RPGSite The Last Remnant PC Review

The Last Remnant is a reasonably competent RPG, combining elements from both the standard turn-based and strategy sub-genres and making a new, interesting beast from them. It's deep if you have the time to invest in it and provides a challenge throughout. With the graphical issues from the Xbox 360 version largely absent this version is far superior despite the cringe worthy voice acting and some leftover technical issues.

The biggest crime of TLR sadly lies in the gameplay, which suffers terribly due to its experimental, genre-combining nature. In some places it feels like a revolution, while in others it feels like a mess of unfinished ideas.

The Last Remnant is a fun game in spite of its flaws, and is worth playing just to see some of the interesting ideas which may well inspire ideas for future RPGs. But when it comes down to it, it's only just above average.

Looks like the PC version did little to help the situation

Tony P5893d ago

Very nicely reviewed. In-depth.

On a side note, the character models in TLR show that your character models don't have to look like they've had a Vaseline bath when rendered in UE3. Please take note of this, devs.

SpoonyRedMage5893d ago

I agree, good review. It the rubbish controls that kept it down score-wise which say good things for the PS3 version as it will have a proper controller and the improved technical stuff hopefully.

Good review tohugh, I agreed with most of it, the voices and acting aren't too bad though, not any worse than most Capcom games.

I think the combat is hit or miss, I personally really like it(as well as the whole game, it's in depth and unique) but to each their own I guess.

I agree about the Character Models, I think they actually look superior to Gears. Although Rush's running animation is dreadful.

hay5893d ago

True. ~5 is average for them. See closing comment:

"But when it comes down to it, it's only just above average."

SixTwoTwo5893d ago

Still waiting on the PS3 version here. You hear me Square Enix.

AP5893d ago

Sadly considering the trouble they had getting an Unreal Engine game to work on Xbox and past documented trouble with the PS3 and UE, I dread to think how bad this'd be on PS3.

LeonSKennedy4Life5893d ago

The UE was built with RAM in mind...

SixTwoTwo5893d ago

We all know that, for the most part, the UE3 and PS3 don't mix. But that didn't stop Take 2 from delivering an excellent PS3 port of Bioshock last year. And from what I hear Mirror's Edge also turned out well. I'm not expecting much from Square Enix. Just something playable. And its my hope that all of this extra time they're spending on the PS3 version gives us something playable.

khellendros15893d ago

What I don't understand is why aren't they getting help from Sony? Maybe they are and Sony is not helping but that wouldn't make sense. There are several games that work beautifully on the PS3 using the UE3 and all of them were released last year or earlier(UT3). It doesn't make sense for them to still be struggling this much. I don't think that the team wants to work on the PS3 but are being forced.

AP5893d ago

It's not really about help from Sony, it's not Sony's engine. It's just not an ideal engine for the PS3 and takes a lot of work to get right, and a lot of studios would rather not devote that time and money to get it perfect and just push it out the door. Like I said, if they can't get Unreal Engine right on Xbox, they're really screwed.

TheIneffableBob5893d ago (Edited 5893d ago )

BioShock is technically UE2.5. It runs on a highly modified UE2, built upon the engine they used for SWAT 4 and Tribes: Vengeance. People only say BioShock uses UE3 because that's what Ken Levine said, but he's the creative director. All the programmers say it's UE2.5. One could argue that UE3 is technically just a highly modified UE2 and they'd be right, but BioShock does not use UE3 in the literal sense.

...where the hell is the PS3 version?
Didn't SquareEnix say that it was delayed due to problems with the engine?

I don't know...they should've said it was a timed exclusive.

TheColbertinator5893d ago

You actually believed something Square Enix said?

Hahahaha

solidjun55893d ago

Yea, I did Steven. I should've known better than that. Geez, when they said they were having problems, I believed them. I knew something was wrong when they didn't say 1 word about the PS3 port (let's be honest, it's going to be port) after they said they were having problems with it.

TheColbertinator5893d ago

I doubt its even coming.Still I tried it and hated it so its not my loss

AP5893d ago

Still coming, Square say.

Aclay5893d ago

"By the way....
...where the hell is the PS3 version?
Didn't SquareEnix say that it was delayed due to problems with the engine?"

If Square ever does release the PS3 version, personally I think they should just release it in Japan because it's not gonna sell in Europe or in the U.S., because by now plenty of PS3 owners already know that The Last Remnant is mediocre (in terms of reviews).

Square should stop wasting money on these medicore JRPG's and finish FFXIII and Versus XIII for goodness sake.

SpoonyRedMage5893d ago

I'm actually hoping that if the PS3 version is as good technically as the PC version(but with the controls of the 360) it will do quite well, review wise and sales wise because I love The Last Remnant. If yous haven't tried it I think you should give it a go but neither of the two current versions do it justice in my opinion and UE3 was the worst choice ever. I think I would have preferred if they made their own engine, it still looked good though but it was buggy.

TLR isn't affecting FFXIII or Versus btw, separate teams. FFXIII and Versus also have much bigger budgets than The Last Remnant(which is a really low budget game, probably why they didn't make their own engine).

Apparently the English voice overs were done before the Japanese ones, gawd I hate those Japanese dubs./joke

While I agree that the combat in Star Ocean 5's combat is pretty fun, saying that its story is more enjoyable than its predecessors is highly debatable. Also, it's not just the technical issues the game suffers from.

Gaming4Life19811928d ago

Star Ocean 5 was garbage and I was a huge star ocean fan.

Docmortem1928d ago

Completely disagree the games I played from the list all deserve their scores (Star Ocean, Nier, Tales of Zesteria, Type-0). While there are certainly people that love these games, they have flaws in many categories, that justify those scores.
Star Ocean especially bored the hell out of me. Lame story and face roll battle system (I finished the game anyway). These games are really niche and when rated by a broader public, fall short. In my opinion even in their own genre.

solideagle1928d ago

I personally have not played any game below 80 and thought wow this should have been 80-90 game. The only game I thought should have been 90 was Shadow Hearts II: Covenant. I am pretty sure there will be some games but average score usually is pretty good indication.

do you recommend any JRPG which you think were good/amazing but it didn't score well? I just purchased Tokyo xanadu but it seems way too slow like trails game but trail at least has good story. I will give it a shot

rainslacker1928d ago

I think there were quite a few JRPG games that got hit with lower meta scores last gen when all these reviewers were on their anti-anime tropes kick. Not that they should get up there into the high 80s or 90s, but they weren't 60-70 games either.

That's mostly died off this gen, thankfully

WickedLester1928d ago

Ni No Kuni 2 is way better than it's metascore.

solideagle1928d ago

I think Ni No Kuni 2 combat is pretty generic but if you add all DLCs then its combat is pretty awesome. I purchased the complete edition so I can say DLC changes the combat completely

FinalAeonX1928d ago

Ni no Kuni 1 is way better than its metascore

Father__Merrin1928d ago

meta scores are rubbish best ignore them. many gems out there

solideagle1928d ago (Edited 1928d ago )

can you please name few?

Kocurstvo1927d ago (Edited 1927d ago )

Useless to argument troll, but e.g. Eat Lead is hilarious and extremely funny, yet mediocre on metastupids.... Lords of the Fallen, Strange brigade... I could name hundreds

It's a good game, but the story is only okay. The gameplay is where the game really shines, but the game itself does an atrocious job of explaining it's own systems. Basically, you need to read a "what I wish I knew before I started" somewhere online, and then the game becomes great.
