Super Smash Bros. Creator has 'no time' to make Wii U version

During its E3 2011 press conference, Nintendo revealed that it was working on a new Smash Bros. for both Wii U and 3DS.

Series creator Masahiro Sakurai has since come out and said that games 'shouldn't have been publicly announced' seeing as though development hasn't even begun.

I agree with him. I guess Nintendo only did it to create hype since they didn't have anything amazing to announce for it. I'm gonna wait, like I am with the 3DS, till good games start coming out for it before I bother with it.

DA_SHREDDER4837d ago

Well theirs obviously an insatiable desire for these games and it makes me wonder whats really goin on? Either Kid Icarus better be the next best thing to God of War or Nintendon't know what they even wanna do with themselves.

KingDustero4837d ago

True. I was actually a little hyped for the Wii U when I heard that a new SSB was for sure. However it sounds like it'll be at LEAST three years before it comes out. By that time the PS4 will be out and I'll be investing mostly in that.

I'm not fully sold on the Wii U anyways. If Nintendo can actually make a well balanced and working online with SSB I'll most likely get it. By the time it comes out the Wii U will probably have a price drop anyways.

It just isn't a smart decision to announce a game that isn't even in development yet.

AWBrawler4836d ago

Nintendo knows they'll have a Smash Bros. for every gen,so they went ahead and announced it. Hell Square Enix annonuced a DragonQuest X for Wii that I'm convinced will never surface.

And as far as Kid Icarus goes, the game is looking beastly. I can't wait!! It's the main reason I got a 3DS. Been waiting since i first played the GB sequel in 94 to get a part 3.

ChickeyCantor4837d ago

HA...he pretends its not gonna happen xD

mastiffchild4837d ago

Ho do you make that out? I think he's just a bit miffed that they announced something that dons't really even exist yet because he obviously likes to do a lot of the groundwork himself for what is, naturally, one of Ninty's best loved series and most complex, in terms of balance, games in existence.

If he hasn't even got th team to MAKE the games yet he's bound to be a bit jittery but falls a long way short of pretending it'll never happen. No, he's just pissed off that they announced something that hasn't even begun properly yet-and from a gamer's POV isn't that fair enough? I think it is and would imagine most gamers would like it if devs showed a bit more respect for us and didn't get hopes up for things until they KNEW when they could be promised to us.

ChickeyCantor4837d ago (Edited 4837d ago )

Iwata actually said on stage that it isnt the right time to go into details. He only stated that the developer was working on something. This could be a the design document, concept, whatever he wants to pitch. Doesn't have to be actual development.

There are already previous statements by Masahiro Sakurai where the next smash bros will probably be for the next N-console.
Im pretty sure there is a new smash coming. So yeah he is basically pretending its not gonna happen eventually.

Its one of his best selling franchises, not making a new game would be insane.

Iwata didn't really promise anything, he said that there is an idea going on. Just watch the presentation again. It was too early to give it a concrete definition.
You took it as a promise, which is your own doing.

Now where is F-zero >=(

edit:
The key purpose of the presentation was clear: The controller. Iwata then further confirmed that 3DS and WiiU will add extra connectivity.
I think people are rather confused xD

jonboi244837d ago

oh god nintendo better no rush this game or get someone else other than sakurai to make it then. if nintendo forced the 3ds and wii u connectivity and if it wasn't originally part of sakurai's plan, then man will he be under a lot of pressure to get it working properly and make it somewhat ground breaking. nintendo literally jumped the gun on this. i've questioned a lot on how they revealed the wii u. its just all really confusing.

ChickeyCantor4837d ago

Meh,
Iwata just confirmed 3DS and WiiU connectivity...he just needed to put it in context.
Eventually they can say: "It didnt work out".

LoaMcLoa4836d ago

3DS better not be the lead version :C

mike1up4836d ago (Edited 4836d ago )

How have they not even STARTED on Wii U Smash Bros.???
Brawl came out in early 2008!!!

Ye, Custom Robo Arena was a lot better than Pokemon anyways, now that's a game.

Eonjay16h ago

Interestingly this comes like a day after they announced they would be at the Tokyo Games Show.

Vits15h ago

We should all really hope so. Otherwise, this could lead to many issues, as they hold patents on numerous game mechanics. And when I say numerous, I truly mean it. Take this one, for example:

"Abstract: In an example of a game program, a ground boarding target object or an air boarding target object is selected by a selection operation, and a player character is caused to board the selected boarding target object. If the player character aboard the air boarding target object moves toward the ground, the player character is automatically changed to the state where the player character is aboard the ground boarding target object, and brought into the state where the player character can move on the ground."

In plain English, do you guys remember that super amazing mechanic where you surf on the water with a Pokémon, and then when you hit land, it changes to you walking? Yeah, they patented that.

porkChop1d 2h ago

A patent lawsuit? What Pokémon-related patent could Palworld even be infringing that other similar games haven't? This makes no sense. Feels like Nintendo just trying to throw its weight around to bully competitors, just like they do with emulators even though they're legal.

Kaii1d 2h ago

They can't Innovate their own IP, but when others are breaking the ceiling, they run to the courts, gtfo Nintendo/Gamefreak.

Companies' gatekeeping mechanics behind the patent system to stifle innovation, consumers will always pick the better product, it's not the consumer's fault that Gamefreak has sat on their lazy assess for years.

Kornholic18h ago

"Consumers will always pick the better product"

Since when?

swedishMeatwad6h ago

You can't argue with _subjective_ taste. Some people are going to like games you find crappy. I'm happy not everyone has the same taste.

The_Blue13h ago

Rather you like it or not COD has many accessible options and customization that allows for better experience than most other FPS.

The Palworld has been out since January of 2024 and now Nintendo finally decides to do something. I fail to see how Palworld is like Pokemon besides evolving monsters. There are other games out there as well where you can capture and level up monsters. Tales of Symphonia 2 does that capture monsters and have them fight with you and they evolve when levelling up. The two games might share some similarities but what game doesn't borrow from another game. I could understand if Palworld was just a straight on copy clone of Pokemon but it's not. Nintendo is starting to become a pain in the ass. Going full gung ho with rom sites that I can see, purposely taking down pictures from a strategy guide for Mario 64 the strategy guide never came to North America and Nintendo had the pictures taken down. Where does it every stop with Nintendo?

babadivad16h ago

Monsters don't evolve in Palworld

Software_Lover12h ago

It's because Palworld became a worldwide viral success. Nintendo can't fathom someone else being that popular when it comes to a small monster catching game.

VersusDMC12h ago

Nintendo is only acting now because they just finished a lawsuit which they won.

https://www.nintendolife.co...

Atlus should get on this and sue Nintendo as SMT came out before Pokemon. If Nintendo is going to play this game.

isarai18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

This feels like a scare tactic more than anything else. There's nothing here dozens of other games haven't already done, they're just mad this game showed people how much the pokemon series has been slackin and are desperately trying to make an example out of them.

How's about instead of spending all that money on court fees and lawyers you invest it into making pokémon better?

Profchaos17h ago

I think if it was a scare tactic it would have happened when the game came out I have a feeling they've been building a case for a while

isarai17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

It did happen even before the game came out, they tried several tomes before and nothing came of it

Profchaos16h ago

I was pretty sure the only statement they made was they would investigate

Sakurai And Team Asobi Exchange Pleasantries Over Astro Bot

Since its launch on 6th September 2024, PS5's Astro Bot has been making waves in the gaming community thanks to its high quality and ingenuity. By taking heavy inspiration from Nintendo (and specifically the Super Mario franchise), developer Team Asobi has undoubtedly crafted one of the finest platformers in recent memory.

One individual who has been spending time with the game is none other than Masahiro Sakurai, the legendary creator behind the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. franchises.

"Team Asobi has undoubtedly crafted one of the finest platformers ever."

Fixed that for you.

fr0sty5d ago

Yes, it said finest platformers in recent memory... this game is easily one of the best ever, right up there with the Nintendo greats.

Chocoburger6d ago

Sakurai is awesome, and I like how even though he's contracted to work for Nintendo, he still acknowledges and plays games from other companies and platforms.

If Square Enix & Nintendo are his hometown what does that make Xbox?

The red light district, where games go to w**** themselves for Gamepass cash.

Asterphoenix12d ago

Well Nintendo and Squaresoft is where he started. I totally understand why he doesn't want to do FF now. If so I'm happy for either a remaster of Last Story or a new entry/spiritual successor. Loved the battle system of Last Story.

porkChop12d ago

I just really want a new Lost Odyssey, or even a proper remaster with some QoL updates. Though I'd also love to see him work with Square on a new IP.

Profchaos12d ago

That's about as good as a confirmation that we will see ports to the switch2

Knightofelemia12d ago

Wish my parents bought me a NES as a kid I would have played the first FF game. But I was lucky to have a SNES I played a bit of FF6 and just went to Chrono Trigger. When the FF collection releases I-VI Collection Anniversary drops I will take my time to play each Final Fantasy.

Deathdeliverer11d ago

I mean… this is kinda obvious. The original final fantasy and its early sequels were on…
