There's nothing in any new shooter coming out that Battlefield 3 just doesn't seem to do better.

By comparison, Rage looks like a less interesting version of Borderlands and Modern Warfare 3 is actually Modern Warfare 2 with new perks/killstreaks/rekins.

The alpha was a bit unoptimized (had no real graphics settings), hopefully the beta and retail games are more optimized.

It's Just Another FPS - Don't you want variety? Aren't you getting tired of staring down the sights of a rifle? With games like Batman: Arkham Planet and Elder Scrolls VI: Holy Crap More Dragons on the horizon, there's plenty of variety on the market. And while Halo 4 sports some pretty nifty graphics, that doesn't change the the fact that it is still a first-person shooter, a genre that has overtaken the industry for years now. A genre that has been beaten to death and is starting to lose its creativity.

In the end, Halo 4 is just another sci-fi shooter that will likely have big set piece moments coupled with a weak story and an overwhelming focus on multiplayer. If you want to experience all the best titles of 2012, you can't be bogged down with countless hours of repetitive multiplayer. You'll be missing out on blockbusters like Uncharted 4 and Doom 5.

OK, I agree with the basic sentiment of the article (that Battlefield 3 is being ridiculously overhyped, resulting in everyone ignoring the existence of every other game in the market bar Modern Warfare 3, meaning that if you proclaim 'I'm not very interested in BF3' everyone automatically assumes that firstly you are a 12 year old CoD playing idiot, apparently the only other type of person, which is wrong), but their points were bad, here's my version:

1. Another modern military FPS - That is, after all, what Battlefield 3 is. Sure, it's pretty and slightly bigger and more realistic than CoD, but it does very little to actually innovate in any part of it's construction, in the way that truly brilliant FPS's - Half-Life, Doom, Quake, Counterstrike, Portal, Bioshock, Halo CE, hell, Call of Duty 4 - have done. The game's simply a cross between elements from Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2, with a generic setting and story ripped directly from others of it's kind. I'm not writing off the genre completely as being a cliche, there are still FPS's that are unique and innovative, but Battlefield 3, in every term, isn't one of them.

2. The community. Call of Duty's community is awful, full of whining, offensive kids, really unpleasant. At the moment, the Battlefield games have fairly communities, everyone's completely mute but they seem to want to play the game properly. One of EA's aims with Battlefield 3 is to get people to jump ship from CoD to them. Naturally, these whining kids will make up a majority of that number, believing themselves to be 'hardcore' for playing what they believe is the epitome of a 'real man's, hardcore game', BF3. Therefore, Battlefield 3's community is awful. Simple.

Adding to that, all of the people who believe that BF3 is the epitome of a 'hardcore, realistic game'. Battlefield 3 is closer to competitors than people like to think. If you want a realistic game, massively open maps, play Red Orchestra 2 or Arma II. If you want something truly difficult, which really does require teamwork and coordination to succeed, as opposed to dropping down medipacks when the mood takes you, play Counterstrike, or Team Fortress 2. When people brag about BF3 being any of these things, they're being narrow minded.

3. EA's business practises. I don't hate EA as a whole. They have a bunch of really talented developers under their wings, like Visceral, Bioware, DICE, now Insomniac, and for the large part their influence doesn't drastically affect the quality of their games, at least compared to Activision, but some of their business decisions are questionable at best. Taking Battlefield 3 off Steam was simply stupid, if they were actually planning on selling any of the PC copies they'd spent tens of millions trying to hype up, they're essentially blocking themselves off from 40% of the PC market, in trying to take a bite out of Steam with Origin - were you ever planning on not playing Battlefield 3? No? Well good, because, since you're bound into downloading Origin for the game, if you leave the game alone for two years at any point, guess what, you don't own the game anymore! Great, isn't it!

As a conclusion, I'm sure BF3 will be a very good game. It will be polished, and shiny, and pretty, and will last a lot of people a long amount of time. And I'll probably buy it too, not at release, and I'll play it. But will it be the absolute god of FPS's as people think it will be. No, just no. That title belongs to Team Fortress 2 :D

The way I see it they're 3 kinds of shooters. Realistic and team based (BF3). Arcade shooters that's are easy to pick up play (COD). And more hardcore-ish sci-fi shooters like halo and resistance.

What a crappy article. Not because it's against BF3, not everybody likes BF, that's ok. But the reasons are just idiotic.

The first, number 3, actually makes a bit of sense, but personally I like shooters. Especially Battlefield so it's not a problem. And when I’ve had enough of modern combat shooters, but still want to play a FPS there's always Halo. Both BF3 and Halo have their own kind of 'epic moments' I've yet to have experienced in the multiplayer of CoD, the last, number 1 reason in this article. But as I said, for certain people it actually makes sense, but then again they probably weren't planning on buying BF3 anyway. They’ll be playing games like Skyrim.

And then the second reason. Here is where the real BS begins. PC games almost always look better than their console version, not just in the case of BF3. Every shooter ‘lends itself to mouse and keyboard’, so that one’s out the window as well.

And of course, bring up the framerate again... Most console games are 30 fps nowadays, and I’ve never had a problem with that. The only games I know (that I play) that are on 60 fps are WipEout HD and GT5. And of course the occasional game of CoD Zombies. Games like Uncharted, BFBC2 and Halo look amazing and play just fine. It also starts to show the writer is biased towards MW3 imo, as 60 fps is one of CoD’s ‘big selling points’.

But the last reason in this article has got to be the worst and most stupid reason ever not to buy a Battlefield game. I should buy MW3 instead of BF3 because supposedly that's what everyone else is playing?! Seriously? I'm not a freaking hipster but that doesn't mean I should follow the mainstream just because it's mainstream (or you tell me it is). And besides that, there are still enough people on BFBC2, and even more will be on BF3.

Also funny is that parts of the first two ‘reasons’ in the article also apply to MW3. Reason number 3 actually completely contradicts number 1. Modern Warfare 3 will also be ANOTHER shooter, and while BF3 actually changes quite a lot compared to its predecessor, MW3 will again be using the same engine, so it’s also ANOTHER Call of Duty. And the funny thing is, Counter Strike Source on 'max' (there isn't really a max, movie configs add new shaders etc.) graphics looks better than any CoD game (though the map scale is smaller...).

Regarding the author's #1 reason, he already made that invalid by complaining at FPSs in #4 lol.

Oh and I was going to say: MW on PC doesn't feel like a port. The only port-type things are the simplified ping meter and the lack of dedicated servers. At least it has a very smooh feeling mouse input. The core game itself supports PC extremely well unlike 99.999% of other ports.

MW3 might actually be a fairly good game though. If you read word from the developers it seems like they actually have their head screwed on. Even in their job openings the way they describe the type of person they look to employ shows that they are eager to make a genuinely good game this time... but who knows - Activision will break it somehow.

I am not buying BF3 or MW3 on launch.
BFBC2 is still a messy pile of bugs and DICE have a history of refusing to fix bugs properly. MW3 will probably still not be as good as CoD4 and hence will not be worth buying.

Battlefield 3 will have screen tearing and won't run above 30 frames per second on consoles (just like BF2, BFBC and BFBC2)

I was originally super pumped for BF3. I was a huge fan of BF2 and the Bad Company series, but compared to upcoming sequels such as Skyrim and Arkham City, it feels as if little progress has been made with Battlefield. Let us not forget also that Battlefield's attempts at single player campaigns are simply dreadful- some of the worst video game writing I've experienced.

A fair point, there are only a handful- besides the Bioshocks, Half Lifes and Portals, the Halo series and Call of Duty series are actually pretty consistent and very respectable and there are some you wouldn't expect such as Left 4 Dead.

It is a shame that the most immersive of viewpoints- first person, is rarely used to tell a great story.

But still, I just couldn't continue playing Bad Company 2 single player- the missions were so boring and unoriginal and the dialogue was more cringe worthy than Gears. Though I will add that the presentation of the BC2 Vietnam expansion really lent itself to creating dynamic stories and I found myself truly reliving scenes from Apocalypse Now and Platoon. They can really make a fantastic multiplayer, just I'm a little bored with the formula nowadays.

I'm still buying COD over BF, but even I'll admit he's talking out his @ss. It really comes down to preference, I prefer running like a lunatic killing people and my friends, so I prefer COD lol. BF while enjoyable IMO just was WAAAY to big for 24 players. But like I said my opinion, whoever says BF doesn't look good though is lying straight up. How many awards did BF win at E3 ? How many did COD win ? there you go, I'm pretty sure BF one a lot more. If BF wasn't released this year I Bet you my hand that MW3 would have some multiplayer gameplay by now, BF showed their muscle and Infinity Ward (what's left of them)

I've been to War and I've played both games... and I believe BF captures the essence of what it is like to be in a firefight better on a larger scale... obviously because all the vehicles and shit going around... that's what it's like sometimes... guys on the streets, tanks down the roads, and choppers over head... humvees scattered in formations providing cover... .50 cals, Mk-19's... you name it.
