It’s not a novel answer, but God of War really delivered this year. It has my favorite combat system in years, and though I wasn’t blown away by the story I was in love with the characters.

To the original commenter: Are you protecting someone? These girls can’t thank you, they’re imaginary.

So you must be preventing something, right? These games mainly function as an outlet, and aren’t nearly mainstream enough to be converting innocent men to a life of pedophilia.

With those options eliminated the only conclusion I can settle on is that you’re trying to police morality, but the only person that really benefits is you.

Yeah, like I said earlier, it’s the kind of thing that makes you want to write off the rest of the article without even reading it first. Not a great way to establish credibility before giving your opinion on something.

He’s asking what part of the title was misspelled in the first place.

I imagine he’s an elitist speaker of British English. Regardless of nationality, it should have been taken as a sign that what came after would be pretentious.

Put a woman in something and gamers are suddenly sticklers for historical accuracy.

Not sure if it qualifies, but the Ghost of Tsushima trailer got me hyped more than anything else all year. Also, I was pretty excited to read the God of War reviews.

This is exactly why I came to post. Even if it wasn’t his daughter, you know your political correctness radar is a little too sensitive when the mere presence of a female character makes you wonder if you’re in “gone mad” territory.

It’s a little too bizarre to assume his goal was anything beyond generating traffic.

The biggest news for me was more of a lack of news regarding certain properties owned by companies like Square Enix and Konami.

CDPR seems like the obvious choice here. I personally think they’re a little full of themselves, but there’s no doubting they put fans first, even if sometimes I feel they only do it to satisfy their own egos and remind us they’re better than the rest of the industry. Either way, gamers win.

In previous generations my answer would’ve been Bungie (none of the Halo sequels could replicate what made the original so great). Now I’d say it’s Square Enix. They consistently miss the mark, demonstrating they either don’t really understand what made people love their games in the first place or don’t really care.

Also, I saw her in an interview and thought she was cute and funny, so there’s that. I hadn’t realized she was THAT Ashley Birch.

Ashley Birch in Horizon Zero Dawn. With a lot of voice actors you can almost hear them muttering to themselves, “Look at me, I’m acting!” But Ashley’s performance as Aloy was seamlessly authentic and believable. I never got the feeling she was overthinking her lines, instead delivering them the way you’d actually expect someone in her situation to react. She sounded like somebody you knew, and that humanized the character for me in a way no other game has managed.

She’s far from terrible but the actress who played Triss in W3 bugged me. Obviously I was less than excited to hear her voice in the Cyberpunk gameplay video as well, as it seems there’s bound to be a lot more of her in my future.

Easy. It’s Remedy.

They got away with an action/horror game where you’re a flashlight-wielding writer who gathers batteries like they’re ammunition, and somehow the whole thing was more magical and creative than it had any right to be. Sure, they’re loved by critics and “hardcore” gamers, but they’re still way under the mainstream’s radar, and that’s one of the biggest injustices in modern gaming.

This is the first thing I thought of as well. They can’t afford to be complacent anymore, their platform will need a killer exclusive.

Kojima forever earned a place in my heart when he posted on Twitter that he was listening to one of my all time favorite songs, Starless by King Crimson. He’s no god, but he’s damn good at what he does.

My vote goes to Jade Raymond. I wouldn’t even know who she was if some marketing genius hadn’t decided her face needed to be everywhere.

Ken Levine. I’m a sucker for worlds where a bump in the road of history leads to a cleverly themed alternate timeline.

Fallout gets points for this as well, though Horizon Zero Dawn perfected the idea and created the first open world that compelled me to explore every nook and cranny.

I’m always a little surprised RPGs haven’t grown more. I mean, you’re already picking from a pretty hardcore pool of players, I’d imagine it would be a little easier to take risks. There are so many cool turns you could take in a genre that gives players that much control over the world and the progression of their characters, but mainstream RPGs still tend to play things relatively safe.
