Former PlayStation US bigwig Shawn Layden has weighed in on the subject of video game preservation during a chat with Lan Parties, stating that more should be done by the big players in the industry to help preserve games.
Preservation is important. I’m hoping that more people in the industry, certainly the big players, begin to realize that there’s an obligation and responsibility. This isn’t throw-away stuff we’re making. This is stuff that should be around for a long time because future generations will enjoy it in the same way that we have and it’s criminal that we’re not doing more to protect it.
Sony in particular has come under attack for its poor attitude towards game preservation, having originally announced plans to shutter the PSP, PS Vita, and PS3 stores back in March 2021. This was met with widespread backlash, resulting in the format holder confirming the Vita and PS3 stores would remain open.
"Bring him back! Or put Shuhei in charge"
I would rather have Jack as Playstation CEO and Shu as President/Head of Playstation Studios.
But Layden is definitely better than Ryan
Wouldn't your rather the government pass a law banning PlayStation and requiring all citizens to purchase 15 Xboxes and GP subs?
@Eonjay
"Wouldn't your rather the government pass a law banning PlayStation and requiring all citizens to purchase 15 Xboxes and GP subs?"
No.
I don´t want Playstation to disappear. Actually, I want Playstation to be quite successful and maintain its leadership on the market so MS could´t never get back to their cocky ways and f* with Xbox gamers ever again.
If you read my comment history, You´ll be able to confirm by yourself that I´d been actually encouraging your PS pals hurt by MS latest acquisitions to boycott Xbox games and support Sony instead.
So I´ve been noticing that only Jin Sakai, jznrpg and Apocalypse Shadow will actually walk the talk and boycott MS unlike some hypocrites talking sh*t about monopoly and consolidation, while giving their money to MS anyway.
Botton line, though, without Playstation as competition, Xbox gamers are doomed! Period!
It's not that they don't mind. People just know what to expect from Nintendo. They're ridiculous in many ways. Charging for a terrible counterintuitive online service? Cracking down in emulation when they don't do enough for their own game preservation? Charging a premium for the tech they've got?
People mind, but they are perhaps willing to treat their bad behavior with less weight because they do deliver with games. It's functionally an abusive relationship with good sex.
Bizarre analogy, but I think it's true.
Whilst the compang does the bare minimum with backwards compatibility?
Preservation of games isn't just BC, so many gamers don't actually know what the full meaning of preservation even means.
That's true, but the main focus from a consumer standpoint is allowing gamers to continue to play their older titles.
Preserving the history through backwards compatibility and ease of access, which Sony don't do a great job at...YET.
The ps catalogue is continually expanded and love being able to play older titles I enjoyed on PS3 like Tekken 6, so at least they're moving in the right direction on that front, albeit very slowly.
Learn grammar is a bit rich coming from you who can't differentiate between your and you're. English clown 😂
Does this mean we can have a lot more "Playstation Classics"? I don't feel like we're getting enough for what was promised, at least they added a few games this month.
True. I've been waiting for some of those old school rpgs from the ps1 ps2 Era, where f is legend of legaia Sony
Oh yes! Give me Legaia! I don't have my original PS1 copy any more (idk even know what happened to it). There's so many games I missed the first time around, I would love the opportunity to play them.
The boom of Playstation Classics seems to have fizzled out last gen. Now it's mostly remakes or remasters.
Sony is in a position where they could do a lot, with their premium games. They have all the systems in place to do something cool on the psp, ps2 and psx front, but they don't really want to, it seems.
Thats good but hey almost everything is getting remakes and remasters so it's not that hard
A new trailer for BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Supermassive Game’ upcoming Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock has just been released. The brand new trailer reveles that the game will in fact be a 2D platformer and players will be able to play as The Doctor and River Song.
I'm thrilled it's a platformer because they can't screw that up.
I was afraid it was gonna be a point and click adventure game and those suck.
This looks like Shadow Comlpex and that would be totally cool.
I was personally hoping for an "adventure" game, along the lines of the new Sam&Max games, or even the X-Files PS1 game (if anyone remembers that). I think that would work for a Dr. Who game.
Or even better IMO would be a Dr. Who game made in what I call "the new generation of adventure games" which I think there are only 2 examples of so far......Heavy Rain and Jurrasic Park. A Dr Who game done like Heavy Rain would be INCREDIBLE.
Regardless of what I wish it were, I'll probably buy this game just because of the fact that I've been a Dr. Who fan basically since I was born (in the Tom Baker days), and have never played any kind of Dr. Who game, when I've been a gamer for the same amount of time.
I love Dr.s 1-5 and 9 and 10. Matt Smith isn't a bad Dr either, but after Tennant who was right there with Tom Baker, any actor wasn't going to be as good. But there has been some good stories in the Smith days, so I do like 11 as well.
But that's my problem with the game. If you asked 1000 Dr Who fans who their fav Doctor is, the vast majority wouldn't say Matt Smith. So I'm REALLY hoping this developer is smart enough to want to appeal to ALL Dr. Who fans and have unlockable Doctor skins, preferably for every single Doctor. But at the very least a Tennant, T.Baker and Hartnell skin to choose from. Besides, isn't this upcoming season supposedly going to be Smith's last? I thought I read that months ago. So they really shouldn't stick us with just the Matt SMith Doctor to use.
Actually doesn't half look bad. Doctor Who is a tricky thing to convert into videogames due to the Doctor's pacifism, I never once thought of a 2D platformer.
I always pictured it as a Mass Effect style game where you travel to different planets solving puzzels and righting wrongs.
Also, the current Doctor would be fatally wounded in the opening scenes and regenerate into your created character.
The pacificism is always going to be an issue with a video game version, but the idea of avoiding combat platforming adventure seems alright...
I'd rather see a Torchwood (Dr Who spin-off) game, but I'd bet the sexual orientation of the characters would be mostly or completely ignored in a videogame.
I think you meant 3DS. But No. So far it hasn't been confirmed for the 3DS. Don't worry though sooner or later it will come to the 3DS.

GameZone's Matt Liebl writes, "There is no denying, when it comes to HD remakes, Sony is the best there is. For years now, PS3 fans have been able to relive the games they grew up playing with a fabulous HD makeover. They've had the God of War Collection, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, the Tomb Raider Trilogy, and much more. The list of amazing HD remakes could go on. Which begs the question, when will Microsoft begin to do something similar?"
Read the first quote and thought "Great! He's being positive towards a rival"
Then I read the last and thought "I knew there was a catch!"
As great as it would be for the companies to get along, I just don't see it happening :(
Still hoping for a Sony hardware and MS software combined consile!
"I [don't] want to get into a world where people felt like I was just trying to sell them things that they've already played."
That you mean? By removing backwards compability from the PS3 and releasing a flood of semi-updated remakes Sony found a great way to cut production costs and earn an easy buck from old PS2 games.
I don't think his comment is out of line at all. MS just chose to keep BC and offer Xbox games as downloadable titles on the side.
@ - lorianguy - True. Even if I agree with him it would probably be smarter to leave it unsaid.
Not out of line at all, just kinda takes away the positivity from his first statement.
Ummm, wait a minute here. Not EVERY game is bc with the 360. There r Only a handful out there.
"By removing backwards compability from the PS3 and releasing a flood of semi-updated remakes Sony found a great way to cut production costs and earn an easy buck from old PS2 games."
So.....it's not like they're releasing the PS2 games in their normal form, they get a HD makeover, the cram a trilogy onto one disc and give the games trophy support.
I don't see what the problem is
"releasing a flood of semi-updated remakes Sony found a great way to cut production costs and earn an easy buck from old PS2 games."
The funny thing is gamers actually want HD remakes. How many people do you see wanting a Kingdom Hearts HD remake and Jak&Daxter HD remake(in the works and I plan on buying it)? Killzone 1 is being released on PSN, but people want it remade in HD. Recently Vice City and GTA 3 were announced to come to the PS3 and guess what? People are hoping that it's an HD remake. There is actual consumer demand for HD remakes it's not just Sony trying to make a quick easy buck.
Xbox is only backwards compatible to some old Xbox games and not all of them work.
And although they are just trying to make fast money there are some collections where it would be more expensive to buy them pre owned. Shadow of collosus and Ico collection for example each one of those games goes for around £15 here in the UK cause there so rare :)
and bring up past gems so the newer generation isnt alawys a bad thing :)
At first I was a bit angry with the removal of backward compatibility however I think Sony have redeemed themselves. With all these HD remakes I think Sony understood us gamers dont ONLY want new games, but we also want to relive our good old memories with the technology of today (so HD).
So Sony essentially took one step back, however TWO steps forward. I have no problem paying a few pounds for a HD remake. They are 100% worth it. I love splinter cell (not so much the latest one, conviction) and bought the HD trilogy and MAN has it pleased me. I'm thinking of buying the GOD OF WAR ones as well. Because I believe they are worth it especially at the price they are at and I'm sure people feel the same way.
So I dont understand you point of 'releasing a flood of semi-updated remakes'
Actually there are HD remake on PS3, but more than that there are still a lot of exclusives and core oriented games on PS3.
HD remake is just a bonus in the offer.
I think Microsoft should focus on the othr thing that Sony is doing great : Quantity of exclusives games, the quatinty and also the quality. If they could at least do the same job now it would be perfect.
"There r Only a handful out there."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
A lot more than a handful.
They didn't "remove" backwards compatibility from existing systems. Only the newer systems did not come with it.
Sony isn't simply reselling PS2 games that I already have. If I wanted to play them, then I'd play them on my PS2.
The reason why people buy them is because their favorite games are remastered in HD + Trophies. Or they may no longer posses these games or never got a chance to play them in the first place.
HATERS.
Nice little jab there, Microsoft. You lost me with your latest dashboard update and refusal to make any first party games that aren't Kinect oriented. The LEAST you could do is make some freakin remakes!
Gamestop corporate told me xbox doesnt really have backwards compatibility, so they dont accept classic xbox games as a trade in.
When i emailed them why they wouldnt accept my xbox games as trade ins. This was back in 2007.
"Ummm, wait a minute here. Not EVERY game is bc with the 360. There r Only a handful out there"
And @ Kaveti
I wouldn't say a handful, but only a handful work PERFECTLY. It was clearly made with Halo 1/2 in mind. Other games stutter a lot.
"I [don't] want to get into a world where people felt like I was just trying to sell them things that they've already played."
But you're ok releasing 5 or 6 halo titles in the span of one console generation? Can you say contradiction??
Just be real, he's bashing Sony because its an American company that is used to be #1, and when another company discovers an amazing new thing, they bash it instead of recognizing it for the good idea that it was. The same problem can be said in US politics.
And please, I know a 21 yr old gamer who has only just started gaming in the last year, people need to think outside of themselves and realize they aren't the only people on the planet, and that there are millions of potential customers out there who have never played anything from PS2 or before that.
@matt801: "Not EVERY game is bc with the 360. There r Only a handful out there."
wow, you are VERY wrong. there are actually only a handful out there that ARENT backwards compatible. the list of BC xbox games was 300+ long last time i checked. thats for a console that was only around for 4 years.
"I think Spencer is missing the mark with his statement. Sony doesn't just sell games people have "already played". Yes, they are the same games people love but with entirely new ways to experience them - with added trophies, 3D support and HD upgrades, and various bonuses. It's not just The Sly Collection. It's The Sly Collection with added PlayStation Move support. It's a brand new experience added to a game you already love."
hahaha add move support or 3D all you want, its still the same game youve already played and already bought. the only reason they removed backwards compatibility was so they could sell you the PS2 games that you wanted to play again. it wasnt cost cutting or anything, it was so youd have to fork out more money.
@IHateYouFanboys
"The last update for Xbox 360 backwards compatibility in North America was 2007-11-27, raising the total number of Xbox games compatible with the Xbox 360 to 478. Approximately 51% of the original Xbox library is now compatible with the Xbox 360 (as of the 2007-11-27 update). The latest European update was in November 2007, now with a total of 476 compatible games. The latest update for Japan was released on 2007-11-28, with 122 working games."
"Approximately 51% of the original Xbox library is now compatible with the Xbox 360 (as of the 2007-11-27 update)."
49% NOT compatible is more than just a "handful"...it's next to 1/2 the library.
I'm annoyed in the fact that I can't play Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes, but I'm happy that I can play Kingdom Under Fire: Crusades.
I love how one comment stirs up so much emotion.
Phil simply said Anniversary was celebrating the 10 Anniversary of the most important franchise on the 360 and never intended to start a line of HD upgrade/remakes.
But, the truth is I loved what 343 and the boys pulled off with Halo Anniversary (which as every Halo release got alot of hate prior to it's release)
Regardless of the overall company's disposition, the HD remakes are amazing for us fans of the past gen classics and it allows for the new gen to finally esperience what us gamers were blabbling about all this time.
With that said God of War HD Collection is one of my fave PS3 releases period. Just amazing to relive the gameplay perfection of those two games prior to GOW3 releasing.
I was screaming for joy when I heard SOTC was going to be released. It was the reason I had always wanted the BC fat PS3. But what is amazing is the fact that this priceless classic is now in 3D. That feature should have gotten wayyyy more attention than it did. I hope there more like the Ico collection to follow.
I'm all in for the remakes, as I said, when Killzone was annnounced that it would have been a perfect candidate for HD.
But, whether Micrsoft makes them or not, the console still gets releases like the Metal Gear Solid colection etc.
Cant wait for Tony Hawk and Devil May Cry..but still crossing fingers for King's Field HD, Point Blank collection for Move, Shenmue 1 and 2, Bioware's gems KOTOR and Jade Empire etc..I'd even take last gens Elder Scrolls ( come to think of it that would be nothing short of EPIC)
Anyboy who ownas a 360 knows that lot of titles like Halo,San Andreas etc have true improvements when the original disc has been thrown into the 360.
But at the end of the day, I'll take some great remakes over some of these HD collection as well.

"I wouldn't say a handful, but only a handful work PERFECTLY. It was clearly made with Halo 1/2 in mind. Other games stutter a lot."
I wouldn't know because I haven't tested every game out there. Halo 2 and Kotor worked very well on my 360. As far as your comment that these games don't work "PERFECTLY" on 360, I'm a little confused because even PS3 and 360 games don't run PERFECTLY on their respective consoles.
What you're doing is downplaying without evidence. If you read the Wiki page it says that several games were removed from the list of compatible games after it was discovered that they didn't run well enough. That means that they actually took the time to see which games were fairly compatible and did some pruning.
Flippin eck...the number of Sony fanboys gets greater and greater every day. Look at the people agreeing with the so-called lack of backwards compatible titles on the 360. Seriously.....just grow up!
The lack of BC is a big problem on the PS3 considering how incredibly strong the PS2 lineup of games is. And no, don't any of you morons come along and say "well buy a PS2".
@Tose
I'd never played ICO or GOW Ghost of Sparta before their HD PS3 Collections. No need to tow the line so hard calling people naive blind idiots who are experiencing some of these games for the first time.
As for the return customers, I highly doubt Phil Spencer and his key demographic are still using VHS and cassettes, having never upgraded a movie or song they've already heard or owned before onto a newer/better format like a DVD boxset or CD/MP3. A lot of comicbook fans buy the singles and later the Trade Paperback as well for the bookshelf. This is nothing new for collectors.
This isn't some on-disc DLC scam, but rather full games, some of the finest of the past 10 years preserved for another generation. First time games like MGS3 have ever been on XBox, or MGS PeaceWalker have even been on console. How is that a bad ride?
"It's fun that someone from MS said it- needs to be said. I hope that someday people wake up and realise how much of a ride these HD remakes are."
Funny considering that both sides are re-releasing older games. They're doing JUST as much as a ride with older release games, as Sony is to the HD releases.
"As great as it would be for the companies to get along, I just don't see it happening :("
Sony and Microsoft do more than just make competing consoles.
Just because they both produce a console doesn't mean they're bitter enemies.
True. It's likely that Sony devs use MS programs in development, plus I know they have some multimedia partnerships (video especially) so it's not like they are duking it out on all fronts.
I worked for gamestop and the reason they have taken xbox games off the trade in list is the demand is too low and they have limited space. They have done this with pc games and ps1 gamews and soon to be gamecube games.
Typical Microsoft compliments. Saying they did a good job with HD remakes while injecting negativity against them at the same time. Just say, you guys did a great job, end sentence. 'It like saying 'You are very pretty, but you will never be as pretty as that girl over their'.
@ JellyJelly. If you want to play the same outdated versions of games you can buy a PS2 for peanuts. Many of us prefer updated versions with better graphics, trophies and additional content like in the Sly Cooper collection. Some of the games they remade I couldn't even afford or find if I wanted to. Do you know how hard it is to find Ico at a reasonable or affordable price? You can b***h on and on about BC all you want but I would rather conveniently play all three updated Jak games on Bluray then to search everywhere for all three on old PS2 discs just to be cheap.
The graphics aren't better they're just not subhud. It's just a higher framerate hd version. They don't change any textures.
@h311raiser
Nathan Phail-Liff , Art Director from Ready At Dawn Studios re. GOW Origins HD:
"The first goal we had was simply the daunting task of up-rezing the engine and content authored on a PSP running at 480 x 272 resolution and 30 frames per second to 1920 x 1080p at a steady 60 fps on the PS3. This required a custom PS3 version of our engine, coded in-house exclusively for the Origins Collection, as well as a painstaking process by art team. We ended up going through every single character in the game and doubling or tripling polygon count by hand, as well as UP-REZING AND RE-PAINTING EVERY TEXTURE ACROSS BOTH GAMES AT 4X RESOLUTION ON BOTH CHARACHTERS AND ENVIRONMENTS." http://blog.us.playstation....
That's before they even added the 3D.
A fair amount of work goes into making *quality* conversions, and adding trophies isn't dirt cheap requiring just a flip of the switch by the Oompa Loompas at Sony HQ, or every old game would have them including million sellers Resistance FOM & MGS4. The old Max Payne games on XBLA for example don't have any such bells'n'whistles. Bit of a jab by Phil Spencer, considering.
P-bomb, don't try to educate pathetics misinformed fanboyz ;)
by the way, microsoft, pathetic again..
talking about fanboyz, straighpath a well known ms employee says "idiots fall for it " ignoring the fact that the games are now HD, 3D, etc, not just the old games, for a small price (idiots are buying your inferior console, with no ewxclusives, no bluray, and are paying to play online : free on better hardware, pc and ps3)

It's amazing what you can achieve when you actually bother, isn't it?. (took me 20 seconds)
removing backwards compatibility
rehasing and releasing old games for higher price
idiots fall for it
sony profit.
most of these games releashed can be purchased for a fraction of the price and if PS3 had backwards comptability people would be able to replay their old classics games rather then buying them again.
People didn't buy the PS3 when it had BC, So they took it out! Now all I hear are people whining about it. I bought it when it really did every thing! I understand people "couldn't afford it or didn't think it was worth the price" but, I have no problems playing all my PS1/2 games on mine! That's a lie, i actually haven't played a PS2 game in years.....to many great PS3 games out right now!
Yes I would love to play the old grainy, bad camera angle, low res, no trophy games. Why would I want to play upgraded versions at all? I should just go everywhere and find some dusty version of ICO that cost a fortune when I could just buy both SOTC and ICO with better graphics and trophies.
We always have to listen to 'buy them again' Half of the PS2 library I have never ever played and it is getting harder and harder to find certain games.
I am tired of the griping about Sony using their back catalog to sell games when Nintendo does it all the time with every game they had since the GBA and articles and gamers barely ever point it out. I don't remember seeing any slots on the Wii that play Gamecube, N64 and SNES games and yet it is Sony that always gets the hits for what they do. If you want to play old games so badly do like what other people do. Buy a PS2. It costs peanuts.
I have a BC PS3 and have never once used the feature. I have my PS2 copies of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, still bought the HD collection, and am glad I did. I don't think releasing two or three visually updated games with Trophy support for 2/3 the price of a normal new game is such a bad thing or a rip-off in any way.
I don't get all the whining about HD remakes. These games that are being remade typically sold a few million or less, even at the top end we're probably talking less than 10 million, and I'm being generous with the numbers here. Even if every one of those purchasers of the original game also own a PS3 that leaves 50+ million PS3 owners that never bought these games.
That is a sizable untapped market, it would be stupid to ignore it. And having BC doesn't address this market, there just aren't that many of the original games to be found.
i'm proud of being the idiot that discovered god of war collection and played god of war 3 the day after i finish it.
i never played ico and sotc and bought in on psn, and i'm sure i will spend a great time playing both.
i'm the idiot who discovered sly collection and had a great time
i bought other hd remakes, and i'm really fine with that.
i didn't buy the ghost of sparta collection, because i thought it was just a simple upscale.
but now, after checking the link P_Bomb provided(thanks man for that link), i'm gonna be a big idiot, again, and will buy ghost of sparta hd collection, tonight.
they put a lot of love into those remakes, and really deserve my money.
in a couple of years, when most people have a 3d tv, ps3 owners will be more than happy to be able to play many great titles, in 3d.
i don't have 1, because replacing my tv by the same quality and size, but with 3d, would cost me at least 3k. but in 2 years, when 3d 60" with the features found today on hi-end models will cost about 1k, or less, i will be happy to play my "old" ps3 games in 3d. just look at this list: http://www.3dtested.com/3d-...
i finished killzone 3 several times, and i'll be happy to play it in a 60", in 3d. as many other games, like motorstorm apocalypse, gt5, uncharted 3, and so on.
yes, i'm an idiot. but a happy one ;)
HD remakes really depends from person to person. I own a lot of these HD remake ps2 games already, so to me, BC is better.
If you haven't, then HD remakes is actually not that bad idea (example: i would buy Zone of Enders, since i haven't got a chance to play them, and i heard so many great things about it).
Given though, 343 is the only one so far that seems to put a lot of effort in remaking last gen game Halo Anniversary. No other HD has seen that much of overhall in graphics, modes, etc...
When the PS3 did have backward compatibility, correct me if I'm wrong, but the console was expensive and it didn't have a lot to offer in terms of games.
That would be my reason behind the removal of BC.
Have you ever played a ps1 or ps2 game on a ps3 and hdtv? If you had you would know that a sd picture is meant to be viewed on an sd tv.. Otherwise you "blow out" the pixels.. The ps3 has to manually fill in the gaps and the result is a blurry, jagged mess thats worse then the original.. Going back and UpRezing classic games that people love, increasing frame rates, updating textures, adding trophy support and putting multiple titles on one disc is a fan service and one that I am more then happy to pay for..
'Sony's done a great job with looking at their back catalogue and selling those games again'
you guys honestly think that's a compliment?! seriously?
Microsoft reps literally cannot say anything about a rival without it being backhanded in some way, shape or form.
The funny thing is, this is clearly meant to be a quip against Sony from a Microsoft employee. Yet even though Sony are selling older games in a refurbished/repackaged/high value form, they are also offering more quality games than Microsoft, even without the HD remasters.
If Microsoft had confidence in or attempted to nurture most of their IPs, this conversation wouldn't be happening.
well that's essentially what he's saying here. he's saying that Sony are ripping people off by selling them the same game again while simultaneously avoiding the obvious 'real' compliment, which would be to say that Sony have done a great job of providing first party games. it's a snide remark, nothing more.
To each his own but I love the hd remakes.
First a Microsoft rep. Said "hdmi was unnecessary on ps3" then they adopted hdmi 1.2 on later models
Then they said 3d was rubbish because ps3 supports it but Microsoft released a couple 3d games
Now a rep is disparaging Sony because they "upgrade" some older games. Wasn't there a halo remake released a little over a month ago on the xbox?
I'd love to play upgraded games for uncharted, killzone series, gow 3, resistance, and a few others in 4k resolution on a ps4 later on.
I like the xbox 360 but its lacking in the gaming arena at the moment and Sony is delivering a lot of software for the core fans. I'd love if epic/microsoft re-do gears one and improve upon everything making the online trouble free
I could understand the cheap shot if the Remakes were all Sony were putting out - but their first party games are both high in number and quality, something Microsoft can't claim at this point in time.
Seems pointless to take shots for remaking games when you aren't releasing any quality, old or otherwise....
Well Microsoft doesn't really have any games from the Xbox era that they can release in HD. Outside of Halo, which exclusives did it have? It's not a surprise why their stance on HD releases are the way it is. They can't do them because they have no game library to do them with.
Actually, there are some quality games from the original Xbox that could do well as HD remakes. The PS2 obviously had a much bigger library to chose from, but the Xbox had some good games that would be good to play again or for the first time.
Just look at strangers wrath.. Oddly enough it was an xbox exclusive and is now an hd remake exclusively for the ps3.. Irony..
@firelogic
Sadly, MS actually invest in a lot of new IPs last gen, just cause the xbox didn't get much recognition, some of these IPs were tug under the rug. These are actually one of the best games last gen no less, even comparable to a much larger PS2 library.
Halo
Phantom Dust (best game period)
KOTOR
Panza Dragoon Orta
Elder Scroll Morrowind
Otogi
Jetset Radio
Crimson Skies
Conker
Advent Rising
Jade Empire
Fable (lost chapter)
PGR
Phantom Crash
Ninja Gaiden Black
Top Spin
Dead or Alive 3
Almost all games (from original xbox) are BC on x360. Out of the list above, only otogi and advent rising aren't BC. Many of these are low profile games/under the radar too. So practically this is why MS don't bother much with HD remake, because like the guy said, he would be selling the game again to people who already own them.
http://support.xbox.com/en-...
So just because u only know Halo, it doesn't mean they don't have games. MS can really ditch out serious exclusives with some of these IPs for this gen, but they probably not gonna do it.
@Baodeus A lot on that list of yours is third party, If something like Kotor or Morrowind were to be remade, it's up to Bethesda or Lucusarts, not Microsoft, Microsoft only has the jurisdiction over the ones they published, and maybe not even that, they may need to own the IP. If you didn't know Munches Oddessy is getting an HD re-release on PC/PS3 and that was published by MS. A lot of those games on that list MS simply does't have the rights to.
@john Kratos
Yes, MS still funded 3rd party for exclusives Alan Wake, Ninja Blade, Gear of War, etc....It is still their exclusives/or publishing rights. Their approach has been about funding 3rd party instead of buying up a studio for it. Don't know, it might be cheaper that way perhaps?
The publish right might only apply to the old xbox, not x360 therefore u see some HD remade for ps3 also. Probably similar to how MGS/DMC/ZOE, etc...also available on x360 now.
But i can see KTOR/Jade Empire won't be exclusives anymore since EA is involve.
They can still publish/funded sequal to these IPs for x360 though. I don't see why not, if they want to boost their "core" exclusives.
People buy a PS3 for PS3 games. On average, people would prefer to pay less for the console and have no backwards compatibility than pay more to have it because most PS3 owners have a PS2 anyway. Therefore, it was the right choice for Sony to make financially.
They're not forcing people to buy the HD remakes but it is a nice option. Also might I add that not everyone has played all the PS2 games out there and now they get a chance to play popular franchises they missed out on in HD and with trophies. For example, I never played ICO or SOTC until I got the HD remakes.
this GameZone guy likes to praise all the Sony remakes very highly, which may be true, but he acts like they are the only ones have good remakes.
I will be brave and say that Halo CE Anniversary is the best remake so far. The resolution, textures and models were all created from scratch rather than just upscaled like the MGS collection and ICO collection were. And new things were added like skulls that modify gameplay, and terminals that added much more in-depth story information. And you got seven new maps for Reach too as an added bonus, all at the price of 40 bucks. An excellent remake package if there ever was one.
"I [don't] want to get into a world where people felt like I was just trying to sell them things that they've already played."
lol so is that why you push every COD game on your console then? lol W/e Microsoft already make they're customers pay double...once for their internet connection, and once to use their internet connection on Xbox live.
Sony has indeed done a great job with HD remakes, and I really wish Microsoft would do the same and start delivering more remakes of Xbox favorites with added content and Achievements.
Sony has and I expect Microsoft to follow and release some HD remakes. It has turned out to be quite profitable
that really is the sad truth of it. These are relatively cheap to make vs a new IP and they yield nice profits and work as a stop gap while the company is waiting on other big releases to be finished. This isnt just a Sony and MS thing btw.. Konami and Capcom already are falling into this list.
MS has no games from the xbox to release in HD. They're already doing one for Halo. And that's all folks.
"I [don't] want to get into a world where people felt like I was just trying to sell them things that they've already played."
But you have no problem trying to sell them for Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter? Things that are ALL free EVERYWHERE else.
Don't forget paying to play online, and never think that this Online Pass business isn't at least partially a direct result of people's apparent willingness to do that.
and they have no problem making people pay gold subscriptions, even if the gamer just selects "multiplayer" on his game, and tries to play with other people.
that's a real shame.
imagine the 12 yo kid, who just got a x360 for Christmas, along with modern warfare 3, from their parents. the kid inserts the disk, click on "multiplayer", and nothing happens. he starts crying, he can't understand what's going on.
their parents ask their neighbors, who have a 18 yo son, why his son can't play the game with friends.
the neighbors ask "ahhh, if he wants to just play with friends, you need to buy a gold subscription, which costs around 60$.
the 12yo parents say "what ?? you must be kidding. we bought the game new, he only wants to play with is friends, and his cousin already plays MW3 online, on his ps3, and it's totally free"
"it's not fair, to have to pay extra money to ONLY play online with his friends..."
"yes, but since microsoft could make people buy a console that was flawed, which generated Rrod's, after a couple of months, and could make people pay to play online, hopefully microsoft won't ask their customers to suck their d**k, because, people would do it, too, i guess"
@ilovemyps3- Neighbor to 12yo parents- "But at least Microsoft isn't trying to sell you HD remakes like Sony!"/s :0P
That kid gets a one month free Xbox live gold when he opens a new account. This is where your whole fanboyish argument falls apart. Problem solved, no crying required.
He has about one month to try the game before forking his parents to shell out the extra money for a gold account, assuming that he enjoys the game.
It seems to me that people are willing to pay when the feel that the service is worth the money. As you said yourself, they have an alternative to buy the PS3 with the same game. Perhaps the parents feel that the Xbox is more secured...
That MS said such a thing begs the question of why they didn't want the Stranger's Wrath HD remake.
We all hope that all the content we bought from Xbox live and PSN will work since day 1 for the next gen consoles.
Right now Nintendo is looking in a way to make all digital games we bought from Wii console to work or not to work on the next gen, Nintendo WiiU.
Right now I am more interested to see how this will work. Because if you think about it ,Nintendo might lose a lot cash by doing that instead charging again for all the content to work on the WiiU.
The 3DS does not run GBA games but then you can buy it from the Virtual Console store.
Then Sony made some thing similar with Vita by making people to buy a PSP or other PS device compatible to play PSone games.
I have no doubt that sooner or later SOny will let us play PSone games ,on the PSVita, that we already bought from PSN OR they will do like Nintendo just did with the 3DS : making us buy the games all over again.
The real question will be will it upset their fan base or not ? is it not deshonest or greedy ?
What I just said about is what worries me the most on the next gen consoles.
Disc based games from this gen it seems all will work on the next Xbox,PS and WiiU but the real question is if the digital content will also work .
Personally, I loved Halo Anniversary which kind of put shame of what I've been used to in Sony's HD remakes over that past year.
To be honest Shadow of the Colossus felt like a half assed effort. It isn't full 1080p like ICO, it suffers from annoying pop-in, and the framerate in 3d mode is terrible.
Bluepoint games have done excellent remasters compared to the other "remakes". I wouldn't say SoTC was half-assed since they've introduced higher-quality textures and a brand new dynamic lighting system which is non-existant in the originals. If anything, more love effort was placed to these remakes than any other.
If issues were to pop up then it goes to show the game was THAT ADVANCED that it would require a lot more power to get the 1080p quality needed. Even EG, admits the motion-blur and other effects should not EVEN BE POSSIBLE on the PS2. This alone makes me even more excited what they could do this gen.
Dread your comment is 100% irrelevant please move along. No one is saying MS didn't remake any anything to that effect. I know why you got 1 bubble its cuz almost everything you say is Ridiculous.
Dread lets alos add that you just named 3 games NOT MADE BY MS.
I could be wrong but i would say 95% of sony HD remakes are made from SONY STUDIO games. Please catch up
haven't played shadow of the colossus/ICO or the Metal gear solid HD collection...did you now ?
Not to mention the fact that there are people like me who missed most of the PS2 gen. So I missed out on both FF games, Ico collection, Ratchet and Clank, Sly, Jak and Daxter and many more. I never heard of Zone of the enders until they announced a HD remake for the Vita and HD twins.
I'm glad i can play catch up on all these games with better graphics, higher res trophies etc.. without having to get a PS2.
I fall in this category. I was too busy with PC to mess with PS2. I am enjoying playing all of the remakes and actually earning trophies instead of backwards compatibility. They look way better too... PS2 games upscaled look rough.
Sony's HD remakes are like sentimental photos you took in the 80s and early 90s that you love then you get to where we are today and realize there is technology that can enhance and clean up those photos and make those memories more clear and vivid. <3
Oddly, XBLA has a large percentage of its library as old titles... and they're not complaining about the HD collections on the 360 from third parties...
Odd statement to make.
Praise to the website for not taking the "easy hits" title.
i feel like he's being a critic. What about the Halo anniversary Hd remake/port or whatever you wanna call it?
Oh, you mean the one running a brand new game engine on top of the old engine simultaneously? The one with the ability to switch back and forth between the 2 engines with the push of a button? The one that includes gameplay changing skulls, achievements, online coop and 7 MP maps for Halo Reach? Yeah, that is a proper remake.
Ur right it is a great remake but you only got 1 and will probably only get that one.
why??? Because it is a seller in the 10millions and there wasn't much else in terms of exclusives last year so your remake was basically 1 of them to MS.
How about multiple games on one disc for half the cost of a new game? No? Yea sony did that with God of War collection, God of War origins, shadowof the colossus/ico, Sly cooper collection etc..
You might call it a proper remake, but it doesn't mean it's what everybody wants. If I remember correctly, a lot of people wanted to see Halo CE with it's original multiplayer over Live, rather than a map pack of CE maps for Reach.
And people don't necessarily want a fancy graphical overlay. There is a reason Halo Anniversary featured the original graphics.
I'd bet a $40 collection of Halo 1 and 2 with achievements and online multiplayer for each game, minus the fancy new graphics would have been equally as popular as Anniversary.
I don't mind HD remakes I love them and I can't wait for the FFX HD remake. A remake with trophies added scenes to the game and improved texture are great. There is a market for them Sony has found it there are people who can enjoy the game on the PS2 if they still have their old PS2. And if the thing still works after hours of gameplay. Plus with an HD remake some of these games are rare and hard to find in a used game store and the game costs alot of money on E bay and if you do find the game the disc is scratched to hell this is another reason why I like HD remakes. I am surprised there are not more companies jumping on the HD remake like I really want a Shenmue HD remake with 1&2 on a disc. Microsoft tested the waters with an HD remake of Halo personally I thought it looked great since I have never played the first Halo and never owned an older model Xbox. I wouldn't mind if Microsoft did more HD remakes then I can enjoy a library of games I have never played before. Wouldn't mind an HD remake of Halo2.
Not for me thanks, i do not want new version of an old game.
Plus for me the best part of a game is the multiplayer, something older games lack.
tell us something we dont know microsoft. im loving all of these incredible games ive never had the chance to play finally come to ps3 in hd.
I honestly don't see what the big deal is about what he said. and he has a point.
I don't seen anything wrong with halo anniversary, or Ico collection. 2 games just approached differently.
Star Wars:Knight of the Old Republic
Shenmue 2
Jet set radio future
Panzer dragoon orta
Crimson Skies
I dont think they own any of those IPs, so remaking them wouldnt be their choice
i enjoy when they compliment each other, but when they say how this is better than theirs stuff like that it ticks me off idk why
This makes me mad. Microsoft own Rare, which has developed some great Nintendo 64 games. Why have they only remade a handful of 'em? Surely Nintendo do not own all of the rights for every single Rare game developed.
There is money to be made here, but these idiots have forced Rare into making shit that nobody cares about. Such a waste of a great company. And yes, I prefer Microsoft > Sony and I am mad at what they are doing.
As for HD remakes, I just got my copy of Splinter Cell Trilogy (PS3) and I am waiting for Jak & Daxter. At least Sony know how to do a remake and keep fans/potential fans excited.
Completely different interpretation of the interview lol http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...
We live in a society of consumers (sheeps/sheeple) so of course HD remakes would do well. For a few extra pixels, polygons and textures you'd re-purchase a game you've already played? really!? It seems like there is no hope left in humanity at all.
We hate our governments yet we're still doing nothing but consuming and we have literally been consumed in our own consumerism. Big companies like Sony don't even refer to us as customers or people any more, many companies in their conferences have now literally labeled us as "The consumers".
It's really sad when you think about it or if you even care, S.O.P.A pft! people have lost a lot more than just the ability to share.
Such a ridiculous post. People are sheep because they want to replay their favorite games in HD?
ICO/SOTC in Stereoscopic 3D was amazing. The best use of 3d in ANY game released IMO. Also, don't forget that many gamers are new to this generation, and this gives them a chance to experience these classics that otherwise can be difficult to obtain.
Your whole rant on consumerism and SOPA has nothing to do with this. Get off your horse.
I don't understand why idiots complaining about current PS3 not having BC. I bought my PS3 CECHA01 phat for $700. It is $700 for a reason, and it still works. If you wanted BC SOOOO Bad, pay for it. A PS2 is what? $99 bucks? Now you buy the PS3 slim for $250 for a reason too. It is slim because it doesn't have all the extra meat.
I think it is a awesome idea from sony, I never got to ICO and SOTR, now with the hd remakes I will get to play them in HD and trophies... Another tick to the sony brand in my books
The difference is Sony releases hd versions of games while at the same time making new I.P.'s
How about focising on your 2012 games, it's not looking good right now.
ya hd remakes do piss me off somewhat, because they arent remakes. They are 99% just the old game rendered at higher res. It would be like calling pc versions 1080p remakes.
It's great to see microsoft complimenting the rival. more indication that this generation is rapping up and ms is letting Sony now it was a good game. lol. Now on the where's microsofts remakes, well Microsoft doesn't have as long of a history as Sony has in gaming, or as many exclusives from last gen to remake so there is no way anyone should expect them to match Sony in HD remakes. The Halo remake was a great choice and there is a few others they could remake but not as many as Sony. Microsoft did pretty good this gen with exclusives so maybe in the future we will see quad HD Remakes of games like Alan Wake, Gears of War, and Halo Reach( love that game).
Nice to read a compliment between competitors.
I think that not only have Sony done it to make a bit of money but most of these remakes coincide with the release of a new entry into these franchises, some haven't done that but others indeed have which is a good way to get people interested in the new games immersed in the franchise and a good way to make a quick buck since these HD remakes don't take much to do.
A shame MS aren't doing something similar but it's not really a big deal tbh, I didn't mind BC being removed from the PS3 because I bought a PS3 to play next gen games, not old PS2 games. I'd imagine most 360 owners feel the same way.
Although I do love some of these HD remakes and the prospect of others. I'd really love HD remakes of Devil May Cry and the Onimusha games.
This is actually the first positive response MS have said bout SONY. Truly shock by it. and can't wait for more HD REMAKES
MS just being bitter that they don't have nearly as many great exclusives to give the HD remake treatment to...
probbly bitter over that "extra buck" Sony found out they could make by doing it... MS wishes they could too! lol
Agreed, the only IPs I can think of from last gen that they own (apart from Halo which theyve already milked) are Blinx, Mechassault, Conker, and Grabbed by the Ghoulies.
Probably a few more, but very few that people would buy again in HD.
This is just an attempt to hide the fact the original Xbox didn't have many great games. The only other game I can think of is fable...
The PS1 discs of Final Fantasy 7 can be played on any PS3 at all, (PS1 is still backwards compatible) it can also be easily found on PSN for downloaded yet there is huge demand for a remake.
Of course people want HD upgrades of games, it's not just the graphics that get overhauled but also bugs get fixed, sound effects and voice overs get redone and special features are sometimes added.
"I [don't] want to get into a world where people felt like I was just trying to sell them things that they've already played."
I guess he isn't aware, not all of us could afford every friggen PS2 game back then. And why is he so concerned with how people spend their money? If they want to buy remakes, that's their own damn choice.
I have to admit the halo remake is very awesome switching between old and new graphics on the fly very impressive a true hd remake not a high rez filter, i think alot of devs are just riding past glory.
SO WE CANT GET THESE FRANCHISES BACK THIS GEN??
Mechassualt
Crimson Skies
Blinx
Project Gotham Racing
Phantom Dust
Whacked
Tao Feng
Midtown Madness 3
Jade Empire
Microsoft boys silly as always. It seems a suit and a position at their company doesn't make you grow up.
Oh please, they're praising them for Sony's HD remakes? They're JUST HD remakes for crying out loud.
For the love of god, why make PS3 controllers that are CLEARLY Xbox controllers...
