Rather than shutting studios down or pulling funding PS could have reworked these projects into proper, non live service games. That might have been the better option. Flashing cash and promising financial security before pulling the rug out from under the studio isn't a good look.
@Chevalier
None of what you've said is remotely relevant. If SE were choosing to not release on Xbox due to low sales that would be one thing. I could understand that. But that's not what happened. Sony *paid* them to never release the game on Xbox. This has long been the rumour but we now have a PS executive openly admitting it. This is not a healthy precedent.
Correct, so 1.5 years.
So 1.5 years?
@Hypertension
Since you don't know how to read, at no point did I say it's ok to buy a publisher. There's also a difference between buying something and paying to keep something off of a specific platform, the difference being ownership.
@Chevalier
Read your own link. Gears was never actually coming to PS. Gears code and assets were used internally to build and optimize Unreal Engine 3 for the PS3. Maybe you forgot but Micro...
Halo isn't a fair comparison tbh. Xbox actually develops and publishes Halo themselves. This is a 3rd party game. Paying for timed exclusivity is one thing, but we don't normally see a manufacturer pay to keep a 3rd party game off the competitors platform literally forever. That's not something that should ever happen, and I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. The last thing we need is Sony and MS going around buying permanent exclusivity on a bunch of big 3rd party game...
It's not realistic. The Steam Deck has been on sale for 2 years and has only pushed an estimated 3 or 4 million units. The number is so low that Valve only says they've sold "multiple millions". A console would likely do worse because it doesn't have the freedom and customizability that people love about PC gaming rigs. Whereas a handheld offers freedom and playability that PC gamers wouldn't have otherwise, a console offers a worse version of the experience they alr...
"Someone with roots in entertainment. Not Amazon, Apple, or another company similar to Microsoft."
LOL. Such as? Do you understand how expensive it is to R&D and actually produce consoles? The profit margins are razor thin. You need to make money by publishing software. None of the 3rd party publishers can afford to become a console manufacturer.
And before you say Valve you need to realize that the Steam Deck has only sold 3 or 4 million un...
Considering Xbox isn't getting the FF7 remake trilogy, did you really expect the Xbox fanbase to buy the prequel?
"It was until Destiny released that same year where "Live Service" or "Games As Service" came into fruition (ppl didn't know what to call yet still)"
That's not true. Team Fortress 2 was already doing it by that time and Gabe Newell was the one that coined the term "Games as a Service".
They bought a bunch of studios that were literally just starting up. Not smart in hindsight. These teams have never made games together, you can't know what the environment or coworker dynamic is going to be like.
Helldivers 2, sure. It's a great game and yeah Sony does deserve credit for publishing that. But FF7 Rebirth isn't even their game. They're not developing it, nor are they publishing it. It's a Square Enix game, not a PlayStation game regardless of timed-exclusivity.
The thing most companies don't understand is that the vast majority of piracy is not a lost sale. Those people never would have bought the game regardless. Fighting piracy has historically never made a positive impact on sales. Though it *can* have a negative impact when you start using stuff like Denuvo. Nintendo sees those 1 million downloads as potential sales but they really aren't.
Contractors wouldn't be counted as full time staff. These were actual Insomniac devs.
Uhh... Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you need to sign into a Tesla account in order to even use the vehicle? And don't additional drivers also need to make their own accounts in order to drive your Tesla vehicle?
Isn't a Microsoft account just an email? Don't you already have one? Gonna be honest, that's a dumb reason to skip a game.
@Bathyj
Do you just not bother reading before responding?
Depends on the game. Lowering resolution isn't always enough to get 60fps. Sometimes even lowering graphics settings isn't enough. If there's a lot of CPU-bound stuff going on you can end up in a situation where 60fps just isn't possible. I'm not saying Pacific Drive is that situation at all, I'm just explaining that 60fps isn't always going to be possible.
Pacific Drive isn't a racer. It's more of a Driving Thriller/Horror game. Reaction time isn't really that important here.
Honestly I'd like a Magic: The Gathering RPG in the style of BG3. With all the lore, Planeswalkers as NPCs, creature types, spells, etc, there could be a really cool game there.
