compelled to buy another USB drive and do some complicated stuff to duplicate my save file to a Swiss game account lol.

Insomnia_843937d ago

It doesn't back up automatically like on PSN? Xbox Live? Really???? The almighty Xbox Live?? Huh!

mwjw6963937d ago

@Insomnia_84

Thank you troll for your useless comment about a feature you don't understand. Back under your bridge now.

Yes it does auto backup once you enable it. I had it turned off because i thought I would never use it. Man was I wrong.

Bigpappy3937d ago

This is a really good feature for those who have friends and Family members who also have X1. You can go visit, log into their X1 and just continue from where you left off. Anywhere you go and there is an X1, you can continue where you left off.

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot9h ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware7309h ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto9h ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay9h ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus239h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv728h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

-Foxtrot8h ago

Guys I’m not being all that serious…relax

Outside_ofthe_Box7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

"I don't think anything will minimize this impact."

It already has. Notice your comment(or lack there of) vs HD2.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Zeref5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it works. Same thing with layoffs. All of a sudden everyone has layoffs around the same time

Cacabunga4h ago

MS will always make it to amaze me by showing the worse version of themselves every single time..

peppeaccardo4h ago

MS proving to the world that ttheir leadership cannot drive success from these new acquisitions. They have ran the numbers and they have realized that long term, without a clear direction from the motehrship, these are a loss for the company hence they need to be cut. I might be wrong but I am absolutelly sure that if these developers would have not been purchased by Microsoft they would be still on business. A shame ...

Einhander19729h ago(Edited 9h ago)

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner9h ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion8h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf29h ago(Edited 9h ago)

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman8h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

TiredGamer2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

This. ^

Publishers are slowly mitigating all development risk since every new big/medium budget game has become too big to fail. Games are too expensive to make and the profitability for titles rests on a hair’s edge. When you need to sell 5 million copies of a game to be profitable, you know that we’ve turned a new page in gaming. The real victims here are the smaller studios/games that bring so much character and variety to the industry, like with Hi-Fi Rush.

It looks to me that Hi-Fi Rush did not fulfill financial expectations for moving the GamePass needle, and the sales from the PlayStation port experiment did not measure up either. So it gets the boot.

Sad day and era for gaming.

notachance8h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff21838h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

TiredGamer2h ago

Didn’t move the GamePass needle and the PlayStation port couldn’t save the return on investment….

dumahim8h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic18817h ago(Edited 7h ago)

From Aaron Greenburg:

"Hi-Fi RUSH was a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations. We couldn’t be happier with what the team at Tango Gameworks delivered with this surprise release."

😂😂😂 🤥🤥

Lightning776h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Once again MS creates their own problems and they create their own animosity. Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. Pretty nobody will be on MS dude no matter if they (if they ever but I doubt it) get their act together.

Trashy ass ppl and company....

If they go under eventual it's because of their own doing nobody else's.

porkChop4h ago

Yeah overall this gen is pretty shit. Everyone is making horrible decisions, great devs are getting either gutted or entirely shut down regardless of quality or success, very little in the way of innovative games, etc. This industry needs to see some drastic changes.

Tango Gameworks and Arkane?

RaidenBlack9h ago

Arkane Austin (Prey developer)
Not Arkane Lyon ( Dishonored developer)

Crows908h ago

Prey was fantastic. Red fall was shit because they were forced to do shit they didn't want to make.

Atkane Lyon did death loop I believe....I hated that one.

shinoff21838h ago

RaidenBlack7h ago

@shinoff2183

Other than the live service Redfall, all other single-player Arkane projects have been creative and interesting

Will be more soon, I've said it before I can't see MS keeping Bethesda. I think they'll strip it's IPs and slowly close everything, it's what they do.

VariantAEC7h ago

No one wants to admit it, but yeah MS has a long history of pillaging other smaller corporations for IP and dispensing with everything else.

Zeref5h ago

That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?

MrDead4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

@Zeref
"That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?"

MS don't care about the studios, they want the IP's. They'll keep the big ones in house, the game engines they run on and licence the rest. Stacks of cash to be made from licensing IP's ...or just sit on them so no one else can use them.

blackblades2h ago

@Zeref silly fool, buy them for the IP have there other studios make the games using the IP names to sell them. We all know having a popular franchise name can sell

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos8h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC7h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast6h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff21838h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander19728h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

8h ago
Relientk779h ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19729h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus239h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama8h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows908h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff21838h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC7h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda6h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay5h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

CrashMania9h ago

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff21838h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack9h ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia8h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff21838h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

RpgSama8h ago

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger9h ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder9h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania9h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus238h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander19728h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal8h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead8h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows8h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff21838h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman8h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares7d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka7d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion7d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer7d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow16d ago (Edited 6d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer6d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
