GamesEyeView: Killzone 3 Review

GEV says: War has evolved. What used to be the mashing of two buttons while watching blocks of pixels run into each other, has now been transformed into photorealistic gesture based skirmishes all popping out of the foreground to nail you in the head with a grenade. Welcome to Killzone 3!

Killzone 3 is the first game for the Playstation 3 that makes use of all the new toys Sony has implemented into their console. The game is 3D ready, sporting 7.1 digital sound, and can be played entirely with the Playstation Move controller (with optional sharpshooter attachment). So how does this compare with the other endless horde of first person shooters out today? Pretty decently.

"Killzone 3 uses the Playstation Move controller, coupled with the new Playstation Sharpshooter. While fun, and certainly a new way to play your games, this isn’t changing how we play games just yet."

"While we were excited by the prospect of using motion controls in the game, they do still come off somewhat gimmicky."

I say the author didn't try at any length to use the Move controller or customize the specs. Because once you get used to the Move controls, you can become a wrecking machine of death. This is coming from someone who could never get the hang of console FPS's.

cochise3134840d ago

Oh yeah. I'm deadly right now with the sharpshooter.

Silly Mammo4840d ago

edit: So many disagrees. I wonder, are they from people that tried using the Move and didn't like it or just trolls?

StbI9904840d ago

Ignore them, maybe bots or nayer doing their stuff.

Biggest4840d ago

I'd like to know about the balance issues that everyone is talking about. I remember how overpowered Assault was in Killzone 2, and I am trying to find ANY job in Killzone 3 that is even in the ballpark.

RatherHavaBigGirl4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

well one good example is the marksman class. its so cheap i refuse to use it(used it once) but too bad the majority of the kz3 community doesnt feel that way as most players use it. i should post videos of me sneaking up on the enemy and about 3/5 of them are using it onscreen. i used it once to see how easy it is to get cheap kills with it and i tell you what, it was so easy it wasnt even a game anymore. no challenge. if you dont see the problem with cloaking combined with an assault rifle, restricted to only one class, then you are in denial. denial wont help developers get better itll just enable them to make more mistakes. so, to all you fanboys, do you want a better game or not?

me, im a grownass man who is loyal to no brand. it is what it is and if i see a flaw in a game i spent my $65 for ill point it out so the devs can atleast patch it, learn from their mistakes and do a better job next time. as the consumer im supposed to do that

edit: disagree if you will but you know im right. if not then explain why. should i just stick my head in the virtual sand and ignore issues while only praising the good parts?

thekiddfran4840d ago

@ ratherhaveabigGirl. I totally get where you are coming from but i play as a tactician, always have and always will. Its easy to smoke the marksman out of their position. I always find them easy

Spitfire_Riggz4840d ago

Yup got the platinum its on craigslist now. Gonna buy a real multiplayer game Socom 4

cochise3134840d ago

Lol this is a bogus ass review. Anyone who's played this game knows it's one of the best console fps's, hands down.

LoaMcLoa4840d ago

Don't wanna burst your bubble, but Killzone 2 was waaaay better

HeavenlySnipes4840d ago

but like he said, KZ3 is ONE of the BEST console FPS's. KZ2 is the best I've played, KZ3 is a close second. A few more gameplay patches (KZ2 had many patches guys) and the game will be tied with KZ2.

B00M4840d ago

Wasn't disagreeing, just wanted to know his actual reasons. I loved both, but prefer Killzone 3 due to the improved controls and wider ranges of settings.

B00M: Better controls, dedicated servers, more balanced multiplayer and a better story

dazreah4840d ago

I can't but i can name loads with better gameplay.

awiseman4840d ago

Better gemeplay On console:

Homefront

Halo: Reach <<<< Waayyy better

Resistance

Socom

Come tuesday...Crysis 2

BAD COMPANY 1,2 and soon 3

You Killzone fanboys are delarious is hilarious

Nightshade3864840d ago

I'm not sure "delarious" is a real word....

Obvious troll is obvious.

Rageanitus4840d ago

wtf is up with the mentin of the story...! geez xbox fanboys love to point of negative aspects yet if you look at the halo the story is really not that much better.

Technically the game is MUCH more cinematic that Reach..... but hey what can I say.

Nightshade3864840d ago

Just because you disagree with is opinion doesn't make him a fanboy of one console or the other. You're making assumptions about his opinion about a game that's not even mentioned in the review (Halo: Reach). Maybe he thought that had a mediocre story as well.

Rageanitus4840d ago

my point is there are alot of reviews conveniently bring up the story argument like they were expecting a story just to show somethign negative. Its no surprise that you see alot of these same review sites who reviewed Halo reach Never brought up the idea of Story being a negative thing

Nightshade3864840d ago

Different sites have different reviewers. Different writers have different things that they base their overall opinions on. Or they may have a different view of which story is better than you do. In either case, assuming that someone is a fanboy because you disagree is pointless.

We gave Halo: Reach a higher score than Killzone 3, but both games had different reviewers. We stand by both reviews.

Rageanitus4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

I guess you dont get what Im trying to point out....

I agree that different reviewers have a different opinions but it just seems alot of these reviewers are bringing up negative facts JUST to downplay the game.....

Its like a person reviewing a car i.e. a Ferrari bashing it because it cant transport cargo like standard hatchback.

Honestly did we really expect KZ to have a story ... yet the reviewers loved to bring up that point

Nightshade3864840d ago

Whether or not it matters to you, if the story is a negative it deserves to be brought up just like all relevant information. Would you be equally dismissive of complaints of bad gameplay in an RPG?

wages of sin4840d ago (Edited 4840d ago )

You're joking right?

Halo's story and universe are WAY deeper than that of KZ. And yes, I've read the whole backstory for KZ online. I enjoy KZ3 as I did KZ2 but KZ3 is not as good as any of the Halo games. The only real thing it has going for it are the graphics.

Even if you don't read the Halo novels (which are excellent I might add) the story told within the games is just better. The characters are memorable and you care about what it is they're going thru. It may not be the opinion of everyone but for me, KZ is good but not even close.

psn: BookofJob

@Rageanitus,

Notice how I said "even if you haven't read the novels." That means that even without the books the story is deeper, better and more involved. You can have your preferences and I'll have mine. I own both series so I'm not at a loss at all.

And as far as the Starcraft books go, I haven't read them so I can't compare but I do know for a fact that the Halo novels are very deep and detailed. The latest book Halo: Cryptum goes back 10,000 years and tells an amazing story. But you've already shown that you're on the watch for "xbox fanboys" so I'm waisting my time.

Rageanitus4840d ago

the real question is are we reviwing a novels or a game story from the game itself?

I gues we should start reviewing starcraft and warcraft based on their novels included in the Blizzard universe.

P_Bomb4840d ago

KZ3 > KZ2 for me. Single player has much more variety and replayability. There's only 3 levels I replay in KZ2, the bridge, the train and Pyrrhus.

MP I actually enjoy Warzone much more in KZ3, which is KZ's signature mode. I can play deathmatch in anything, preferred Bodycount in KZ2, but I've had my best games in Warzone in this one.

No way this deserves a lower average than Resistance 1 (a launch title) and Resistance 2 (a generally unappealing online apart from co-op).

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor404d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar404d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg404d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149403d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138404d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim404d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC404d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138404d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle404d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76404d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730404d ago (Edited 404d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger404d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca404d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy404d ago (Edited 404d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

potatoseal404d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright404d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1155d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1155d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1155d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1155d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1155d ago
Vegamyster1155d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1155d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1155d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1154d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1155d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip

Top 10 PS3 Games We Hope Come Back On PS5

While Xbox has committed to backwards compatibility spanning four generations, PlayStation has continued their stance that the feature isn't important. Well, it is! I'm hoping these PlayStation 3 classics that skipped the PS4 entirely show up again on the PS5 for everyone to enjoy.

Resistance, Dead Space franchise, Splatterhouse, Lollipop Chainsaw, Brutal Legends, Alice Madness Returns, Enslaved Journey to the West, Mass Effect franchise. Also wouldn't mind seeing a new Wild Arms game remake or HD remaster, the Xenosaga trilogy, a new Parasite Eve, a new Dino Crisis just too many games to list that are forgotten and left in the dark now adays.

Sciurus_vulgaris1333d ago

The PS3 is difficult to emulate. PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 would require translation from PowerPC to x86. Additionally the PS5 likely would have to mimic the PS3’s GPU and CPU.

This is what pops up on my web browser. So I can't even read the site. So, forget that. They don't need my data.

But let's get something straight. OG Xbox had around 1,001 games. How many are BC on Series X? **39** THIRTY NINE. Come on! That's wack BC. You can't tell me that's a complete list. Talking about commitment. Game preservation. Ridiculous. Covers nothing.

How many games released on Xbox 360? Around 2085. How many are BC?
568. That's it. Around 1,517 are **MISSING** Stop playing. Tired of that nonsense.

Anyway, the only games I really want from PS3 that would be awesome are Motorstorm and MGS4. I'll take BC. I'll take a remaster. I'll take a remake. If not those, then Killzone 2. And in VR, maybe Sports Champions, House of the Dead Overkill and the Time Crisis games.

That's all I need. But we've gone over BC again and again in every possible way. It wasn't that important because Sony sold 115 million consoles without it. That's proof enough with no outcry. And PS5 has damn near all 4,000+ PS4 games BC. It's not PS1,PS2 and PS3. But that's plenty. I'll take more but you get what you get.
