Really depends on the game. Certain games on PSN are more lively with people who have mics than others. I found more people in KZ3 with mics than COD. In general though I find people on XBL with more mics and why wouldn't there be as they come bundled with every system.

Alot of people just like to play where as some play specifically to chat with friends from work, family, school.

Why would you want to talk to total strangers on mic anyway?

I only use mic with people i don't know when i play team based tctical games like MAG, Warhawk, socom, etc.

You'd be suprised how coordinating with your team really changes the outcome of battles.

Game like cod how ever, who really cares! Run, gun, kill streak... DONE!

a lot of PS3 online games have different options for voice chat...and you sometimes have to change settings either in the game or in the xmb to hear people if you are not using a mic...

killzone 2 was always that way...if you didn't set the output device to your tv or stereo, you could not hear anyone talking unless you had your mic on...was kind of nice imo, as its like an auto mute if you didn't feel like using your mic for whatever reason...and I can't think of anyone that would prefer to hear someone's voice jumbled in with the game audio...as it sounds like shit...

I usually don't bother with my mic. If I'm playing and there's actually someone to talk with, or people looking to use a little strategy I'll pull the mic out, but I find that doesn't happen all the often. It's certainly more helpful in KZ then it is in COD. COD, in my experience, might as well not have mics. Everyone's yelling, playing music or just generally being asses - I have yet to play a game of COD where someone actually used their mic to coordinate with the team.

So true, when I was playing Socom I noticed a lot of mics as well.

But people do have mics, think of how many have blutooth headsets. Those headsets are mics for PS3 users.

The difference is, on PSN I was never kicked for not having a mic (which I do have one). Whereas I've seen people kicked on games like Left for Dead because they did not have a mic plugged in. It really depends on the game like you said.

Socom confrontation 95% of people had mics. Because its a very tactical team orientated game. Iv been kicked from a few games cuz i didn't feel like turning my mic on.

Left for Dead is probably the worst about kicking people out..u pretty much have to have a mic on that game to play at all.

I just started playing socom 4 and sometimes in a match of 32 only like 3 people have mics. In the more hardcore modes more people probably use them but i was suprised by how little people used them in a tactical game. Some games are better though but ive noticed on psn its a crap shoot if you dont have a clan or a lot of people in your friends list. On my way to socom 4 right now.

I dont get how people could play a team game without a mic though, Its not really fun imo. To each there own though.

You don't really need alot of team work in it since its a lot easier to kill people now. Try playing confrontation..the game play is way different. The graphics arent as good but i prefer confrontation to socom 4.

100% agree. The only time I will turn my mic on is if a friend is in the game. But even then, with no party feature, we have to listen to all the idiots in the lobby. I pretty much just call my friend and put him on speaker phone and we talk that way.

However, enter a game like Socom and they're very harsh on you. I remember on Confrontation where I had to have a mic in or else I would get kicked. Personally, I think you should be allowed to play which ever way you want.

Plenty of people on PSN have mics. Just because everyone is not talking doesn't mean no one has a mic. Also when I'm playing Black Ops on Live, no one talks. Only time you hear people talking is in a SnD game, other than that it's quiet most of the time. Everyone else is basically in party chat.

i got a mic. all of my friends i went to high school with have them aswell. i just dont use my mic unless im playing with them. typically if im playing in a game with strangers the mics off. this article states the truth. there was even this one time i had my mic on in a room of strangers and i started teaming up with another player sticking by his side, talking to him and strategizing and low and behold, a few minutes into it his mic turned on. and that was in 2009!

I'd say less then 50% of PSN users have mics and less then that actually use them. Sony should have included a mic with the PS3. You can really tell they just kind of went with things as they developed when it came to PSN.

You can tell they don't have a mic when there is no icon next to their name. I'm sure some don't have them plugged in, but the majority just don't have them.

My friends and I always joke around if we come up in a room on XBL with some no mic people, we say it looks like PSN up in here, always gets a laugh.

I refuse to believe gamer's from two separate consoles even on the same game, would play so differently. How do you communicate if you don't have a mic? or if you don't use it?

I know on XBL you can always communicate with teammates....but then I also noticed how much better the voice chat codecs are on the Xbox 360, things are so much clearer, so maybe that is the real issue.

Nobody that had a mic would constantly not use it. Games would be so much less fun without communication and team work. One of the main reasons I stopped playing games on PSN was the terrible quality of the voice chat and the overall lack of people using headsets. How can you talk to or recruit players for a competitive team if nobody can freaking talk?

I think the fact that you cant plug headsets in the controllers is also a factor, a lot of people have their TV's pretty far back and cords aren't long enough.

I have TWO mics. One official PS3 bluetooth, and one Turtle Beach PX21 DSS headset. Do I use them often? Nope - I only use a mic when I'm playing certain games.

The quality is more dependant on the mic on PSN, all my friends have mics, and they are all crystal clear...they bought decent mics.

Clearly you don't use XBL then, because everyone communicates with headsets there. Cords I think was reference to USB or high end gaming headsets like Turtle Beaches. You have to actually plug those into the game console itself.

I can also vouch for the suspect voice chat quality on PSN, sometimes when you do run into people with headsets it's hard to understand them, they can sound like a drive through McDonald's guy.

Problem with that "point" is that MOST users use BT headsets. So the point is nearly moot.

Add to that the fact that anybody who is hardcore enough to buy a gaming headset wouldn't let a thing like cord length stop them from using their mics and the whole cords issue is null and void.

So basically you are saying everyone on the PS3 chooses not to communicate while playing a team based game because they are more mature?

Team based games are 100% better with proper communication. Playing with a group of friends that aren't complete ass-hats is nice too. It's much easier to contact and play with friends over Live due to the fact communication is built into the backbone of every game. You can fire up your system, pull up your friends list and contact each of them no matter what they are doing. Coordination is simple and effortless.

The PS3's communication dates back to the 90's. You can call your friends up on the phone and coordinate with them there. If you didn't have your headset on before the game launches, you can go back to the XMB and hope for the best. Sound quality is hit or miss no matter how much you spent on your headset.

Here is a fact that isn't made up, more people use headsets on the 360 because it's easier and more fun. It's built into the system from day one and not game dependant. Anyone that wants to argue PS3's comms are better or even as good is just an idiot that doesn't know better or is in denial.

i used to play unrealtournament on the pc with my friends and the only time you want to use a mic, is when you are in a team match so you can communicate with your friends where you are ect ect, when you play online by yourself you dont want to hear others talking while you are playing, it is distracting and very annoying hearing young kids/adults swearing or playing annoying music, imo you should be able to turn off the mics of other players so that they cannot annoy you when you play in all games.

The technology used for the wireless Bluetooth format is standard. The Mic itself is an option. If you already own one from your cell, you can save a couple bucks.

The 360 comes with a mic in the box as a standard accessory. You can also buy an optional wireless mic that uses the standard wireless technology that is built in.

You can plug just about any cell phone hands free headset that uses a 3.5mm jack into your controller. Last I seen that was pretty standard. Maybe a little fyi is also needed to clear up USB, the Xbox 360 also uses USB headsets. How do you think the TurtleBeach universal USB headsets work on both systems?

Your point is moot at best. You are claiming using USB and Bluetooth accessories is better than packing a headset in the box. This is bad logic even for you.

Unless it's co-op, no one cares, not a single "team based game" have ever been won or lost on using a mic because, unless it's some elite clan, the communication basically boils down to meaningless exclaimations and not a single thing that helps the team.

People put too much weight into communications in games, especially when cross game chat is so popular for 360... that's going to be useful for playing online, eyes rolling in a hugely sarcastic fashion.

I can play Squad DM on BC2 with the same three guys on my team, versus three teams with the same individuals on the same maps five times in a row (assuming such an anomaly would ever happen). These other three guys and I use our mics for the duration of the match; if one of us goes silent, it throws off our gameplay significantly. If we played four of those matches with mics on, and played one match with the mics off, our chances of losing that one match are insanely high(not saying much, since we win about 19 out of 20, anyway).

Did the same thing in Uncharted and Killzone. We won because of our teamwork, or lost because of a lack thereof.

I've got a mic but it never gets any use these days. I'd much rather boot up Skype or Teamspeak on my phone and have a chat with much better quality than that what's on the official headset.

Also it works as a kind of cross game chat, even cross platform chat :)

I tried the sony bluetooth mic and I just found it to be too distracting during gameplay, so I returned it back to the store of where I bought it from a day or two after I bought it.

Before then for the most part on most occasions I found people that used it(especially young kids) to be annoying(Thank GOD for the "mute user" option, the best online feature imo). So for me it is a useless add-on/feature to have, because I want to play games rather than yap during games.

Dumb article. I've actually not heard the mic problem in over a year. Their is a reason for that too. Yes people have mics on psn, and yes they don't talk to people usually. On XBL since the party chats, you don't get very many people talking either. A lot more people have mics on XBL but a lot of people is in a party chat, unplugs there mics, or mutes people. Party chats have taken over because you don't have to deal with annoying people. PSN on the other hand, since mics dont come with the ps3, a lot of people really dont have mics. It's fact, so this article is dumb. I own PS3 and 360. Love them both.

I have joined games many of times and no one was speaking... By simply asking folks to turn on mic and start communicating you get alot of ppl joining in...

COD is really the only game I played where it will either be crickets for a whole match... Or everybody talking bout stuff unrelated to the match their currently playing...

Arbitrally throwing in a cheap headset in the package simply because 360 does it would be a waste...

I think the majority of PSN users have a mic. I have 2 Official PS3 mikes but if I play with strangers I don't use it. Only using a mike if I play with friends. Otherwise I mute everyone.
