Why Didn't Enslaved Sell Like It Deserved?

Enslaved got some great praise from critics but sold less than 500,000 copies worldwide, CaptainStarBall wonders why..

Because it was way too short and didn't give players a reason to play again after beating it.

Biggest4835d ago

Ninja Theory can't win for losing. They made a great game in Heavenly Sword. They were disappointed in the sales and decided not only to go multiplatform, but to bash Heavenly Sword while promoting the multiplatform offering. Are they going to bash both games while making their next game? Will they even find funding to make a new game?

morganfell4835d ago

I own and played both titles. Enslaved has none of the magic that I find in Heavenly Sword. Is multiplatform to blame? I don't know.

I just know that Heavenly Sword is an epic game and Enslaved is...well...remind me why I haven't traded that game.

Blaine4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

@Biggest

Your comment is absolutely true... and it wouldn't sting so much if their next project wasn't to ruin DEVIL MAY CRY.

There's no keys on my keyboard to represent the anger this makes me feel, and I don't want to swear up a storm, so I'll keep my composure: fuck you Capcom.

StanLee4835d ago

Enslaved wasn't that great a game. I loved the story and character development but the constant hand holding, mundane combat and the lack of any real exploration made it a game you didn't want to play again. In the future, a game like Enslaved would make a great digital offering at a $20 price tag. It's not a $60 game, it just offers too little.

NeoBasch4835d ago

Well, it's not like Heavenly Sword was that great either. Granted, Enslaved was worse and definitely not as good as the media made it out to be, but HS wasn't some pearl either. I loved the direction, but the gameplay needed some work.

Yi-Long4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

... after reading and hearing about quite boring/easy platforming and uninspired fighting.

I want to be challenged, AND the challenge has to keep being fun to play. And stay fun during the whole game.

Games like Super Meat Boy, Ninja Gaiden Black, Mario Galaxy, Batman AA, and a whole bunch of others manage to do that, so why would I waste my money on a game that can't!?

BattleAxe4834d ago

Because Ninja Theory bitched so much about how bad the sales for Heavenly Sword were because they released it on PS3, now "karma" has come back to bite them in the ass.

DigitalAnalog4834d ago (Edited 4834d ago )

You take a game, from a developer who constantly compares itself with ND, followed by bashing the sales of their original franchise; and then proceeds to develop an inferior port on the PS3 (despite having a solid experience on Heavenly Sword).

This is where the hammer 'hits' the proverbial "nail":

They deliberately removed the surround sound features on the PS3. THE VERY THING that the PS3 has over it's competitors.

And you wonder why they don't make sales?

Unremarkable games are unremarkable. What I mean is that the game really didn't do well to speak to the broad consumer market of gamers and instead only spoke to the typically hardcore gaming market.

It's not a bad game, but it's not one that stood out for doing anything in particular or using a recognizable franchise/IP. If you're going to go out with a new IP like this, you need to promote it very well to get it to sell, this just never happened.

klado4835d ago

Next? DMC, it is not the game that sucks, IT IS NINJA THEORY...time to leave the field for fresh mind.

cheeseman784832d ago

Call of duty is short but people keep buying that one now don't they.

Kamikaze1354832d ago

Because it has an online mode, which is reason enough to replay the game after you've done through the story. Plus, many people don't even bother with the story and buy the game solely for the online portion.

Octo14835d ago

Because some "gaming journalist" dubbed it the "Uncharted 2 killer".

ilikestuff4835d ago

agreed, they hyped up a poop game, honestly, the entire time i played the demo, which i couldnt finish, all i could think was enslaved seems to be a crap version of uncharted

voodoopickle4835d ago

I couldnt force myself to finish the demo either. really thought it was a crap ass game, and i dont thing it should be mentioned in the same article as beyond good and evil

FailOverHero4835d ago

I will pay you money if you could post just 1 link to any article, rumour, screenshot, video, opinion piece or even forum discussion where the term Uncharted 2 Killer was used to describe this game. Just ONE, PLEASE

MysticStrummer4835d ago

Calm down. He shouldn't have put that in quotes. They said the animations looked better than Uncharted, which then got morphed into just plain looking better than Uncharted by other articles and the geniuses on N4G. Uncharted, UC2, and Heavenly Sword all looked and played better than Enslaved. I enjoyed the game, but it was a letdown overall.

bluwulf4834d ago

Well, it wasn't an Uncharted 2 killer. So no, there will be no documents saying that, but it was referred to as Uncharted 2 killer as this article cites:

"Overall, Enslaved is a fun ride; while it lasts. And although it has more than a passing resemblance to last years Uncharted 2, it is not the Uncharted 2 "killer" many hoped it would be. "

@ FailOverHero

Bluwulf does deserve some money for that. Pay the man.

And Enslaved was good. Really good ending too. It's good if you just wanted something different.

Ninja Theory runs there mouth too much that is why.

WildArmed4835d ago

Honestly, if I HAD to pick one, It'd be this for me I guess.
I was disappointed how they treated my purchase of heavy sword..
They always seemed to whine more about the amount of sales they DIDN'T get, as opposed to appreciate the amount it DID.

Well, that's why I rented enslaved.
So great job NT.

Drac4835d ago

After the way they B***hed about the PS3 community for Heavenly sword lack of sales, which weren't that bad for a release game. (I know I got it and enjoyed it).

I decide they weren't getting my cash again cause I didn't need to be whined at again.

FailOverHero4835d ago (Edited 4835d ago )

You really believe that people were mad at NT?? lol. Most people don't even know, let alone care what company makes a game, as long as it is what they like.
Remember when Activision said all those mean things about not supporting ps3?? Remember how the sales for the following Call of Duty dropped to below 500k total because of it? No? Well thats because that part didn't happen. Why? Because most gamers didn't give a rats behind what activision said about sony, they just wanted to play games.
Believe it or not, most gamers are actually NOT fanboys. Most gamers PLAY GAMES because they are FUN and not because the sticker says only on xxx console.
Then again you wouldn't know this if n4g is your world

VenGencE9994834d ago

So because you spend YOUR money foolishly on a game WITHOUT knowing what you're buying, you think MOST people do the same? lol, I don't know if you're being arrogant or ingnorant, but me thinks you're wrong.

And believe it or not most gamers ARE fanboys. They are a fan of a certain genre/console/controller/featu re, whatever. It is this favorism that makes US all fanboys.
Hell, there are a million other things WE all could be doing, but guess what, we are in a forum, debating about OUR hobby.

Whether you agree or not is dependent upon your definition of said word...

Aclay4835d ago

"Ninja Theory runs there mouth too much that is why. "
Completely agree

I remember seeing article like these:

http://n4g.com/news/499228/...

http://n4g.com/news/615475/...

http://n4g.com/news/431167/...

The stuff they said (particulary Tameem Antoniades) leading up to release really didn't help their cause, especially to the PS3 fanbase that bought Heavenly Sword early on like me.

Even though I was tired of hearing them complain and moan, I still bought Enslaved though...but not until I saw it on sale on Amazon for $25 last November, and ended up paying just $15 after using a $10 Pre-order Credit.

I still haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but it's ironic how Ninja Theory was using exclusivity to blame for Heavenly Sword's lower-than-wanted sales, but Enslaved is multiplatform and will probably be lucky to even hit 1 Million lifetime, which would be quite a bit less than Heavenly Sword's 1.5 million....I wonder what in the world they're going to come up with to explain why they think Enslaved didn't sell.

BLACKBOIJONES4835d ago

lol...The game sucks, its average at best nothing special.Average game average sales.

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming19d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long19d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple10118d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor19d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6919d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming19d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno19d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming18d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

The 10 worst PC ports that ruined otherwise great video games

From Xfire: "It's not unusual to see the occasional bad PC port, but these ones make the bad PC ports look great in comparison."

Kados1025d ago

To be fair with GTAIV, it was a very CPU bound game, released at a time when the vast majority of PC gamers still believed that the CPU was nearly irrelevant, and that you only needed a good GPU. 95% of "gaming" builds back then were using turds for CPUs.

Giblet_Head1025d ago (Edited 1025d ago )

Ya, 2005-2010 was an interesting period. Entry/mid level CPUs have come a long way since then.

RonsonPL1025d ago (Edited 1025d ago )

The "majority" is still just as dumb as before. The game was simply f...d.
It had micro-stutters and never ever ran properly. People who say otherwise simply couldn't see the microstutter because of their LCD display's blurry motion. It should fly in 85fps or 100fps on fastest CPU back then, but it didn't. It was a buggy, awful port. I had a CPU over twice as fast as what x360 had. A GPU 5x as fast. And I couldn't do anything to make it run perfectly.
I don't know who's fault was this. Maybe it was not the developers alone. Maybe it was because of the drivers and the fact nobody gave a flying f..k about stable, high framerate on a PC game. We've had two different OSes then, and as I pointed out, microstutters were not that obvious on an LCD. There was no Digital Foundry to point such problems out and not many people still played on CRT monitors to be able to notice the problem (in like 2 seconds of playing, seriously, you don't need any tools. It just hits your eyes like a speeding truck)

GTA V continued the tradition. It manages the CPU resources so badly, it basically cannot run at locked 144fps till this day, or even 60fps in stereoscopic 3D mode (so 2x 60fps per second) because it's so dependant on single core performance and because it's so messed up by either port devs or Nvidia (who said they will fix it, then 3 years of promises led to shutting the forums down, which solved the problem in their eyes - no one complains anymore ;)

GTA III port was never optimized for even 60fps, not to mention 100 or 120.
The port of GTA V was hidden in their cabinet for almost 3 years, during which PC gamers were bein lied to about it.

See the pattern yet?
Yeah. They don't give a shit about PC gaming or assume a buggy, stuttery mess is good enough, as long as people keep buying the games.

Actually... to think of it. They didn't make a proper Lemmings game for PC either. There was Amiga version and that's it. Only later on they mercifully released Lemmings: Tribes sequel. Until then PC gamers could only dream about digitized (real recorded audio) sounds and music. So this tradition of shitting onto PC gamers is now 30 years old ;)
