5 Things in Video Games That You Never Used To Pay For

Gamers today are odd creatures, the kind of people who can rage about the cost of DLC one moment, and the next minute new DLC releases for their favorite game it’s “OH! Three new costumes for this one character for the low-low price of $15?! TAKE MY MONEY!” This specific behavior got me thinking about how I spend money on games. Has the amount I spend changed over the years? Has the price of certain things gone up? What’s different about buying games in today’s market versus buying games in the yester-years of the last generation of home consoles?

The industry has become incredibly greedy, i mean Activsion increased the price of their map packs to 1200msp i think and you get 3 new maps and a remade map from the last game lol its a complete joke.

One of the street fighters a few years back also had locked DLC on the disk which they expected the user to then buy 2/3 months later.

Much less. I used to be perfectly fine paying 50-60 bucks for a game.

However, I do want a COMPLETE game. And nowadays, with so many developers already bragging about how they'll be DLC-milking their game straight after release, that just automatically means: "Too bad.... maybe I'll pick it up a year or so from now, if they bother to release a complete edition, if I'm still interested by then."

So most of the games I bought this gen have come from the bargain-bin, often getting a GOTY/Ultimate/Complete/Whateve r Edition for 20 bucks or something. And many of those games I would have been willing to pay 50-60 bucks for, IF they would have just announced free DLC from the get-go, or just a complete game to begin with and nothing else.

Now, some will argue developers need to make a few extra bucks to make up for 2nd hand sales.

Well, if you want to combat 2nd hand sales, wouldn't it make a lot more sense if you announce to your customers: "Hey, when you buy this game we'll keep supporting it! You can expect some cool new DLC 2-3 months from now, so hang on to your copy! It will be worth it!". Guess what, the best way to combat 2nd hand sales, is to make sure people aren't selling their game 1 week after buying it, because they completed it.

I'm right with you on waiting for complete editions/GOTY etc.. I am proud to say that I have yet to buy an online pass also, I just don't support it period.

As for DLC, most of the time I do wait for full editions like I said, but I have spent a small amount of DLC over the years. No more than 200 probably, and that's very little compared to many people that practically pay 200 for a single game with season passes, and some other extra nonsense.

Fallout 4's 'next gen' update is over 14 gigs, breaks modded saves, & doesn't change much at all

We were expecting problems with mod support, but there are a lot of other issues.

Wow what the actual hell 🤣🤣🤣

just_looken7h ago

This is why you get the GOG version on gog you can select the version of the game to download.

On pc fallout 4 fallout new vegas and skyrim are all broken on steam because they all got the same "next gen" update.

Skyrim dec 2023
https://www.pcgamer.com/sky...

Can not find new vegas but anyone that modded it knows the script extender there was also broken

Valkyrye6h ago

Not accidental, they want modders to stop modding their older games to force them to mod Shitfield.

just_looken4h ago

There doing the same on starfield with a mods store and blocking mods

There goal is like blizzard and what they did with fallout 76 you make mods they can sell and you become a slave.

On skyrim they have "trusted" mod devs now basically a badge that lets your mod on the store you get a crumb of the sale when someone buys it.

lol to the disagrees, the last Skyrim update broke mods too. They've been trying to kill mods to monetize them in creation club for years, it's not a stretch that they purposely put out patches just to break free mods.

porkChop1h ago

The disagrees are from people who have common sense. They aren't trying to kill mods. Most mods for any game will break with a new update because they rely on files/code that have been changed. This isn't new. Even with Bethesda this would happen way before the creation club. Mod support is literally one of the things that got Bethesda to where they are, and they're one of the only devs that releases comprehensive mod tools for each of their games.

Over 14 GBs and doesn't change much at all? What? Taking up that much drive space for a pathetic 'remastering' is shameful.

Par for Bethesda.

Aussiesummer1h ago

It's not a remaster, it's a next gen update.

badz14950m ago

LOL people are actually expecting massive improvements or something? From Bethesda?? the same people who released Skyrim multiple times and the all look like shit? THAT Bethesda? are people for real?

Profchaos17m ago(Edited 15m ago)

The ps5 version doesn't change a ton but from my small playtime it's enough to make me want to replay it just to have it running at 60.

A side note to this my PS4 version no longer boots after it's "update" so I guess that's what it feels like to own a Bethesda game on PC

Hopefully Microsoft will go back to the original story line and get away from that woke nonsense from the last Gears game Gears of Woke! But were talking about Microsoft so all the betting money is on more of the same woke nonsense.

The Locust trilogy concluded with Gears of War 3. I don’t get how Gears 4 and 5 are “woke” .
