Between the arbitrary difficulty and limited lives, Catherine feels more like a port of an old-school arcade game than a modern AAA title. The inclusion of an 80s style arcade demake of the puzzle sections seems to indicate that Atlus knew quite well that its game would be perceived as such. As amazing as the game's story is, it's hard to recommend throwing down $80 plus on an import copy of the game, when the English language version is just around the corner and will probably include the upcoming difficulty patch on the disc.
Plenty of unforgettable games have completely messed up their players throughout the years, all the way back from the PS1 days to the dark recesses of the modern internet.
Deadly Premonition is a pretty weird game, but all of these absolute oddities are even weirder.
Paul writes: "Games can be many different things to different people. The subject of this Looking Back article is something a little different however, as it deals with infidelity and the fallout that comes the way of the straying main character. Intrigued? Well, come with me to the weird world of 2011’s Catherine!"
Damn.
I knew the demo was bad but this pretty much confirms that I'm not going to buy it. I might rent it but supposedly it's releasing on the same day as The Cursed Crusade so it will probably be a little after that (if at all).
great game, cool story and really nice humor and graphics
not a 5/10 game, more like 8
So, let me get this straight:
"This game is too hard and punishes you for dying. It's crap, 5/10."
Seems like the average review nowadays. U.S. version should at least have the super-easy modo for these guys to stop complaining, though.
Look, the guy even says it: "Between the arbitrary difficulty and limited lives, Catherine feels more like a port of an old-school arcade game than a modern AAA title."
That's the idea, silly reviewer! See, this is why I hate reviewers sometimes. They make out obvious designs and mechanics included in the game to be flaws, ignoring the fact that it was the idea in the first place.
This is in no way a 5/10. Easily a 8/10
