Dragon Age 2 Fails to Consider Standard-Definition TV Owners

Dragon Age 2 doesn't display properly on SDTVs. Should people still expect it to?

gorebago4945d ago

i believe when dead rising was released in 2006, many people complained about the small text. i also remember the creator of that game rightiously pointing out that why would you own a "next"-gen console w/o an hdtv.

with hdtvs being so cheap now when compared to how they were five years ago, maybe it's time to upgrade.

i've been broke for so many years but i've managed to be able to own two hdtvs and one widescreen monitor so.....

Myst4945d ago

I was actually told the same thing for Rock Band 3 by some of the people on the site lol.

RockmanII74944d ago

lol Bioware must hate Standard Definition, they had a similar problem with Mass Effect 2

If you can afford to buy an HD console then you should have a HDTV. If you cry about not being able to afford the HDTV then you should not have spent hundreds of dollars on a console because obviously you're not financially stable enough to wasting money on such luxuries.

I keep seeing people write every once in a while about scraping by to make rent, buy food, or pay other bills then you see them talk about owning these few hundred dollar game consoles or PCs. Then they'll have an I-phone, every known TV package from some cable company with the highest speed internet then they'll complain they can't afford to feed their family or pay rent but yet they can pay for cable and internet. Such stupidity that people will starve themselves or plunge themselves in debt just to be connected to the internet rather from a home connection, mobile, or both.

So if you are complaining about an HD console game not playing good enough on your SDTV because you can't afford a new TV then it sounds like you should have never bought that HD console and need to get yourself in a more financially stable situation before you get into gaming since it can be an expensive hobby/luxury.

As for the kids, you have no room to complain if your parents are flipping the bill for everything you have, so be glad they even buy you such expensive luxuries. Just wait until you have to join the real world and work for the stuff you own, so until then shut up or get a job.

Myst4944d ago

Before anyone says anything any further I got one for Christmas so...I no longer have the problem anyway lol.

RedDead4944d ago (Edited 4944d ago )

I dunno what you guys are talking about, the Ps3 originally came with a SD only cable. The Xbox came with a HD/SD cross over. I don't mind if SD is dropped for next gen but this gen should still have SD backed up. Just because people didn't want to get a HD tv back then, They were expensive in most places with the release of the two consoles.

In saying that I agree that if you want to buy a console for this gen, get a new TV first. Think ahead.

I got my first one for christmas in about 07, it's a piece of Sh** compared to my little brothers newer cheaper bigger samsung, the quality of the screen sucks pretty bad and it doesn't have rgb connection

teething4944d ago (Edited 4944d ago )

most games don;t consider standard Def anymore.

If money is tight, just buy a computer monitor that supports high def. I got an awesome 23' inch for my desktop for about 200$ a year ago. I now have a 50 inch plasma though...

If you own a high def console don't bitch about the game. Save your scratch and join this century.

strawberry94944d ago

^ Agreed, a high def console deserves high def quality. If you don't have a proper Tv, that's your fault... as harsh as that sounds

AntoineDcoolette4944d ago

My Television is 20 years old and still works as well as the day I realized I first had it. Why should I have to purchase a new television? The thoughtful sweethearts over at Platinum Games included a standard definition mode with Vanquish so that us still in the Victorian age of television could read text properly :*(

Baka-akaB4944d ago

that's your prerogative and loss . As long as you dont complain about games not being developped for it , like some others did .

Ashby_JC4944d ago

I do feel in 2011 there shouldnt be any complaints about a game not supporting a SD tv.

Its like getting a high end sports car and putting crappy stock tires on it.

Or getting a hi end stereo system and hooking them up to your 20 year old speakers and complaining it doesnt sound good.

the PS3 and the 360 are HD gaming consoles...that although will work on a SD tv they will perform to there FULL potential on a HDTV.

The sheer amount of arrogance on this site continues to astound me. I'm sixteen and as such can't afford a HDTV due to monetary/space issues. However, I still garner a great level of enjoyment from my games. I presume that there is a substantial amount of people in a similar situation as well. Get off your high horses and think before you type next time.

gorebago4944d ago (Edited 4944d ago )

This is why I don't talk to teenagers

Baka-akaB4944d ago

if you could afford the console , then you could afford a small hdtv or pc monitor . Heck if you have a pc there has always been cheap vga box solution with good quality at around 60$ .

With easy solutions , you guys still moaned about such silly things , so who is being arrogant truly ?

Ashby_JC4944d ago

I feel for you as your in a age range where you maybe cant afford a HDTV.

But at the same time YOU know the 360 PS3 is a HD gaming system.

So the ppl who make articles and complain about it is the issue...at least for me it is.

Its a system made for HDTVs to get maximum performance. So why complain if you cant see so and so on inferior SDtvs??

TheDeadMetalhead4944d ago (Edited 4944d ago )

Dragon Age 2 SDTV DLC, coming April 1st, 2011 for $5.

It's so good, you'll swear it was taken right out of the game!

TBM4944d ago

i think by now most people should be able to afford even the cheapest HDTV around. i mean if you have enough dough to buy a console, and the games that come out for them you could at least buy a 720p tv if you know where to look.

I remember back when I played games in standard definition. Back in 1999...

a_bro4945d ago (Edited 4945d ago )

looooooooool.

why are people playing in SD in the first place. these are HD consoles, just like the PC, they all play in HD.

i mean, before you invest in a games console, you should invest on an HDTV first, this is just holding technology back.

flappersack4945d ago

Exactly, whats the point? You really miss out on the full experience. If you can afford a console, you can afford an HDTV, they are cheap as chips these days.

WhiteNoise4944d ago

Panda, be realistic here....in 1999 we would have been rocking 1280x1024. That's still much higher res than current gen games.

Pandamobile4944d ago

Well, you maybe, but I was rocking a PS1 and Roller Coaster Tycoon at 800x600

evrfighter4944d ago (Edited 4944d ago )

1024x768 for me back then...

about what they're claiming hd is now

y0haN4944d ago

800x600 is much higher than SD.

Apotheosize4945d ago

Are non-hd tvs even sold anymore? How can people afford a game console and not something to play it on?

rdgneoz34944d ago

"How can people afford a game console and not something to play it on?"

Before I upgraded the TV in my bedroom to an HD one, I had an HD in the living room and SD in my bedroom. And when it got late at night, instead of waking people up (surround sound and such), I'd move my ass to my room to play. Also, playing from a comfy / warm bed at night kicks ass. Paying off loans and various other bills, as well as saving for a few other important things were more important than multiple HD TVs in my place at the time. While I have multiple now, I didn't a while ago so I can see why it would be nice to see that a game doesn't support SD Tvs or for devs to make sure sh!t like that doesn't happen.

DigitalHorror814943d ago

At my local store, they have one model, it's a 19 inch for 129. Not worth it. lol

kasasensei4945d ago

EA rushed this game, don't be surprised.

Izanagi-no-Okami4945d ago

Nobody is fool enough to play an Xbox or PS3 on an SDTV. It's just plain dumb

EA Made Dragon Age and Mass Effect DLC Free On PC By Retiring The BioWare Points System

Immersed Gamer writes: "In order to replace the oppressive BioWare Points system, EA is making a large portion of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age DLC catalogs free for PC users.

For those of you blissfully unaware, EA and BioWare employed a payment system called BioWare Points on PC to pay for DLCs for titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. While PC gamers have been struggling with BioWare point’s unfair conversion rates and extremely scarce and cost-detrimental sales.

Console players have been allowed to purchase content in pieces through the appropriate Sony and Microsoft shops. For real money, and not BioWare monopoly bucks. In turn, console players missed out on some DLC content, such as Mass Effect 2 pre-order bonuses that have been repackaged into a DLC pack."

Great response to Ubisoft and their disgusting behavior. Ubisoft decide to take away DLC from people who paid for it, while EA give it for free to everyone when they realize their system sucks. Who would have thought that EA of all companies would be showing Ubisoft how it should be done (even if this is EA fixing their own mistakes as well).

Mobis-New-Nest801d ago

What goes around comes around and I promise you, Ubisoft will see their actions blow back on them when their diminishing sales numbers and stock taking a hit downward. That's the only way a company learns when they decide to be reactive instead of proactive.

All BioWare Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "There was a time that BioWare games were the biggest deal in gaming. The Canadian developer’s legacy of all-time classics is well known. Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, and Baldur’s Gate are some of the biggest names in gaming.

While BioWare’s quality has fallen off lately, there’s no denying the quality of titles in their portfolio. That’s why we’re going to dive in and rank every BioWare game from worst to best. By every, I do mean every BioWare game, even the ones you completely forgot about!"

Ranked from worse to even more worse more like, they been on free fall for a fair few years now and I personally don't think any of there earlier games have aged well

autobotdan960d ago

Wow to think at one point in their history they made a Sonic the Hedgehog game..crazy

chicken_in_the_corn960d ago

Anthem is crazy underrated. I really enjoyed it. ME1 is Bioware's best imo

Michiel1989960d ago

I actually put quite a bit of hours into Anthem but i dont think its underrated. It was a huge mess, server issues, gameplay issues, crashes, no endgame loop, too few different enemies, uninteresting gear. too few dungeons.

It for sure had potential and if they could have managed to keep the same gameplay of the classes but without the rest of the issues, this game could have been huge, but in the state in which it launched it was such a letdown. They partly fixed some of the issues, but it took too long. A grinding game like this needs to hook players from day 1.

'Dragon Age' and Why It Sucks to Play Cult Favorite Games

Delving into a well-loved game or series years after its release, when it already has an enthusiastic and devoted fanbase, can be incredibly difficult. People can be casually mean on the internet without intending to, and that happens a lot when you say you don’t like something they do. Fans of the franchise take their love of the game very seriously. They’re fervent and devoted, which has its charms, but it can also feel like you’re disappointing them when you decide their thing is not your thing.

Snakeeater251083d ago

All dragon age games are terribly boring

Kerppamaister1083d ago

Why'd you play DA2 if you thought 1 was boring?

Snakeeater251083d ago

Because of the reviews, I thought they could do better specially gameplay wise and the third one was even worst

spss111083d ago

I've never been able to complete a Dragon Age game. They always felt too rigid in design. I eventually think "why am I playing this over Witcher 3?" or pretty much any other rpg.

arkard1083d ago

The same reason you read a different book, or watch different movies. Different world, characters, lore and story.

jeromeface1083d ago

Idk, because maybe you completed the witcher 3? Not all of us like repeating a game over and over just because its the best in genre.

spss111083d ago (Edited 1083d ago )

@arkard
Never found the story or lore of DA interesting. Inquisition was just generic evil dude with demon army wants to conquer world and you're the chosen one.

@jeromeface
I've played through Witcher 3 once, at the same time I was playing DA Inquisition. Hence the example. I never finished Inquisition and went on to complete Witcher 3.

Yui_Suzumiya1083d ago (Edited 1083d ago )

Well the first bored me but I loved 2 and 3. I could never get into The Witcher or Elder Scrolls but I enjoyed those as far as medieval themed RPG's go.

SegaSaturn6691083d ago

I played inquisition and thought the story was pretty well done. Voice acting as well.

Lost interest when i found an ultimate weapon that could only be wieldable postgame. Like wtf would they let me even obtain it for?

Is it really a cult following if it's in the millions?

IanTH1083d ago (Edited 1083d ago )

lol Definitely a fair point. When a game is made and published by one of the largest video game companies on Earth, has at least 12 million sales between DA:O/DA2/DA:I, DA:I noted as being BioWare's most successful launch, and made EA enough money to greenlight a 3rd game? I'm thinking it's tough to argue that's niche :-p

If you take cult following on the face of it - a group of people who are highly dedicated & passionate about something - the author wouldn't be wrong. But they have to know that term is most widely associated with the group being small/the object being obscure, so it can't really apply here.

melons1083d ago

Yeah, in what universe is a series with three games, a fourth on the way that's sold millions and is published by EA a "cult favorite"? Next you'll be telling me The Witcher 3 is a plucky and underrated indie.

IanTH1082d ago

I've heard about this hidden gem called GTA V...

jznrpg1083d ago (Edited 1083d ago )

Cult favorite? It’s well known and sold fairly well and they are making a fourth game . I don’t see it anywhere near cult favorite status . I really enjoyed the first game and the third was pretty good (with failed mmo faults you could notice) but the second game was lazily made garbage .

Yui_Suzumiya1083d ago

Second was the best game which is the biggest hot take I've ever had, lol

ElvisHuxley1083d ago (Edited 1083d ago )

Loved the first one, second was pretty good. Couldn't even get through the third one. Don't have high hopes for 4, but hey, nowhere to go but up hopefully.

moomoo3191083d ago (Edited 1083d ago )

DA: Origins was cool, but I got Mass Effect 2 at the same time and goddayum there was no comparison imo.
