Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.
The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...
I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.
That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.
3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.
Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.
Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.
It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.
She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish
Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good
Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.
I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.
It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.
2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.
First one was decent, played through it twice. Second one was okay, played through it once. Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.
3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.
The writing of those games was just plain bad, though i have a fun time playing them. The 1 year timed exclusivity on x1 also seemed to take all momentum away from the series.
The writing is very subpar indeed. Even in the first game, that is by leaps and bounds the best of the three. Lara and Sam trusting on a local stranger and making small talk after witnessing murder and being attacked is one of the worst writing I have ever seen lmao.
Witness to giant flash flood, killing hundreds, personally witnesses a child dying in front of her, literally seconds afterwards getting to a safe platform and deciding now is a great time to argue with my friend and act like i didnt just see a child die 🤷♂️
Yeah no. As an old school fan of the very first tomb raiders, these games were mediocre at best. I will differ from the crowd and say that I thought Rise was the best of the three, but with Shadow the game got worse in nearly every single regard except maybe puzzles.
Shadow had seriously some or the worst combat I have ever seen in a modern game. It felt weird that they were trying so hard to be mature and dark, but they made combat feel weak and censored like a wii game. They either need to go back to their roots and actually focus on fun gameplay again, or go full in on the dark gritty experience. No more trying to do walk that line.
Hmm, the combat in the first original games was very simplistic, more akin to a "Wii" game, whatever that really means.
The new trilogy 100% imo had way better combat than the original games. They have stealth, which was solid, good gun and arrow play, and a variety of gadgets and environment playground to approach each encounter. There were parts where I was able to kill all enemies without being spotted, then there were parts, I used the tree tops to kill to my advantage, and then they had the all-out gunplay and traps you could use. The variety was great and could be used in any encounter.
I wasn't comparing the combat in the new games to the originals, I was comparing it to other modern games. It just felt very lacking in comparison but glad you enjoyed it.
First one was surprisingly good, second one was nothing like they promised but still decent. 3rd I still to this day can’t seem to finish it. I’ve got it on PC, Xbox and PS. No matter where I play it I lose interest. Perhaps I’ve given up on the homicidal Lara that doesn’t seem to notice she’s caused more damage then the organization she’s supposedly trying to stop.
I loved all 3 games, Rise being my favorite. IMO, this was one of the best rebooting of a series.
A lot of people say that shadow was bad, but IMO it was excellent, Shadow nailed the gameplay elements and felt more polished that the first 2. I enjoyed Rise more for its level design and setting.
I can't wait for the next entry in the series.. .day 1 for sure.
'this was one of the best rebooting of a series' I completely agree. This trilogy took a series that I thought was okay and turned it into one of my favourite franchises. I think the trilogy is a masterpiece. Can't wait to see where we go next.
Stick her in some tombs, make it slightly metroidvania, get her to shoot some animals, alien weird things, solve puzzles (environmental, physics and time based) platform around and kill a few but not many humans. Make it incredibly atmospheric and lonely. A bit of travelling, bish bash bosh, ya done.
I seem to be the only one who enjoyed the 3rd game the most. I never really cared for the story in any of the games. And the supporting characters were unmemorable except for Jonah Maiava. But the gameplay loop and upgrade system always made the games fun. The reason why I loved the 3rd game the most were the tombs, That's what makes Tomb Raider...well Tomb Raider. My biggest criticism of the 3rd game (outside the of previously mentioned sub par story) was the developers didn't do enough with Jonah.
Indeed, Shadow was excellent. The upgrading skill, optional Tombs for skills, and overall polish of Shadow were great.
I know what you mean about Jonah to an extent, but did you play the games with all the DLC? he actually found love and was fleshed out as a person with feeling a bit more, showing him devoted to someone else besides Laura was a nice touch IMO.
I bought the Trilogy with all the DLC included, so I wasn't sure what was only in the original release for shadow lol.
Just like most of the comments here, I agree, the 1st one was great but the other 2 were monotonous and while improving a lot in the graphics department they felt flat. Another thing is the awful supporting character known as ''Jonah''...Ju st plain bad, even the devs had no idea what to do with him because in the 1st entry he looked Hawaiian then in the 2nd he looked black and in the 3rd one he looked Mexican/Peruvian. Make up your mind already.
I'm really looking forward to a Tomb Raider game again that isn't so focused on telling a heavily emotionally charged story or features terrible gameplay elements like x-ray vision that eliminates any kind of challenge.
Just a classic TR game that drops you into this totally desolate, foreboding environment and isn't afraid to leave you scratching your head quite a bit about how to proceed. No endless amount of mercenaries that are miraculously always one step ahead of you, but instead fight against creepy mythological creatures, statues that come to life and whatnot.
You can turn up/alter the difficulty in many different ways, there are setting for combat and exploration. You could have the survival vision turned completely off, you can have no highlight markers, you can increase enemies difficulty, ammo scarcity and even health Regen.
That seems like it would solve 1/2 your problems with the game...the survival vision and no hints, or markers seem like what you want..its all in there.
Oh yes, that would certainly make the game more challenging, but even then I feel like it wouldn't be able to match the older games.
In the first couple of Tomb Raiders games, for example, there were times when you had to jump sideways up a slope, slide down until the right moment and then jump forward to grab a ledge that for the first two hours you didn't even see was there and instead chose to scout through the area to see if you had missed a switch somewhere. Nowadays, every climbable object has a very saturated color splashed on it that screams "CLIMB THIS!".
Such a challenge requires using your brain and a lot of patience and cannot be created with turning off the x-ray vision option, making ammunition scarcer or giving enemies more health. You know what I mean?
That's not increasing difficulty. That's just making it annoying. The game was designed around those gameplay mechanics. It should work the other way. First make the game without those gameplay mechanics and then add the easy element

No. Please forget the crap completely.
