Let's just assume that you are correct in your interpretation of what Stringer meant (and I assume you are). Then why didn't just say that? Why is Sony always so unclear in their announcements?

Console wise, I've got no problems with the PS3 per se, but holy sh!t do Microsoft and Nintendo ever make me more excited about their products than do Sony. Until Sony's got the games to back up all of their promises, they've gotta get better PR so that we can ...

But it's more than a new release DVD, maybe $7.99 CDN.

And he was wrong. Regardless of how the PS3 performs, the guy has been repeatedly wrong in the last few months. GameSpot's last two podcasts have been mocking him for his random, flawed predictions.

Analysts are important in terms of marketing decisions, but let's see what actually happens. We'll have a much better picture by this holiday season.

Yeah, I think that Sony's splitting its intentions a bit curiously at the moment. Given the price, the console will really primarily appeal to very hardcore gamers and/or the rare audio/video enthusiast (the people who care about Blu-ray). In that respect, these people probably already have a good idea about the features.

On the other hand, they want to try to appeal to casual gamers with titles like SingStar and the new EyeToy. So it would seriously be in their interest to sta...

My friends and I have have frequently spoken about how Sony's not doing a really good job at conveying all of the features of the PS3 (which, if you care about that stuff, could be argued to be a better value than the 360). Many people that I know who are 'casual gamers' have NO IDEA what Blu-ray is! All they see is the $600 price tag and ask why it's sooo much more expensive than the Xbox 360 or the Wii.

Sony's advertisements shouldn't be about exploding chromatic babies. They...

This would basically mean that the PS3 is supposed to sell 8.5 million units in the next six-months? That's about 4 million units higher than any other prediction I've seen. How is it that the PS3 could outsell the 360 overall this year when the 360 has so far been outselling the PS3 every month? I'm not fanboying, but I don't see where this massive surge of PS3 sales is going to come from this year (as opposed to any comparable, Halo 3, surge the 360 may get).

I also think that the PS3 is a very well built machine, but anyone who denies that the original PS2s had awful read-heads and that the system had a pretty high failure rate is delusional. Microsoft surely has to get their act together, but Sony never acknowledged how shoddy their original PS2s were... Or how about their statements about how 'Burnt pixels were a normal part of LCD screens' when the PSP launched?

I love what Sony's done with their consoles in the past, but to cla...

All my friend's original PS1s broke at least once, and all of our PS2s broke at least once and sometimes twice. Also, the original PS2s sometimes had problems with reading their own discs... Finally, I went through 3 PSPs and every single one of them had at least 3 burnt pixels.

Unlike the 3 DSs our household has owned. Actually, I've never had a problem with a Nintendo product (except my original NES that died after 10 years).

The monopoly comment is ridiculous. You've still got plenty of competition between companies to release games on that one system and no one is going to buy games from the company that decides to go above the standard price point (I guess they're already doing that with special editions though). The PC is technically already a 'one-console' monopoly in its field and was for a long time, SNES games were way more expensive in Canada than PC games ever were. And it had competition.

I only read PSM, and they made the PS3's lackluster sales seem way better than they actually were. The only way that Sony's actually going to DO something about the mess they've created is if people speak up about it and vote with their dollars (if they haven't gotten the message already, then they're pretty dense).

If you just buy the console even though you're pissed off at Sony for having lost all those exclusives, made all those bad PR mistakes and run a terrible advertisin...

I'm not exactly sure what Sony's plan is anyways. I agree with the previous commenters in that, if you ask anyone who's not deeply into gaming (if they are, they've probably already made a decision about what next-gen console they're going to buy) they'll never have heard of Heavenly Sword, Lair or Uncharted. The ONLY thing people are talking about is MGS IV, and now it looks like that's not coming this year.

It just boggles my mind that Sony not only released the console at a ...

I don't know about the PS3 though. A lot of people say that there's a huge group of people 'just waiting' to buy it. Among my gamer friends, I don't get that impression at all. No matter how hardcore Sony fans they are (we've all got PS2s!) no one sees anything coming out this year that would be a 'deal clincher'.

MGSIV is on the horizon, but most likely 2008. Right now the big problem is the price... But once MS's fall line up catapults the 360 back into the limelight, not eve...

We're still measuring sales of these things in the 10,000s! A single good DVD can outsell all Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies sold to date combined in a week!

Blu-ray may destroy HD-DVD, but it's frickin' nickels and dimes right now. Why would the public give up on traditional DVDs anytime soon? Think of how long it took DVD to become established.

Are we going to have to hear about this for years to come???

And I'm willing to believe that most PS3 owners will buy this. But there's also gonna be that 13+ million 360 base that may be financially tempting as well. But like I said, MGS2 didn't sell all that hot, so we'll have to see.

But the fact that Konami won't outright deny it makes you kinda wonder eh? I mean, look at how quick Epic quashed Gears PS3 rumours... The ONLY reason I could see Konami doing this is for the money. Realistically, if the PS3 only has say 6 million installed at the end of the year, it may just be financially obligatory in order to recoup losses... That being said, MGS2 didn't sell well on Xbox at all.

I'd refuse to believe it except for the fact that Konami ain't denying it outr...

I love Bioware like everyone else, but I think that with Jade Empire, their RPGs are getting a bit too 'light'. I really enjoyed the deep strategy of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

I'm REALLY hoping that Mass Effect is a combination of the newer excellent Bioware story-telling with the depth-of-gameplay of their original titles. Everything I've seen looks awesome though!

P.S. Please bring back an inventory system!!!

And everyone can rest assured that Sony is going to be in it for the long haul. That being said, I think that what analysts are more interested in is whether the PS3's massive price point IS the deciding factor causing it's lagging sales.

New titles are going to hit later this year, but will that be enough to turn people onto the $599 price point? Sony's not dead, but the question that remains is whether they're actually going to be seeing a dent in their previous market-share....
