Killzone 3 Beta: First Impressions are Everything

VGW: It would be both lazy and a gross understatement to define Killzone 3 as merely a highly anticipated sequel. In a multi-platform world where the almighty exclusive faces extinction, Guerilla‘s Killzone franchise has an overwhelming burden. This third installment is responsible for demonstrating the fidelity of Sony’s Move controller to its core audience, further pushing Sony’s aggressive 3D strategy, and of course being one more compelling reason to own a Playstation 3.

By far the best looking fps everrrrr on CONSOLES. Online is amazing and this game will definitely Be a day 1 pickup for me.

killyourfm4851d ago

I don't typically succumb to fanboyish statements, but I'm gonna give you a big "hell yes" on this one. Speaking as someone who owns every console - and was even underwhelmed with KZ2 - this one is going to be played for years to come.

jony_dols4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

I don't understand who is disagreeing with him.
It is clearly the best looking FPS on a CONSOLE.

Crysis 2 is very disappointing graphically on the 360 anyway (and it will probably be a similar story on the PS3 version).

Crysis 2 will look amazing (but only if you can afford to buy or build an expensive gaming PC).

hennessey864851d ago

the kz3 beta and ive already paid for it at shopto. @jony dols you need your eyes testing. While it may not look as good as killzone 3 crysis 2 is a great looking game and i really enjoyed the beta

gamer20104850d ago

For sure. I am far from being a frothing at the mouth fanboy of any console, but I have been playing the beta and in my opinion it is superb. For the multiplayer and delicious graphics alone it is a must buy.

jony_dols4850d ago

Disappointing doesn't mean bad.

The graphics in Crysis 2 beta are very good.
But they are nowhere near as good, as either the media and Crytek led us on to believe.

Crysis 2 on consoles, graphically isn't that impressive. The PC is where the game will shine.

byeGollum4851d ago

I agree, but it won't hold that title for long lol ..theres another mammoth releasing in march

killyourfm4851d ago

Crysis 2? Man, I just wasn't feeling the FUN factor.

plb4851d ago

Haven't seen Crysis 2 PS3 footage but if it looks like 360 version than it's not beating KZ3..not even close. PC version yes but not console version.

Kon4851d ago

Get it on PC and be happy

HellzAssassin4851d ago

@ killyourfm
Seriously? You don't think Crysis is fun? :O
Damn, I've played both Crysis and Crysis Warhead on my laptop over and over. It's unique, badass, and looks beautiful! Even on medium settings. Crysis 2 will surely not disappoint and I'm highly looking forward to it. Although, Crysis' multiplayer was terrible... And I hope Crysis 2's multiplayer isn't as bad.

visualb4850d ago

sorry man, but on consoles, KZ3 has taken the graphical cake and eaten it

it'll remain so until either infamous 2, L.A. Noir, Uncharted 3 or The Last Guardia knock it off.

as for PC? sure why not. GG are flattered you compare their console game built on 5 year old hardware to a recent state of the art PC game

gamer20104850d ago

VisualB, that comment seems very slanted. Crysis 2 is definitely in the running as one of the best looking games this year. I'm not saying it will beat any other game, all I am saying is that it is in the running and we won't know for sure until it is completed and released.

Also, I don't know how you can overlook games like Gears of War 3 and Rage.

Crysis 2 http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Rage http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Gears 3 http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Oh, and I am sorry, but inFamous 2 isn't in the same territory as all the aforementioned games. I am a fan of the series but the graphics in the first one were pretty mediocre and even though they have definitely been improved in the second one they still aren't to the level of the top tier games.

The Last Guardian, on the other hand, definitely does look like it will be one of the best looking games on any console.

Killzone 3, Crysis 2, Gears of War 3, Rage, Uncharted 3, and The Last Guardian are my best bets for graphical excellence on consoles this year. Maybe LA Noire, but I haven't seen enough of that yet to be certain.

stephmhishot4850d ago

gamer2010: Little unfair to Infamous considering its an open world game. Graphics are going to suffer. But if they can manage to nearly match UC2 graphics with the sequel, that's going to be very, very, VERY impressive.

xAlmostPro4851d ago

very well put.. which is another thing bugging me about the review scores.. they seem to be only reviewing story and not how amazing the multiplayer actaully is and how much its not only improved over killzone 2 but how much its advanced over other games

jdktech20104851d ago

what's really advanced over other games? It's pretty similar to KZ2 other than changing where you have the classes unlocked right away.

Still the same modes and even operations mode is just scripted Warzone (and no different from Halo's Invasion with cut scenes)

The beta is fun and I'm gonna buy it I'm truly curious about your comment

kramun4851d ago

Maybe it's just not as good as the MP in other games.

xAlmostPro4850d ago

whats good is how well in runs while so much is happening at once and looking so good while doing so.

The warzone playlist i've only seen in killzone.. where theres like 6 objective games rolled into one big game which is awesome..

the operations is pretty cool where it plays out like a story mission with the guys who play best being highlighted..

adavanced more so techinically but its still alot more impressive than say.. COD,MoH and even bfbc2 imo

Either way you look at it, the multiplayer is great and better than it was in killzone 2 yet its not being praised in 7/10 reviews

dragunrising4850d ago (Edited 4850d ago )

Way to be objective Mr. Fanboy. How about being a little bit more descriptive for those people that haven't played the beta yet?

My impressions:

The controls are quite improved over Killzone 2 and Move support is arguably the best yet. The graphics are clearly better and the map is bright, detailed and quite big. The same multiplayer modes are back, although, why change what isn't broken? Overall, I would say I'm impressed. I already have my copy reserved through Playstation Home (via Amazon) and look forward to putting some more time into the beta.

Edit: For those playing with Move, did you keep the base configuration or customize? I ended up shrinking the dead zone, increasing turn speed, and upping sensitivity to 40%. Anyone care to share?

visualb4850d ago

graphics aside, I think its really become streamlined and smoothed out.

I love the new weapons, and the new feel the game has

simple rule:

like KZ2? Love KZ3. Still prefer KZ2? keep it and get KZ3 and enjoy it for what it is

its not KZ2, its not Halo or COD, its Killzone 3 with its own feel and vibe.

I love it, and will love to add it to my library (and I don't enjoy FPS that much)

DigitalAnalog4850d ago (Edited 4850d ago )

But I hope this is an "old" build. Since the original problems the previous beta had were the recoil and the "quick zoom", and quite frankly, I'm not to keen having my M60 accurately shooting without going all over the place.

**On a side note, I had to drop the sensitivity to 20%, sometimes 10% because I find it to be too un-Killzoninsh for me.

-End of Line

PS3n3604850d ago

The beta is really good. I think they nailed the controls on this one. PS3 now has its definitive online shooter. So stoked.

This is a K3 Article. The author didn't even mention Crysis.

TKCMuzzer4851d ago

It's nice to see some outfits holding out to give a review of the product and not the bits they want to. Multiplayer makes up a big part of this product and it's the product that should be reviewed.
Nice little read.

ugabugaz4851d ago

Two things I don't like.

The controls are floaty, I like them heavy.
The tactician spawn grenades aren't there anymore, or I just haven't found them yet. I want my damn green flare!

Loved everything else and I'll be buying Day -1. That's right, negative day, It's that good!

realplayer824851d ago

you have to use tactician to capture the spawn points now

ugabugaz4851d ago

Yeah, I found that out. Dunno why they changed that, It made the game more fun with nades, for me anyway.
I guess perhaps people exploited it, I don't know.

realplayer824851d ago

yeah i remember in kz2 people would just through them into the room with the objective and it would become a cluster f*** lol

Mr Tretton4851d ago

The spawn nades gave people, good AND bad players too much freedom.

I remember people crying about the change, and it's like, yes, it helped you at times, but think of all the times those nades ruined a match? More harm than good.

visualb4850d ago

@ ugabugaz

GG mentioned they felt the spawn grenades just caused mayhem and created choke points

it was a wise decision to remove them, most games just abused them in the wrong way =|

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 4850d ago
Dark General4850d ago

If you ever played with good tacticians in KZ2 (like me) you'll sorely miss the grenades. To tell the truth the only reason the spawn nades got ruined was once they got rid of the spawn invincibility when you spawned from them. Either way no use complaining since they aren't going to change them back I just hope they add more spawn beacons in the maps. It should at least be one near each side of the map along with others in neutral positions of the map.

FunAndGun4850d ago

Yeah, a good tactician could be a real game changer.

I think they should have kept them in the game but maybe limit where they could be thrown. They wouldn't work if thrown inside the radius of an objective or too close to the enemy spawn. Something like that could have worked maybe.

I will miss the mobile spawn points but I won't miss the cluster ucks they created most of the time.

ugabugaz4850d ago

I was a very good tactician myself, and that's why I miss the Spawn Grenades. I do remember when they added the spawn invulnerability, and at the time the community in large part wanted it. Again I know why they were removed, but I just wish they weren't.

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138374d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim374d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC374d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138374d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle374d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger373d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy374d ago (Edited 374d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

potatoseal373d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1125d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1125d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1125d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1125d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1125d ago
Vegamyster1124d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1124d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1124d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1124d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1124d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip

Top 10 PS3 Games We Hope Come Back On PS5

Resistance, Dead Space franchise, Splatterhouse, Lollipop Chainsaw, Brutal Legends, Alice Madness Returns, Enslaved Journey to the West, Mass Effect franchise. Also wouldn't mind seeing a new Wild Arms game remake or HD remaster, the Xenosaga trilogy, a new Parasite Eve, a new Dino Crisis just too many games to list that are forgotten and left in the dark now adays.

Sciurus_vulgaris1302d ago

The PS3 is difficult to emulate. PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 would require translation from PowerPC to x86. Additionally the PS5 likely would have to mimic the PS3’s GPU and CPU.

**Luster Network

This is what pops up on my web browser. So I can't even read the site. So, forget that. They don't need my data.

But let's get something straight. OG Xbox had around 1,001 games. How many are BC on Series X? **39** THIRTY NINE. Come on! That's wack BC. You can't tell me that's a complete list. Talking about commitment. Game preservation. Ridiculous. Covers nothing.

How many games released on Xbox 360? Around 2085. How many are BC?
568. That's it. Around 1,517 are **MISSING** Stop playing. Tired of that nonsense.

Anyway, the only games I really want from PS3 that would be awesome are Motorstorm and MGS4. I'll take BC. I'll take a remaster. I'll take a remake. If not those, then Killzone 2. And in VR, maybe Sports Champions, House of the Dead Overkill and the Time Crisis games.

That's all I need. But we've gone over BC again and again in every possible way. It wasn't that important because Sony sold 115 million consoles without it. That's proof enough with no outcry. And PS5 has damn near all 4,000+ PS4 games BC. It's not PS1,PS2 and PS3. But that's plenty. I'll take more but you get what you get.
