Metroid: Other M - Crush! Frag! Review!

CFD!'s John DeLuca shares his thoughts on this strange, new entry in the Metroid series:

"In case you couldn’t tell from what I’ve said thus far, Metroid: Other M is a deeply flawed game. If you can get past the melodramatic story and occasionally frustrating gameplay sections, though, you’ll find a game with a satisfying combat system and epic boss encounters. It ultimately falls short of the craftsmanship of the other Metroid games, but it succeeds in its own way by offering the most visceral and engaging combat in the series. At its best, Other M delivers battles that are on par with any of the best action games out there — Metroid or otherwise — and that, if nothing else, makes it worth the hassle."

This game is definitely in my backlog... but my Reach addiction is making that backlog pretty fucking big. There will probably be a sequel before I get around to this one.

ShadowPraxis4895d ago

Same here, sans Reach addiction. I still haven't finished the freakin' Prime games yet.

RobsteinOne4896d ago

I hate to judge a game without playing it, but I just can't get past the butchering of Samus' character.

ChickeyCantor4895d ago

Its not butchered,
People like you made her up, you people made her an emotionless bitch. You butchered her =P

From the beginning Samus had personal issues. Not just in Other M.

RobsteinOne4894d ago

There's a big difference between "emotionless" and "badass."

The issue I have with it is that I've always seen Samus as a woman who's been through hell (lost her parents, raised by alien birds, etc...) but managed to use all of those experiences to turn her into one of, if not the, toughest bounty hunter in the galaxy.

Hearing about her breaking down into a quivering mass of tears and "BAAAWWWW!" at the mere sight of Ridley (whom she'd killed... what, like twice at that point?) broke my brain a little.

And turning someone into an endlessly droning, petulant, subservient gimp does not equal character development.

JD_Shadow4894d ago

"OMG! She has CHARACTER FLAWS! That cannot be!! Nintendo, NERF HER INTO MASTER CHIEF!!! BAWWWWLLL!!"

PLEASE get off of it! That's why the game seems to fail to some of you people!

Like how vets are going into overdrive when they get strangled by their memories of war? The war is over right?

I love all the "you people" comments.

And I stand by what I've said. I have no problem with character flaws, but the flaws they've given Samus in Other M seem to have come out of nowhere.

And on the topic of Master Chief, he sucks as a character.

samus had the same personality in metroid fusion.it just wasn't cg and voice acted out.

RobsteinOne4893d ago

She wasn't forced to ignore her various abilities until her "boss" told her she could use them again.

Giantsquirrel4895d ago

There's no way I'm playing this. Sorry, but I really have an anti-Japan gaming attitude right now.

ShadowPraxis4895d ago

You have a fairly anti-everything attitude lately, sir :P

tigresa4895d ago

Interesting target audience you singled out there for Other M...

Venoxn4g4895d ago

some of you are idiots, just because you didn't try it yourselves.. it's japan+english collaboration..try it, good action packed gameplay with good graphics and it's a true sequel to Super metroid.. story in this one is very good ... really try it, now it's price has been decresed.. there's no better time to buy it..

ShadowPraxis4895d ago

Soooooo... I'm getting the feeling you're saying we should try it. ;P

Nioh games definitely up there at the top alongside Ninja Gaiden BLK.

LoveSpuds468d ago

There is a decent fan base for the Nioh games, but still think they are criminally overlooked and under appreciated.

I just bought the PS5 collection to replay them again with all their DLC, a sweet collection for my games shelf for sure.

Yea, those gardens haven't been plowed in over 10 years now though. Imagine if they cultivated it, let it grow again.

Starman69468d ago

Amazing what ya can do with a samurai sword lol 🤣

tehpees3468d ago

The honourable mention though.

TheSenorCheese468d ago

originally it wasn't going to be included because of their take on Samus' character. But the gameplay's actually not bad.

Vits467d ago

Honestly, I don't know if we can even blame them for that take. Nintendo's Sakamoto was credited as the writer and from what we learned later with the Retro Studios interviews for the Prime series, Nintendo apparently never saw Samus as this stoic badass that most of the west imagined her as. Going as far as describing her as "motherly".

shinoff2183468d ago

Ninja Gaiden was dope but I don't really care for alot of their games.

Reggie originally thought Metroid: Other M would be a "killer moment" for the series

Well it almost killed Metroid so…

PhillyDillyDee713d ago

Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

Terry_B713d ago

Sometimes, I doubt that Reggie was that great for Nintendo after all.

2D Metroid Retrospective: Bring on the Remakes

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."

Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.

INMATEofARKHAM932d ago

I just want them all in the Switch.
