Cletus Clay is the latest creation from TunaSnax, the company that created the side-scrolling, clay-tastic space shooter Platypus. The game films and uses hand-crafted clay objects in a messed-up story about rednecks saving the world from aliens.
Imagine creating all of the art assets for a game, from the character models to animations to all of the textures. Now imagine doing it with clay models. That is the task that the folks at the independent studio Tuna have taken on for the upcoming downloadable game Cletus Clay. But this isn't just a game about clay models. It's an action side-scroller starring the southern bumpkin Cletus (and his brother Emmet if you want to tackle the game with a friend) in a battle with aliens across 12 stages. The makers describe it as a, "wild and crazy, no-holds-barred, rootin' tootin' varmint shootin' side-scrolling platform brawler for home console." That is quite the mouthful.
Looks really good! Is this an XBLA title or full price retail?
I'm not sure what to expect from a title that uses clay animation. Are the characters rendered in 3D with the intention of looking like traditional claymation, or will the game be taking a Donkey Kong64 approach? If it's an Xbox Live Arcade title, it should do well, if it's a full retail game minus the depth of a sweeping 3D camera; it better damn well do something that other games of its kind haven't done in a long time, and that is be a fun side scrolling platformer.
