SNK as it was back in the 80's was a hardware manufacturer; content to produce a line of distinctive arcade titles that also made the transition into the home via their expensive console system. Back then owning a Neo Geo system was the ultimate aim for most gamers. Furnishing the system with ridiculously rare and expensive cartridges imported at great cost was akin to keeping an ancient car on the road legally."
GameRevolution writes: "Samurai Shodown Sen is a dojo of mediocrity that would have been better as an easy downloadable 2D revival. Fighting game aficionados will find this title lacking precise controls and mechanics, while newcomers who are bored with Street Fighter IV and need more to do with their expensive Tournament Edition Fight Stick should really look into other titles that are much, much better".

This 3D chapter was originally released in arcades in Japan as Samurai Spirits: Flash and marks the fourth time the series has been seen in 3D.
