Deathloop File Size Reduced Thanks To PS5's Kraken Compression Tech

We know that Deathloop weighs in at 17.3GB, but it's now emerged this was reduced from 25.9GB thanks to PS5's kraken compression tech.

I find the headline a bit funny...

"Deathloop file size reduced thanks to PS5's kraken compression tech"

Wow! compression tech reduced the file size.... And what else does compression tech do?

sourOG1387d ago

It does seem odd to praise such a basic thing lol. Im happy to see it regardless. I’m not praising the compression software I’m praising the act of being storage conscious. We need to widely praise the act and promote that behavior imo. And trash the cod that stopped caring about your storage long ago.

Allow you to load 8/9GBs on the PS 5, as opposed to 4,8GB/s on the inferior Series X. Look it up little bot.

NeoGamer2321386d ago

@hectorius
So what does that have to do with the headline? A compression technology by its very definition will decrease the size of the data. It is kind of funny that the headline is trying to hook you by just stating that the game's size is reduced by the definition of the technology.

What is their next headline going to be, "Deathloop able to ship on PS5 thanks to the PS5 development kit" or "Deathloop able to sell game thanks to the PS Store"? LOL. Do I need to go on?

Ooohhh more questions... I'm honour bound to answer N4G mods..

Hows about "PS 5 can download and play Deathloop, [9GB/4.84GB=] 1.87x faster than wickel Series X"?

Or

"78% of Deathloop sale on PS platform, even though MS bought the company and did all the marketing.. XB only sold 22%... Future of franchise looks Bleak"???

https://www.playstationlife...

With Xbox manufacturer Microsoft now owning the game’s developer, Obsidian Entertainment, much of the pre-launch marketing was focused around the console which only ended up accounting for 22% of launch week sales.

Debuting at number four in the charts, just behind the much-maligned WWE 2K20—which features issues so bad that Sony is offering refunds—The Outer Worlds‘ overall performance could be considered somewhat of a disappointment. Keeping this in mind, the fact that Xbox One only claimed just over a fifth of those sales could point towards trouble for the potentiality of future installments.***

https://www.mcvuk.com/busin...
The biggest release by far was 2K’s Borderlands 3, which destroyed Gears 5 at retail, as the Microsoft title performed poorly compared to its 2016 predecessor.

It was surprising just how much Borderlands 3 outgunned Gears 5 at retail. Outselling it by more than four times, across all platforms admittedly, but still selling 77 per cent more units when looked at head-to-head on Xbox One alone.

Against its predecessor Gears 5 performed poorly too – with sales down 78 per cent on 2016’s Gears of War 4 it’s something of a flop in a box. That drop is well above the typical rate of decline we’d associate with digital shift over the last three years (15-20 per cent)***

***LOL. Do I need to go on?***

I'd quit there if I were you kid.

While I can appreciate that you wanna be a big PS fan and take every opportunity to try and knock XB. I am not interested in fanboy rants no matter what the console.

All three consoles do their thing and have people that buy them. I have all three.

I just found the title funny.... Nothing to do with PS vs XB or whatever. The title says essentially that a compression technology helped get the size of the game down. Unless you've been living under a rock for longer then I've been around... Which is a long time. Compression technology has always reduced the size of stuff. That is its point. To take and make it a fan topic, well that is just who you are little boy.

There is nothing in the article about the speed of the technology or XB vs PS... You are going and trying to create a fanboy argument when there is none. lol. Truly, you have to be working and getting paid from Sony. Why else would you take me finding it a "bit funny" and going on ranting about XB vs PS?

Just calm down. I like my PS5 too, but I like XB, Switch, PC, tablet, and phone for gaming as well.

You do you...

The article made no mention of the speed of the compression tech at all, you brought it into the conversation for some unknown reason... You brought in XSX comparison also for some unknown reason...

I was just laughing at the title... "Deathloop file size reduced thanks to PS5's kraken compression tech". Duh, what does compression tech do? Make the size of the game larger? That is funny, that's all I'm saying. If you can't find it funny maybe you should take a break from this site and buy another console because obviously you don't have enough games to play.

As for my choice in consoles (Having all three) there is nothing to say I have to choose one. I love games and I love many games that I can only get on certain consoles.... Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Uncharted, TLOU, Ghosts, Insomniac's Spider-man, Ratchet & Clank, Gears, Forza Motorsports, Forza Horizon, Halo, etc. I enjoy all of them for different reasons. That's why I buy all the consoles. I enjoy games and there is not one console that can play them all. There is nothing wrong at all with that. If you don't like that I am not a specific fanboy and actually see the value in all the systems that is your problem, not mine.

We have one in this thread who won't buy the game on PS 5, but would rather wait a year for it to come on Gamepass, inferior with no Haptic Feedback or Adaptive Trigger... and that kid is the kind of "gamers" MS is bringing to the table??? Not saying its not because of Kraken, it very likely could be, but there is literally nothing in the article to confirm its because of it.
It was 25gb on version 1.000 and not its 17 on 1.001 and thats it, thats the full extent of whatever was looked at….

MIDGETonSTILTS171387d ago

Rimeskeem1387d ago

34% decrease in file size. That's amazing.

Orchard1387d ago (Edited 1387d ago )

There’s literally nothing to suggest this was down to Kraken?

Why would version 01.000 not benefit from Kraken but 01.001 would? It’s more likely they just optimized the package by removing duplicate and unused assets ahead of launch. This is fairly standard.

SullysCigar1387d ago

Or, maybe it was the awesome Kraken technology.

***Module Name Purpose/capability Ref.
AMD TrueAudio This package of user-programmable audio DSPs offloads audio processing from the CPU. Possible effects include 3D audio effects, audio compression and decompression, reverberation, and voice stream processing. [70]
Upload/download Capable of uploading and downloading data to the hard disk
Video compression/decompression Capa ble of encoding/decoding video formats on-the-fly. These modules are AMD's UVD for hardware video decoding and AMD's VCE for hardware video encoding, used for recording SharePlay videos in the background.[example needed]
Zlib decoder Decoding of compressed data from the Blu-ray optical drive.***

ZLIB decompression module.. Which they were going to use on PS 5, but went with Kraken which was getting a Min of 10% better performance.. Obv this was the occasion when the Min didn't apply.

Kraken devs state a lot better..

https://www.neogaf.com/thre...

According to the official graph by RAD Game Tools, Kraken has 29% higher compression ratio over ZLIB (used in PS4 and other platforms), and does it 3-5x faster (doesn't really concern us as gamers, only good for devs). Both Kraken and ZLIB are lossless compressions, meaning data is kept as it is, like textures, audio, game files, etc. Also another advantage is being 297% (~4x times) faster in decompression, which is very critical for data streaming at least.***

and as the man says, don't worry your little head about it.

***The biggest surprise for Arkane, however, was the PlayStation 5's innovative DualSense controller. "When I first got it in my hands, I had a smile, and my hands were smiling, if that's possible," Bakaba recalls with a chuckle. "We really like the features of the controller. We are all about immersion, and we are making a first-person shooter/action game. It's VERY possible that the initial version of the game wasn't using the kraken+oodle texture compression combo. PS5 only supported kraken at launch, the oodle texture support came later, https://cbloomrants.blogspo...

Orchard1387d ago

mkis0071387d ago

Orchard

This isn't a first party dev... who knows how long it took them to incorporate it. And you didn't seem to mention the oodle bit too.

Orchard1387d ago (Edited 1387d ago )

@mkis007

They are working on a PS exclusive, that's as good as first party - you can guarantee Sony were giving them early access to SDK builds, not that they would've needed early access - these features have been present since day 1. Sony also typically pressures '2nd party' devs to adopt platform-specific technologies.

My point was, there's no indication that this filesize change is due to any compression being turned on... the developer themselves haven't said such a thing - it's purely speculation. Pre-release builds change size all the time for many other reasons (e.g. de-duping assets).

I didn't mention Oodle? I mentioned Oodle Kraken and Oodle Texture. What other Oodle product are you referring to?

justsomeoffdude1386d ago (Edited 1386d ago )

@Orchard sony did not license both techs in june last year. That is false, oodle texture only came out in june and sony licensed later, it's clearly stated by the creators of the tech on the link i pasted. Mark cerny's ps5 presentation only mentioned kraken which allowed up to 8-9GB/s uncompressed data output. Oodle expands on this and allows up to double the ratio, if sony had licensed oodle as you claim then why didn't Cerny mention it during his presentation? Again from the link I posted,
"Not all games at launch of PS5 will be using Oodle Texture as it's a very new technology, but we expect it to be in the majority of PS5 games in the future."
Also just because a studio is developing an exclusive game for a platform DOES NOT make it a 1st party studio.

mkis0071386d ago

orchard
oodle texture has not been supported since launch. as others have pointed out.

Orchard1386d ago (Edited 1386d ago )

@justsomeoffdude @mkis007

Again, incorrect. Your own linked article states otherwise:

"Since then, Sony has licensed our new technology Oodle Texture for all games on the PS4 and PS5."

Article was written: September 24, 2020

And a later comment by the author on Nov 7, 2020:

"PS5 is the only system with a hardware Kraken decoder, and the only platform with platform-wide license to Oodle Texture so that every game can use it."

@justsomeoffdude "Also just because a studio is developing an exclusive game for a platform DOES NOT make it a 1st party studio."

I did not say it makes them first party, I said as good as. Having worked on 2nd party games, it does get you earlier access to preview SDK's etc, and more info generally - Sony want your game to shine on their platform and have a financial stake in your game.

You might want to read articles fully before linking them...

justsomeoffdude1386d ago

@Orchid, Lol, clearly you're picking comments that fit your narrative. The article's author also posted the following in the comments, on 19th November 2020.

"I can't comment on specific games, but the whole combination of Oodle Texture + Kraken + a well optimized loading pipeline probably won't be in a shipping game on PS5 for a while yet."

So the author made this comment AFTER the ps5 launch, now why would he do that if the ps5 already supported the tech at launch as you so boldly claim?

Just because sony licensed it sometime between june and september doesn't imply it was supported at launch.

Stop making false claims.

Orchard1386d ago (Edited 1386d ago )

@justsomeoffdude I’m not cherry picking any comments - I’m simply referencing the content of the article you shared and apparently failed to read 🤦‍♂️

So you’re saying Death Loop is the first game using Kraken correctly? I highly doubt that, many games have shipped with Kraken…

So where’s your proof that this patch decreasing the size is down to any Oodle product? Has the dev or Sony said anything? Can you link the source?
