E3 2010: PlayStation Move Pwns Xbox 360 Kinect - Techland

By Peter Ha:

Let's get this out of the way – Sony will dominate the next generation motion control wars.
Calm down, fanboy. I've been a long-time supporter of Microsoft's Xbox platform, so it pains me to say that. But I've seen a few things the public haven't been privy to and spent extensive time with both platforms. While Sony did an incredible job trying to convert this self-proclaimed Xbox fanboy weeks ago, it wasn't until I spent an adequate amount of time with Kinect that I saw the light.

I been telling people for a year now that PlayStation Move was the better game controller. now it looks like everyone can see for themselves.

saint_john_paul_ii5210d ago

aparently it isnt, according some idiots from the media, who perhaps were bribed recently with free xboxes.

the ps move is the better device period. no need to scroll down to see anything, just take my advice right here right now, watch sony's e3 2010 press conferance ( sorcery ) ( socom ) and you will understand. thanks ;)

Raz5210d ago

That's the thing with console gamers - competition and aggressive behavior are traits that make us good players, so no wonder fanboy wars ensue. It's a bigger game on a bigger playing field, and in the end everyone wins as game companies (and their fans) vie with each other for first place.

And clearly, Sony has already won this round. PWNED!

clarkdef5210d ago

Most sense I have heard in ages, we love to compete lol

whoelse5210d ago

He mentioned a good point about AAA titles. Why would developers use a lot of their resources for a control system that only a small percentage of all 360 have. At least with the Move they can easily integrate it into almost all games!

callahan095210d ago

Such a good article. He tells it like it is. I agree 100%.

PyReX-5210d ago

I wouldnt be surprised if we saw a " Move is better, connect sucks" article...or vice versa

sikbeta5210d ago (Edited 5210d ago )

You know what's the Worst thing, there are some dudes bringing sales already, despite the fact the none of the 2 devises are out for sell and there are others in denial cheerleading kinect and proud of the MS Conference at E3, it's just unbelievable, I mean in the 2 shows of MS there wasn't anything for those "core" members but that's seems like don't bother them...

Move is a Proven Technology, a better Device, something that Works Great with every Game, it can appeal every kind of gamers and that's good for Sony, but they at least are Showing that they still Support the PS3 fanbase with Hardcore Games and they will Support us with more Awesome Games

That's the difference here, PS3 owners don't accept Move cos it's a Sony Product, they accept Move cos they know +20 first Party Studios will Always make Awesome Games to play and not shovelware crap...

well...
MS can incorporate normal controls while playing with kinect, but that would void everything that kinect stands for.
They checkmated themselves. But of course the casual player will save them, so they won't fail.

Consoldtobots5210d ago

everything you said is on point up to the part where you said casuals would save them. I think there will be initial buzz, they'll sell about 3-4mil units until word spreads of the limited gameplay options this technology provides.

DelbertGrady5210d ago

It's easy to call out a winner pre-hand, but it still remains to be seen who can create the killer app that casuals can't be without. That's what will determine the winner between the motion peripherals.

Why o why5210d ago

from what we've all seen; kinect isnt even doing it for the casual gamers right about now. Even the casual wii has buttons and is more accurate.

They are casuals because they don't spend hours on end playing videogames. I am lucky to play once a week and usually that is only for an hour or two. Most casuals are not going to buy another videogame console when they already own a Wii... It's not going to happen. On top of that Microsoft has a terrible reputation with the casual crowd. That has been proven time and time again. And the hardcore audience doesn't want casual games. So where does that leave the 360. Between a rock and a hard place. Of course the die hard 360 fans will buy it... Then after a couple months the novelty will wear off. The Wii had a difference. It did motion control effectively with enough good games. Nintendo already had a strong fanbase and enough casual gamers. It's like Microsoft is starting from the beginning.

sikbeta5210d ago

You know what's the problem, with didn't and don't see anything from kinect more than pre-recorded videos with actors and ads, it's like the device is not done to even test it yet...

Patrick5210d ago

Another problems is that MS has stated they have been working on it for 20 years... and thats all they have?

Boody-Bandit5210d ago (Edited 5210d ago )

Actually common sense is the reason they picked Move.
Why? Because any person that has simple logic and common sense can see Move "already" works with all games both casual and hardcore. Sony proved that during their press conference and on the E3 floor.

MS used a dog and pony show that appeared to be fake and staged demos. Faked = lame actors not actually playing the games in real time. There was only one game displayed on the E3 floor. The others were in a room for VIP's only. MS didn't even announce a price for Kinect. No matter how you spin that there are so many things wrong with not announcing a price for their product when it's hitting retail this year.

To me it doesn't sound like they are overly confident in it's functionality and they are going to try and sell it on hype, media support and a huge marketing ($$$) campaign alone. Then again that is par for the course for MS and pretty much has always been their MO.

Kinect already lost if you are going to make this a competition between the devices. Building off your own logic, here's why:

The killer app is going to have to build off each of their respective strengths - full body motion capture and precision motion control. For Kinect, the killer app will likely be a fitness and dancing game. Every other genre just shows off its limitations - lack of precision, no feedback, lack of independent movement. For Move, it is going to be FPS and RTS games. If more games like Heavy Rain are in the works, that proto-genre as well.

i dont care which one is better. i only have a ps3 so you can guess what i ll be getting sooon. =D i really enjoy motion controlls so im happy avbout the move and the hardcore games that support it.

rezzah5210d ago (Edited 5210d ago )

Sony is right when they say buttons are also needed. Seriously can any of you guys play any genre of games on Kinect with complete control with the deduction of buttons? Sony is creating games that can be played by using either Move or the DS3. Thats right 1 game, without any changes due to the Move not lacking buttons.

As I see it, for Kinect, there will only be 360 games that are played with the 360 controller and then there'll be Kinect games played only with Kinect itself.

Shadow Flare5210d ago

It's a very important issue. If sony really believed that controller free gameplay was the way to go, they would have pushed the already existing ps3 pseye. But the fact they dropped the controller free idea and designed a new controller speaks volumes. Sony have made 2 eyetoys so far. They know its pro's and know its cons. Don't forget, sony were marketting the eyetoy exactly like MS is marketing kinetc. But the limitations of it were so much so that they dropped the idea, realised you need buttons and are now reaping the benefits. This is microsofts first experience with trying to market something like this and they learning quickly its cons. Sony has the experience and realised its not the way foward

10 of the Biggest Video Game Hardware Failures Ever

I would label the Power Glove, Kinect, and that Tony Hawk skateboard more as hardware addons hardware failure would be like the Virtual Boy and one day Stadia.

Magog975d ago

Kinect was bundled with every Xbox One and inflated the price on an already underpowered and low RAM machine so for the One it wasn't an accessory as much as a white elephant.

CaptainHenry916975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

Definitely the RROD but that power glove had a lot of issues as well. The Kinect just didn't work

975d ago
CrimsonWing69975d ago

Hardware add-ons are more like RAM or a video card, basically components that enhance capabilities or performance of the computer.

If you really want to get technical the Kinect is more of a peripheral device, kind of like a keyboard or mouse to a computer.

ThatsGaming975d ago

The person in this article obviously is not up on their gaming history....

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Coleco Gemini, Commodore 128, Commodore Amiga, Atari 5200, Atari 7800 were all massive failures and in most cases cost their companies participating in future gaming generations.

Gamer79975d ago

Sega saturn (successful in Japan) and dreamcast were not failures.
Seems like you're not up on you're gaming history

septemberindecember974d ago

@Gamer79

How in the world are the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast not seen as failures? They both sold around 8M each, which is much lower than the ~30M that the Genesis had sold before it, and even the Master System before that. They were both the worst selling consoles in their respective generation (PS1, N64 outsold Saturn, PS2, GC, and Xbox outsold Dreamcast). Both of the consoles were incredibly short lived. The Saturn was discontinued in every territory but Japan after just three years. In Japan the console was discontinued after six years. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was discontinued worldwide in 2001 after launching in most territories in 1999 and in Japan in 1998. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast lead to Sega pulling out of the hardware market. Which, by the way, all of this occurred when Sega was massively dropping the price of their consoles quickly to compete. Sega was hemorrhaging money at this point.

None of this indicates a successful console. Saying the Saturn was a success because it did better in Japan is like saying the Vita is a success (they both sold around the same amount of units in Japan). Even the Wii U outsold these consoles worldwide.

Magog975d ago

The picture should be the 360 RROD. When I think of gaming hardware failures that's what springs to mind. Kinect and it's bundled price tag definitely hobbled the already underpowered Xbox One though for sure so I would give it a close second place.

porkChop975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

That's not what the author means by failures. It's about hardware that failed in terms of sales (Wii U) or just failed to deliver on its promise (Kinect).

Magog975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

Given that the 360 had a year head start, much easier hardware to develop for, was cheaper, and still ended up in third place I think it qualifies especially when you factor in the frustration and huge losses incurred by RROD.

porkChop975d ago

Selling over 80 million consoles isn't a sales flop. We get it, you don't like Xbox, but that doesn't mean the 360 is suddenly a failure.

Rhythmattic974d ago

Porky....
You know how many people I know bought a 2nd or third 360 due to RROD? Even when MS had to confront the issue with replacement systems, my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in, and waiting for a replacement.,,..,..
If that's how you consider it a win... OK.. but so is having 5 , of which 3 don't function.... Its a win win....mwhahahahaha

porkChop974d ago

"my mates couldn't wait for even the turnaround of sending it in"

You're acting like it would take months. When I sent my 360 in I got a new one literally 5 days later. As soon as MS had tracking confirmation that you sent yours, they'd send a new one to you the same day. No one is going to spend hundreds to buy a new console instead of waiting a week. I swear you guys pull some of the dumbest shit out of nowhere and think people will actually believe it.

Regardless, none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about.

Rhythmattic973d ago (Edited 973d ago )

Porky
"You're acting like it would take months"
Sometimes it could.. FFS.. 'Strya here...
Best turnaround I reckon was 2-3 weeks.....
Either way, My mates experiences still exist.. So Sorry, no point trying to earn Xbox Achievements when it doesn't feature in what was a situation you never dealt with,,,,
3 of my friends would disagree (overall, 10 extra Xboxes purchased)
Regardless.. MS sold a lot of 360's that was due to this reason.. That is sales. Fact

"none of this changes the fact that this isn't what the article is even about."
Headline says HELLO !
Oh and "Sadly, not all hardware is created equal," that's enough to pass this on without taking your article bias into consideration.....
As for the rest.... Ok.. But you've actually gone out of your way to give MS a Pass... Fap on.

Aloymetal975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

Yup, and because of that big fiasco MS had to fork out 1 billion but knowing them I think they're very proud of the 360, it's the only time a MS console reached 80mil+ sales, RROD played a big part of that and a record they will never break again.

Rhythmattic974d ago (Edited 974d ago )

So true.. Even when MS accepted they where caught out in the biggest lie of any generation, The wait for a replacement was outweighed by just buying another, and having one be returned as a backup, which, btw, generally failed on first swap.
I own honestly can't believe MS tards are just supporting , or arguing why and what MS did by just dismissing it....

lonewolf10975d ago

Lol I had the Atari Jaguar, surprised its "competition" the 3DO isn't on the list too, both as "popular" as each other.

SullysCigar975d ago

Lol same. Played the crap out of Aliens Vs Predator and Tempest 2000 .... aaand that's about it really!!

lonewolf10975d ago

Sad but true that was pretty much it.

Kurt Russell975d ago

Agreed, I never actually saw a 3DO make it to retailers in the UK. At least the Atari Jaguar was sold for around 6 months.

lonewolf10975d ago

It made it to some my brother got one, fared just as well as the Jaguar so most probably hard to find in general.

darthv72975d ago

3do had way better games. Jaguar not so much. Neo Geo sold less than both and yet isnt considered a failure. Go figure.

LWOGaming975d ago

Stadia is a weird one. It hasn’t sold at all well but in terms of how it works it’s still miles ahead of Xcloud in terms of stability and performance. Xcloud is still a way behind and that needs sorting but it will be in time. Stadia for me is one of those things that will go down as a what could have been moments. With better marketing it could have been a roaring success. I still play it and it remains the best place in my opinion to play CyberPunk 2077. Only platform I have played it on without having any issues at all. The tech is great. The concept is fine. Marketing terrible. Shame really.

Magog975d ago

The sales model was awful. They should have teamed with an existing player to allow for local and cloud access to games or a gaming subscription service.

LWOGaming975d ago

It was a strange mess from such a huge company, as I said, as a system it works really well but without gamers it’s nothing. Such a waste,

LWOGaming975d ago

The Xbox One was Microsoft’s Nintendo Wii U. Undercooked, undersold and just an unholy mess. The thing is with any of these failures is to learn from them and thankfully both Nintendo and Xbox did just that to the benefit of gamers everywhere.
