Killzone 3: It's All in The Eyes

SixthAxis: "Personally I think Killzone 2 is one of the (if not the) best games ever. It has some of the most memorable set pieces and the feel of the game nails it for me. I love the clunky controls and the need for precision aiming by thinking about your positioning rather than "twitch shooting". The cut scenes also stand out amongst the usual FPS fare, with the introduction being such a great build up to the game, from Visari's speech to the ships using their thrusters to swing about and position for a missile launch on Helghan vessels. There is something very suspicious and perhaps suggestive about Visari's speech though. Watching the opening cut scene in high definition allows you to see that Visari has green eyes. Not really suspicious as of yet but then at the end of the game when you kill Visari, he gets right into Rico's face and begins with "you have not won…".

Well, looking closely at his eyes just then reveals that they are indeed brown! That raises many questions."

Aww man. I did not even look at his eyes. Now I have to go back and see for myself. Green eyes or not though I sure hope KZ3 is in the works.

plum305513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

I thk KZ2 has the best gunplay ever seen in any FPS and the online multiplayer is unbeatable as far as FPS's are concerned IMO.

Chubear5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

AWWW MAN! This guy is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO right! lol. That would be very interesting and very plausible. They would have gotten the Scolar out of there when the ISA came knocking right at the front door. They're the military for goodness sakes - DASTARDLY!

One thing I'm curious about is who'll be the next Radec. I mean Radec was a bad son of a B@&$*! and to phantom his replacement being even more badass?!... kinda makes me a bit scared to tell the truth XD

Certainly the best FPS I've ever experienced in my life hands down. Just cant' wait for KZ3. Ohhhh the madness!

Darkeyes5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

I must say that the guns in KZ2 are the most detailed guns I have ever seen.. Everything from loading to the gun fire feels satisfying (boy pooping heads with a shotgun online never has been better)... Heck everything in the game is detailed.

People are way to whiny about the controls. It's tougher so it sucks right?! Oh Ok so it lacks co-op and hence sucks!!! Critics analyzed every fu*king aspect of this game to the core to find out flaws. In they end they found less, so it gets termed as generic and games like COD and Halo get a freepass. Everybody overlooks the fact that the game had phenomenal graphics unrivaled till date on a console (Uncharted 2 isn't out), it supported 32 players online at those phenomenal graphics with no glitches and It doesn't lag on my crappy net!!!!

I personally can't wait for KZ3.. Hope Sev joins the Helghans.... Boy they rock.

raztad5513d ago

@plum30

You're totally right. KZ2 is just unbeatable regarding combat/gunplay. Other shooters feel just cheap, ridiculous easy, plain boring compared with KZ2, especially if you play it on Hard.

@Chubear

KZ universe allows for the development of a very interesting story. Visari death seems way too straightforward, I doubt such a clever man can be defeated so easily.

NMC20075513d ago

So I assume you two have played all the FPSs that are on the market, that's quite an incredible feat gentlemen. *gives you a round of applause*

Ravage275513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

I never understood people who whine about the controls. Sure everyone have their preferences, but KZ2 gunplay feels just right and has a very satisfying feel to it(recoil, sound, animation, etc) ,it is perfect in my eyes. As for the multiplayer,it is easily the best i've played to date. The sheer intensity and sense of rush i get when playing KZ2 MP is something i just can't find in other shooters.

on-topic: Wow it would be more epic if they had really swapped him before Sev and Rico arrived

ukilnme5513d ago

That would be interesting if he was swapped out. Lol, if so maybe the real Visari could come back and take Rico.

gamesR4fun5513d ago

still got tons of trophies to get in sp tho i got most of the online ones XD

marinelife95513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

Maybe that's why Guerilla changed it after that damned patch so that you have to listen to part of Visari's opening monologue everytime now.

I think I know it by heart now. (Still working towards 3 star) Fun game!

raztad5513d ago

@NMC

You dont need to play ALL the FPSes just the best, from classic to modern. And yes I have played most of them. Just for your record, I went so far as playing an Unreal Tournament 2004 called Red Orchestra (realistic second WW simulator). My argument still stand, IMO KZ2 gunplay > other FPS out there. Not talking about puzzles or other stuff, where for example HL2 excels.

ThanatosDMC5513d ago

Rico is an A-hole. What was wrong with that guy?

HDgamer5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

Rico is a hot headed annoying asshole. Just like in the first game.

cayal5512d ago

Saddam had body doubles..

nveenio5512d ago

It's definitely a continuity issue. They wouldn't do something like that and have NO other hints. Besides, we already know there's a sequel going on, and it would be much more interesting to have to fight against two or three different forces trying to gain control, wouldn't it? In fact, it would be much like the Iraq situation.

Roper3165513d ago

the only thing that set KZ2 apart from the others was the graphics, otherwise it was just another generic military FPS.

Roper3165513d ago

I didn't find Bioshock to be generic

WMW5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

i'm sure what Tinted Eyes meant was that all military shooters are generic they have the same types of characters the silent guy, the new guy, the tough guy, and the funny guy also all wars are the same one side wants to beat the other and on top of these things most are sci fi with aliens vs humans so yeah all military fps games are pretty much the same

HDgamer5513d ago

Yeah it was generic, I mean what other platform offered a FPS game with First person cover system, a rotating multiplayer game offering a variety of missions without resetting the maps, environment interaction meaning you can get killed by a nuclear warhead or the train and a intense campaign.

Raf1k15513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

The only thing to set it apart was the graphics?

Did you not notice how different the gameplay was and the control scheme?

edit: @WMW. If that's true then maybe he should try and express himself in a better way instead of being so blunt about it. After all, calling something generic can only mean one thing.

raztad5513d ago

Roper doesnt know what he/she is talking about. I want to know how many FPSes has Roper played before that look and feel as KZ2 does. Beyond gameplay (where KZ2 excels and its quite apart from games like Halo and other gun and run shooters) KZ2 got an atmosphere you cant find anywhere else. Let put it this way, a KZ2 screenshot can be recognized easily out of a bunch of others because not other game looks like KZ2 does.

StanLee5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

Dude, I agree with you. I have one single trophy for completing the first mission. The game was terribly generic.

JonnyBigBoss5513d ago

You obviously didn't play it. Killzone 2 did some new things, and did a LOT of things well. It's the best FPS so far of 2009.

skwidd5513d ago

... GT5 is also generic in its genre? :S

And you're saying being generic cant be good?

The game was awesome! And was tops in most aspects in an FPS game.

Now you're saying being generic isnt good/fun... -_-

aldesko5513d ago

"Dude, I agree with you. I have one single trophy for completing the first mission. The game was terribly generic."

You mean the first mission was generic?

What FPSs do you play btw? I can't think of any console FPSs that feels like KZ2. To me, Resistance, CoD, and Halo are the generic ones... not necessarily in terms of story, but they're all just run-n-gun twitch shooters. Don't get me wrong, they're fun... but once you're good at one, you're good at all of them.

I can understand if you didn't like the controls, but it seems like saying a high profile, highly-reviewed game is 'generic' is just a way for people to hate on a game when they have no other reasons to.

StanLee5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

The game didn't excite me. The set pieces have all be done too many times before and I found the action predictable and not at all engaging. That said, I have 4 achievements for Halo 3 and find that game even less engaging that Killzone 2. Now the Killzone and Halo fanboys can equally disagree with me.

BattleAxe5513d ago

Theres way more running and gunning in KZ2 then CoD. KZ2 has grenades going off all the time, people running to the same places where its absolute chaos. You can run and gun in CoD, but you will get killed alot. When I play both KZ2 and CoD, I'm a bit of a camper and I tend to play more of a tacticle style.

Generic shooters include HALO 1,2 and 3, Unreal Tournament 3, Resistance 1 + 2, Doom and Quake games. These are all arena style run and run and run and gun games and they suck IMO.

TheBand1t5513d ago

I disagree about Halo 1, Resistance 1, and Doom.

ChozenWoan5513d ago

I was out of town and over to my friends house last week with my ps3 and he has 360. Him and his son where playing Halo3 and while watching it I was inspired to get my FPS on. I poped in KZ2 and after the second match I looked up to find everyone was watching me play KZ2. On the ride back Sunday he began hinting that he might be interested in getting a PS3, coincidence maybe?

I've seen Both Halo and KZ2 side by side and all I can say is Halo is slow as snails when it comes to action, even CoD4 is more fast paced. Truthfully, KZ2 beats Halo3 in both graphics, action, and tactics. hating on the controls wont change how great the game is, nor stop the millions of new PS3 owners from enjoying this classic title.

Oh, and just to give you a heads up. With KZ3 just over the horizon, get ready for the KZ franchise to live up to it's street name....
HALO KILLER.

darx5513d ago

Owned them both, HALO for me.

sam22365513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

I agree completely with Roper316 and this is for everyone who replied to him:

Oh. My. God.

This is a PERFECT example fanboyism! You all say the game is good, but don't give a reason as to why it's good. Tell me, what does KZ2 have that BioShock or Operation Flashpoint doesn't?

This has nothing got to do with graphics or multiplayer, BTW, because everyone knows that the game has amazing graphics and all that jazz. I'm talking about the gameplay. What does KZ2 bring to the table in terms of gameplay? inb4 "OMFG, [useless]cover mechanic and YOU CAN LOOK DOWN AND SEE HIS LEGZ!1!!1!!".

IMHO, KZ2 is the Crysis of consoles. It look's pretty, but the gameplay is crap.

HDgamer5513d ago

You contradicted yourself and you're a hypocrite. You can't even explain why the game is generic or even crap. The gameplay is far from above generic/crap. I never seen AI that actually think as if they were real players in the game. Giving out commands to where to head to and shoot. Then the final boss General Radec, how difficult was it to even beat him on veteran let alone elite.

Halo3 MLG Pro5513d ago

Dude Halo 2 had environment interaction. First to use a train in a multiplayer map. :)

HDgamer5513d ago

Not even remotely close to what I'm talking about. Killzone 2 has a train in one of the newer map packs that is uncontrollable by the players, basically it's just the level. In some parts of it you will get killed by the environment itself. Or in the latest map packs where you must run for cover to stay clear of the nuke that goes off in the level.

mal_tez925513d ago

So its generic to have the most fun shooting gameplay ever? The way the weapons look, sound, and most importantly FEEL when you shoot them is miles ahead of any other game.

Was it's generic cover system? How about dynamic mission multiplayer? How about the effects and explosions? Were they plain to you?

yorkie5512d ago

Lets turn that around then and say that your statement is a pefect example of fanboyism. You say 'what does KZ2 have that Bioshock and Operation Flashpoint dont', well what do Bioshock and Operation flashpoint have that KZ2 doesn't ??. As you dont provide reasons for either case then by your own wierd logic you are indeed a 'fanboy'.

sam22365512d ago (Edited 5512d ago )

@HDgamer: Hypocrite? WTF are you talking about? Unlike you (And everyone else who says KZ2 is amazing) I can actually see the flaws in the game, I'm not a fanboy putting KZ2 on a pedestal because it's an exclusive with impressive graphics.

Oh and let me explain why the game is generic and crap: You do the same thing over and over again (Protect convoy/Rico/whatever, kill some Helghast, repeat for rest of game). You have nearly the same grey/black/brown environments in every level. The game has nothing that hasn't been done before. Therefore, it's generic. The only thing I can say is new is the montion controls...and even then they were annoying. And worst of all, then ending was ridiculous.

Also, F.E.A.R./F.E.A.R. 2's AI reacted to how the player played the game. If you hid from the soldiers, you'd hear them say things like "Searching!" and "Find him!" and they would be actually looking for you. If you killed half a squad, you'd hear "We need reinforcements!" and the soldiers would try to run away from you or hide until more come. Also, they'd flank you.

So yeah, KZ2 is generic.

@yorkie: LMAO!! BioShock has choices that actually affect the gameplay. What does KZ2 have? Operation Flashpoint has sandbox gameplay, you can complete a mission any way you want and it has a load of weapons and vehicles. What does KZ2 have?

Also, I'm a fanboy because I like BioShock and Operation Flashpoint and not KZ2? Piss off, please.

yorkie5512d ago

No I wont.

Firstly:- Your a fan boy by application of your own criteria, you slated someone for making a statement yet not providing reasons then went to make a statement of your own yet not provide any reasons. That is why HDgamer rightly labelled you a hypocrite.

Secondly:- You can see flaws in the game, well that is something that can be said of each and every game every released, they all have flaws of some kind or another.

Thirdly:- Every game can be said to be 'generic and crap': you do the same thing over and over again, this is true of Bioshock and Operation Flashpoint and what exactly was done in either of those games that has not been done before ?

Forthly:- You might not like Killzone 2 thats fair enough, but why on earth are you getting all defensive and abusive because other people like the game far more than you do, that is exactly what a fanboy does and why resort to abuse is it because you know deep down your actually wrong.

Fifthly:- If you want to make a point try to do so in a sensible constructive manner, or is that beyond your mental capabilities.

i think its a mistake, the opening cinematic with the speach was made by a british CGI company using the killzone 2 engine, so it is possible that over the years the game was developed that many different versions of the character where made and continuity was lost.

supahbad5513d ago

i thought it was a mistake too, i never pay that much attention to games

table5513d ago (Edited 5513d ago )

possibly. On close inspection there are alot of features on Visari's face other than the eyes that are very different. I like the idea that this was not the real Visari because it was a pretty crap way to kill off the main villain when he hasn't done anything memorable or particularly evil(though that might be part of the underlying story of good v bad and who is really the good guys...).

Looking forward to KZ3 on the ps3. I still feel KZ2 is one of the best multiplayer games out there. One of the best games ever though? not quite, but a great game in its own right.

randomwiz5513d ago

I loved the multiplayer, but I bought it 2 months after release, so when I first played it, everyone was just way too good. I kept getting killed, then I got a lot better after some practice.

lilgringo5512d ago

WHAT!?
You played the game and got better. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Seriously, you have to teach me. I'll do whatever you want, even pay you...Wait a minute... Teach? Perhaps I can teach myself, by... Practicing?
YES! THAT'S IT! I will practice until i get better. Bet you didn't think of that, huh? In your face!

I love this game. Imo its the best online fps this gen and I can say that with over 15 days online in cod 4. I love killzone 2 and play it every single day!

Saaking5513d ago

That would explain why he was killed so easily. I mean, there was very little protection and the only really protecting him was Radec. Sure he's strong, but you would expect Visari to be well protected considering he's technically the emperor.

cranium5513d ago

In the hallway leading to Visari's room, you see like 20 dead guys. Those guys were Visari's guards. They killed themselves.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1255d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1255d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1255d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1255d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1255d ago
Vegamyster1255d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1254d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1254d ago (Edited 1254d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

MadLad1254d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1255d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip

Resistance, Dead Space franchise, Splatterhouse, Lollipop Chainsaw, Brutal Legends, Alice Madness Returns, Enslaved Journey to the West, Mass Effect franchise. Also wouldn't mind seeing a new Wild Arms game remake or HD remaster, the Xenosaga trilogy, a new Parasite Eve, a new Dino Crisis just too many games to list that are forgotten and left in the dark now adays.

Sciurus_vulgaris1432d ago

The PS3 is difficult to emulate. PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 would require translation from PowerPC to x86. Additionally the PS5 likely would have to mimic the PS3’s GPU and CPU.

This is what pops up on my web browser. So I can't even read the site. So, forget that. They don't need my data.

But let's get something straight. OG Xbox had around 1,001 games. How many are BC on Series X? **39** THIRTY NINE. Come on! That's wack BC. You can't tell me that's a complete list. Talking about commitment. Game preservation. Ridiculous. Covers nothing.

How many games released on Xbox 360? Around 2085. How many are BC?
568. That's it. Around 1,517 are **MISSING** Stop playing. Tired of that nonsense.

Anyway, the only games I really want from PS3 that would be awesome are Motorstorm and MGS4. I'll take BC. I'll take a remaster. I'll take a remake. If not those, then Killzone 2. And in VR, maybe Sports Champions, House of the Dead Overkill and the Time Crisis games.

That's all I need. But we've gone over BC again and again in every possible way. It wasn't that important because Sony sold 115 million consoles without it. That's proof enough with no outcry. And PS5 has damn near all 4,000+ PS4 games BC. It's not PS1,PS2 and PS3. But that's plenty. I'll take more but you get what you get.
