T-Hill writes: IGN, once my favorite site for getting my gaming fix on has now fallen to nothing more than a shell of its former self. Review after review IGN has left me feeling that they have lost touch with the gaming audience and Killzone 3′s review proves it.
During the IGN Live interview with Phil Spencer, the crowd cheered even if the topic was about closures, and its because they were told to.
Just reading this headline alone made me feel grimy. Disgusting, all around. Haven't trusted IGN since over a decade ago, so this isn't really surprising to hear.
MS are buying up the industry so you need a compliant media to tell you how awesome consolidation and mass layoffs are... and they know MS is IP hunting too, they will be cut off from review copies of some of gaming's biggest IP's if they don't play ball.
The only way they can rise excitement in a crowd is paying for it. LAMENESS is MIcrosoft best product to date.
I think that kind of thing night be standard. I once was in the audience for Wheel of Fortune and there was a guy that briefed us before the show on his hand signals, when we were supposed to react/applaud and stuff like that and we were told to check under our seats because one of them had a prize underneath it.
Edit: Okay, read the article, this was definitely some slimy behaviour by IGN and it sounds like it wasn't just on the behalf of Xbox either.
Also, since IGN bought Humble Bundle years ago, they stopped occasionally giving a game away for free during certain big sales events etc, screw IGN.
It is for say a game show or similar shows for entertainment purposes but a interview not really.
Bruno Rodriguez confirmed that his statement applied to the entire three-day Fanfest event, not solely Phil Spencer's interview. Regrettably, this part of his response is absent from the article, which raises questions about its omission.
Here is the complete explanation
https://x.com/BrunoRo115301...
Petebloodyonion,
It is an odd omission. While I do believe IGN has some problematic biases, one can't really say it's done for Spencer in light of this information.
Good follow up.
I remember when they gave Alien Isolation a bad review because the alien AI acted like a actual Xenomorph which was free to do what it wanted and hunt you down, and docked Days Gone points because it had a white female as Deacons Girl, oh and they have one of the worst fanboys in Dustin, he has no shame whatsoever.
Don't forget "too much water". It's like they hate hire people that hate their jobs. This is a people problem, when people aren't humbled they become full of themselves. IGN and other news publishers have been given too much sway, and too much preferential treatment. They forget they're meant to inform the people, and have instead become a tool to sell an image these companies want to portray. Perception of power and authority and influence corrupts people.
Remember when game journalism wasn't about playing kiss a** to ensure that you would still have a working relationship with a vendor.
2013 journalism
So what do people without stable a internet connection do
Well fortunately we have a product for those people it's the 360
So stick with 360 that's your message
2024 journalism
Ok everybody Phil's coming clap and cheer or we kick you out here's a copy of assassins creed now clap
“Remember when game journalism wasn't about playing kiss a** to ensure that you would still have a working relationship with a vendor.”
No, I don’t hunk such a time existed. And when non-gaming a site like Paste Magazine or general news publication like The Chicago Tribune negatively reviews a game, the fans go out of their God dammed minds. So it’s not just about cozying up to publishers and their advertising dollars, also about pandering to fan bases.
I think the biggest difference between the past and present is that games were rated based on a number of factors, not opinions and emotions. Pre internet when print magazines were your source for reviews, guides, and news. While still subjective the measurements gave a base line about the games own merits & worth in it's own right from technical to storytelling. Such measures as graphics, story, sound, etc. Today professional games journalist merely means you get paid to write your opinionated drivel. At this point it's nothing more and no different than user reviews minus the fact they get paid. Because of this good games suffer in sales and we see less risks taken by publishers and instead see more and more retreads, remasters, remakes.... Because of this people are too quick to jump into the narrative instead of actually trying something new, different, etc. What is missing today is that subjectivity where games are rated on merits. 2 cents
Yet here you are, trying to down play the down playing?
Slimy behaviour is slimy behaviour, no matter when it happens.
Did you read the article? The crowd was told to cheer for whatever guest they had on and what they spoke about. The specific part about the layoff during the article was made up for the views.
Whenever something sounds outrageous, it is best to investigate further.
@Skuletor
Slimy behavior would also be calling something slimy behavior because of your fanboy hatred for said company, when in fact ALL live audiences are giving direction and incentive to act in a positive manner. It sales the product being promoted and gives the appearance of a fun atmosphere so more people would want to come and be involved in future tapings or events.
Bleed,
Exactly, super overdone desperate.
"Oh they stopped a union of Q&A people"
"Oh they paid people to cheer at a show"(which by the way is standard stuff). They do that shit at plays, comedy shows and I'm sure at almost any game show, I see people clap for UBIsoft lame ass shows all the time.
Haha, all this hate, and stupid news, because MS and Xbox is on fire...man people are really trying hard because no other game company had shit to show...
MS has so much devs under their belt and the heat is getting real now, no more drought years, shit they are even making PS fans happy when they throw them a bone from THEIR(MS) owned, (yup they bought them), developers.
Mostly on this bubble of a site are people even reacting to such silly nonsense, let's say they did so fucking what lol, the show spoke for itself.
With their multiplatform fest?
This is slimy whether it happened now or a year ago.
No, I wouldn't; I acknowledge any company when they have a great showing; that is a fact because I get more games to play.
My whole talk for the last week has been mostly shutting down all the nonsense hate of such a great gaming showcase. Trust me, I am well aware that MS is not "winning" and it's never a point I try to push.
For me, it's when you look at all the shit talking about MS having no games, they suck, there is no excitement for Xbox comments, and then boom, they have an excellent showcase, then the narratives change, and the goalposts move, and the ridiculousness ensues, point in case, silly fanboys calling it a "Sony show" because they had multiples.
So again, no, I wouldn't; my points as a whole are mostly pointing to hypocrisy and the silly fanboy hive mind mentality.
You're focusing on the showcase when this article in particular isn't about that.
This is about the crowd being told to cheer no matter what and we're given incentives to do so. If this was Sony you'd be damn be sure to focus that and criticize it. I'll give you credit in that you may sprinkle in a "they had a great showcase. No need to resort to stuff like this" to come off as neutral.
Edit:
I just read your post in it's entirety. Man, MS isn't only one that gets heat from fanboys. If Sony does a showcase where the main highlights are multiplats they will get comments from fanboys too. Question is, if Sony actually did this, what will YOUR reaction be? Will you praise them like you do Microsoft? Or focus on the hypocrisy of Sony fans who will undoubtedly praise the show? Or call out the hypocrisy of MS fans who will undoubtedly criticize the show for multiplats being the best games shown?
"I'll give you credit in that you may sprinkle in a "they had a great showcase. No need to resort to stuff like this" to come off as neutral."
SMH, you have to understand that this comment alone will make you miss most points of what I say, so discussions with you come off as almost pointless, lol.
Your constant guesses about what I would say equate to nothingness because you are going to read, interpret, and fabricate in your own head what I say instead of what I actually said. To you, it's a console war, and you are fighting it, not me. I vote mostly with my wallet, and in that regard, I support Sony, Nintendo, and MS. Anything else is a lesser value argument than your perceived thoughts about me being neutral or not.
Sony did, in fact, have a 2023 showcase where they showed and displayed a lot of 3rd party, multiplatform games(I posted it on the other thread, about 16 games from the showcase coming to PS); I did not shit on the conference or say that it was an MS show. If going forward, MS fans were to say the same thing, I would not join in on the nonsense, and at the same time, the Sony-only fans are setting the stage for that type of behavior.
Lastly, the main highlights of the showcase were NOT multiplatform(unless you are counting PC, then lol). I guess they were, but then that would be the case for everything Xbox shows and the games that Sony releases on PC, staggered or not.
I'm not fabricating anything in my head. There's obvious bias in your posts you're just not willing to admit them.
" I would not join in on the nonsense, and at the same time, the Sony-only fans are setting the stage for that type of behavior."
O REALLY?
Well BOY, do I have bad news for you. Xbox fans are the ones that set the stage for 'insert console' has no games type of behavior during the PS360 era at the beginning of the Gen. Since then each side has been flipping back and forth on the 'no game mantra swhen it suits them. If you truly weren't fighting the "console war" you'd acknowledge this and realize why only pointing the finger to one side is pointless because they BOTH do it when it suits them and shamelessly so.
Exactly, it's been a long a** time since they had a decent show and all of the sudden it's the second coming of Jesus lmao oh, and apparently we PS gamers are afraid and salty because Sony didn't have a 2 hr show...It'll only take a 20 sec trailer of the new Ghost of Tsushima just to smack them down to reality and show them who's boss;)
Yeah IGN is a mouthpiece for advertiser's that's how they make money try going to a IGN site without being suffocated by ads. Microsoft like this practical as they have deep pockets
You're not going to take out full page ads and side banners in a publication and see the game get a 6/10
Most of the gaming media are the same, especially the ones here in the States. They try so hard to keep their preferred brand kinda relevant. It hasn't worked though, with every month that passes by we see their box to decline in sales more and more.
Once again, we observe the familiar scenario of individuals diving into the comments section without reading the article itself. Below is some information extracted from the article.
"The person who talked about it, Bruno Rodriguez, mentioned that this cheering and shouting wasn’t an exclusive thing just for Spencer, and this was something they were instructed to do regardless of the person being interviewed."
It's quite surprising that MP1st didn't post Bruno Rodriguez's full response to the video, clarifying the context, his inability to hear the host properly, and how it wasn't a Phil Spencer thing, it happened the WHOLE weekend. The link is provided as the source is significant.
https://x.com/i/status/1800...
But I'm pretty sure that no one will actually go see the response and make it a IGN suck they planned this for Spencer
Actually, I find a certain aspect of IGN scummy, the idea that it wasn't broadcast live despite the event being named IGN LIVE.
haha, they are still ignoring your facts; man, you can't make this shit up.
17 downvotes for a factual post and people under you are saying the same shit, not seeing how their biased ass opinions are even worst than anyone on IGN.
No conspiracy right ? IGN and Digital Foundry have nothing to do with being MS shills. But the obvious tells us otherwise.
Are Comicon, Gamescon, and similar events now conspiring simply because they offer prizes, drinks, and more during their conventions?
IGN Live 2024 was a three-day fanfest convention featuring numerous events, including the Spencer interview.
Here is the complete 3day event recap
https://www.ign.com/article...
Click bait and petty stuff right there. Even if it was true it's not that big of a deal. No need for people to get upset over it. Like I said before this type of stuff is expected because of the good Xbox showcase.
It's an IGN thing, not an xbox thing.
"The person who talked about it, Bruno Rodriguez, mentioned that this cheering and shouting wasn’t an exclusive thing just for Spencer, and this was something they were instructed to do regardless of the person being interviewed."
and all of you eat it up like cotton candy, very nice. Disgusting headline Excaliburps, maybe read the article.
I would say keep your fucking prizes, I'm going to say what I want period. Phil the shit bag would definitely hear me about the topic about closures. Would have called him and MS greedy POS's and Phil your a fucking disgrace to the gaming community and would be best if you just resign, just GTFO. MS is worth how much? 3 trillion, that's all I'm saying.
Lol...I don't believe a word of that. That keyboard warrior stuff doesn't go far nowadays. Phil Spencer is a multimillionaire. I'm sure he gets a butt load of comments like this on a daily basis. If this stuff bothers you that much that you are saying such ridiculous things about a person you've never met it's time to take a breather. It's not that serious. I don't condone the closing of studios but unfortunately it happens. I don't get the negative attitude about Phil. He's not a saint but neither are the other people in the same position at other companies. What has he done to you personally that you would've have this attitude towards him? At the end of the day he is just another dude doing a job.
No really I would say that. I'm the type that is shoot first ask questions later I do not hold back anywhere, and don't care what comes out of my mouth. I have always been this way, it's shit bags like Phil that need to be told off and most likely deserve to be slapped around. You know it's true he's rich, MS is rich but those studios he closed, those people are not rich and TBH he does not give a fuck. What's worse peole keep supporting a company that does this.
PRIMORDUS,
" I'm the type that is shoot first ask questions later I do not hold back anywhere, and don't care what comes out of my mouth."
Hmmm, is this a good thing? From reading your comment, I would say not.
It's a beta attitude, loud, obnoxious, Karen type, and generally spoken by people who need more confidence or are not happy.
You would ruin a showcase by yelling and screaming at a show where people are generally fans of a thing because of your opinion on a matter. I can assure you that it's not an admirable quality, and you need to sort that out. One option would be not to attend things you don't like, lol.
Few days ago, they were caught doing some IGNorant poll question on youtube asking who won the summer showcase showdown, Sony or Microsoft even though Sony have yet to get do their showcase.
They simply not even tried to hide it anymore now that they have too much power buyout other gaming sites does that remind you of some other company lately who tried pay to win the industry?
I'm literally one of the folks that pays no attention to ign I don't even clock on their YouTube channel I usually watch gameranx, ign always seemed off to me for some reason lol
Is this what adults are upset about in 2024? Damn, I could find a lot more to be upset about than pizza being offered at an Xbox event. 🤣
If I was there I wouldn't need any pizza to cheer. Xbox just had the best game conference that I've seen in at least 10 years.
Totally reminds me of the 360 days.
Don't know why guys are trying to trash it should be happy we got some games coming that are going to be awesome.
As dumb as this is, it is how live shows go.
At least we can stop pretending that ign is journalism.
Lol the prizes better be worth it headsets and 5hr energy lol. All that to sell ones integrity to cheer with excitement. I bet the headsets were something very cheap that a person could buy off Aliexpress.
This has nothing to do with Phil. But I guess it’s just fits better with the blue narrative here on n4.
… and Other Live Interviews
Exactly what I've been saying in the comments, IGN bought and paid for by Microsoft and now IGN bought out a large chunk of the gaming press in preparation to try and turn around Xbox's misfortunes whether you like it or not. IGN and its outlets are going to spam you with positive reviews and articles covering Xbox over the next decade. This is Rupert Murdoch levels of trying to control the messaging.
Duuh, as soon as there is a bit of negative news about Sony, IGN is all over it, making 10 videos about it. I already knew they were biased.
There are also US based Youtubers who do the same thing, Spawn Wave, YongYea, ReviewTechUSA to name a few. Sony makes a minor mistake they are all on it trying to kill Sony or Nintendo but when Microsoft continually makes nuclear bomb sized mistakes they are all silent. Unfortunately there are people who just support Xbox because it is the American Patriot Box and they invested too much in their digital eco system to quit, not because it is a better product.
I think people were forgetting or something. During ps360 days they were on Sonys neck every other day. It's known since then that IGN has some hardcore Xbox fanboys in their staff. This isn't exactly news
Weren't they caught using ps3 footage of games while reviewing 360 versions?
I haven't trusted them since and never will.
Usual for Xbox Shows. Remember their E3 events with tons of people in xbox shirts that clapped and cheered like there is no tomorrow.
that's why i don't give a fk about game reviews anymore, biased and bought companies
you tube game-play is your friend
This is a terrible and misleading article. The crowd was given prizes for cheering in general regardless of who was being interviewed or what they were talking about to keep the energy going. This is something every studio that has a crowd is instructed to do when they have a guest.
The article added the portion about Phil Spenser for the clicks and views.
There is no way people are surprised by this. It's the entertainment bizz, none of it is real, and it's all about getting your money.
You can't trust Microsoft. I quit following IGN years ago. It just shows how desperate everyone's gotten and the sides people are really on, they're far more interested in supporting the corrupt than those with integrity
IGN Entertainment has acquired the Gamer Network family of digital brands for an undisclosed sum. As a result of the acquisition, some redundancies have been made across the UK-based organisation.
Well this can only mean one thing... more job layoffs even in the publication industry.
“Layoffs occuring“
Yep. IGN now has a monopoly in the gaming media.
“As a result of the acquisition, some redundancies have been made across the UK-based organisation.”
“Gamer Network's publications are GamesIndustry.biz, Eurogamer (including six local language editions), Rock Paper Shotgun, VG247 and Dicebreaker. The business also holds shares in Outside Xbox, Digital Foundry and Hookshot (which operates Nintendolife, PushSquare, PureXbox and Time Extension).”
“IGN Entertainment is the division of Ziff Davis that includes IGN, MapGenie, HowLongToBeat, and Humble Bundle. It has acquired the websites from PAX and New York Comic-Con organiser ReedPop, which initially bought the Gamer Network business in 2018.“
Surprising news, also a little sad as the magazine era is over and the website era is slowly coming to an end. But it must be said that many of the bastards who work at these places have operated as a mafia to control opinion on not only what can be said about games, but who can be allowed to talk about them, and what can be allowed to feature in them or not. As said above, redundancies are coming, Eurogamer pays the highest salaries for a team of staff who for some their output is minimal. Eurogamer also campaigned against Hogwarts Legacy and refused to review it -, the site took a hit. PAX has probably thought to cut its losses. Some job layoffs? I know of some of these people and they took pride in excluding - I will shed no tears.
This is exactly what Microsoft needs to better their image, control over the narrative by having the same message come from different colors umbrellas that are all really made by the same company.
All this means is a collective hive mind when reporting the news
They’ll discuss with each other how to handle topics and what kind of headlines to go with so they can fire round after round of whatever point they want to make
And the sad thing is over the many years even to the old GameGate days they love making gamers look bad as a collective. Anything for a hit piece.
Narrative control. I don’t like this at all.
Independent reviewers will be more important than ever.
"They’ll discuss with each other how to handle topics and what kind of headlines to go with so they can fire round after round of whatever point they want to make."
You say this like it will be a new thing that they didn't already do.
Yea, I had actually just seen today on Linkedin that a GamesIndustry.biz guy was talking about being laid off. I didn't read all of his post, but I bet it's because of this. That's a shame to hear. :\
Probably Microsoft's fault!
They surely gave IGN the idea.
What's next IGN Pass?
But joke aside let's hope that this makes the news better compared to some of IGN branches
Microsoft and IGN work quite closely so it isn't a stretch to say this is a move to control the gaming press to get everyone singing from the Microsoft hymn sheet. Not a good look at all. It is transparent stuff like this which is backfiring in Microsoft's face. First they want control of all the games now the media.
While there's obviously a desire to preserve add revenue and early access to review copies, I doubt there's the level of conspiracy here that you imply. I mean there's no direct link between MS and IGN right?
You're probably right!!!!
Here's MS evil plan
1) Make sure that Hellblade 2 receives inflated reviews.
2) Fire all the ppl across UK who gave Starfield the justified 6/10 reviews
3) Make sure that Game industry.biz stops giving Sony's president a tribute to spew their lies and have them talk to Sarah Bonds and Todd Howard only.
4) Control the majority of players for the GOTY award so MS wins from now on.
PPL needs to know about this!
@crazyCoconuts The world has moved on from "direct links" as companies were easily caught doing that. These days corporations can merely operate as a cartel through shared mutual interest which is not strictly kosher either but is also more difficult to prove. It's the fundamental flaw with big corporations in the US economy today and no one in power is addressing it.
Is there proof to anything you're saying?
I've never heard of anything like this or is this N4G once again make believing stuff outta thin air again?
@jing if you have proof then I stand corrected.
Otherwise it seems like more conspiratorial thinking to explain what could otherwise be explained by natural forces of market economies.
Don't get me wrong, I believe there is bias all over and unsavory influences. I just don't think it's all centrally planned by evil villains in a smoke-filled room
I don't think anyone has proof but my personal experience corroborates what he is saying about IGN being in MS’s corner for whatever reason.
Granted, Last time I visited IGN regularly was years ago, I literally stopped once I realized the huge bias they showed in favor of xbox. Their pages for the two consoles were fundamentally different. When they would invite xbox president he was treated completely different than when Shuhei Yoshida was invited. The xbox pres was treated as one of their own. There was just too many examples, it wasn’t even much of a secret.
@Lighting77 The proof is in the pudding, "Partnerships for Events: Microsoft and IGN partner for specific events or showcases." "Sponsored Segments: Microsoft has sponsored segments within IGN's showcases." "Industry Relationships: Microsoft and IGN, as major players in the gaming industry, simply have good working relationships. This leads to collaborations on shows & joint announcements without any ownership involved." They just had an event together recently. The crux of it is money is being exchanged for favors, when that happens editorial independence goes out the window.
There was controversy about Microsoft having involvement with Polygon in the past and it proved to be real and effected their editorial bias. "Investment in Web3 Startup: Microsoft's venture capital arm, M12, participated in a $20 million funding round for Space and Time, a Web3 data warehousing platform, alongside Polygon (amongst other investors) "
The embargo was to make sure IGN had time to finalize the deal and make sure Eurogamer gave this game a 5 stars instead of a 3.
Man, how devious and low can Microsoft go just to promote Gamepass
I heard that it costs a ton of money to MS and they will raise the price of Gamepass by a lot of money just to compensate
true story
Oh boy! If we've learned one thing about recent news, corporate shrinkage of an industry via buyouts from those at top only leads to good things for employees and consumers!
Aloy!
Yes, good credible websites, I agree, it is a good match.
IGN is one of the most trusted gaming sites, weather you like it or not, but I know because they don't fit the N4G goofiness bubble, they can't be good.
I left ign years ago. Used to be on the ign forums all the time. I left there and found here. Not sure if you remember but this place used to be pretty bad for Sony fans. 360 was king for a few years. Anyone I don't quite remember but ign changed. Whatever the fk it was it seemed for the worse.
I think the consolidation is an issue. the whole conspiracy angle n4g guys are playing at by saying MS gave IGN money for this is annoying, but overall the Consolidation is not a good move.
I'm not on the bribing for reviews thing. Scores themselves should be ignored entirely as far as I'm concerned. But, consolidation is not helping anyone but to solidify IGN even more than ever before. Less competition at the top.
Ummmm not sure that’s a good thing that all these review sites are under the same umbrella. There’s no guarantee that they will maintain a non-bias opinion not paid for by the highest bidder.
You can go much farther back than that. Never forget the Kane and Lynch 2 review drama
Edit: wait that was GameSpot. Still though - don't trust these websites for anything. Find YouTubers like who's opinions you agree with and watch them instead. GaminylGames, Minimme, Digital Foundry, GMan, whatever. All better than these ad-filled "reviews" from people who are forced to play games and score with an arbitrary number
@Amplitude
Digital Foundry has lost my trust ever since they got that MS money, but other than that, I'm with you.
If I'm on the fence of a game, I wait till the reviewers that share my taste has given their opinion.
@MrNinosan
I didn't blame Microsoft for inviting digital foundry to expressly launch their new hardware, I mean good move by them getting a non bias technology focused influencer to gush about the series x, my issue is they took them up on their offer, taking a blatant sweetener like that really irks me, ever since I view their content with a pinch of salt
Ouch, that does not sounds good for Eurogamer.
With so much of the industry media that will more or less follow the same editorial line, it will be harder and harder to distinguish PR from actual journalism in a couple of years.
Thinking about it, may it explain their review score for Hellblade 2?
***harder and harder to distinguish PR from actual journalism in a couple of years. ***
The age of gaming advertorials.
You're right all of this is just to promote Hellblade 2 and inflate the score.
Also the why cuts are indeed coming to Eurogamer and other UK branches because they only gave Starfield an average score.
Shed the non US assets that are not favorable to Xbox keep the US assets that are. Microsoft are going to deliver crap and they are going to tell you their crap is good and you are going to buy it. That seems to be the strategy. At this point I just want them out of gaming as they are operating like cancer.
Exactly right. No more journalists. Just 1 take regurgitated & paraphrased down the chain. Smh.
Their marketing budget is nonexistent. Instead they will publish articles for you to click on this site to get information (biased propaganda) about their games and ad dollars from you here and on their website too.
This is the new marketing strategy
Eurogamer and Rock and paper had some of the worst takes I've ever read so making said sites worse will be challenging but i trust ign
Oh good, more consolidation. Because that's what we consumers need; more corporate empires to dictate how we should spend our time and how we should shape our opinions.
The power dynamic in the corporate world is totally screwed up right now.
Gutted that GamerBiz was apart of this. It's going to turn into a clickbait, ad spammed site. It was one of the last places you could read up on developer news and comments, without a PR filter. GG I guess.
IGN thanks MS for the money to purchase the whole industry so even more reviews can be controlled the "right" direction.
Well played MS.
Hopefully DF will end their relationship with Eurogamer and just put their articles on their own site going forward.
Looks like IGN is going to now control the narrative. Can’t have IGN and Eurogamer having differing opinions on something critical. Like they stated there is also some redundancy that will be dealt with accordingly.
I swear for gaming, that is supposed to be fun you guys complain about everything, Lord have mercy! every single thing that happens, you guys form conspiracy theories, and then bitch and moan about your own conspiracy.
I find your lack of concern for things like consolidation, layoffs, rising costs, and rampant advertising really odd. Imagine that in order to get good press now you HAVE to satisfy the right people. It bullies publishers into conforming. If you get blacklisted from one major publication, now that carries to others who are actually all owned by the same people. It may sound like a conspiracy theory, but the ability to control information is the power to impose your will. And the danger is real.
Look Eonjay I get it, I understand the way the world and situation works,
layoffs suck, it's hardly new, and it will never be a happy situation, but it has been going on for like 4-5 years now and every time we have this gigantic blowout like the world is about to end. The pandemic really changed the world in many ways, and to some extent things are trying to balance out.
rising cost sucks, but it is affecting the world, not just video games, like you know food is essential and games are not, there is so much ways you can save money, sales, sub services, second hand, borrowing from friends, or just waiting for a general price drop, and in this case why don't you just visit the gaming you like reading or feel the most in tune with, trust me there are 100s, what are you afraid of? Spinning what media? Is it that you guys think gaming sites will make MS win the console war?!! Hahaha, just stop.
I could care less personally(not saying it's good) about advertising, as I grew up with normal television and commercial were a thing, not now that you can pay for no commercial on streaming service people act like ads is the end of the world...it's such a trivial thing that you have to see a sprite logo in a game or a commercial for a game.
All I'm saying is that you guys overblow these issues, create situation and still purchase the games and console, and still read the website...if it's this much DANGER do your part and stop doing the very thing you preaching doom and gloom about. One small example is that many on here claim to have sub services, but still sign up for PS Plus and when a certain games come out sub to GP for a month or two... supporting the very thing they hate.
The software730. I'm with you on everything up to the subscription thing. Alot of us said day 1 releases are bad. Not the subscription as a whole. I'm subscribed to both but pretty much waste my money since I typically buy what I'm playing. Anyway I think from what I've seen the lot of us say day 1 is the issue. It's showing to.
Oh dear. This will affect Digital Foundry no doubt, as they're part of Eurogamer. They're about to lose a lot of credibility.
They should be unaffected as they use a bespoke means of reviewing and collecting the data they present which does not allow for outside influences.
Of course, I just made that all up because I wanted to use the word 'bespoke' in a fancy sounding sentence like Richard does.
Ha! That is great! I have never actually used the work 'bespoke' in any form, let me try!!!
I guess I'm in the minority because IGN is bespoken to me, and I often, more than not agree with their reviews of games, and Movies.
Please tell me I used bespoken correctly!!!
Yeah but you know that IGN will add a caveat or two and will definitely make changes. Maybe not in the here and now, but in the future, right?
Sorry I turned into an amalgamation of John and Rich there 🙃
@thesoftware730 nice try, pretty close. I saw what you was getting at. It's bespoke, not bespoken. Basically it means a custom or unique thing. In darth's example he was saying that DF have a unique or custom made way of reviewing. Give them a watch it's one of Richard's favourite words, just like John says caveat all the time.
You did give me a chuckle though, so props for that 🤣
Oh no that means those numptys over at IGN who don't know the difference between a polygon and a pixel now own a share of digital foundry.
Best comment I saw was the tone deafness of IGN covering game industry layoffs and now they are doing layoffs of their own. Bidenomics is doing wonders for everyone with Bidenflation. Video games and consoles are a luxury item and no one has money to spend, thus layoffs.
You know all this started under the last guy right. Pretty sure prices rising and such started during covid. Good luck though.
Watch the video then get back to me. https://www.youtube.com/wat... Per the video and WSJ adjusted per inflation people had 30 percent more house hold income under the previous guy and with current guy is only up .7 percent. So good luck with that. Even CNN fact checked the Big Guy for lying about inflation. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05... When he took office inflation was at 1.4 percent then spiked to 9 percent per CNN.
Now i see why they gave hellblade 2 great scores, xbox is good friends with ign now a days.
Eurogamer gave it basically 10/10 lol and other than its graphics I failed to see why it deserved such a score.
All the glowing reviews actually makes all the sense now, Microsoft really did tried to control the gaming media didn't think I was right for one thing and when I do why does it had to be something this sinister?!
Damn it, IGN was already too big for its own good. This is bad news, I do visit some of those sites, such as Digital Foundry and Time Extension.
We'll never know what's going on behind the scenes, and if they're being influenced in some way. This sucks!
I knew it became clear ever since IGN did that ID@Xbox showcase exclusively last month and yesterday the unusually glowing reviews of Hellblade II from both IGN and especially Eurogamer who was about to get acquired so they're have to be a good boy to their new masters.
I noticed weird damage control defending their review left and right from eurogamer staff like Chris Tapsell.
Good thing I don't take much notice of these journalists most of the times. Gamer reviews do more for me than corporate reviewers.
This is a dying genre in game reviews. I believe all these publications were money struggling and prepared themselves to be bought.
You gonna tell me that you hanged around in their articles, watch their web page ads and argued in their comment sections?
Of course not, you just red the title and wrote here an essay.
Who reads Eurogamer?
We all know we like to count pixels on DF YouTube.
Dying genre.
Oh, and HellBlade 2 proves it. 10/10 articles. MY God. 5h walking game.
Have you seen Elden Ring DLC trailer? Yeah... I cried.
A Disaster for unbiased news and reviews. Oh well at least we only need to visit one site now to know the review scores on the others lol
Terrrible news for journalism, different media should never be controlled by a single big company.
welp.. if those companies werent woke and biased before, they definitely will be now 🙄😕
No wonder Eurogamer is so pro Microsoft lately, they are being bought by a company that is essentially owned by M$ and would have failed if not for their investments.
Oh IGN, selling out is exactly what I expected since they became a pop culture website and less about gaming.
I miss the good old days of having a magazine subscription to IGN, and GamePro. Loved getting them in the mail as a kid. I'm not going to lie. I basically learned how to read because of gaming publications, and game manuals. Freaking shame that era is gone.
That is... A lot of consolidation, having said that, I haven't used/trusted those sites in years, but I'm sure this won't be good for the industry or it's customers.
eurogamer was one of my absolute favorites for years. Can't wait to see how IGN ruins it.
If they get them to stop using the word bespoke in every article it’ll be an improvement

IGN gets paid off !!!!!
ign can go to hell
IGNs review of Killzone 3 - 8.5 (85%)
Current metacritic rating - 86%
Can't speak for the 'gaming audience' myself, but with regards to the other reviews out there it appears to be about average.
Nice work, agree on what you said, ign has fallen.
video hit the nail on the head ign gave there opinion and did not compare zk to the other fps out there now, there should be a check list of things that a game is scored by not some dudes opinion, and if thats the way they do reviews then at lest get 4 or 5 opinions and then average them together
