Bayonetta 3 Review - IGN

Bayonetta 3 changes up the tried and true formula to great effect, and while its story is a bit of a letdown and the performance suffers in select spots, it more than earns its place among the best action games available on the Switch.

"its story is a bit of a letdown and the performance suffers in select spots..." wasn't these also mentioned in their MW2 review and they slapped it with 6/10? WTF IGN?

Profchaos948d ago

Simple answer someone paid their bill

SeTTriP948d ago

Have you played bayonetta? Bayonetta 2 is arguably one of the greatest action games ever made.her character is charming and flushed out, the side characters are laugh out loud funny, and the set pieces would give God of War 3 a Run for its money.

One of the main reason I still own a switch and I'm well documented as a Playstation fan.the franchise is great just needs a bigger audience.

Outdated graphics, choppy framerate and a mediocre story.... 6/10!... Oh wait, this is a switch exclusive?! I mean, 9/10! We'll let all the flaws slide because it's only on Nintendo and the hardware is ancient, so we can't expect too much from it! 🤔 😳 🙄

Lexreborn2948d ago

Same thing for Gotham knights, these reviewers are a joke and bias shows heavily.

Old McGroin948d ago

It could possibly be that the base gameplay itself is of a much higher quality than MW2? There's more to videogames than story.

badz149948d ago

yeah, tell that to IGN when they review other games that don't have "NINTENDO" plastered over them!

CrimsonWing69948d ago

And Gotham Knights got a 5/10…

ABizzel1948d ago

MW 6/10, same reasons
Gotham Knights 5/10 same reasons (deserved)

This is what happens when bias starts to crop in and you have too many reviewers without any guidelines. If you're going to hold others accountable fro story and performance, then everyone needs to be held accountable.

A bad story is subjective, and IMO should only be knocked if it's bad in the sense of bad pacing, contradictions, plot holes, or simply mediocre at best and get a -1.

But performance should be a knock of -1 for 60fps targets that noticeably miss (ex: constant 50fps or upper 40fps), and -2 for 30fps targets that miss (constant 20fps).

Neonridr948d ago

glad you get to gatekeep the scores and determine how things should be marked. If performance issues happen all the time, I get you. But taken from the review :

"But while it’s always frustrating when the frame rate dips, Bayonetta 3 does hold 60fps during most combat encounters, and the major performance issues only really rear their heads when the action gets a little too overambitious."

so from the sounds of it, it's mostly 60fps, so say take .5 off then to appease you. Then -1 for your story and you come out with an 8.5. Hardly something to freak out about when they gave it a 9.

Imalwaysright948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

No it doesn't because it's the overall experience a game provides that matters the most. A game with some technical flaws can offer a better or worse experience than another game that has the same exact technical flaws and every single review in existance is biased. How could it not when reviews only exist when someone had a personal experience with any given game? Reviews are opinions and I for one don't understand why some people pretend that there is some sort of scientific method to create them. There isn't and if some people want to remove any sort of bias from reviews this is what they'll get https://www.youtube.com/wat...

ABizzel1948d ago

@Neonridr

The reality is there should be more consistency in reviews as there is with any other product, and not whatever mood the reviewer/fan is in. As I said the story is "subjective", but issues like pacing, plot holes, and bad writing are things that are tangible.

However, performance isn't subjective. Which is why I said constant drops to 50 or less in a supposed 60fps mode, that's a performance issue. Where did I say I was gatekeeping? I simply provided an example and you can keep it moving if you have nothing constructive to add.

Neonridr948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

@ABizzel1 - You got all upset because you didn't agree with the score, then proceeded to provide your own personal scoring merits on how you think a game should be reviewed. That's gatekeeping.

Don't agree with the reviewer? Fine, but to say they are wrong is silly. The game is getting good scores across the board. This isn't exactly a one off.

ABizzel1948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

It took me 13 hours to respond back to you, so what in your mind makes you think I got upset or that I care about what you're saying. I'm responding just to clarify. Once again, I simply made a comment that other games have been docked for the same, and in general, reviews should be more consistent. You are spinning this random narrative in your own head, because not once did I say I disagreed with the review or score, I pointed out that CoD and Gotham Knights were both knocked for "mediocre story" and "performance", and that IGN as a company should be more consistent across the board if that's the route they're going to start taking.

YOU went with this narrative.

Tbh I don't know about you but for me story in Bayonetta is as important as story in Mario, it's a gameplay driven game first and foremost, I wouldn't give a crap if the game had a 10 minute cutscene as the entire story, it really depends on how much of the game is cutscenes and how important is the story to the events

Tacoboto948d ago

"WTF"?

They answer that in literally the next phrase of the same sentence:

"it more than earns its place among the best action games available on the Switch"

Nintentional948d ago

Stop reading just the headline/short summary and actually read the article. Maybe you would learn why they gave Bayo 3 a 9 and MW2 a 6?

badz149948d ago

"Likewise, as you’d expect from Call of Duty, the shooting is also pulled straight from the top shelf. Weapon handling is precise and punchy, and the visual, physical, and particularly audio feedback is in a league most FPS games can only dream of. Praise should certainly be laid on the sniper and assault rifles in particular, which feel the best they ever have. There’s a seemingly never-ending collection of weapons to pick up, each of which feels distinct in feedback and form, although rarely does the mission design favor one type over another to the point that different gun categories can feel interchangeable."

from MW2 review. so why don't YOU go and read/watch the reviews.

Story was a bit of a letdown but they score it 9/10?

I can see looking past the performance hiccups as that can be patched later but the story is an intricate part of the game.

stupidusername948d ago

Is it? I never found the story of Bayonetta 1 or 2 to be important, but the overall experience of those games still warrants a 8/10 and 10/10 for me.

GamingSinceForever948d ago

What are you asking me for? That is what the reviewer said.

repsahj948d ago

Great review! Bayonetta 1 and 2 on switch are so good, maybe I'll buy it after I finish GoW ragnarok on ps5.

rpvenom948d ago

I was a huge Bayonetta fan when it released on PS3. I'm seriously so sad that its a switch exclusive since.. I don't have many games I want to play on switch personally but Bayonetta is seriously making me consider.. wonder if there'll be a future release on pc or ps5.. sigh

VersusDMC948d ago

Bayonetta 3 was on the NVIDIA leak list for PC...so maybe.

Bnet343948d ago

Good luck with that boycott fellas

roadkillers948d ago

Listening to AngryJoe, sounds like she misrepresented her pay. She was offered $15,000 at one point. Personally, I’d do that much for voice acting… but surprised she didn’t have more leverage.

HyperMoused948d ago

$15k to be the voice and personality of a half a billion dollar franchise is chicken feed really, (a quick google search of some famous voices, Bender and Spongebob are worth millions), of course it isnt seasons of work but still doesnt seem like much. Anyway she lost her fight when she lied.

roadkillers948d ago

Where did half a billion come from?

Bayonetta 3's Director Was Worried Hideki Kamiya Would Interfere

PlatinumGames has released the first of a four-part documentary examining the development of Bayonetta 3. It's jam-packed with fascinating anecdotes from the team, including a rather surprising revelation from the game's director, Yusuke Miyata.

Miyata confirmed that Hideki Kamiya, creator of the Bayonetta franchise, approached him directly to offer up the role of the sequel's director. However, instead of jumping at the opportunity, Miyata was initially hesitant and was worried that Kamiya himself would interfere in the project too much.
