Microsoft Studios' creative director defends always-online Xbox 720

StickSkills said, "Rumors of what Microsoft’s next-generation console will look, sound and play like have been swirling for months now, but the possible feature that’s elicited the most discussion has been its always-online nature. The gaming community has been clearly upset over the yet-to-be-seen future of the Xbox, and Microsoft Studios’ Creative Director Adam Orth has heard just about enough of it all."

Hate to say I told you so. And he's being a real douche about it too. WOW. What. A. Jerk.

(lmao at the disagrees I already have. You people aren't seriously defending this guy, are you? You can't be that complacent).

GamersRulz4056d ago

That s#@t is becoming real...good luck xbox guys!

Skips4056d ago (Edited 4056d ago )

Yeaup...

This damage control from Microsoft pretty much confirms an "Always Online, Always Connected" system. lol

Looks like whatever else Edge leaked may be right about the 720 as well.

Blocking used games, DRM? Mandatory/built in Kinect? Spying on the user? Installs and whatnot etc. etc.

Like what was said before, if Microsoft could get away with making you pay for half of a game you've already payed for, and making you pay for services you are ALREADY paying for (Netflix) blah blah blah...

Microsoft doing this doesn't seem so far fetched. : /

Seriously yo? WTF?!?!?!?! Microsoft are like the EA and Capcom of console manufacturers. lol

Skips4056d ago (Edited 4056d ago )

Whoops, double post.

fabiani4056d ago

it will cause radiation

dedicatedtogamers4056d ago

Now the "always online" has pretty much been confirmed. I just saw another article stating that the NextBox will allow for up to three minutes offline to compensate for internet outages (yeah, like outages only last 3 minutes).

Any of the Xbox defenders want to speak up now? No?

Ezz20134056d ago

is this guy for real ?! he want People to deal with it ?!

not only he sounds incredibly ignorant
but he's doing a very salty damage control for MS

people will deal with this all right...they are getting ps4

Oh_Yeah4056d ago

Microsoft is asking for hackers.

HammadTheBeast4055d ago

Oh, and vacuum cleaners are also always online.

apparently it might have been a joke

Dee_914055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

lol'd at the vacuum cleaner thing. If my electricity went out as much as my internet then I would leave india ( electricity goes out daily there)
and im guessing the other rumors are true now too.. welp no nextbox for me i guess. The new forza will be missed
That is if the rumor about not being able to PLAY unless you have online is true. ...for a minute I start to think he is being sarcastic but then again some of the stuff he said makes it seem he really thinks like that ( aside from the city thing )

SilentNegotiator4055d ago

This is starting to look pretty bad.

Information Minister4055d ago

I truly hope this is just a case of poor sense of humor, because those are some of the worst analogies that I have ever seen!

Vacuum cleaners have always needed a power grid to work and mobile phones have always needed a wireless service provider to operate, those are inevitable requirements stemming from their basic design and/or function.

But game consoles have been able to play games without an internet connection for the last 40 years. That's not going to turn into a necessary and inevitable requirement just because MS says so.

sengoku4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

...And this is why I sold my 360 and bought a PS3. This is also why I will be buying a PS4 at launch and may buy a Nextbox, 5-6 years down the road

1nsaint4055d ago

Thanks, looks like we're gonna need it.

I already have issues with my internet randomly disconnecting.. Might be a dent in the cable, a router setting or just the ISP.. All i know it pisses me of when im playing online, but it would realy piss me off it stopped a single player game from running.

If its true and it also turns out not to be Backwards compatible.. I dont think i would buy it.. I'd like to keep my game collection...

And don't say keep your 360 for your games, cause i will, but the thing is 5 years old and has trouble reading discs since the lens is all smeared up from sigarete (and weed) smoke xD

DARK WITNESS4055d ago

quick poll

how many people on here are 360 fans or you own both a 360 and ps3, who would have got the next xbox but are not buying it if this crap is true ?

Agree, you are not buying the next xbox

disagree, you are still going to buy it regardless

Personally, if this turns out to be true ( it's looking likely that it is) I am not touching it. I was a big MS supporter of MS when this gen started (although have owned a ps3 which i sold recently), I don't have much love for them right now and if this is true I won't think twice about only buying the ps4 and leaving the next xbox in the dust.

good luck ms, your going to need it..

kevnb4055d ago

its going to happen on ps4 too, they danced around the question by saying third parties would have to implement it... but I think we can all read between the lines.

Darrius Cole4055d ago

@kevnb

There is a big difference between Microsoft putting it in at the hardware/operating system level and a game developer putting it in at the software/video game/app level. If an individual game is online only or not then I lose just that one game when my internet is not there for any reason. But if I an entire console platform is online only then lose all my games when the internet goes out.

If the game developer wants to do that with his individual game then I am free to buy that game or buy an alternative depending on which I want.

If the console manufacturer puts it in at the hardware/operating system level then I have the same choice. I am free to buy that console or to buy an alternative console depending on which I want.

Perjoss4055d ago

I have a stable internet connection so always online suits me just fine!

My xbox360, PS3 and PC have never been 'offline', any time they are turned on there is an active connection to them, I don't see the big deal.

yesmynameissumo4055d ago

^^^

Millions of other people don't. I have solid Internet, but I don't want to always be connected to anything.

pixelsword4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

Dangit, Microsoft.

You had me, YOU FRIGGIN' HAD ME. You don't believe me? Look at my comment history, I was ready to give every console a chance.

I was ready to get the Next Box firstly and before the PS4 (just to make a point) because I didn't like they way they are trying to lock-out people from their older games, but you had to find a way to screw that up. What I hate more than a console that won't play the games you already purchased is a console that has to be always online to play games.

That's not only pointless power consumption, but it smacks of monitoring devices I've seen.

You doubt me?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/...

What the heck is going on with this next gen?

I don't put my console online when I play single player because I can free it up for my roommate so there will be a faster connection, not being able to do that will result in a non-purchase from not only me, but people who are in a situation like that. People who work from home rely on a fast connection and when multiple people work from home, there is no question that a console isn't worth a constant paycheck.

You just screwed yourself, Microsoft; and if Sony does the same thing, they they are on the outs as well.

JeffGUNZ4055d ago

@ dedicatedtogamers

Speak up? You mean on the system which has yet to be announced and everything you have heard is pure speculation and rumors from "anonymous sources"? Give me a break. Gamestops CEO said he is excited for the Next Gen. Xbox console, I doubt he'd be that excited if it blocked used games, you know, which is gamestops cash cow.

GamerToons4055d ago

Bang... Bang... Bang..

Do you hear that?

It's the sound of nails being hammered into the coffin.

Gamers, please... now can we just look forward to either a PS4 or a true gaming PC?

I am not buying the Next Xbox. They lost me and a lot of people.

starchild4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

I'm completely sick of rumors. I'm mostly a PC guy, but I always buy at least one console. All I want is the facts about what each next gen console will bring.

sak5004055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

Do you know 360 has privacy settings which will let you show offline to all or to all except friends so friends can only see that you're online?

On topic: Even though i've got 16mbps always online connection i wouldn't go for next box if it's a "REQUIREMENT". There goes my 74k gamer score and tons of games. Guess will stick it with 360 as long as there are games coming for it then jump ship to ps4.

DivineAssault 4055d ago

yup but theres times when i dont want to play online at all.. Dark souls for example where being online allows phantoms to interrupt you when doing a critical objective.. Its not about that though, what about when maintenance is going on & xbl is down? Or theres a network outage in your area? Then what? not play at all? No thanks.. My games wont be reliant on the internet & i wont scramble for HDD space because all my games need to be fully installed..

I guess no nextbox for me.

JeffGUNZ4055d ago

Some of the people on this site are either constant trolling status or just complete morons. There is still NOTHING that says you NEED an internet connection to use the system. This most likely sounds like the system will have better features and/or benefits if it is always connected. "Always on, Always Connected". If a rational, non-fanboy mind thinks about it, you'd come to an idea that the system will be on, even when you shut down, to a low power mode (always on) and it will do updates/maintenance for the system, games saved on HD, etc (always connected). We have not seen ANYTHING saying it won't work offline. Oh wait, we all tend to believe "anonymous sources" now, right?

JeffKaos4055d ago

I get what you're saying, I have a pretty good internet connection and for me it's definitely not a big deal but there's no argument that will convince me that always online is a good thing. Privacy issues aside one reason I don't support this is that my son will be old enough to play games in a few years and quite frankly I don't want him to be online while he plays games.

This wasn't real boys...the "argument" you are seeing are between two friends joking around.

Why would Microsoft announce this already controversial feature when everything else is under lock n key.

But by all means exploit something that was already made a farse for traffic, and then let the sony fanboys lose their minds into thinking they "won" something.

FYI - you don't win anything when you end up spending $500 in the end either way. But by all means throw your allegiance around.

irokster4055d ago

If you dont think you "win" after spending $500 on something, why would you think about buying it in the first place? I know that if I spent those $500 on a PS4, I would not be losing. Maybe gaming isnt the right hobby for you.

Ya know, I almost thought MS would read all the feedback and change there tune before the announcement.

But no, it's going to be like Windows 8 where the number one request in the beta was bring back the start button and normal Windows functionality and they didn't listen.

Microsoft refuses to give the consumer what it wants instead trying to ram what it wants you to have down your throat. (or up your rear)

Well we can all hope 720 is half as popular and Windows 8.

r1sh124055d ago

While I do fully agree always online is a very bad idea, many people are blowing this out of pespective.
This guy is part of the Microsoft studios, and he's a creative director, he has say in games and probably a small amount of influence in what goes into the nextbox.
He is not part of the entertainment division who are the ones who decide what goes in the nextbox.

I almost hope this is true so MS eats so humble pie like Sony did, and think practically. The roles are looking like they're gonna reverse this year.

LOGICWINS4056d ago (Edited 4056d ago )

Your under the assumption that this is some sort of death sentence for the 720, when it reality there are a lot of uninformed gamers that wouldn't see a problem with this.

Remember, these people think paying a yearly fee to use THEIR OWN Internet connection to play online is NORMAL. MS knows their community better than anyone. They wouldn't be stupid enough to do something like this if they didn't think people would bite.

This has been the story all generation. People online make fun of Gears for being a "dude bro" game, but in the real world the Gears franchise has sold over 20 million.

People say Halo is generic, yet in reality the franchise has sold over 50 million units.

If Microsoft decides to do it, I strongly doubt the majority of gamers would have a problem with it. Outside of the Internet, I've heard no one complaining about an always on Xbox 720.

Mikeyy4056d ago

The reality is that only 40 million 360 users have Gold accounts.

So the 720 can expect to sell... 40 million consoles.. It just alienated over HALF it's userbase.

Even If you argue they can be silver, You still have a chunck of 360 users who don't use online period.

LOGICWINS4056d ago

Just because a good chunk of 360 users don't use online doesn't mean they don't have it. Maybe they CHOOSE not to be Gold members because they aren't fans of playing online and would rather play local co-op with friends. I could name two family members of the top of my head who have Internet connections but don't hook their 360 up to it.

HammadTheBeast4055d ago

You're grasping at straws now, did they learn nothing from Sim City and Diablo? Yes, a lot of sheep will buy it, but if the PS4 does something better, that's a sale lost, and + for Sony.

LOGICWINS4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

^^Another person who lives exclusively in Internet land. Just because Plus is a better deal than XBL doesn't mean it will be the more successful service. Advertising is a major factor.

HALF of 360 owners are Gold subscribers. Not even 10% of PSN users are Plus subscribers...despite it being the better valued service.

So no, Microsoft(in reality) isn't losing Gold sales to Plus...at least not on a major quantifiable scale.

If the "better" deal was automatically the more successful one, then the Wii wouldn't have owned this gen and the Vita would be outselling the 3DS 3-1. You forget that word of mouth, brand awareness, and marketing are major factors.

How will consumers choose Plus over Gold when most don't even know what Plus is?

kreate4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

@logic

'Not even 10% of PSN users are Plus subscribers'

Where are u getting the 10% from?

Cuz when I look at my friends list, im surprised at how many psn users are plus members.

NonApplicable4055d ago

I agree somewhat. I honestly can't believe that Microsoft would risk such a large portion of their audience. At the same time, such a drastic move indicates they have a justification for requiring an internet connection.

It's ridiculous how many people are dismissing the next Xbox based on a sliver of rumor. Judge once we have the full details.

Microsoft needs to have a compelling reason for being "always online". If it's simply for piracy, the next Xbox's public perception will likely be severely crippled.

n to the b4056d ago

and in some ways understandably so

Chuk5 what do you mean?

Prophet-Gamer4055d ago

@n to the b

Sony ruled the market for two generations straight, and I believe some developers have said that during the PS2 era they were arrogant and tough to work with. Though the PS3 is still a great success and will almost definitely be their their third console to sell 100 million, I believe this gen really showed SONY they are definitely not invincible.

MikeMyers4056d ago (Edited 4056d ago )

What role is that? You know what's amazing, how often the gaming community on forums differ from the mainstream public. How many here bash Live fees (myself included)? Yet they seem to be doing ok in that area aren't they? How many here bashes Diablo III and it's online connections having to be enabled? Didn't that game sell over 13 million copies? How many people here have their PS3's, Xbox 360's and Wii U's connected online all the time? How many here use Steam and love Steam yet it too needs to be connected to get the game started?

In no way am I defending the rumors of the Xbox requiring an online connection. I hope they don't, but don't think for second that all of this riff-raff that occurs on game forums is parallel to real world purchases.

We live in a connected society now, we link our Facebook accounts with various devices, we check our e-mails and use Twitter and get news feeds to our devices all day long. Valve does extremely well and all of their content is sold digitally. Microsoft may indeed require a connection but I just don't see the new Xbox not working if the net goes down. We've seen it before with the Playstation Network for over a month, can you imagine not even being able to play offline for that long on the new Xbox? It's not going to happen that way. They may require some validation but to require a constant connection? I seriously doubt it. Not unless Microsoft wants to be open for complete failure when the connection fails.

We already seen the hoopla that happens when there are issues with Xbox Live and how unhappy customers are. If people cannot access anything that would scar Microsoft much more than the RRoD ever did.

LOGICWINS
"Outside of the Internet, I've heard no one complaining about an always on Xbox 720."

cyguration4055d ago

You don't need Steam to be online to start a game.

Comcast has been going out EVERYDAY this week off and on ALL DAY.

Guess what? I had Steam login in offline mode and I'm still able to play my games fine.

If MS lets you play your games in offline mode when you choose to, then that's one thing, but having to always be connected just to start and play your games is bullcrap and anti-consumer.

It would mean that I wouldn't have been able to play any games on Xbox 720 this week consistently with the net service constantly going out.

If MS confirms this to be true it's an easy PS4 buy for me.

MikeMyers4055d ago

cyguration,

You need to be connected to Steam to buy the game and verify through Steams service. If you buy a product outside of Steam you have to put in a code. This is a far more likely scenario with the new Xbox rather than always having to be connected just to play.

insomnium24055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

Look at Mike going the extra mile to defend Micro. Is this really the same guy who says everyone is a PS3 fanboy?

JeffGUNZ4055d ago

@ Insomnium2.

You're calling out Mike for defending MS? Give me a break. Mike has a valid point, all you sony fanboys don't. All this crap is just RUMORS from "anonymous sources" that pathetic online gaming "journalists" post so they can get hits. MS has said NOTHING about next gen. and will only do so when they want. The "defending" Mike is doing is implicating that this is highly unlikely and rumors. That's fact. These are all rumors. I'm not saying one way or the other what the nextbox will have, but I will wait till I actually hear FACTS from MS before I judge.

MikeMyers4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

JeffGUNZ,

Don't worry about it. What we have are people who choose sides and want to clash with anyone who doesn't share their pessimism. Trouble is I don't have a side. I already said before the PS4 looks great so far yet he thinks I am somehow favoring the next Xbox. Makes no sense at all but people like him aren't here for reasoning, they like the conflict.

It would be very foolish for Microsoft to have a system that requires an online connection at all times. Out of the 75 million + Xbox 360 owners less than half are even Gold members and I imagine not of all the 75 million owners are even always connected. Look at all the hoopla when the Playstation network went down for over a month and what happened with SimCity. Can you imagine the next Xbox being like that and customers not being able to access any game?

They could have a validation system. Like we see when you buy used games now and trying to access the online portions. My PS3 is on all the time. I am also a PLus member and it wouldn't be as useful if I wasn't connected all the time. But again that isn't to defend MS, it's the reality we live in today.

If this is a confirmation from a MS employee that the Nextbox will infact be always on, he should be fired. Devs and journalist are bound by the NDA, so I doubt the brass at MS are very happy with this guy running his mouth.

BitbyDeath4056d ago

He didn't confirm it, just stated it is the future and people should embrace it :-p

Root4056d ago (Edited 4056d ago )

In a small way he kind of did....I mean I see it as him trying to defend the decision early so he doesn't have to do it too much after it's actually revealed.

Calming people down before launch

M-M4055d ago

He indirectly confirmed it =P.

JeffGUNZ4055d ago

or he's being a smart a$$, or he isn't a real employee, or it's a fake account, etc...That's the thing with the internet folks, you can't believe everything you see.

GamersRulz4056d ago

Now thinking about the situation, why would anyone even invest in such a machine,

inferior specs.
less exclusives.
forced DRM.
must install disc.

Seems like xbox division are run by middle-aged business men who knows nothing about gaming, they are handing US marketshare to Sony in a silver plate, EU/JP will suffer even more because of this.

God have mercy on Xbox only gamers.

BitbyDeath4056d ago

"Seems like xbox division are run by middle-aged business men who knows nothing about gaming"

There was already a thread about that.

flyingmunky4055d ago

It will have to be a cheaper console then. No way they can have all those negatives and stay relevant otherwise.

TheDivine4055d ago (Edited 4055d ago )

If all that was true it would still be comparable to the ps4 and run the same games. Now imagine the ps4 is 450 and the 720 is 199 or maybe even 99 dollars with a. 2 year xbl sub? I think it would be a smash hit and a clear winner sales wise. I would prob even get one down the road and I hate the idea of online for consoles, steam, vita games, basically everything that requires it. My issue is if I want to play games years later would they drop the requirement? Prob not. They would prob make all games work on future system similar to how steam keeps one game library whether you upgrade to a new pc so whatever system or gen all games work, full bc.

Still my only sure bet is a WiiU. I'm not sold on any other console and the only way il pay for xbl is to get a steal on the console or if it allows free online and or offline play. I'm a 360 owner who never payed for live. I don't give half a shit for online just games. I'm thinking even if 40 million of us (people who don't pay for xbl) all skip this console MS won't even care. They make their cash on xbl so me buying a console and the dozen new games (the other dozen or two was used) doesn't really make enough cash for ms to care. They're catering to their base aka the people who pay. I don't think they care about sheer numbers and owning the living room because they carved out their market which prevents Sony dominance. Now its about revenue.

xursz4055d ago

If it's 99 dollars I will consider it for exclusives but I will not pay for Live unless they adopt a rewards model like PS+

Pintheshadows4055d ago

Imagine indeed... I think you'll need to keep on imagining as well.

sak5004055d ago

I think they picked up lot of ex-sony guys.

More Job Losses At Xbox, “There’s More To Come”: Paul Thurrott

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus2312h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos3h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb332h ago

i think you are really missing the point

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear211h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot21h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

Jon615862h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

RNTody21h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead11h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage4h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast21h ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn197920h ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel12h ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19791h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage4h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

Jin_Sakai2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

“Bond adds that they will start on the web”

This will go nowhere.

Nice knowing you Xbox. This is what happens when the house never gets cleaned.

MrDead2d ago

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Good luck with this even it might not succeed.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow2d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1821d 22h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie1d 12h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere1d 3h ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow13h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX2d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney8h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Sheppard7t31d 22h ago

How did Sony kill the series?

Inverno1d 22h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

1d 7h ago
fsfsxii1d 8h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno1d 7h ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
