The Importance Of Socom 4

Ironstar writes: "Over the years, the Socom franchise has gained a huge following. Though it may not be as popular as the Halo franchise, it is arguably equally as important to the Playstation brand as Halo is to the Xbox."

But SONY did wrong giving this game to /6

Zipper Will bring back SOCOM to the Multiplayer Elite.

-Alpha5249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

"SOCOM 4 is as big as HALO in Multiplayer terms"

How? Socom seemed to be the flagship multiplayer title for the PS2. We've yet to see it shine on the PS3 and Killzone has become Sony's shooter flagship. I don't see how Socom is anywhere near as big as Halo both in terms of popularity or features.

The last thing I want is another Halo comparison. They aren't even the same style let alone the same genre.

I'm not hyping Socom 4 much until I see more at E3. As of right now it's another shooter to me. Heard great things about the PS2 games, but the shooter scene has evolved a lot since then. I hope to see E3 shed some light on Socom 4 but I have to reserve judgment until then. Personally I think it has good potential but have seen barely anything on it. Of course this is Zipper's staple series so I expect nothing less from it.

alphakennybody5249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

@ alpha
Soccom franchise is definitely the more popular shooter amongst the true hardcore shooter fan out there, especially in terms of multiplayer. It has a higher demand in skills/teamwork/strategy than any other shooters out there (well on consoles) even with its flaws Soccom:confrontation still demand those more than any shooter out this gen. Ever joined a room against hardened Soccom players? they'll eat you and your teammates in matter of seconds.

HolaTarola5249d ago

SOCOM is HUGE on PlayStation, probably you doesn't know this but even with all his flaws and being a major let down to all SOCOM fans, SOCOM: Confrontation is the most played game on PSN, yeah, beating Killzone 2, Modern Warfare 2, Bad Company, etc.. And is a fact, I think was the PS blog who gave the news.

Venatus-Deus5249d ago

As a massive SOCOM fan I'm pretty sure nothing beats Modern Warfare 2 in terms of numbers on the PSN.

There are probabley 50 rooms holding upto 254 players during core US hours. many of those rooms are not full. You probably have a similar amount playing quick matches.

MW2 has about half a million during busy times and quarter million all other times.

mugoldeneagle035249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

Ill agree with you on the Halo comparison. They are about as complete opposites as you can find out there.

However, SOCOM both on the PS2, and even with Confrontation does things BETTER than any other shooter has to this day. In PS3 terms (console I prefer) I owned every COD, both Resistance titles, Killzone, UT3, MAG, pretty much every shooter available on the system and I have yet to play a game where communication and strategy pretty much determine the outcome of a game. Coincidently enough, the game that comes closest is probably MAG, also developed by Zipper.

And yes, Confrontation was by far the worst game in the series thus far, and I still logged more hours on that than any of the games I mentioned. To me, any many other "hardcore" shooter enthusiasts, even a bad SOCOM is better than your average shooter.

Also, SOCOM's community will always be hands down better than Killzone's. The difference is passion, dedication and loyalty. I can't remember another game where I've ran into players I've played with in years past like I have with SOCOM (Played with many old SOCOM 2 players in Confrontation along with S3/Combined Assault)

feel need to mention socoms popularity in comparison to halos????? i know, just to cause some flaming and get hits!!

and i notice the person who posted this made sure we would all see that in the portion we could read lol. the story should be removed just for that alone.

anyway, yes i think zipper will bring back socom to it's former glory. thats it really.

morganfell5249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

People either choose to forget or simply ignore the fact that Zipper oversaw all SOCOM Confrontation production. Seth Luisi was even promoted to do just that. And it was Sony that decides when to ship a SOCOM title, not Slant Six. You won't find a more ardent PS3 supporter on this board but the facts are the facts.

As regards SOCOM it will blister the hell out of your typical run and gun player. Teamwork = survival. I didn't say victory because that alone is not enough. Of all the FPS and TPS titles I have played, SOCOM requires the most skill and is the least forgiving of stupidity, arrogance, and impatience. It is the pinnacle of tactical play.

RememberThe3575249d ago

I'm a blast 2pac and play Killzone 2 type of shooter fan. I'm enjoying MAG quite a bit and all the teamwork involved (when you get players who actually work as a team) but thats as far as I'm willing to go right now. I'll probably give the game a go though, Zipper is a quality dev and MAG has showed me that they know how to put a multiplayer game together.

if it'll be better to use dualshock 3 or the move controller.

I wish they'd just incorporate keyboard and mouse support.

:(

Simon_Brezhnev5249d ago

yeah i want mouse and keyboard support i dont think im getting into anymore FPS until the move or they incorporate mouse and keyboard.

spandexxking5249d ago

good thing socoms' a TPS then!

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5249d ago

There is the Predator Keyboard and Mouse to play ALL PS3 games.

AKS5249d ago

I would definitely say Move. It's similar in a lot of ways to a mouse. Movement of the character with the "subcontroller" might actually be more pleasant to use than the WASD keys on the keyboard, although aiming won't be quite as quick and precise as with the mouse.

On the other hand, aiming with the move should be worlds better using Move than with an analog stick. Spend some time playing through the 'Cube/PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 then put in some time with the Wii version with Wiimote. It makes a huge difference in accuracy, and the Wiimote is considerably less precise than the Move. Even when motion control was shoehorned in after the fact it made a huge difference. It's great for any game that requires precise 3D movements or aiming, such as in a shooter.

kaveti66165249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

Who's making Socom 4?

Edit: Then why is that Arakouftaian guy up top saying, "SOCOM 4 is as big as HALO in Multiplayer terms. But SONY did wrong giving this game to /6."

Anyway, I think it's weird that Zipper is moving on from MAG so quickly. I hear so many gamers complaining about a lack of new maps. Zipper should get on that.

understand that this new socom is made by the original team who made socom u.s navy seals. yea, you get the picture. im looking forward to a "rebirth" of the socom series if you will. thanks!

OrganicMachine5249d ago

that they under estimate the SOCOM franchise and its fanbase.. Those socom fans are the most hardcore of any shooter fans I have ever met online (besides WoWcrack addicts)..

SOCOM:COnfrontation was a good MP game but failed technically, not surprising as it was SLANT6's first PS3 game.

AKS5249d ago

I thought it was a decent game, and the sound was among the best I've ever heard (anyone wiht a high end home theater knows what I'm talking about), but the load times were terrible and it has to be among the least inviting games to new users. I remember people were cursing me out and saying I should be kicked because I shot a hostage the first time I played a new mode IN THE BETA! I say again, IN THE BETA! The game wasn't even finished and I'm expected to have full mastery of all the modes the first time I play it? Are you kidding me? There was no tutorial or explanation of anything, and I had never played that mode before. I was just trying the game out for the first time and obviously made a silly mistake. I had played other SOCOM games before and figured out what was going on pretty quickly after that, but I can't imagine someone completely new to the franchise would enjoy that type of interaction. Also, even the interface wasn't very user friendly. Confrontation always seemed to be designed as though there were already 3 or 4 SOCOM games on the PS3 (and thus you should be familiar with the layout already) when there obviously weren't.

SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4 and MAG servers shutting down in January 2014

Original-Gamer.com: "Sony has decided to shutdown the servers for SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4, and MAG in January 2014. SOCOM 4 and MAG were developed by Zipper Interactive while SOCOM Confrontation was developed by Slant Six Games."

Abash4086d ago

Very sad to hear, hopefully Sony continues SOCOM and MAG on PS4

BiggCMan4086d ago

MAG is not even too old yet, this doesn't make any sense. It's still fairly populated with the dedicated fans, even one of my friends recently got back into it. Hell even Confrontation has a pretty decent sized dedicated player base, I think only 4 is pretty deserted.

This really makes no sense, the games aren't old. They better be making new games in the future at least.

HammadTheBeast4086d ago

Come on now, MAG's pretty old, their new console is coming out, and there's only about 5000 individual players coming on every month, if that.

It's run its course, a fantastic game while it lasted. Hopefully, we can get a few massive battles in before the servers close, knowing the community, I expect it.

Also, a lot of MAG is on Dust 514 now, which isn't amazing, but is still alright.

kwyjibo4086d ago

It makes sense.

MAG is no longer selling, so Sony is making no money from it. In fact, it's costing them money to keep it alive.

Maybe with PS4 pay-for-online and microtransactions (read: ongoing support), you'll get a better service.

decrypt4086d ago (Edited 4086d ago )

@HammadTheBeast

"Come on now, MAG's pretty old"

No it isnt, you want really old check out:

Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1, Counter strike. Then tell me why those games are still running?

Sony closing servers to older games is just a tactic to force users on board their next console.

Its the nature of console gaming, too controlled with console gamers having little to no rights at all. Hell if Sony closes PS3 online services after PS4 launch there is nothing console gamers can do about it.

JAMurida4086d ago

MAG is barely alive now these days. Domination is only playable early AM hours (CST) when the JP players get on and that only last a few hours. Only thing going on is Sabo or Suppression.

Lucky to get an Interdiction or Acquisition going.

Utalkin2me4086d ago

Kind of ironic i recently put mag back in and got all the updates and restored all my skill points. And OMG i could not kill anybody for nothing, it was quite weird. I used to be beast at that game and i went negative for a few games before finally i quit. Felt like i was doing worse for the team then helping.

It wasn't very populated then, but hate to hear that.

BattleAxe4086d ago (Edited 4086d ago )

H-Hour is the new Socom. You can still support the development studio by way of Paypal, and you still get access to all of the Kickstarter rewards, but only until the end of the month.

http://sofstudios.com/index...

H-Hour is set to come out on PS4 and PC.

Corpser4086d ago

@all

MAG was released in 2010, just 3 years ago! You're telling me I should expect online servers to be around for just 3 years?

GasTankKiller4086d ago (Edited 4086d ago )

"It's still fairly populated with the dedicated fans."

You only see one side of this. Sony sees the stats of how many players are playing on average. No reason to waste server power for a handle full of people. Yes that handle full could be a few thousand but still.

From what I remember during MAGs development. Zipper was given a blank check and setup a server farm for MAG.

No reason to let all those servers go to waste. They will most likely use them for the PS4.

Where's the outrage? They effectively saying that you've been renting MAG all this time. Online only games shouldn't have their servers shut so soon.

HammadTheBeast4086d ago

There's about 200 people on at any time now.... and most from the free demo.

Corpser4086d ago

^^

So? You're perfectly fine an online-only game that people are still playing will be shut down

JAMurida4086d ago

#Corpser

Yes there is a community, but a very small one. It's the same case with White Knight Chronicles 1/2. Both MAG and WKC I've played heavy enough to say they had a very small community that most likely didn't warrant Sony paying the money to keep the servers going for any longer. It sucks, but it happens when it's a case like this.

If anything, I'm more surprised that MAG is being shutdown much later than WKC was. IMO, it should of been the other way around.

Sitdown4086d ago (Edited 4086d ago )

Haha, some have no clue of exactly what you just did there. Or am I reading too much into it?

No_Limit4086d ago

In other news, the 2007 X360 online only game, Shadowrun, is still playable on its online server. This show where the priority is for both companies when it comes to online gaming.

Corpser4086d ago

MAG community is far from dead, why?

And no wonder GameStop has been selling the game used for $0.99. It's an online-only game too

fr0sty4086d ago

It's a shame, I enjoy playing MAG more than just about any other shooter out there. I know many do not agree, as it does have some very obvious flaws, but it's a gem of a game beneath them.

MidnytRain4086d ago

Whoa, a dollar?? Are you serious?

Gridloc4086d ago

That's the only problem I have with digital downloads and multiplayer only games. If they shut the servers down your screwed...

Ray1864086d ago

If it has a lan option you can always use x-link.

fr0sty4086d ago (Edited 4086d ago )

I would hope such a service would work for a game like MAG, enough of the community (that is already dwindling) would need to know about that capability, and actually be bothered to want to try using it in order for it to work. I think it's just going to kill the community enough to make the game unplayable, as MAG relies on very large matches.

SIRHC134086d ago

H-Hour. We need you. Deliver the tactical third person shooter goods that we deserve!

MoonConquistador4086d ago

And in a run up to a sequel they should be giving this game away free on PS+ at least, or just make it a free to play game. Its a game I always wanted to platinum but there are never enough people on for domination games etc

Great game though

MidnytRain4086d ago

I do think Sony is expecting PlanetSide 2 to fill the massive shooter niche.

Former Sony Devs Join New Team

SuperBeast8114484d ago

I was looking forward to that game but now that zipper is touching it? I dont know they been making crap for almost 10 years now Socom 1 and 2 are the only thing good they have done

JoeReno4484d ago (Edited 4484d ago )

i really disagree, Unit13 is still my most enjoyed Vita game yet. it was quite good, and I for one am glad to hear this news.

Sithlord-Gamble4484d ago

My thoughts exactly.

Unit 13 is awesome, and IMO MAG is underrated.

fei-hung4484d ago

I bought Unit13 on release but only started playing it yesterday. I cannot believe how underrated and under appreciated this game is.

This game is not only better than the likes of COD in terms of military shooter, but the stealth gameplay is beautiful! It's like MGS but with a more military feel.

SuperBeast8114484d ago

I dont have a Vita yet so I havnt tried it maybe I spoke too soon I was just really burnt by Socom 4 but Ill try Unit 13 when I have the cash.

ExposingLames4484d ago

i've learned this site is nothing but kiss asses and fanboys so I usually don't even comment anymore. I read the news and leave. Although your comment will be "disagreed" into oblivion it is 100% fact. Its also the reason ZIPPER GOT CLOSED DOWN. I'm sure the lower level workers aren't really to blame, but there is no denying their games and how bad they were and what they did to SOCOM. What a joke. Glad Zipper is gone.

dead_eye4484d ago

opinion can never be 100% fact.

ExposingLames4484d ago

@ dead eye. its not opinion it is fact. go search "sony closes Zipper interactive" it didnt happen because they were making great games.

xursz4484d ago

"Big Huge Games" got shut down as well (I hope they get picked up by a worthy publisher), yet KoA was greatly received. I personally think MAG is definitely underrated too.
