Killzone 3 Most Realistic Snow Ever?

Killzone 3's snow effects look to be some of the most realistic ever, and may even be better than the snow in Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2.

SnakeMustDie5294d ago

Maybe. I haven't seen a snow as good as what I saw on the beta. Maybe there are some on the PC.

gaffyh5293d ago

Crysis on highest setting on PC would be the best on PC, but the article does refer to consoles in particular

crxss5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

Doesn't guerrilla know that snow is so last year? Sand is clearly the new snow ;) lol but who really cares it all looks good. I bet we'll see more fog/mist for 2012 or even better a freaking volcano!

never_waste_a_bullet5293d ago

seriously how do you have disagrees?

Bhai5293d ago

...Killzone snow is clearly even better than Crysis, haven't seen Crysis snow doing anything spectacular at all, also the footprints are not as detailed as KZ ones:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

On a last note, best ice effects are still the Uncharted-2 ones. Crysis ice effects are once again less than spectacular. Please post Crysis snow and ice vids to prove the point ;)

SnakeMustDie5293d ago

I'm kinda skeptical about the snow in Crysis. It indeed looks awesome but there are things on the KZ3 beta that looks better and vice versa.

thor5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

@Bhai

Good video. The techniques they are using seem to be quite simple but clever; overlaying a footprint texture that has some parallax depth from a shader. It's not above and beyond what, say, Uncharted 2 does, and Crysis may do it as well but I'm not sure.

The water effects don't look great though when the wave meets the shore - with waves that size you'd expect huge amounts of water to come splashing up with each wave as it travels across the shore. I can only see small splashes.

@Killzone 3 Most Realistic Snow Ever?

Yes

thereapersson5293d ago

So I'm sure that GG probably got a little help from Naughty Dog, and vice versa when ND was developing Uncharted 2.

That's the magic of having such a versatile first and second-party studio lineup.

Spydiggity5293d ago

i was in the beta (thanks to the india exploit), and while i certainly found the game to be extremely visually busy, i did not find the game to be visually impressive.

some people (especially fanboys) seem to get those 2 things mixed up a lot.

the_best_player5293d ago

@Spydiggity
Then you must find 360 games look like shit then if you don't think KZ3 looks good LOL!

otherZinc5293d ago

How about Killzone 3 making the most expansive go anywhere campaign co-op "Ever"?

BrianB5293d ago

actually i've found Alan Wake and Dead Space to be more visually striking than Killzone 2 and 3 they just don't really wow me, ands thats just MY OPINION. KZ3 doesnt impresss me.

heroprotagonist5293d ago

@BrianB

I agree. Alan Wake felt so much more like a living place. Killzone 2 felt kind of sterile and synthetic to me.

Spydiggity5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

unlike you, i don't criticize the quality of a game because i support the opposing system. i own both "next gen" consoles and don't find either particularly impressive (visually).

just cuz i said a game on the system you're clearly obsessed with doesn't impress me, doesn't mean i love the other system. you're just a pathetic fanboy...just like most of the members of this sad community. and because of that, you're incapable of understanding this very simple concept.

Killzone 3 Most Realistic Snow Ever?

Ans:- No. And its a post processing effect not rendered real time.

Crysis Most Realistic Snow Ever?

Ans:- Yes. And its rendered in-game as physics effects.

finbars755293d ago

He said console dont get your panties in a knot.I dont see how you can say its the best snow anyways when the game cant even run on any PC at full compacity?Other then that KZ3 has the best snow on ANY CONSOLE and crysis2 isnt looking all the great right now.Its like looking at one big shiny plastic looking world.Just horrible.keep it real GG.

pixelsword5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

meetajhu, I'm sure since you work at both Crytek and Guerrilla Games that you would know exactly what they're doing and how?

Besides, he's not talking about the snow falling, although it doesn't matter if the post processing looks just as good; he's talking about the snow on the ground.

thereapersson5293d ago

Just ignore meetajhu. He's one of the many internet "armchair developers" that spout off technical jargon and concepts they learn via Beyond3D and Digital Foundry, then proceed to act as if they have been in the software development industry for years.

It would help the cause of people like that if they would provide evidence of their "higher learning" and experience, but alas they will never do so because in essence, they are really just full of shit.

wissam5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

@ below. In Russia fanboys detect you.

Silly gameAr5293d ago

When people try to bring PC into a console topic, it's best just to let them talk like what they say matters.

Spydiggity5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

not sure why you have so many disagrees. this is absolutely true. most console games have to trick you into seeing nice visuals. the post processing in these AAA console titles is staggering.

and while the article does go on to say it's referring to console, it's still an unfair title designed to inspire this kind of arguing and to get hits. just like 98% of the articles that make it to the top of n4g every day. it's a joke.

@pixelsword: all you have to do is LOOK at the two games to see the difference between physical interaction and post processing, non-interactive effects. quit being an apologist (though i know that's impossible for you since you've actually msged me on ps3 just to carry on arguments in the past).

heroprotagonist5293d ago

"It would help the cause of people like that if they would provide evidence of their "higher learning" and experience, but alas they will never do so because in essence, they are really just full of shit."

Kind of like you.

It's only ok for you to act like you know something, right DB?

pixelsword5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

@ spydiggity:

Uh, I don't remember ya or what was even said, sorry if it was that important to ya that you would remember but if I did it wasn't for me.

How did I even get your PSN unless you gave it to me, because everyone knows my PSN... so I don't really know how I would have messaged you at all.

Spydiggity5293d ago

i'd guess it's cuz my PSN and 360 SN's are clearly labeled on my profile.

pixelsword5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

And so is mine; and you probably messaged me first since you jumped into a discussion and brought that up for who knows what reason because it seems to fit your "personality".

Anyways, since you obviously think you have a point when you have none, here's a clip of Crysis:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

At what point will anyone go "well, Killzone had batter snow on the ground in terms of motion, movement, blood on the snow, details and leaving tracks in the snow, but MY GOD Crysis really had it dropping so real that it overrides every good point Killzone's snow had.

What did I say about PC fans and their tired argument?

http://n4g.com/news/666937/...

Ahem, thank you!

Foliage5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

After being behind the scenes of a video game developer for over 4 years, you start seeing things much differently than someone looking from the outside in.

Such as:

Crysis might have the better requirements, and has really no max in terms of computing standards when it was released, but you can't judge visuals on tech alone. You can have the best tech in the world, but a better developer with less tech can make something look much better. You don't judge visuals on tech, you judge it on visuals. In the end it is all a matter of preference.

Sure knowing what Crysis is doing behind the scenes seems staggering, but when you realize how poorly it was utilized in the game and how bland the game was as a whole, suddenly a game like Uncharted that didn't even utilize all the specs available to them, and yet created something better looking IMO. Is much more impressive.

The argument isn't which game had better specs, since obviously computers are constantly upgrading every other week with more of a maximum ceiling. The argument is what "looks" better. Physics does not make something better looking, I can animate something to mimic physics and create something much more better looking. Physics are unpredictable, look at death solutions only using ragdolls and you will fully understand what I am getting at. You cannot guarantee your final solution when using physics, you can when using scripting and canned animations. Uncharted and Killzone both utilize both, and the results are much better than the bland Crysis results IMO.

Crysis is a tech demo, and a developer like Naughty Dog could really create something incredible with the tools they had available to them, but you need more than tech to create something the standards of Uncharted 3. If you don't think the developer matters and it is all tech, than ask yourself why every Unreal game ever made has varied so greatly in quality based on who made the game.

It's the developer that matters, not the tech. Look at Team Ico.

Thats a tough one. Uncharted 2's snow looks AMAZING and I didn't get the chance to play killzone 3 (BETA) on my HDTV. But from the looks of it GG has really outdone themselves.

FrankMcSpank5293d ago

I would say that the Beta and Uncharted 2 are tied. I believe the final build of KZ3 will take UC2. Of course UC3 has taken Water and Fire and Earth(Sand) to level I have never ever seen, even in Crysis. It's great how GG and ND compete. It really creates great games when internal devs share and compete.

Nothing like shooting a guy in KZ3, and the blood splatters all over the snow. Or running through a doorway and see snow drifts collecting in the corners. Only about 50 days left...

blumatt5293d ago

I think we'll have to wait and see the full game of KZ3 to really judge whether it has trumped Uncharted 2 in that regard. Having said that, I do believe the snow effects in the KZ3 beta were pretty damn nice. The particle effects of the snow blowing around looked pretty nice and didn't take too much of a hit on the framerate.

King_many_layers5293d ago

no tie about it...

Killzone 2's looks better, BUT it does dissapear from the surface much quicker than UC2's. Atleast it did so in the beta.

-Alpha5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

Who cares about snow? I want Jungle! Lush green foliage pwns a sea of white.

Blizzards in UC2 and K3 on the other hand are very nice

Hazmat135293d ago

YES when Crysis did it it was god like when i heard CRysis2 for PS3 360 i was like jungle FTW!!! until the i seen the trailer... I WANT CRYSIS 2 DEMO!!!!

Mr Tretton5293d ago

Hey Alpha Male, that's not what the jungle is going to be like in KZ3. It's going to be dark and evil looking.

DoomeDx5293d ago

^Yeah i know..to bad though :(

Ill just up the Saturation of my TV :D

hesido5293d ago

I hope the foliage in the forest levels are interactive (that is, the leaves should move when you step on them etc etc.)

beavis4play5293d ago

alpha - i don't necessarily agree - early on in UC2 (right around the train area) there was a gun battle in a blizzard. the wind whipping the snow to make a "moving cover" that obscured the line of sight and made an awesome experience. i'd love to see a level in KZ3 fighting helghast in a blizzard - it's a very unique situation.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic211d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23211d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger202d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1528d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1528d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1528d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1528d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1528d ago
Vegamyster1528d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1528d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1528d ago (Edited 1528d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Shane Kim1528d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1528d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1528d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip
