Forbes: Why Major League Gaming Is Thriving While Pro Sports Are Struggling

Even before the lockout, attendance was down for the NBA. And Major League Baseball parks continue to struggle to attract fans. The days of sold-out NASCAR tracks throughout the season are over. But while many professional sports have suffered amidst the poor economy, pro video game players continue to cultivate the growing number of gamers who are tuning in for every event of the Major League Gaming (MLG) pro circuit.

Im a big fan of MLG, and im glad to see it expanding as rapidly as it is. Keep in mind this league was created less than a decade ago.

I bet our kids will be all talking up MLG one day.

clrlite4702d ago

I would rather play a video game then watch sports personally. I don't watch Major League Gaming though.

omi25p4702d ago

There is less money involved and everyone can try

KwietStorm_BLM4702d ago

Exactly. There isn't any big secret. I don't know how this would even be brought up. I obviously love gaming since I'm on this godforsaken site, but there is a LOT more at stake in pro sports.

OC_MurphysLaw4702d ago

LOL...this is comical. MLG is not anywhere near the level of real pro-sports.

Impaler4702d ago (Edited 4702d ago )

Forbes also forgets to mention that MLG was out of money and needed a sponsor and that is the only reason why the PS3 is being used for Black OPS, not to mention it pissed off a shit ton of the community because they are all Xbots.

MLG has Halo, that is it. It is trying with SCII and that is going somewhere, but pro gaming will never take off in America like it has in Korea(which everyone is trying for) or Europe.

That is just the way our society is built.

KwietStorm_BLM4702d ago

If EVO became more of a seasonal thing, I'm sure it would do well.

Black ops 4, because it was the last cod of duty I was able to dominate with a +2 k/d ratio. Before all the freaking cheating started to happen. It was nice catching people off guard and shooting at them first and getting the kill. Unlike now, where I shoot people first, but they gun me down with less hits, less time, literally feels like they can kill me in a split second. At times, they are able to run away after me shooting them way more than necessary, yet, the second I'm spotted, I'm dead, there's no me running away to cover. They can do cartwheels, summersaults, backflips and gun you down perfectly. They can shoot you across the map with perfect accuracy. They can jump around like morons and gun you down without even having to correct their aim. They have superman split second perfect reactions. That's the best way to describe it, everything they do is spot on perfect. They can spam and spray (no praying) their gun from far away, because they have no recoil or bullet spread. It always feels like I have to aim and also correct my aim when moving around, while these pricks don't have to do the same.

And yes, I know how to play fps games. I dominated many fps games like: Resistance 1&2, kz 2&3, Socom, MAG, Crysis, Gotham City Impostors, blitz brigade etc. all with 2-4 k/d ratio. Kz2 (lag input controls) and resistance (no aim assist in resistance) being the hardest and were the games I reached either close to a 3 k/d ratio or above.

I truly got to enjoy blacks ops 4 and got my money's worth out of it. Afterwords, I would either stop playing cod games after a while, because of the cheating, or would skip buying cod games for a year or two before buying another.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris217d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster217d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris217d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT217d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster217d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

Extermin8or3_217d ago

This right here is the fucking problem.
