Shadow of the Tomb Raider's PS5 and Xbox Series patch tested

Digital Foundry : A surprise update recently arrived for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, giving the best of both worlds for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles: a high resolution that looks great on 4K displays, in addition to a 60fps target. And if the consistency of the frame-rate isn't good enough for you, the legacy 1080p performance mode remains. In our opinion, the revised quality mode is the one to play, and the differences in how PS5 and Xbox Series X deliver it is intriguing.

Awe man... i figured series s would be bumped up to 1080. Well damn.

TheDoomedGuy1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

Yeah well the Xbox one x runs the game at a higher resolution than the series s.

I've said this before. Anything series s can run so can the one x. Microsoft are legit assholes for not allowing the one x to have next gen games because it could essentially play them all.

They praised and pushed the one x as an amazing console and what everyone asked for and then pretty much throw it out the window without actually needing to. It's an insult to those that invested in this "monster"

This is why I won't be investing in an Xbox machine unless i really have to...i already have a laptop with the capabilities of the series s so i won't actually need their console this generation.

strifeblade1342d ago

Every single Xbox one game can be played on the one x. What's the problem?? You even own an Xbox? Every single new Xbox game is Xbox one x enhanced. What are you on about?

Rdeal1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

Are you joking the difference in cpu is massive, the Series S will out perform the One X by a mile

TheDoomedGuy1342d ago

@strife

I used to own the Xbox one but it was quite a pointless console with little to no exclusive games. Kept hoping for them but they never arrived.

My point is Xbox one x can run at the same level as Xbox series s and therefore next gen exclusives should also run on Xbox one x.

@rdeal
Yes the cpu is improved which is nice but games are mostly vram based and all that Xbox one x needs to do is run at lower resolutions and setting s and it could match the series s which can only seem to run this game at 900p

“the Microsoft machine is pushing many more pixels than its Sony counterpart, giving a marginal lead overall in image quality.”

“Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 gets significantly closer to the target 60 frames per second”

GamerRN1343d ago

I wish Xbox gave us an option to match PS5 resolution. Surely the drop would yield a solid 60 much more consistently...

NeoGamer2321342d ago

This is a developer choice, not an XB choice. I have no clue why developers are choosing more pixels over framerate for cross platform games.

GamerRN1340d ago

It's not as much a developer choice as you might think. There are conditions Microsoft sets fourth, and one is that resolution is higher by 15 percent on their system.

I think it's a mistake

LOGICWINS1343d ago

So losing 2-3 frames every now and then vs. consistently inferior image quality throughout the entirety of the game.

I know which version I'm playing

CaptainHenry9161343d ago (Edited 1343d ago )

Unfortunately a casual gamer won't tell the difference. The next gen consoles are too much a like when it comes to graphics, resolution, and FPS and it's not like the Xbox One X Vs the PS4 Pro. The only difference is really the load times in games and 3 more frames every now and then and that's a marginal difference and subjective. I will say playing the PS5 version of Ghost of Tuishima has no load times while using my M2 SSD drive. I'm hoping Halo Infinite won't have load time in the game and when you fast travel or after cut scenes.

LOGICWINS1343d ago

@CaptainHenry916 Yup, quick load times make a huge difference. For example, I would have enjoyed Horizon a lot more if I didn't have to endure those long ass loading screens. That won't be an issue with the sequel.

CaptainHenry9161343d ago

"That won't be an issue with the sequel."

Are you sure? It is a cross gen game that might be held back because of the PS4🤔

SeTTriP1342d ago

https://youtu.be/o-kOiyN4ng... the game is better on ps5 in every way.

And to make it worst its running in back compat mode.

gamer78041342d ago

Same here if I really cared about all the FPS I’d do performance mode

Jin_Sakai1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

“So losing 2-3 frames every now and then vs. consistently inferior image quality throughout the entirety of the game.”

PS5 would have the same image quality if they upped the resolution and sacrificed the framerate like the Series X version is doing.

Regardless, it’s in the neighborhood of 8 to 10 frame diffference in demanding scenes not 2 to 3 as you stated. Hence the reason DF stated PS5 gets “significantly” closer to its 60fps target.

ScootaKuH1342d ago

PS5 games look like PS2 games next to Series X don't they? I mean I can count every individual pixel and I confirm Series X is at least 3 gens ahead of PS5 easily.

Viljong1342d ago

"At some points we're seeing a lead of around 10fps in PS5's favour, and it rings true as a more optimal 'up to' 60fps experience."

BehindTheRows1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

I suggest actually reading the article…

“In comparing the two consoles in resolution mode, we're given an interesting contrast. There's no doubt that PS5 delivers smoother performance: the 4K checkerboard technique works well and generally allows for a tighter lock at 60fps. Series X has a clearer image - one closer to a true 4K in raw detail, but in motion, the detail break-up you experience with PS5's checkerboard rendering is disguised by the game's TAA and motion blur. It's a strong use of the technique that gets it close enough to pass as a native presentation. The savings PS5 also gets in frame-rate terms can be stark too. At some points we're seeing a lead of around 10fps in PS5's favour, and it rings true as a more optimal 'up to' 60fps experience”.

What 2-3fps are you referring to? You also exaggerated the image quality difference (again, per the article).

IRetrouk1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

They had to zoom in 800% to see that consistently inferior image and that 2-3 framedrop is actually over 10 at times and happens a lot more than every now and then....

No mention of the odd graphical glitches on the series x version?

I've never seen any gamer other than xbox gamers saying resolution over frames.... its not right lol

Babadook71342d ago

"So losing 2-3 frames every now and then vs. consistently inferior image quality throughout the entirety of the game"

Dropping frame time by HALF frequently in more demanding areas of the game vs a slight difference in sharpness that many people, under close examination, say the PS5 looks a tad sharper.

Frame rate is the key differentiator here.

Eonjay1343d ago

It's actually not true. The PS5 is pushing more pixels but it uses checkerbording to do so. The result is still higher res on the PS5 console. This could have been done on Xbox too to hit 60 but they are basically using Xbox One code here whereas PS5 is using updated pipeline.

SeTTriP1342d ago

No he is not nx gamer explained this already. https://youtu.be/o-kOiyN4ng...

The ps5 looks and plays better and digital foundry are xbot shrills.

gamer78041342d ago

Fake pixels don’t count, specially during fast motion or transparency effects….so annoying

IRetrouk1342d ago

They aint fake pixels lol they are reused ones, and only on the horizontal pixels at that🤦‍♂️
You literally just copied the only two issues df had with the ps5 version at any point lol and they still said the ps5 version is best to play.

IRetrouk1342d ago

Xbox vertical resolution is lower than stated by df too, nx updated his post

autobotdan1343d ago (Edited 1343d ago )

As for how Series X and PS5 compare in their respective resolution modes, the Microsoft machine is pushing many more pixels than its Sony counterpart, giving a marginal lead overall in image quality. Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 gets significantly closer to the target 60 frames per second, struggling only in areas with a lot of transparency effects - the flood sequence early on in the game is the ultimate workout.

On Xbox Series consoles, Shadow of the Tomb Raider patch 2.01 essentially makes the FPS Boost upgrade official, delivering identical performance but addressing the progression bug

CaptainHenry9161343d ago (Edited 1343d ago )

900p on the series S? There's GPU bottlenecking on the the series X as well. The PS5 is using more checkerboard rendering than the series X version. I still think it's irrelevant comparing a 3 year old game that's not a next gen title.

What about the load times??? I'm glad the loading times in games are a lot better on next gen consoles. PS5 version of Ghost of Tuishima loads in one second with a WD Black M2 SSD. Really is a game changer for me

rakentaja1343d ago (Edited 1343d ago )

If you take it logically now, on Series X it wouldn't take more than 3 seconds. It all depends on the optimization of the game.
Quick Resume test:
After a cold start, I can start playing Shadow of The Tomb Raider 6 seconds after clicking the game icon on the dashboard. Both systems have their own "goodies" to play with. Ghost of Tsushima took more than a minute...

Darkborn1343d ago

I just pressed ghost of Tsuchima on a cold boot and was in the menu screen in about 2 seconds and in the game one second later. Maybe 4 seconds tops.

CaptainHenry9161343d ago (Edited 1343d ago )

What M2 SSD drive are you using? I can confirm it takes 1 second in most areas in the game and when you fast travel and when I boot it it's a little longer.1 to 3 seconds tops for most *next gen titles* when playing the game on PS5 and depending on your m2 SSD drive. Spiderman Miles Morales has no loading while you're in the game and when you fast travel

BlaqMagiq11343d ago

That's an absolute lie. Booting up Ghost of Tsushima PS5 version from the dashboard to the game literally takes 5 seconds tops. If it's taking you a minute you have a serious problem with your game or your PS5.

to BlaqMagiq1:

Has it shortened significantly after the official PS5 release?
In the case of Quick Resume, I would have run around in the game 6 seconds later ...

Orchard1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

@jump_right_into_it

“ You know that PS5 games can load your save or built in checkpoints directly from the dashboard, right?”

Only if the developer chooses to implement it and only at fixed points in the game. Quick resume can go direct into any point of the game - except multiplayer. It also requires no work by the developer.

“PlayStation has had quick resume since the PS4.”

No it hasn’t. That’s suspend and resume for a single running app - totally different thing.

Destiny10801343d ago

the series x is constantly dropping frames even into the 40s, overall a unplayable mess, without vrr
the series s 900p with a locked 60 fps, overall horrible on a 4k tv but possibly playable on a 1080p tv for those accustomed to 900p content
PS5 mostly locked 60fps, easily the best experience of them all

autobotdan1343d ago

"Although the resolution mode targets 60fps - and does a pretty good job overall - neither PS5 or Series X can lock to it," -Digital Foundry

rakentaja1343d ago (Edited 1343d ago )

I believe you are able to spread the lie that the whole game runs at 45 fps because in one cutscene it dropped to 45 fps for a few seconds.

LOGICWINS1343d ago

Even if that were true, the Series X is still the overall the best console for gamers that prioritize FPS. Not only can the Series X unlock framerates without developer intervention, but it also has vastly more 120fps titles than the PS5.

Feel free to celebrate these small victories, but that doesn't change the bigger picture.

BehindTheRows1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

“Vastly” more 120fps titles? List them. And PS5 can also have unlocked framerates - the Series X isn’t worlds away from it in any capacity.

“The bigger picture” is that these consoles are as close in power as consoles have ever been and unless you’re running a monitor/TV with VRR capabilities, the Series X runs at a higher res (albeit, marginal, as the article states) that sacrifices performance (where the PS5 shines).

@Destiny1080

That said, a game running in the 40s isn’t an unplayable mess. It’s just that the one who targets the 60fps threshold more often will feel better to play.

TheDoomedGuy1342d ago

Anything the series x can do so could the playstation 5...a feature is a feature and anyone can implement it.

I've consistently seen Microsoft push higher resolutions over fps and therefore playstation always delivering better fps.

IRetrouk1342d ago

You mean all the bc titles that have to run the xbox one version and cut their resolution to play at 120? But I thought you prefer resolution over frames🤔
You realise that the ps5 can also boost framerates without intervention too right? Not all, and not to the extent of xbox, but its still there.

Small victories? The ps5 has constantly had the xboxs pants down this first year lol

The bigger picture? That would be that ms still hasn't shown one title on the series x that gets close to sonys output so far, it's actually a joke at this point. Not one of their upcoming two releases have raytracing or any real next gen features either... the ps5 on the other hand...

strifeblade1342d ago

Don't take retrouk seriously. This guy boasted Sony had the best racing game because of gt academy. What a joke. And he forgot it closed down before Sony even released their latest racing game LMFAO

IRetrouk1342d ago (Edited 1342d ago )

Anybody that wants to can go and see that converstation where you brought up exactly nothing to counter what I said. Also nice way to try and misrepresent what I actually said.
Did I not ask if the forza series ever made a real race driver out of a gamer before? was it not you that said it wasn't true and then I told you to look up gt academy?....
Did I not offer to race you on both series? Did I not ask for proof you played both?...
Did you provide any proof you play either game?...
Didn't I mention not just gt academy, but also, sales, player numbers and the fact ones still supported over the other?....Go home your drunk and obviously still mad because I shut you and your silly little arguments down....get over it you silly little clown😭😭

So much hassle people had for FF16 performance on PS5 to hit PC and still be barely playable. FF16 is hitting the crysis “can it run it” for PCs.

And now I’m genuinely wondering is it because the devs failed to properly design the game or is it because it is over ambitious.

Hofstaderman197d ago (Edited 197d ago )

Too many variances in the PC ecosystem. They can attempt to optimize to a point but ultimately, as it is in most cases, individuals will have to tweak settings to get their rig to run the game at its subjective best. Me personally, I enjoy a no fuss console experience but must admit I'm getting into the simplistic steam deck tweaks.

Michiel1989197d ago

that's just nonsense, square is just bad at ports and have been for years. Japanese ports were notorious for it a good while, but it has gotten better but still nothing to write home about. Take FF7R pt1 for example, at launch on pc there were frequent random fps drops for no reason and a guy, a single guy got a patch out within 2 days that fixed it, if that doesn't say enough about their incompetency with pc ports then idk.

DustMan197d ago

I don't know how people are getting such poor performance. It ran well for me +60fps at 1440p dlss balanced, all high settings. I'm on a i7-8700, 32gb ram, and 3080, so a pretty old setup. I get very few stutters, and it's buttery smooth if i cut the shadows down to medium settings. cut scenes have been modded to run at 60fps.

It's sitting at "mostly positive reviews' on steam. With most of the complaints coming from those with said poor performance. By absolutely no means is this a perfect / great port, but it's not god awful. Seems like it's a hardware issue on the customers end, and issues with the port itself.

Inverno197d ago

This is talking about proton tho. It's expected for games to run poorly because they aren't natively running on Linux. I will agree however that Square has a history of putting out horribly running games on PC.

Hofstaderman197d ago

The game was optimized specifically for the PS5 and even so it makes that console creak....wonder how the Pro will handle it....

883197d ago

Hoping very much that it gets some "Pro Enhanced" attention.

Underrated? If anything, the game is overrated in my opinion

TricksterArrow220d ago (Edited 220d ago )

Yeah. The "open hub" model with "quest givers" really did not work at all for me.

Gamehard220d ago

Agree. To me, it was the weakest of the reboot trilogy.

CrimsonWing69220d ago

I literally came in here to say this. It started off so good, too. Once you hit Peru or wherever, you smash into a brick wall with the pacing. Honestly, the first entry in the reboot was the best one of this trilogy. Also, I’ll never understand why they let you dual wield her classic pistols in the first reboot at the very end and then in the sequels they never gave you that again.

isarai220d ago

Even more insulting. They let you buy one of the two pistols in Shadow of the tomb raider but never the second one

SeTTriP219d ago

Or her command prompt acrobatics.

Lexreborn2220d ago

The first was cool, it had its flaws but it wasn’t a bad starter. The second was supposed to be something special and just did not live up to the promises. The 3rd I can’t even finish it’s just not fun and narratively still a huge issue for the character.

Laura is written so contradictory, trinity supposedly is so bad but her body count on innocence and villains alike is alarming.

MeatyUrologist220d ago

It had its high points. Visuals are still some of the best I have ever seen. The areas were also gorgeous and fun to explore and the puzzles were actually good. That being siad the combat felt terrible, the hub area of paititi was boring, and nearly every aspect of the game felt a step backward from Rise. I still love the series and really forward to the next entry but hoping they make it mode similar to rise or even the original reboot.

MasterChief3624220d ago

I adored Rise of the Tomb Raider, but for some reason I had a harder time getting into Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Ravenkiss220d ago

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a huge letdown compared to the series Reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider...

mastershredder220d ago

You mean the game where they took out all the cool weapons? The locations were okay, a bit unoriginal and too much like the first Uncharted. 1 and 2 rocked. This one tried.

Amazon Prime members can get over 40 Steam Deck-compatible games for free right now

42 Steam Deck-compatible games that you can get for free right now, but you'll need an active Amazon Prime subscription for most of them.

Inverno220d ago

I've noticed when I was still paying for Prime that those supposed free games they give through Epic are just free games epic gives without the need of Prime. Rugrats is in the list in the article and it's available to get without Prime so that's pretty shady on Amazon's part, or maybe it's Epic being scummy.

TheNamelessOne219d ago

Tales from the Borderlands (the original, good one), Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Borderlands the pre-sequel, Borderlands 2, Loop Hero, Trek to Yomi, Greedfall, Shadow of Mordor, Hard West 2, Figment 2. Some great gets there.

__y2jb219d ago

Amazon never give steam codes away so the steam deck link here is silly unless you are modding and installing epic launcher.

Kyizen219d ago

Yeah I get a ton of free games on epic, It works but having to launch the Epic browser and games though it is pain vs just using the Steam deck OS. Once the game is running no issue though,

FinalFantasyFanatic219d ago

They give away quite a few GOG versions of games though, I suppose you can just slap those onto your Steam Deck (I've done this), although it's not always ideal.

__y2jb218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

You can but it’s a pain to launch them and doesn’t it require installing windows?

FinalFantasyFanatic217d ago

You don't need windows, personally, I just download it on PC, then transfer it to the Steamdeck via network sharing or USB stick. Then you add it to the Steamdeck as a "non-steam game" like you would if you were using a PC. The only downside is if you play the game on both PC and Steamdeck, you'll have to manually transfer save files.

Supposedly you can use Hero launcher or something, but I can't seem to get the games to work after download it via GOG on Steamdeck. So manually transfer it is for me.
