Vita sales 'exploded over Christmas', claims PlayStation UK boss

Vita sales were "quite low" in the run-up to Christmas but "absolutely exploded" at the height of the festive season, according to Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Fergal Gara.

I wouldn't say they exploded per se, but that Amazon bundle definitely helped. Anyway, I find myself playing Vita more this month than last year, which is a good sign. More original software will go a long way to giving this impressive system a great shot.

jujubee884085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

I think SCE suits would know if sales went way up. It's their holiday paycheck that reflects that. XD

SilentNegotiator4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

You spent a lot of last year disregarding everything Vita did on Modojo, Chris Buffa.

Buff10444085d ago

We made a very difficult decision to cover mobile, but I've started to dip into 3DS and Vita a bit more this year.

SilentNegotiator4085d ago

I don't mean "not covering". I mean "disregarding"

3DS releases Mario Kart 7, you praise it.
Vita releases Katamari, you claim it's too much of the same and complain that there have been too many in a short amount of time (despite Mario Kart and Katamari having about the same ratio of platform:installments on that platform).

Good_Guy_Jamal4086d ago

. . .and that is why we reduced our sales forecast by millions yet again.

GalacticEmpire4086d ago (Edited 4086d ago )

I think you parodied the wrong meme...

http://blogs.villagevoice.c...

On topic, I'm glad the Vita is starting to sell better, a price drop in the west should see them jump even further. PS Vita is an amazing bit of kit and there's loads of great games lined up for this year.

Blackdeath_6634085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

yeah i would hate for such an amazing piece of tech to go to ruin. the quality and quantity of the games/software however is what dictates the success of the hardware. the handheld gaming devices market is hard to predict and understand. it is not always clear what effect mobile devices has on handhelds but if there is a very large or hugely significant effect then sony has a line of smartphones which it can(and already has) integrate the playstation brand into something which nintendo doesn't

guitarded774085d ago

If the promise of PS4 remote play works good, then the Vita will sell like crazy.

HarryMasonHerpderp4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

@Good_Guy_Jamal

Dude do you actually have anything positive to say about a Sony product?

Anyway I think a lot of people are waiting for a price drop over in the west. If Sony plays their cards right with the PS4 compatibility, the Vita could easily surpass the success of the PSP. I'm not saying it can't survive on it's own but the PS4 could give it a much needed boost.

Good_Guy_Jamal4085d ago

I'm sure I could if I tried.
My SONY VAIO is the best notebook I've ever had. I love it.
I really loved my Sony Ericsson W550i and W850i walkman phones.
My Sony playstation 3 is also pretty cool, but I'm not a big fan of the fanboys it comes with.
. . .yeah that's all I got. Okay, your turn.

Apollosupreme4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

Jamal, if you don't like fanboys then pick up a deck of cards and go play solitaire in the corner. That's your best bet. Either that or go offline and save us all some eye rolls.

Outside_ofthe_Box4085d ago

***My Sony playstation 3 is also pretty cool, but I'm not a big fan of the fanboys it comes with***

Bet you love the haters it comes with... Hey that's another thing you can add to your list..

Sheikh Yerbouti4085d ago

Funny how Sony gets all this hate and anyone who disagrees is lumped in with fanboys...typically by fanboys.

True with Xbox too, but I don't think Sony fanboys are nearly as hypocritical. A lot of us are just gamers with opinions, and Sony arguably has outperformed 360. Don't be offended; it ain't always a fanboy war, just opinions.

TheRealHeisenberg4085d ago

@ Sheikh Yerbouti

You are f'ing kidding right? I darn near spit out my soda.

Apollosupreme4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

Sheikh Yerbouti, don't kid yourself. People with nothing better to do than troll to get a rise out of others are the same no matter the topic.

Do you think your PS3 is instilling better character in you than the 360 is in Xbox users? I think they're both just boxes you play games on but maybe I'm a minority in that view...

Sheikh Yerbouti4081d ago

Just given the facts, the PS3 has very arguably provided the greatest value of any console this gen, taking momentum that the 360 had early. If the mean of opinion is the truth, general consensus and such, it's been clearly pro-PS3 among the well-informed gamers of N4G. So if one Sony troll says what two posters unbiasedly have as opinion, all three of us are members of the SDF, and N4G is somehow a den of Sony fanboys. LOL!

And here you are again trolling at anything related to Sony.

chrisarsenalsavart4085d ago

coming from the guy who accused few hours ago playstation fans to be inflammatory that s rich.
so keep clear of the ps3 or vita or psp section, and have a nice day.
douche.

Good_Guy_Jamal4085d ago

Thank you, I will have a nice day!

Hicken4085d ago

And yet you have the nerve to call other people trolls and fanboys? Can somebody please explain to me why this guy still has three bubbles?

remanutd554086d ago

I could care less, that's their problem, I do care about games so how about bringing more AAA games to the system Sony?

Deku-Johnny4086d ago

Surely you mean you couldN'T care less.

Roper3164086d ago

some people just don't understand the difference between the 2 sayings, lol

XboxInnovation4086d ago

If u could care less then it means you're still somewhat caring.

If you couldn't care less then it means you're at rock bottom of caring, you can't care anymore. Which is the correct saying.

remanutd554086d ago

sorry typing on my cell phone is a pain sometimes lol

Cocozero4086d ago

So it sold 100 units in a month instead of 10 big whoop Sony. Give numbers and stop reducing sales forecasts because the spin is embarrassing.

Hanso4086d ago

everyone buy Disgaea 3 and Persona 4 for your Vita :)
also look out for Ys Memories of Celceta this fall

FriedGoat4085d ago (Edited 4085d ago )

Hanso4085d ago

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow5d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1824d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie4d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere3d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX4d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney3d ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno4d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno4d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

4d ago
fsfsxii4d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno4d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
