CVG Preview: Killzone 3: The best PS3 shooter ever?

One thing's clear playing Killzone 3. Guerrilla listen to the fans. Like, really listen. Almost every niggle, grip and criticism from Killzone 2 seems to have been addressed in the threequel.

And nowhere more than in the multi-player. The first obvious tweak is the much friendlier movement. Forget clomping around like a lead footed klutz because motion is now far more natural.

it is better to phrase it: "Killzone 3: The best PS3 shooter so far?" Then you would have a better chance for a logical answer.

To proclaim something is the 'best ever' implies there could NEVER be anything better. That is absurd when it comes to games. We know there will be improvements to the hardware. There will be advancements on the graphical techniques, etc.

Having played KZ2 I would expect KZ3 to have improvements to what KZ2 did right and even additions that were inspired from other shooters.

There will never be a true 'best ever' unless the genre all of a sudden stopped and you had to pick from those that have been made up to that point. Then you could have your definitive "best ever".

I was an extremely vocal KZ2 player who absolutely HATED the inaccuracy of the input timing issue (and I was 100% right from the start if I do say so)...now with that said, the KZ3 beta has nullified absolutely ANY doubts/previous problems I had.

KZ3 is shaping up to be a VERY immersive/competitive shooter because it has what is needed ~ Graphics, Sound, Story, Scale, Accuracy and lastly FUN. Give it at least a rental before you automatically say "you know you won't like it".

@maideninBlack kz2 single player was fine, multiplayer got old fast because it was too long sessions and took ages to level up, now if you played on the beta you would know they have made the controls easier and faster (alot more like cod), and the multiplayer sessions are short and it's easier to level up now, i love kz3!!

I think what makes a good game is good characters.

There are very few games out there with characters that I care about.

Unfortunately, the KZ franchise has only a few memorable characters. Two, for me. Visari and Rico. And Rico is memorable because he's a shitty character that hasn't been killed off yet. He's just fucking annoying.

Half Life 2 I think will still be a better game, but I do hope that GG trumps it some day because they have the technical skills. They just need a good story with good characters.

You make some good points Kavet. The KZ franchise would certainly be improved with a more compelling story. However, they repeatedly said that they were inspired by Hollywood "B" movies such as Starship Troopers. I don't think they were aiming for a sophisticated storyline.

no, it won't...killzone 2 was amazing but a few months after people stop playing it, no one is playing kz2 right now and if you want to be the best shooter of all time you need to have the best online exprience of all time and right now the killzone franquise is not famous for it online gameplay, only the superb graphics.

Just look halo and cod online community, is huge! and people don't stop to play it until a new version comes out. Killzone doesn't have that and nobody knows if kz3 will reach that... personaly i doubt it.

KZ will never have an online community as large as the Halo community for a few reasons:

1) It is a darker, grittier, ultra-violent FPS Franchise. This means that it will appeal a more mature audience, which is smaller than the audience for Halo;

2) There are far more options for online multi-player on the PS3 than there is on the XBOX, therefore the online community on the PS3 is more fragmented;

3) Many gamers will play the single player campaign, but will be turned off by the MP because of its difficulty compared to more mainstream shooters.

Don't get me wrong, I think that the online MP is going to be awesome, but I do not believe that Halo should be used as a yardstick to measure its success. They are two completely different games and appeal to different segments of the market.

KZ3 will be a day 1 purchase for me!

The gamers will decide if its the best if they decide to purchase. Sales will tell the tale. If you think differently then you are a dumb fanboy. The best games sell the most because its what the public wants. Whether or not a game is good is a individual opinion. Individuals are the people the buy the game right!! Metacritic, AAA, GOTY awards, online reviews don't really mean sh*t in the grand scheme of things. So what if a reviewer thinks that Gran Turismo or Halo sucks. That is only one possible sale compared to millions more it can get.

can anyone in the beta tell me how the controls are in KZ3 compared to KZ2? the controls in KZ2 is what put me off from that game and im wondering if it imporved. Is it more fluid? are there no more dead zones? How bout aim down the sigts? i remember using sights was was real difficult in the previous game. im not asking for COD like motion, i dont mind a heavy feel if controls are accurate and precise. really excited for this game. anyone who responds gets bubbles! :D

If you hated the controls in KZ2 then you'll probably love them in KZ3. You may not be asking for a CoD feel of the controls but that's exactly what you're getting in KZ3. You still have weight to your character but the weight is only when you crouch & jump. This is just the beta though so maybe they will add more weight and better recoil in the final version of the game. I was in the KZ2 beta and don't remember there being any weight in the controls then so I guess they add in a lot of stuff later. I think you'll aim down the sights more in KZ3 but at the same time they've removed custom games & server lists to replace it with matchmaking for some reason.

KZ has now become a quality shooter franchise but is far from the best.

When it starts producing things that all other FPS developers copy or make as a standard feature, then maybe then you could say it's the best.

The Best PS3 shooter is kinda a stupid thing to say. The PS3 has yet to have a truly great Exclusive Shooter. KZ2 was a huge letdown, not to mention a bunch of others.

You can compare review score all you want fanboys, the proof is in how popular a franchise is over time. KZ2's MP was dead in less then a year, a freaking year. Games Like COD and Halo keep going strong for years. Hell Halo 2 had a large community going up until a few months ago.

I love my PS3, but for shooters I stick to my 360, it is just better for them, better controller, and better online.

yeah I also am a little worried digital ,it seems they have removed all the hardcoreness about it ,i loved the fact that the guns kicked as much as they did ,it gave it a more tatical feel to it rather than just spraying and praying ....it set it apart from other shooters and now it's kinda going the way of resistance 2...bummer well I'll still buy it but mostly for the single player let's hope they take the concerns of the people who gave killzone it's start to begin with though rather than catering to the masses who probably in all reality won't even pick it up lol.

As a PC gamer I would put Killzone 3 in the top 10 of best FPS ever on any platform. I have played Killzone 2 to death and have played enough of Killzone 3 beta to appreciate the improvements and advancement of the series. Sure KZ3 isn't out yet but all GG has to do is improve KZ2 and thus KZ3 would replace KZ2 in my top ten FPS.

Some may not like KZ for it's weighty and realistic movements but you can't deny the graphic tour de force of this series or the intense action it provides on an epic scale. The Helghast AI uses tactics and is pretty challenging and the game play feels vivid unlike the generic waves of repetitive enemies in other shooters (insert MW2 here).

KZ3 isn't an arcade shooter like MW2 and isn't simple like Halo so it may not appeal to a lot of casual gamers but KZ is easily the best console shooter to me because it's the one I wish was on PC.

If your trying to dog KZ2 for not selling like Halo or COD remember two things...

1. Ford sells more Mustangs than Ferrari sells Enzos so does that make a Mustang better than a Ferrari Enzo? NO and don't even kid yourself.
2. PS3 owners are diverse gamers which shows why Sony's Exclusives move across all genres of gaming unlike the 360 where the owners mostly only play shooters (insert Alan Wake sales figures here) so Halo and COD are gonna sell big. Put KZ2 on the 360 and ALL you FANBOYS know you would buy it.
3. KZ2 had a bit of controller lag, some not liking the weighty movements is a personnel preference but other than that you can't bash KZ2 without looking like an idiot rabid FANBOI.

The beta is the best PS3 shooter ever so far in my opinion. I logged in enough time to get 2800 kills and I am chomping at the bit to get it back. Much better than KZ2 honestly. The exoskeletons are too overpowered, by like 35% and the Infiltraitor needs a bit of nerfing, but it is fantastic overall.
